Draw knives are made to be pulled to your body for leverage. The handles should be even or slightly downward to the blade. Try bending the handles. Good work
Your correct, or he should just turn it over so the handles are at a downward angle.

He made a push knife not a draw knife.
That is a draw knife, the design is the same, the detail is how you use it, pushing or pulling it.🙂

The bevel is on the wrong side for a draw knife.
