I think that you have a lot to offer the public that is into flipping furniture. I think it's awesome you began this channel! I am a handyman and flip furniture too. Ever since I was a young kid I have loved taking ugly things and making them beautiful! (I call it the Cinderella effect) lol. Anyway the hell with the bullies, low-lifes and onward and upward. You have my full support, I'm a fan! Thx!

Thank you so much for your honesty.
I've just started restoring furniture and have thought about selling some. Not only have you been a wealth a information but I've grown fond of your style of restoration.
I completely agree that furniture restoration/refinishing is subjective. If you like the piece, purchase it. If you don't, move along.
Keep up the great work. 😁

This video is really spot-on. I truly appreciate your honesty and transparency. My daughter and I started refinishing furniture about 4 months ago and found that almost every piece has presented a new challenge (or 2 or 3) for us to solve. It looks so much easier on UA-cam than it is in real life!!!!! Whining just a little here... but we are HOOKED!!!!! We are learning lots and loving (almost) every minute. Thank you for all the tips!!!

The furniture that you do is so amazing and you do put tons of time in it. You put heart and soul in it because it turns out so beautiful. People that have opinions are just that, opinions!!! They have absolutely no clue the work and money that goes into each piece.

PRO TIP, one way to justify your prices is to ASK your customer, " how long would it take you to do this job? " it makes them think about the time and effort.

Your voice is pleasant, your descriptions concise and your editing is on point. My only frustration is not seeing your tattoos enough! I want to see and admire your ink. I'm sorry anyone gives you flack for any of your choices, furniture, paint or tattoos...rude people need to shut up.

My own note with the "not worth it even if it's free" pieces; the value you get from just practicing techniques on these POS freebies is so valuable! Pick up that broken side table and practice repairing wood splits, patching veneer, refitting a missing drawer into a shelf or whatever. Learning is fun!

Angie, you have so much to offer to those that are willing to watch and listen, to even be bothered by the whiners.
I personally can't stand when people put paint on good wood. But of the dozen or so projects I've seen you do start to finish, I have zero complaints about your decisions. And even if I did have a complaint, I'd keep it to myself. What you do with your property is up to you. I'm just glad you are sharing your knowledge and talent.

Thank you again, for all your hard work and advice. I totally get the friends asking you to do a peice of furniture for them and when you tell them a price they look shocked and discussed that you would charge them that for a little childs desk. I had to go step by step and explain to her I would do it but I needed payment first. She was wanting to only pay 50.00 I said that doesn't even cover 2hours work little the product to paint the piece and fix the little desk. She didn't even clean the desk to start with but I totally get the friends wanting things done for nothing it pisses me right off and I'm just starting out too I'm not totally new at it but for making money at it I am. I've taken on learning how to re upholstered French provincial chairs it's not fun let me just say tying springs the stripping the piece was easy putting it back together well I'm learning like you say was it worth doing? But im learning something new and I too only have the basics in the tools I would love to have the Surfprep sander too but its not in the budget. Keep up the great job at least you can talk in front of the camera 📷 👏

Thanks Angie for sharing such valuable information for free. I found letters "B" and "C" were the most useful & practical business advice for furniture restorers who want to make a living at this. For hobbyists, topics "G" "J" and "K" taken together will keep them grounded in reality, i.e., just b/c you have a bucket of DB paint, a Zibra brush and a Ryobi Table Saw doesn't mean you can render a piece of furniture that anybody else would ever want to own - it takes a lot of practice, and as you have shown us, some fair amount of talent!
From a business perspective I'm sure you must have considered other options to monetize this transfer of business knowledge. Regardless, I'm going to buy you a cup of tea (you're my first ever recipient!)

You are saving some of these pieces from the landfill and extending its life for decades to come. I also enjoy how much knowledge you have about furniture, and how you save the pieces that other people just pass on.

I have an entire notebook I’ve taken from your videos and I’ve just come across this gem of a class! I’m not sure how I’ve missed this 2-part series. But wow! What value. I looked into an online course like this from someone I met in a furniture group on FB…and let me tell ya….they want $950 for this class and it’s not this comprehensive. I’m not kidding. They say, “there’s no value in free”. However, I have found this absolutely INVALUABLE to my business and I am beyond grateful. Keep allowing your heart to lead you. I have only done a few simple refinishing jobs in my lifetime and don't plan to do it as a job (you DO make it look easy, but it is exhausting) but I have learned so much from your videos which improves my work around home. Especially informative for me was why I would sometimes get swirl marks in my sanding--I hated them so much and sanded them out by hand or painted the piece instead! I DO sometimes press too hard, have usually used too low a grit no matter what the job (80), and moved my sander too fast. I've learned so much besides this from your interesting, as well as entertaining, videos. You also impress your audience with your work ethic & positivity. We get the feeling that you enjoy what you do, even as you treat your projects with respect and seriousness! Thank you for sharing your expertise.

So happy you chose Just Practice First for J! I have been inspired by you to try my hand, so I picked a pine side table that was left behind by a previous tenant at my business, they had painted it black (with wall paint). Since I don't really care about the piece, I figure if I mess it up, no great loss! I have several pieces that are stepping up in quality and complexity, so I have made a "learning path" for myself! Thank you for all the amazing info you share! You are so talented as an artist (and the furniture you restore is definitely art!).

I have been following atleast half a dozen artists in the furniture business for a couple of years now and I have to say you have become my favorite. I've learned a great deal by watching all these folks but seeing I'm in Canada....and in a suburb of Montreal, I found that following a fellow Canadian has been more beneficial to my business than following someone from the U.S. for several reasons. 1: Not all the products they work with are available to us. 2: I find our market is very different (or smaller) than that of the Americans that I follow but the big one for me is the "repairs" aspect of this business. While I'm not afraid of repairing furniture and actually enjoy it, I don't always know how to go about it. I really appreciate you showing us how you do it. I decided to make this business my full time job this March and I'm loving every minute of it. Keep the videos coming.....I really appreciate all you do.

This is such great information. You are so generous in giving it out. I appreciate it. I'm so intrigued with what you do. I've never seen you restore a wooden piece inappropriately. You honor the wood and you do an excellent job of seeing the best in the piece. You have a natural talent for seeing when to paint and when to refinish. Those 'opinions' come from lack of education. The before and after pictures is the best education. Keep doing it 'your way'.

Look I’m 70 and I don’t know how many years I have to research, try, fail, try again and move on. ❤️💕again thank you.

I'm all about saving pieces from the trash Dominique so the more people keeping their own pieces and redoing them etc the better! Better for the planet and better for our resources. I'm glad you're enjoying my content. Thanks so much for watching!

Great info! Thanks for the time and effort creating it.
Not sure which one I would say I learned the most on, but the Listing section is very important, and had a ton of excellent info. Quality of photo and quality of info have significant impact on the buyer exactly as you described (granted, the quality of info isn't going to have a big impact on the ones that choose not to read...)
As for doing things for friends or family, I've personally seen many deals/favors go south. From people expecting a deep discount equating to free labor, or not even covering the cost of materials - to people that lose interest or find that the end product didn't match their vision, so don't pay, and ghost you.
I had a short lived side hustle with custom stained glass. Not many people understand the cost of materials and labor. With all of the (not so) hidden costs, my hourly rate was well under $10.

Great video! Thanks for sharing your knowledge about the business and your own experience. I have been watching your videos for a few months and really enjoy them. Your pieces are beautiful. Your time, inspiration, materials and more worth no matter what people say. Most people don't know what being in someone else's shoes mean when you earn a living.

So much great information in this video. I'm about to retire and am thinking of this as a hobby. It doesn't replace years of experienced leaned the hard way, but it certainly lays out the potholes to avoid. I run a small youtube channel and I don't think folks have any idea how much work goes into creating every video. I really enjoy the low-key style of your videos. They are so easy to watch even when I'm stressed after a day at work. Thanks!

You do beautiful work! Don't let the haters wear you down. Right now I take free stuff, trash picks. I haven't paid for than $5.00 for a set of end tables at my favorite thrift store. I am new to this. Sort of. I have "played" with furniture all my life with no serious intent other than furnishing my own home. But I have a desire to go further. This is a refreshing video on the other side of "business" thank you for info.

EXCELLENT Advice - how does the saying go...fences make good neighbors. Same idea contractual boundaries are the only way to protect yourself against people's shi**y or crazy behavior!
PS - I am a social worker/counselor and Someone's hateful; mean; snarky remarks is NEVER about you- It is ALWAYS about their pain and self-hatred. You keep doing what you do!

On the subject of bed bugs. I’m sure my mum told me that bed bugs don’t stay in the bed. They usually spend the day buried under wallpaper. People used to put turpentine in metal lids and the bed legs were stood in the lids.
The main problems would be woodworm and maybe carpet beetle but that is what I would be scared of. I am learning how to do upholstery so carpet beetle would be a right pain . All that aside, just enjoy yourself and stay as you are. You have a lovely personality and don’t let the bastards get you down.
