Very nice box. You can dull down bright colors, but you can't brighten dull colors. I'm with you, I prefer more muted colors. But I often start out with bright clear colors and mix the colors I want.
    Tfs.

I am so happy with this box, this year they are working even harder to give us good boxes...

Very lovely painting! I didn’t know that watercolor and alcohol markers could play nicely with each other. Nice to know! Sending best wishes and lovely thoughts for Jock’s recovery.

You can mix to dull colours but you can’t make them more vibrant! Just mix and dull down. Phthalo green is an amazing mixing colour it’s typically rarely used directly. Unrealistic bright cartoony and anime art is also valid not just ‘realism’. I like variety personally. Just remember a muted pallet is trapped muted a vibrant one can do anything!

Hullo Gem, I like these smaller metal palettes and I put 14 half pans into them! I prefer to have good split primaries too. I often put select favorite colors like a colbalt teal, or a deep purple so I can mix more from them as well! I have recently started to include a neutral tint for muting my paints instead of mixing Ultramarine Blue and Raw Sienna for my greys or neutralizing colors, just getting lazy I guess! I am mostly retired and I do not plan on moving anywhere! but then again I am not in or on a large farm or outsized dwelling. I hope Jock is doing well and that you and you Beau are holding up well having a sick pet can wer ya down for sure! You have a lot more animals about than we do, so perhaps you immune? Well I hope you enjoying your evening and Please take care over there!

What a neat set of supplies! But that brush would be a huge challenge to use for a piece that large! The hues in the watercolor set were nice; there’s an attempt being made at a split primary palette and some convenience colors. But I feel that the two greens and the two blues are way too similar! I want a bigger separation when using a limited palette.

Great video Gem! I like the bright colours as you can mute them the way you like.

I probably wouldn't like the vibrant colours, either, but that's just my preference. Would love to see you do this painting with your own favourite watercolours. I'm currently repainting something I did with ScrawlrBox supplies, now using my professional watercolours and a bigger surface to paint on. Takes ages, but I feel like it's going to be worth it :)

I've been watching Kloodwig for several years. She did infact go away for a while but she is back. Love her artwork 😍. Nice enough box. ❤🎉😊

The pen colour made me squeal so that's a good start! I was skeptical of Spectrum Noir when I first saw them years ago but I'm happy to admit it was misplaced having used the metallic oil based markers and the alcohol markers. 😊
We're starting to see so many good alcohol markers from different brands with a reasonable price point now that I'm starting to wonder if Copic is starting to see some serious competition. 🤔

I love the picture! Do you have space in your attic or basement? I'm quiet and housebroken 😂 seriously though, I really like the picture and the idea behind it! really lovely ♥

I would have to reorganise those paints into a split primary set-up! They've got a good basic spread of colours though, definitely agree on the greens being artificial looking.

In the middle of the box turn half pans sidewards - put a magnet on the bottom to keep them in place and you have more paints. For me that brush is way too small.

The paints are a bit loud,I would have thought a more sedated colour set would have worked better .If you don’t do a lot of flowers or more abstract,or figure work these colours would not be used so often. You also need more clever mixing tricks to get the change in colours to.Most hove the more compact sets for travel or ,defined skin, flower, pastel sets..They are an addition to their normal sets.I have a pastel set myself ,as the colours are much more muted. But the fact they gave you a thin brush made it more difficult.I bet most will not use it and go for their own brush.Your painting had good bones though, loved the oops moment and the tree that filled it’s place lol, done that more than once for the same reason lol!.But I thing by future they meant way into the future ..Funny how we imagine we’re we will end up too.I had a beautiful big four bedroomed house with a huge garden and wonderful views. Now I am widowed and in a small one bedroom flat with my little Yorkie.. Not how I expected to be,but it’s quiet and easy to keep so I am content .Love n Light 🥰

Gutted!!! My box didn't have the replacement red pen in it! 😢 I think I am going to go against the tide here on my view of this box. I am disappointed that they have gone with 2 artspaze products. For a while I have been a bit meh about the fact that we usually get a royal Talens (or subsidiary brand) product and I want to try products from different companies, but where the main items in the box are essentially drop-shipped items, that for me is not really what I want at all in an art subscription box. There's no information on the watercolours. No names, no pigment numbers, not even a mention of whether they are artist or student quality. I suspect times are hard at Upcrate -the whole thing combined , the magazine text being run through Google translate, nobody checking the right products are going into the boxes (last month's oil/acrylic paint mix up), the fact that the winner of the upcrate battle this month hadn't even been announced until after the box came out (& 2 of the images were different in the bottlepost to the ones on Instagram), it makes me feel like there's one guy trying to do all the work behind the scenes. I love the concept of art subscription boxes, and I love the community on Instagram, but if there was another viable choice here in Germany that wouldn't mean high costs for import tax and shipping I would switch in a minute. It's a real shame for Upcrate, but in my opinion I think scrawlrbox is definitely better. But I also do see that everyone else loves this box, so maybe it's just me! 😂😂

If you have someone who posts things to you from the UK regularly or if you are due a visit, I'd be happy for you to have my replacement pen - I could post it to a UK address for you - just drop me an email! colourcavegem@gmail.com

Sounds like you got yourself a new watercolor paint tin!
The greens are very disappointing - they both look like “true green” 🤪

Tough question here. Which do you think is better value for money, scrawler box or upcrate?

    • @TheColourCave
      @TheColourCave  Рік тому

That IS a tough question. I personally pay for Scrawlrbox yearly, and being in the UK means it is a bit cheaper than Upcrate. Given that the types of supplies we get between both boxes tend to be similar and the boxes are a similar format, it would be Scrawlrbox for me.
I think we should have a poll on the channel, what do you think? Ask all the Cavers?

@@TheColourCave thanks for the reply. I have been with scrawler box about 2 years now and keen to try upcrate. I think a poll would be interesting. Also hope Jock is ok 😊

I’ll put a poll up tomorrow, it will be interesting to see… I would say though there is no harm in switching it up for a few months- you could do six months of each?
Jock is doing well, currently curled up in the floor beside me snoozing away 🥰
