I was just about to casll the company about the damn adjustable wall. I cannot believe it still has not changed since you uploaded this in 2010...Five years later you saved me so much trouble explaining the wall is held in place by the water pressure. Holy Cannoli!!! Thank you man!!!!!!
Dude all i have to say is i love your vids man there super helpful, and u should be proud of your dedication to the hobby. Anyways i have been looking at these sumps for months now and then i found your video and u help sell me on it thanks bro keep them coming
Hi Newyorksteelo, I am new to this hobby after years of fresh water..have recently setup a 90gal going thru the cycling process and just last week bought a proflex 4 sump. Your video gave me everything i needed to know on installing my skimmer (i have a turbofloater 1000 msl)...thank you so much...
I just got the model 3. I'm glad you talked about the wall going into the second chamber. I havent hooked it up yet but I was trying to figure out how the hell to keep the wall up. lol
@newyorksteelo yeah, i checked it out and it really is acrylic. It even does the same from two different vendors... So the side panels is one panel that goes all around? thats nuts man. That is way stronger than just welding with glue. Very nice...
@newyorksteelo yes but correct me if im wrong every thing that enters the skimmer bonds with the micro bubbles which take it to the collection cup where it is out of the system there for eating all of the life that enters put the return pump more life has a chanse of making it through the impaller during the rotation intervauls
@newyorksteelo Absolutely!!! you have to do a part three that shows the final install. It should definitely include everything from reactors to top off....
Hey newyork you always have good videos... i have the pro flow 1 and i modified mine. I have 6" DSB in both chamber 1 and 2 and have chato in chamber 2 and i have about 10lbs LR in both chambers. But this is how i modified the set up... i removed the filter socks and made block of disks out of plexi and in one i drilled and installed a 1" pipe with a 90deg elbow on bottom to direct the flow... but i utilized that section up top buy making that at horizontal Algae Turf Scrubber. I can send pics.
Well I have decided to rebuild my 55g Fish only tank to a FOWLR since corals cant be found here in hawaii except feather dusters, I know I have the Ocean right! I decided to get the Proflex model 2 because i thinks its the largest one i can fit in my stand because there is a board in the middle of the back which prevents me from going strait in. Also going with the AquaC EV120 and power that with a Mag 7, Also a Reef Octopus overflow box, maybe on next paycheck a MP10, not sure if i need 2.
He Steelo about the filtersocks, a great tip i got last wekend from picking up my new protein skimmer. If you want them spot clean wash them with chlorin/bleach in the washing machine 95 degree celcius *not know the Farhenheit* and clean them afterwards with soda. They get spot clean he sad and showed me the clean filter socks. good luck with the next update!
Great review. How would this work for a fresh water tank? what would you put into the chambers to get it to filter out all the things you don't want in your tank? Thanks
u r awesome. " Even if threaded, you can still slip it and then use a clamp to hold it in place." this is what i want to know.. thank you so much... i got my durso kit yesterday ...thank you
Ok, I have a few questions for you. Whats the purpose of the light one the refudgium? Did the protein skimmer come with the sump? And if not what kind is the one in the video? Also, what is the gallon ratting on the sump. for ex. 50-100 gal? What is the pumps that you have by the skimmer. And last off. Why do you have a chiller.....I thought you were supposed to have a heater. So you have a heater and a chiller?
Great video again. I just got this sump. I really got to thank you since I totally know nothing about plumbing and after watching this video, I went and got plumbers tape before setting it up. I just want to ask for the grey tubing, do I just force it into the white elbow without any tape or pvc cement?
I noticed how you were talkin g about cleaning your filter bags. If you wash them in your washing machine with a little bleach in your washers bleach cup. And make sure you set your washer to a second rinse if you have one. Just a little tip I learned from a fellow reefer.
Love the sump Steel!!! Today i got 15lbs. of MiracleMud, will install it on weekends! Do you think, having you skimmer in the return section might reduce it's efficiency, because when your foam pad gets clogged, the water level in your return chamber will change?
Hi Steelo, Great video as always. I'm considering the Aqueon ProFlex Sump Filtration System Model 4. I wanted to hear what you had to say about how often do you find it necessary to replace or clean the filter socks? Thank again for the great videos. Robert...
thank you for ur quick reply. i do have a bigger tank and i m doing dual overflow or both corner. i made my glass tank and drill the hole. the hose come with proflex sump model4 is flexible hose. If i drill a hole on the bottom of my tank, i dont know what kind of bulkhead i should use.. (because the hose is slip on, but the bulkhead usually sells in the market is threaded or slip--but "slip inside not outside" anyway, really appreciate ur help. i bought proflex sump becuz of u. lol
Did you ever do a part 3 of this video? I am curious as to what you decided to do with the filter socks and your refugium stage. Also did you keep your skimmer in the last stage but pulling water from the first? Do you still use this sump or move to another?
how you doing my friend, wow i like the system is this what you running now in your tank or you switched back to your other sump i wouldnt mind building something like that with acrylic do you have anymore videos about this Aqueon ProFlex Sump Refugium Model 4 system
Yet another great vid. This one though my Schnauzer Shilo sat up high on the bed and I wondered what she was doing. She was actually watching this vid lol.
With the protein skimmer in the last chamber of the sump after the refugium wouldn't it skim out the beneficial critter, like copepods, that may grow in the refugium?
It looks like there are two pumps in the last stage of the Aqueon sump. If one is going to the chiller and then to the main tank, what is the second pump doing ? Thanks, Nick
Hey man, Love your videos!! I have a quick question. What size are your drain lines from the 90 gal compared to the size of those clear acrylic tubes? I'm thinking of adding this style drain (DIY) to my sump to combat micro bubbles.
Quick Question, i have seen many people put bio balls in the actual filter bags, it seems to work really well, will you also add bio balls into your filter bags?
Great thanks for the info..i did the same too as recommended by aquean. Also i want to ask you instead of the dsb or miracle mud i used crushed live rocks in the first chamber as well as in the refugium area just because i had some left.. is this ok?
You don't have to have your chiller turned on to pump water back to your tank? That petty sweet how that's works I'm about to start looking into it. Any suggestions.
It wasn't clear to me if one pump was taking water from the sump to the chiller, and then from the chiller back to the main tank; than what was the other pump in the sump doing ? I'm sorry if I'm not making it clear :( I hope this made it clear, I'm new to this hobby. Thanks, Nick..... Your stuff is great !!!
the flex hose one side is connect to the sump.. that's no problem.. The other side connect to the (either bottom of tank or back of the tank. ), How u connect it? If you drill a hole on the bottom of the tank, what kind of bulkhead fitting you use? (please detail the bulkhead which u use to connect between the flex hose to the overflow/bottom of the tank.) Thank you
steelo are you planning to put copepods in the refugium?? i ask this because im going to start a refuge with copepod and i wanted to know if the skimmer after the refuge will kill copepods...i see in this model there is also a sponge as you stated to trapp microbubbles..wont this also block copepods from reaching the dp?? thats why i am more towards a diy...drain area with skimmer refuge and the return area...i like that you like to use miracle mud..planning to use it also!!
I have the proflex 2 sump; but my reef octopus skimmer can't fit in the same compartment as my eheim 1260 return pump. Any suggestions on where to put return pump? I've thought about refugium area, but wonder if that will limit what I can put in there with it. Appreciate your videos. For a beginner like me, they are gold!
@newyorksteelo Love the sump man, very jealous... especially since i paid the same for materials with the one i made lol. Hey man about the flimsy thing, my acrylic is actually bulging and it is 1/4 inch thick. At first, it was undoubtedly very strong feeling and looking but the salt water did something to it it seems. Needless to say, i dont sleep well at night but the welds are holding like a champ. Do you have any experience with bulging acrylic? scary stuff, cant imagine if it were thinner.
If for whatever reason you did not or forget to replace them every 3 days, is the sump designed to redirect the water that can't pass through the clogged filter socks, or will you have an overflow issue?
Ok, to me, that would be considered a design flaw. Optimal design for a "skimmer champer" regardless if this is designed to be wet/dry, berlin, or refugeum, the compartment for a skimmer should be designed to maintain a constant water level without forcing you to have an ATO type device, this is a main reason I have been considering turning my 30 gallon into a DIY sump/fuge.
So correct me if i am wrong...we can keep the protein skimmer in the 2nd chamber with some live rocks since its a bigger space or is it recommended to go with Aquean suggestion of putting it togather with the return pump in the 3rd chamber.. i saw some of the guys mentioning above its not good to have protein skimmer and return pump in the same area ?
@steelo Do you recommend the aqueon proflex sump/refugium as a good cheeper option to go with. Or do u recommend sumthing better that falls in the same price bracket as this one?? Thanx
There's gotta be some setting on your camera for an HD setting, be it 720p or w/e but the 420 looks really good as it is. BTW i forget, you're a partner now right?
hi guru its ravi how are you i like your sump refugium really nice. i see some white spots on my clown fish and what you think i should do. i stressed out since i found out abut it. i am setting up 10 gal hospital tank. or you have any other ideal that might work. please let me know thank you
@newyorksteelo lol thanks for the help i think i might order this for my 125 i am setting up its going to fresh water until i get the money fo metal halides:) but i think i am going to filter the system with some plants is it still called a refugium if its in fresh water or is a algae filter? :)
Good Video! But why did u chage to trigger sum? What's wrong with proflex? Can u give me full answer?) Thanks for all of ur video very helpful for me!!
Hello, I just bought the model 4. I am really struggling with hooking up the provided tubing to the bulkhead. I have tried every combo I can think of from home depot. 1 1/4 is to large and 1 inch is to small. Any help is greatly appreciated!!! thanks, JIM
I ended up buying the model 3 but I think I may have a problem. I am doing a water test right now, and the 3rd chamber where the skimmer would be stays at the same water level as where the refugium would be. Whats happening is that at the bottom of the refugium, the plate the blocks the sponge doesnt really completely block water and it slowly flows through that and through the sponge. Is this normal? I dont have water flowing through the system right now, just doing a water test.
Hey NYS i got the model 3 proflex and i found it very hard to get it under my tank through the front doors since theres a support beam in the middle of my two front doors. i found out that i had to slide it in threw the top of my stand (thank god i have an empty tank). is there a better way to install this into the pine stand for my 90 gal. im just worried that if something happens where i need to remove it i dont want to empty the 90 gal tank to pull out the sump. thank you in advance.
the inlet hose for proflex , wat kind of bulkhead u connect to it(where u buy it, it wont work for either threaded or slip bulkhead wat size u buy urgent, thank u
I have responded to you in a message as the comments are not long enough... I'm not saying it's truly a "design flaw" just bad planning in my experiences as far as evaporation and water levels in a designated skimmer chamber, the way I am referring to would for instance put the skimmer in the first or second chamber of the sump, allowing a constant water level without an ATO and not having to worry about evaporation. More explanation in my message to ya.
Hey man... been watching your stuff for a while now... just wanted to know what kind of tubing did you use from the drain up to the sump and did you keep that or changed to pvc piping?
I still use the kinky tubing. You can find it here. www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=18447&cmpid=03csegpl&ref=6111&subref=AA&CAWELAID=525421307&CAGPSPN=pla&catargetid=530005150000091199&cadevice=c
***** Thanks Man! Got my sump/fuge up for 5 weeks now. I have Chaeto and Caulerpa running a 6500w bulb with snap housing. Also have deep sand bed and I added the Fiji booster mud. Just wanted to ask you how long did your refugium took to mature with copepods and amphipods showing, I dont see any on mine... Do i have to do something for those critters to start showing up? Also, my nitrate is down to 20ppm now compared to 80ppm when I was running those 2 eheim canister filters. Please let me know....
Arnold Adolfo It will depend on the live rock you used and whether or not its full of life. Uncured live rock that comes from the ocean and is not aquacultured is best. If you used this type of rock, you should see life in the refugium very fast.
Hey really like your videos and im new to this and i got a 75 gallon saltwater with aqueon hang on the back overflow and aqueon sump model 2 with brs reactors for carbon and bio pellets ok here my question i just ordered a jebao 9000 dc pump with 1 inch return line but i would like to order a reeflike overflow double drain but my sump is single now you think i could run double just run each line to each filter sock or not
The foam was still there at the time of this video. I no longer use this sump though as I now run the Trigger System SUmp Refugium. You can see a video of my new sump here. How To Setup A Sump Refugium
Thanks iam a beginner to the salt life but I studied for the past 3 years got more then want I need to start my 120 gallon long tank and your videos help a whole lot thanks again
I am ready to do a fresh water run on my tank and proflex sump is it ok to use tap water from the sink to do this or do I have to use fresh ro/di water from my ro/di unit ?
Russell Martin One strip can do the trick. If after running just one you feel you could get more out of running another one then go for an upgrade and add 2 strips.
***** if I use this sump as a berlin, will the falling action of the water into the filter socks be enough to stir up the water at the bottom of the first compartment? i don't want it to be a detritus trap. thank you.
jgtheman84 Not likely, mostly because in your case, the water coming down is crashing into the filter socks you are using, slowing down some of the chaotic flow in the first stage. I would consider adding a small pump in the first stage as I illustrate in my video titled "How To Setup A Sump Refugium". Here is a link to that video. How To Setup A Sump Refugium
That sump is sweeeeeet! I love that you can change the configuration back and forth as needed or to try what works best with your system.. As far as the flimsy sides, I am pretty confident it is more than strong enough.Aqueon does plenty of R&D before they put a product out for sale. (and the Steelo Edition sump/refugium is no exception) HAHAHAHAH peace :o)
Yea but what are the sizes I went all over looking for something that would screw into the 1.5 inch gate then let me add a tee. What size is the tee you are using? And the coupling
mark cooper Not sure I recall the exact size. I no longer use this configuration. Instead, I run the output of the AquaC Skimmer without the T and in a different sump altogether (Trigger Systems Ruby 36). My advice to you is to take the output of the skimmer, unscrew it, and take it with you to home depot and start assembling pieces that can attach the T.

Diggin the sump, cant wait to see it in the stand in action. I got a video or two of my sump/fuge up. Im not done with the settup but its a start.
Thanks, I like your reviews, just got my proflex 4, Aqueon ows you some royalties buddy! Keep up the reviews and keep reefin
Glad to hear it. Thanks for the feedback.
I remember seeing in one of your videos was that filter socks are bad what do you use for your mechanical filtration.
Great review. How would this work for a fresh water tank? what would you put into the chambers to get it to filter out all the things you don't want in your tank?
Thanks
thanks for the comment on the use of Teflon tape~!!I couldnt stop the dripping,,,that solved the leak
@newyorksteelo oh yeah, what about the top off? Not sure if you mentioned it anywhere here...
u r awesome. " Even if threaded, you can still slip it and then use a clamp to hold it in place." this is what i want to know.. thank you so much... i got my durso kit yesterday ...thank you

Hi Steelo, Great video as always. I'm considering the Aqueon ProFlex Sump Filtration System Model 4. I wanted to hear what you had to say about how often do you find it necessary to replace or clean the filter socks?
Thank again for the great videos.

great video like always!! this sump is awesome bro. i may get it soon,I'm going to get a 90g system for christmas
@newyorksteelo actually yeah I knew that, dont know why I wrote glass. Thanks for the thickness info. Again, great vids man keep them coming
@newyorksteelo And that is one of the things I like most about the reviews you do.

Hey steelo. For the filter socks try hydrogen peroxide instead. Works much better and no chlorine. Cheers.

Thanks so how did you end up using your sump...did u put the skimmer in the 2nd or the 3rd or the 1st chamber.

NYS, what refugium light do you use or do you recommend? I got a Model 3 proflex sump, currently lighted with a 15w florescent bulb but it looks dim.
@steelo Do you recommend the aqueon proflex sump/refugium as a good cheeper option to go with. Or do u recommend sumthing better that falls in the same price bracket as this one?? Thanx
how did you get a 20 min video on youtube, thought the limit was 15 mins or something like that

does this means you're now convinced to recommend the Miracle Mud now that you plan to include it into your AWESOME new refugium?

Why did you switch to the trigger systems? Is it worth the extra costs over the proflex?
Good Video!
But why did u chage to trigger sum? What's wrong with proflex? Can u give me full answer?)
Thanks for all of ur video very helpful for me!!
Hello,
I just bought the model 4. I am really struggling with hooking up the provided tubing to the bulkhead. I have tried every combo I can think of from home depot. 1 1/4 is to large and 1 inch is to small. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!
thanks,
JIM
I ended up buying the model 3 but I think I may have a problem. I am doing a water test right now, and the 3rd chamber where the skimmer would be stays at the same water level as where the refugium would be. Whats happening is that at the bottom of the refugium, the plate the blocks the sponge doesnt really completely block water and it slowly flows through that and through the sponge. Is this normal? I dont have water flowing through the system right now, just doing a water test.
what is the brand of the piping you use in this vid? where did you get it?
Hey NYS i got the model 3 proflex and i found it very hard to get it under my tank through the front doors since theres a support beam in the middle of my two front doors. i found out that i had to slide it in threw the top of my stand (thank god i have an empty tank). is there a better way to install this into the pine stand for my 90 gal. im just worried that if something happens where i need to remove it i dont want to empty the 90 gal tank to pull out the sump. thank you in advance.
are those 4 things in the refugium area lights?
NYS---Great Vids !---Has anyone drilled a hole in the Aqueon last chamber for a bulkhead so you can install a external pump ?
Any problems ?
Not that I know of but I am sure it can be done.
can you tell me why would that be? I am sorry i am trying to collect as much info as possible from the pros..thanks.
what kind of protein skimmer are you running in that video?? thanks !!!
the inlet hose for proflex , wat kind of bulkhead u connect to it(where u buy it, it wont work for either threaded or slip bulkhead wat size u buy urgent, thank u
What kind of skimmer are you using and where did you purchase it??
So what does the other pump in chamber 3 do that is not the return pump to your chiller then DT?
Great videos by the way, keep them up
I believe you are referring to the pump for the skimmer. Thanks for the feedback.
wont the skimmer eat up all ur copepods if u leave the skimmer pump there?
You said towards the end of your review it was pretty flimsy, did it end up holding up for you?
I have responded to you in a message as the comments are not long enough... I'm not saying it's truly a "design flaw" just bad planning in my experiences as far as evaporation and water levels in a designated skimmer chamber, the way I am referring to would for instance put the skimmer in the first or second chamber of the sump, allowing a constant water level without an ATO and not having to worry about evaporation. More explanation in my message to ya.
what type of protein skimmer is that model please. thanks
hey how long till the stand comes in
Hey man... been watching your stuff for a while now... just wanted to know what kind of tubing did you use from the drain up to the sump and did you keep that or changed to pvc piping?
Thanks Steelo... can you show us a new video of your current refugium, please... are you still using your Aqueon? Thanks
Arnold Adolfo You can see that video update here. How To Setup A Sump Refugium
what refugium lighting you using??
Would placing the rubber O ring underneath the plastic frame be better?
That could work too. Thanks for the suggestion.
do u still use this sump or do u have the ruby sump refug
Hey really like your videos and im new to this and i got a 75 gallon saltwater with aqueon hang on the back overflow and aqueon sump model 2 with brs reactors for carbon and bio pellets ok here my question i just ordered a jebao 9000 dc pump with 1 inch return line but i would like to order a reeflike overflow double drain but my sump is single now you think i could run double just run each line to each filter sock or not
You can take the double drains and unite them halfway down into a single drain into the sump.
Ok thanks ill do it and send u a photo
Did you take out the foam cube in the third chamber?
The foam was still there at the time of this video. I no longer use this sump though as I now run the Trigger System SUmp Refugium. You can see a video of my new sump here. How To Setup A Sump Refugium
Where did you buy this sump?
i just got the same ProFlex sump is the sump light you got (Lights Of America) good enough light for the refugium for live rock and sand ?
Should be more than enough to light for fuge :)
Thanks iam a beginner to the salt life but I studied for the past 3 years got more then want I need to start my 120 gallon long tank and your videos help a whole lot thanks again
Will Simmons Glad to hear it. Thanks for the feedback.
wel what about those ag limit things
So what did u put in the first area..I know u got a new sump..lol
@newyorksteelo just watched it...thanks!!
I am ready to do a fresh water run on my tank and proflex sump is it ok to use tap water from the sink to do this or do I have to use fresh ro/di water from my ro/di unit ?
Yes. You can use tap water initially for the leak test and then start off with RO water before mixing it with salt.
What kind of lighting did you use for your refuguim? Where can I get the right size? I want to go LED.
I am currently running 12 inch 8K LED Strips from Truelumen. I use 3 of them and they work like a charm.
***** Would I need only one for the Model 2?
Russell Martin One strip can do the trick. If after running just one you feel you could get more out of running another one then go for an upgrade and add 2 strips.
@newyorksteelo thanks mann make it now!! lol cant wait
would you recommend this sump or have you had a better one since or before?
I would highly recommend it, but the Trigger Sump is slightly better.
How To Setup A Sump Refugium
jgtheman84 I put one of my hydor powerhead in the first and last stage of my sump/refugium
That sump is sweeeeeet!
I love that you can change the configuration back and forth as needed or to try what works best with your system.. As far as the flimsy sides, I am pretty confident it is more than strong enough.Aqueon does plenty of R&D before they put a product out for sale.
(and the Steelo Edition sump/refugium is no exception) HAHAHAHAH
peace :o)
I have the same sump and skimmer but i cant find a tee fitting to fit the skimmer. how do you have the tee connection set up?
The T is connected to a PVC coupling that is screwed on to the skimmer outtake.
Yea but what are the sizes I went all over looking for something that would screw into the 1.5 inch gate then let me add a tee. What size is the tee you are using? And the coupling
And thanks for the response
mark cooper Not sure I recall the exact size.
@newyorksteelo you should it would be a good laugh
@newyorksteelo ok cool thanks
@newyorksteelo Yeah I get what you mean, grea sump!!!
lol, you could've slept because there was nothing in the tank-i understand tho-i probably couldn't have resisted gettin it up and running
omg ur next video is the big100
you know howyou go to whatch comedy vid and it says if your acccount age is over 18 you can agre to whatch it
you wont get micro bubbles with freshwater so the test is still to be determined...
