- The CERV III made its debut at the 1990 Detroit International Auto Show. It was fully operational, more of an engineering project than a design project. It used a prototype of the production ZR1's 5.7 liter aluminum block engine. It was twin turbocharged to achieve 650 hp. The engine was mounted sideways in the chassis with a six speed automatic transaxle. The car had 4-wheel drive, with two centrally located bevel gear sets distributing power to the drive shafts. Front to rear torque split was determined by a computer- controlled hydrostatic device that worked in conjunction with the center differential.
The CERV III weighed 3400 lbs. To cut the weight, the backbone was made of carbon fiber. The backbone itself weighed only 38 lbs. Some titanium was used, as well as aluminum castings. The drive shaft to the front wheels was carbon fiber, as were the eight brake rotors, two per wheel. The body was a mix of carbon fiber, Kevlar, Nomex and aluminum honeycomb. The wheels were cast magnesium. The CERV III had active suspension. The purpose of active suspension is to keep the car body flat and level during braking and cornering at the limit of adhesion. Theoretically, once the computer sensed a bump, the car could even lift a wheel and tire over a bump in a road. The car also had computer controlled rear wheel steering, which was used to stabilize a cornering maneuver, compensate for a cross wind or tighten the turning circle at low driving speeds. The braking system used carbon fiber brake pads and rotors. The calipers were inside each rotor. The CERV III had Lamborghini type "scissors" doors. The doorsills held the fuel cell gas tanks with a combined capacity of 23.3 gallons.
The CERV III also had a lot of gadgets inside, including a navigation system and a way of conveying information on all the sub-systems. The wheels were 9.5 x 17-inch front and 11.2 x 17-inch rears. The top speed was estimated at 225 mph.
Once Chevy decided to do a front-engine Corvette, this show car disappeared from the circuit.

It may have died out but the front end was reborn in the C4 Vette. Looking from the front, it clearly resembles the nose of a C4
I think this car took that from the c4, not the other way around. The C4 debuted in 1984. this concept was presented in 1990. Maybe you meant a c5? To me the front end looks like a mix of the two

Actually XJ220 borrowed more from Corvette Indy than Cerv III - take a look sometime, you'll be quite impressed with amount of styling cues that are on both cars.

It probably had sound when it was uploaded, but UA-cam's copyright nazis saw it wasn't original content and took the audio away. It happened to me on one of my videos.
This is a 20 year old video of a corvette concept! Rear mounted engine, the way it was supposed to be, and here we are 2016 and still no rear engine vette.
From a styling and performance prespective this is the way to go but there are so many Corvette fans who wouldn't accept anything but a Corvette with the engine in the front. I think that's the stumbling block for Chevrolet. Look at what happened with Pontiac when they imported the small performance car from Holden in Australia and put a GTO badge on it. The loyalists didn't like it and for some reason, probably having to do with price, younger people didn't flock to it. I think Chevy is wrestling with a similar dilemma. Or it could be the extra cost of retooling too.
King Rose Archives I think it's cost, cause I can't see a corvette fan decking their lived badge going all out as a super car.
Look at ford and their GTO, the corvette can run with it, but it just falls short in that super car feel.
They already have the Camaro for front engine coupe. I wonder what a corvette owner feels like when a GTO runs by them?

it definitely doesn't. it has a more aerodynamic design which is shown through the fenders having more curve than an m4s. Also, the Barbie corvette was more of a late gen C5 than this.

Hard to rip off something when both cars were being developed at the same time. And the only thing that remotely looks like nsx is the mid engine and rear. You can definitely tell this lay the foundation for the c5.
