SOME NOTES @geertkroezinga600 says it seems the Vega56 and 64 and VII may not get video acceleration in Sonoma. OCLP removes the newer AVX2 drivers and replaces them with Monterey drivers. So the RX580 and Polaris GPUs are your best bet. If someone has a Vega card running well in Sonoma please post here. Also it may not be necessary to turn off SIP as it seems OCLP does it for you, so no need to boot into recovery mode. With Martin Lo's OC pacjage for the 5,1 SIP must be turned off first. And when installing OCLP it should tell you that you need to install the latest KDK just follow the directions and install it, it is the graphics drivers for your GPU. github.com/dortania/KdkSupportPkg/releases/tag/24B5009l
As far as I know, and from own experience, the Vega56/64 won’t have hardware acceleration in anything beyond Monterey due to the driver needing AVX/AVX2 instruction support on the CPU which a 5,1 will never have.
@@geertkroezinga6003 hmm I know that’s true about the 6000 series but the Vegas are listed as working although I don’t have one to test post patches should get video acceleration working. Will have to do some more digging. UPDATE: OCLP removes the Sonoma drivers and installs the older Monterey drivers, this can obviously lead to GPU issues.
@@MacSoundSolutions Well I tested it, but not recently, with handbrake. It doesn't offer VideoToolBox acceleration with Vega on anything beyond Monterey. So that means that parts of the driver are not working. Unfortunately its the parts of the functionality why most people would buy a Vega.
Great video as usual Lance, in one of your previous video you,ve also mentioned is not a good idea to put OCLP on your main boot up drive, due to the fact it takes about 30 seconds longer to boot up, than if you intall it on a separate drive or USB drive!!!! Is this the reason why this isnt recommended? Or is there any other downsides? Thank you Also I am going to install final cut pro 10.7 for video produccion only on my 5,1, but you have mentioned its no a good idea and rather stick with Martin lo OC with Monterey Due to compatibily issues!! Could you please be more specific, whats the dowside or what issues may arise in doing so? THANK YOU very much
I said its not a good idea to put opencore on a NVMe with your system and you don't have to have it on the same drive as the system. It's best to have OC on sata bay 1 drive if possible, or you can leave it on a USB stick. It can be on the main system drive but only if it's in the Sata bays, you can install the OS on the PCIe NVMe just not opencore. it will work but you may wait 30 seconds before the boot chime. You can use the latest FCP but some functionality will not work, some of the new AI features or M chip only features but other than that it should run ok. I have the latest version on my 6,1 and it works fine and logic pro.
Hi Lance, thanks for the great video. I got a warning when downloading the installer of Sonoma on my Mac Pro 4,1 updated to 5,1. OpenCore provides a link to the GitHub issue, which is a USB 1.1 one. Did you get any issue with that?
@@mytj228 you just need a wired Keyboard and if it’s not a usb 2.0 you need to connect it to a usb 2.0 hub. The post patches will fix the keyboard not working once the install is complete. So USB 1.1 keyboard will stop Working during the install process that’s why you need a USB 2.0 hub with the usb 1.1 Keyboard if that’s what you have or a USB 2.0 keyboard that’s what the warning error is about.
Lance- sorry one more question I thought of watching it over and over again. Hopefully it helps others who may have the same question. How does the boot process work if I install OCLP on a different Disk, if I bless that Disk, and it happens to have a different OS on it as well, won't the firmware try to then load that older OS and not the Sonoma? I am in the position of not being able to put the OCLP on my Sonoma drive as it is a NVMe on a PCI card. But also cannot put it on the internal SSD because that is the Mojave SSD. I just wanted to understand which drive I would BLESS, and then how it would load the correct OS, if I put OCLP in these different places. And just to confirm, holding control key and seeing the silver Apple boot picker is the visual process for BLESS correct? Thanks again, this is great stuff. Much Appreciated!
YOU can install OCLP on any drive, I like to install it in SATA bay 1 if its a Mac Pro 5,1. It can be a Mojave drive, OCLP does not support booting into mojave so it can live on that drive and to boot into mojave you just hold down the option key at boot and that bypasses OCLP from loading so you can then boot into mojave. A bit tricky if you don't ahve a boot screen.
Lance- thanks for this video! I was finally able to carve out some time today to watch. I was wondering if you could explain the Dortania screen a bit more? It reads as if you can install OCLP without flashing EnableGOP or the GPU- but based on your video and my own trials it seems like that is not the case. What is that Dortania screen trying to tell us? It literally states "For Mac Pro, Xserve and, iMac users with non-flashed GPUs, you can still easily boot OpenCore and view the entire boot process." It does not seem to be true that you can view the entire boot process without either flashing EnableGOP or flashing the GPU first. What am I missing? Then also I was wondering if you could explain when to use the disable SIP from the OCLP GUI screen there? When can you do that, and when would you need to do that? Would that be done back when creating the USB installer, or after the OCLP is installed to the internal drive? Was just trying to understand the cadence for when to use that feature. Thanks again for making these videos, really good stuff. Cheers.

Did you forget to mention re-enalbling SIP when all this is done? Also when is the latest that disabling SIP can be done? Right before launching the new OS installer?
It seems OCLP will disable SIP on installing without booting into recovery mode. I have to try this, also it looks like you can re enable SIP after all is done installing but need to look into this further.
I tried re-enable SIP. After that modification my Mac refuses to boot. Also the recovery mode (from harddrive) was no longer possible. I don't remember exactly whether I could then use the USB installation stick to get into recovery mode - or whether I had to reinstall Sonoma. I think it was like this: I still have the bootable, intact Mojave SSD. With the OCLP app on it, I was able to reassemble the OC part in the EFI and write the OCLP's MC5,1 preset configuration with partially deactivated SIP (3 selection ticks?) into the EFI of the Sonoma disk
If I am using Pro Tools Ultimate (Latest Version) do I need to stick with Monterey to have the best compatibility with plugins etc? Running a Mac Pro 5,1 with AMD RX580 with Open Core
If it's working for you I would not upgrade, but you can always try a different OS on a different drive and migrate your data to it to test it out without having to do a reinstall of all your plugins but there is a certain way to it. Sonoma works well for me on my 2019 with PT. You have to use OCLP to run newer OS, MLOC only goes to Monterey. Opencore can be on any drive it does not have to be on the system. To migrate you need to remove post patches with OCLP do the migration and things will be laggy, then after migration re install the post patches, or just try basic pro tools and see how you like it with the new OS. Plugins depend on the folks who make them as to what OS they are compatible with so you have to check with each one.

I thought OCLP resolves the boot screen issue via the installer itself, assuming that the Boot ROM Version is 144.0.0.0.0, with Mojave installed as a starting point that supports metal GPUs. Hi, my MacPro 2009 5,1 with OpenCore won‘t boot into MacOS Monterey. The Apple logo appears and nothing else happens. Not Even a progress bar appears. It also wont boot into Windows 10. After showing the Windows logo and a half spin of the progess circle the MacPro goes back to the boot picker. What can I do?
@@Flex200 was it working before? Did you do the config.plist edits before installing Monterey? You will need to put a Mojave drive in and see if you can boot from that, remove your opencore drive and Monterey drive.
@@MacSoundSolutions it worked for half a year now. If I try to boot to the recovery volume, the boot picker appears again. If I remove the opencore drive and put it back after booting into Mojave, is the Opencore drive still the startvolume?
At some point I got my MacPro booted into Monterey in safe mode until it crashes and goes back to the same behaviour like before
@@Flex200 sounds to me like it did an auto update on the OS and you are stuck in a boot loop, you need to remove opencore and boot into Mojave or hold down option and boot into Mojave which bypasses opencore if you get the Apple boot screen via enable gop or have a Apple GPU. You most likely have to reinstall Monterey and do the config.plist edits before installing it if your using Martin Lo package
@@MacSoundSolutions unfortunately I can‘t see the bootscreen. The MacPro won‘t boot into Mojave but into High Sierra. Don’t ask me why. The GPU is XFX RX570 8gb
@@Flex200 you should be able to re install opencore if you can boot into high sierra but you need to make sure SIP is turned off if it may get turned back on by booting into the old
OS.
Hey! Thanks for the great video! Can you pls help? I have a late 2016 mbpro , and recently bought a Blackmagic eGPU. After installing OLCP om Sonoma14.5 or .6 I still have eGPU, but when I install the post install drivers and root patch i loose the eGPU. How can I solve it?
What gpu is in the eGPU?
Hi lance. Why did you start from Mojave, can we do the same from Monterey?
Because I wanted to start clean, are you using OCLP? Or Martin Lo?
@@MacSoundSolutions I have a Mac Pro 5,1, with AMD Radeon RX580, using OCLP 1.5.0, and Monterey 12.7.5... With this setting can I jump to Sonoma, painless? I don't know if GOP is enabled, but OCLP shows me the boot screen,
@@AndresValdez54235you are fine bro, just update to the latest OCLP and follow instruccions from this video
@@AndresValdez54235 first you have to update OCLP to 1.5.0 which should be easy and then install Sonoma.
Hi Lance, I have the same question! Only I am using Martin Lo on my 5,1. I am currently using Monterey looking to move to Sonoma. Will I have to start fresh with Mohave?
The Radeon VII is not the most powerful you can use on Mac Pro 5,1. The Radeon RX 6900 XT ROG Strix water cooled is, provided that you can flash it for Mac. But, you cannot use macOS higher than Monterey.
that is true, what I mean is it is the most powerful / compatible GPU that will run with Sonoma and I say this in the video. I have used a RX6800XT and Monterey for a few years in my 5,1 and I do note they don't work beyond Monterey.
I thought OCLP resolves the boot screen issue via the installer itself, assuming that the Boot ROM Version is 144.0.0.0.0, with Mojave installed as a starting point that supports metal GPUs. I could be wrong, but that's been my understanding after watching too many videos preparing for jumping to Monterey via OCLP
It may turn off sip for you from what I have been told so looks like you can install without booting into recovery mode. I will have to try this.
now does this mean i can't dualboot my mac 5.1 if i install sonoma on own ssd?
I have High Sierra/windows on another hard drive. does opencore mess up if I try to start another OSX with the ALT key?
if you hold option you can boot into the old os as it bypasses opencore, keeps it from loading. But you need to have a GPU that has a boot screen or Enable GOP installed so you can see the hardrive you want to select.
@@MacSoundSolutions yes i have enableGOP thanks for your earlier video!
i tried installing sonoma and it works but when i start high sierra it breaks sonoma startup. The Sonoma logo also changes to the High Sierra logo, what help?
@@alku3540 are they on two separate drives? Is opencore installed on the Sonoma drive?
@@MacSoundSolutions Yes!
Mac 5.1 2012, EnableGOP, RX580
sonoma SSD APFS
High Sierra HDD
sonoma works fine, I can restart the computer, but as soon as I start high sierra, sonoma no longer boots
Hey Lance the Dog...
😂
I need a Xanax .
That makes two of us😅
Same here 😂
Status update regarding my (disappeared?) comment earlier today: It worked installing Sonoma 14.5 with OCLP 1.5 (but not 14.6 or 14.6.1). Monterey 12.7.4 did‘n work either. It godt stuck in a boot loop late in the install process. Booting about 15 times before I stopped it.
Now in Sonoma 14.5. Bluetooth and wifi works, but not the original/internal USB-ports. Only the USB-ports in my two PCI cards.
Any tips to make the Mac boot from an external USB connected to a PCI USB-card?
Weird your comment disappeared, don’t think you can boot off external pcie usb card you should have internal ports working try a SMC reset and it try patches again. I has no issue with my internal Mac Pro ports.
hi,I installed Sonoma on my Mac Pro 5,1 with a EFI RX580.But the wallpaper not display normal and the dock is not transparent.Have you met such problem?thanks
@@Maverick_Feng you need to install post patches also make sure you installed the latest kdk package
I really congrats peaople working this beautiful machine, but I think it is time to let it go.. jajaja. I mean, it seems too much work to deal with. Great video
@@oterotube13 most folks using them are pretty hip to the whole opencore thing, I know my video makes it’s seem more complex than it is but opencore legacy patcher has made it quite easy and walks you through the process. Still viable for many things, and dirt cheap to buy.
Hi, my 5,1 runs Catalina 10.15.7 and have a gtx 680 for mac. Can I jump to the last Apple update directly?
Yes if you first install opencore legacy patcher and follow directions, you can’t install Sonoma without it. But you can go from Catalina to Sonoma. Are you already using opencore legacy patcher? You need version 1.5.0 watch my latest video.
Im gonna try to install open core legacy patcher now. Should i use this video or the one your made 4 months ago?
@@tommygagne3871 this one but I think you can skip Turing off SIP OCLP should do it for you.
@@MacSoundSolutions thank you for the video I finally got it working. Only thing is, I’m stuck a 30hz instead of 60hz, on the same resolution than before.
@@tommygagne3871 could be the video driver which OCLP injects the old drivers into the OS. You could try a pram reset but sometimes that can unless opencore. Try a different cable and a different port on the graphics card, also a third party app like www.madrau.com
Hello Lance, been following you for a long time with CPU ugardes etc. With this I have RX580 pulse and after putting RX580 in (20:14 Shutdown and install new GPU), Option key won't bring up screen as is black. Any ideas? I don't want to do GOP..
@@jemimabaker697 so you can’t see the efi to select it, do you have the old Apple graphics card to put back in? Install it and select the efi then put the 580 in and run root patches again. Let me know if that works. I forgot that when you holding option at boot it bypasses opencore but since I have enableGOP I was able to see the boot screen. I need to make a follow up video because I have a few flaws, it seems you don’t need to disable SIP that OCLP will do it for you but I have to test that first when I have some time.
I have GT120 and Radeon HD 5770 and RX580 Pulse(unflashed). 3 x Mac pro 2010, one is 12core running ML Open Core, runs fine. I want to move up to Sonoma so new to OCLP. I have not done GOP. This seems to be a huge thing onlne that people get stuck when swapping to RX580. I do get the efi to select to install but gets error at times. Once I sus it I will let you know. BTW, I love the pace you teach at.
@@jemimabaker697 sounds to me like you may have a modded rom in your 580. Do all the ports on it work as they should?
I bought it new from Amazon 4gb RX580 Pulse. Am still trying to get Installed. BTW, I just realised thus is my daughters login. I am David. Been using macs since 1990
@@jemimabaker697 When you installed Opencore Legacy Patcher did it install the KDK package, it needs to do that for the 580.
OR!! . . . . will Enable GOP work with OCLP spoofed firmware (999.99.99.99)?
It will because when you hold option on boot it bypasses opencore boot loader.
FIRMWARE ISSUE: How do I get back to 144.0.0.0 if OCLP has spoofed firmware to 999.99.99.99 . . ?
@@duggojnr you don’t need to if you are using OCLP. Just install the latest version. But if you remove the opencore drive and boot into Mojave it will revert back to the old number. It’s spoofing it not actually changing it.
