There is a decent film "Brathory" by Jakubisko Films, that presents what many historians now believe; that Elizabeth was framed for these crimes. She was alone after her husband died and a woman in such power during the 1600's was very vulnerable. As mentioned in the video, even the king owed her money. Men who tried to protect her were poisoned.

I loved Bathory the film, and I am glad that historians actually went way deeper into all the stories. It's not exactly a secret that *all* nobility were brutal to their servants all the time. She was very powerful, had the most amount of money of all the nobles in her time after her husband died and the king wanted to get rid of her. Because a WOMAN having money and power?! Preposterous!

Definitely possible. There was that guy in medieval France who was accused of “satanic” crimes. But in a highly fundamentalist xtian prescientific era I’m sure plenty of peoples delusions and psychotic episodes were tinged with religious/satanic overtones. S’part of what makes it interesting.

It is a fantastic video, as all of your work. I hope you don’t mind me noting though that Dracula was not exactly a hungarian - he was born in Transylvania and he was the Voivode of Wallachia. His name (Vlad Tepes) is not a hungarian name either. I felt that this fact should be highlighted.

However, the lady, whose nickname would become "Countess Dracula" was the very Hungarian Erzsébet Báthory...the subject of this video.

His last name wasn't exactly 'tepes', and he was a Romanian. Close though. Lol

Funny thing about this whole Dracula thingy is the guy who was so berated and made as boogeyman by Christianity, may have been actually savior of Christiniaty from ambitious Ottoman sultan’s , at least unintentionally. Good deed never goes unpunished 😂

I think she was partially a victim in all this. Thing is though, if they only wanted to frame her why attribute so many deaths to her? They didn't care about the peasants, only the lower nobles. Do I think she killed all those girls? I'm not sure, but it seems odd to stack so much against her if they had planned to frame her to begin with.

My Great Grandmother came from Hrad Saris now known as Velky Saris in Slovakia which was part of the Kingdom of Hungary. She was born a noble but, she and her sister left before World War 1 and came to the U.S. Our ancestors along with other nobles presided over the Countess Bathory's trial some 500 years ago. Our family was located in what is today eastern Slovakia her territory was in the western part. We didn't know this until about 15 years ago when my Uncle got involved with genealogy and went to where to Hungary and Slovakia.

Great video. I've watched other videos about her and not one mentioned that she was inbred. Was she a victim or a predator? Sadly it sounds like she evolved from one into the other. It happens like that sometimes.

    • @estherthefirst
      @estherthefirst 5 місяців тому

Why would anyone mention that, Inbreeding was such a normalised part of all of western culture, and many other parts of the world. It’s not the most surprising. And if you do things like what she did I don’t care where you come from, what happened to you you’re not normal.

Erszebet batorii was bricked into a wall and left to die when she was caught bleeding out babies. Vlad tepesç and the countess never met in life. Both had been known to bathe in human blood, especially that of virgins. The treasure of count Nadozhdy was never found, not was the body of countess batorii.

might have to review my understanding of the Dracula story.. i thought it went back to the 14th century when the Czekely overlords were ruling in the Transylvania County of the Kingdom of Hungary and the Count had gone off to defend against the Ottoman conquerors but had failed to return and his Countess had jumped out the castle tower which led him to do blood sacrifices.... legends will do that !!! The obvious or logic truth ( if there is one ) is more likely based on the cruel measures taken by this bloodline to eliminate other bloodlines in order to keep the order of bloodline orders - legends - they are meant to tell a version of a story - like Batman who was Bruce Wayne when Wayne and Bruce meant something near Michigan and Detroit Or like Jekyll and Hyde who were bloodlines that inspired the story of Jekyll Island and of the character with two ( or more ) personalities.
Thanks for your version...... put a few fangs in the mouth of a few people and there you go - your fantastic story becomes a Halloween theme and sells movies and products to ppl looking for cheap thrills
Was there a Lady Bathory ? Likely, but was she a fraud who sold a story to satisfy her mental ego or was she a bloodthirsty vampire ?
edit - hmm !! 1130 you mention the Ottoman who may have plotted their revenge by conspiring against the Bathory bloodline or someone associated to them in Transylvania.... sounds like an open and closed case of reality turned into fantasy 🤫🤕😵‍💫🥸

I firmly believe she was innocent and thank you for being true to history by mentioning the fact she may have been innocent.
She most likely was innocent in my opinion because the victim count is extremely exaggerated. Sources indicate she practiced forbidden medicine and was the closest thing to a Dr the kingdom had at the time.
Her servant girls would’ve gotten sick from all sorts….. but I’m guessing a fair few would’ve been raped, and gotten pregnant, a almost certain death sentence in those days. There’s also the fact she was a loving caring mother.
She appears to be a stern woman but what woman in-charge isn’t? She would’ve had to have been stern, she was the head of her house, she had her late-husbands legacy to maintain, a huge family honour because of who her father would’ve been…….. a tremendous amount of pressure for a woman in the early 1600’s.
Now her servant girl is pregnant, she can’t hide it, Elizabeth notices and asks how, who? (This servant is now useless for work) not to mention the girl has no where to go or turn to, what happens? Elizabeth’s motherly instincts kick in and she starts tacking care of the girl but for 1 of 1000 reasons the girl dies…… it’s 1600’s Europe after all🤷‍♂️ she does this for most of her servant girls but it results in rumours of witchcraft, torture, questions…..
She was innocent in my opinion but she got off easy compared to what could’ve happened to her.
Innocent Nobles and Women both got it rough if accused of heinous crimes….. if there was any truth to the allegations then her titles, wealth, family background etc none of that would’ve saved her from being put to the stake.
Those who condemned her knew she was innocent and just gave her a life sentence to help sleep at night. They were too concerned about politics, their own bank account, and their own eternal souls….. as god fearing men I think Thurzo and king mathias would’ve preferred not to end her life.
Think about it…… Anne Boleyn was the queen of England not a dutchess, and was accused of witchcraft, incest and treason…… they took her head quicker than you can f around and find out. And she was most likely guilty, not innocent
