It reels of desperation to me. I did hear a theory that there's a story line where Dr. Doom is Stark who was brought back to life. Maybe they are using that to justify his return. If they go that route, it completely diminishes Endgame.
They'll probably make Dr. Doom an alternate, evil version of Tony Stark (which has happened in the comics). I think Disney is just desperate at this point. It's unfortunate because I really wanted an actual adaptation of Victor von Doom that doesn't suck.
growing up i saw writers take "okay" or even crap storylines and retcon them into passable fare. John Byrne brought back Jean Grey, and Ed Brubaker brought back Bucky Barnes. An excellent writer can fix this mess. the problem is that management is bereft of creativity.
Agreed. However, Stephen McFreely has only two years to write both screenplays, and I doubt he can fix much of the MCU in so little time. McFreely had a solid basis and a whole movie last time to fix characters like Iron Man. But, this time, he has nothing to work off of and no dictation over character development. He's stuck with what he's given, which is not good at all. Maybe McFreely can pull off a Hail Mary-he is a talented writer-but we'll have to see.
That was Chris Claremont who turned Jean Grey (formally known as Marvel Girl) into having the powerful Phoenix force in 1976 before John Byrne even worked at Marvel. John Byrne was hired in 1977 and was tasked with being the artist for "The UnCanny X-Men." The "Dark Phoenix Saga" story line started being plotted in 1976 with monthly releases of "The Uncanny X-Men" comic and it eventually came to a head in 1980 and end in 1981. John Byrne helped with some plot elements, but the writing was mostly Chris Claremont and Byrne did the art. Comics typically have a lot longer time to plot out story lines with the bonuses of monthly releases setting up and establishing the story to the audience. The MCU doesn't have this luxury and it'd be hard for any good writer for film to fix this mess within a two years tops before production/principal photography. The MCU hasn't established who any of the new Avengers will be, let alone an overall story line other than something multiverse blah blah blah. They probably move on from the Avengers and try to establish The Fantastic Four and X-Men.

I don't see how this is a good idea. If he's not a Stark variant, why does he have his face? If his face is obscured, why's he there? If an actor's known as a beloved hero, why make him an evil villain, except for some Jake Skywalker-level deconstruction?
RDJ saying "different mask, same task" sounds like a subtle (or not so subtle) shade for "carrying this whole franchise AGAIN" like he even sounded bored and exasperated when he said it. I wonder how much they are paying him. I really don't blame him either.
I noticed that, too. He didn't sound thrilled and like he was truly endorsing the "diferent mask same task" plan but more like he's contractually obligated to sound positive about his job duties. It's like when you read book cover review quotes that say "a very different kind of story -- author this" and "it's really something -- author that" and "like nothing I've ever read before -- author the-other" and notice that not one of them actually says anything in unambiguous praise for the novel's story or writing skill itself. . I wonder if he actually signed onto the movie itself or if he was already contracted for a specific number of films to the studio, and so now here's just the next one in line for him.
I thought the early MCU films didn't have a plan, and the Infinity Stones were inserted as a one-off. Either way, RDJ is Iron Man and you can't just recast him into a big role like this. For an animated series or a video game, sure, but not a live action film or series. And wtf was that suit he was wearing? Did someone run out to Spirit Halloween to dress him?
Disney might be making Dr. Doom an evil multiverse version of Tony Stark. I hope they're not. And yeah, I hope that's not what they're going to dress Dr. Doom in. Looks more like something RDJ would wear on St. Patrick's Day.
I haven't looked this up recently, but I'm pretty sure Phase 1 was only building up to The Avengers. At some point after the success of The Avengers, they decided they were going to work towards Infinity War. The Thanos tease after the credits was just an arbitrary sequel hook, not an indication of any long-term plan.

Completely agree. That first scene with all the avengers in a circle in New York was over 4 years in the making. That was epic. You can’t force that. What they have to work with in these phases can not be put together to reproduce anything near that moment
I can’t get excited about upcoming Avengers films because I can’t even imagine who “the Avengers” are anymore. Who are the core characters now? Who are the new Big Five? There's like a 10% chance sometime genuinely good comes out of this. I can get over a weird casting if it's done well, but the fish rots from the head, and the head still looks rotten. I hope they pleasantly surprise us though
The question is based on WHICH character will this be based on and how this "new hope" of MCU will un-F the bad written phase 4-5 ? Also which projects are currently in production ( having the BAD MCU writing ) and how this can be tied to the new direction they try to make. The problem with MCU was not the character but the writing and the agenda tried to pushed HARD, and as I read from what happened with DP&W Marvel haven't learned, they just forced to allow DP to do what Reynolds wanted
They genderbent Deadpool Let me repeat this: they, after D&W did like $450M on its first weekend, decided that their next step was to kill wade and swapping him out with a "superior" female counterpart. I really hope this blows up on their faces.
The problem with bringing back all of the people who made those four best Marvel movies from before, is that this puts a cap on anything good that they can do. In other words, if they were a competent entertainment house they would also be bringing in new people to take the flag for the future. The problem is that they are incompetent at choosing new people, as they have proven for the past several years. So Disney is still doomed. No pun intended.
I predicted this would be divisive as soon as I saw that first image. They will lose half the normies if RDJ doesn’t play Tony Stark. They will lose all the Diehards for making Doom a Tony Stark variant and not Victor Von Doom. And this very weak defence of ‘BuT dOoM aNd iRoN mAn hAvE sWaPpEd pLaCeS bEfOrE!¡!’ Yes. But who wanted the MCU to feature ‘Doom that appeared less than 1% of the time in the comics.’ Nobody.
This new line of movies is too heavily dependent on poorly developed, unpopular characters. Even Doom was silly at first in the comics. But writers had so many years to develop him, that he became a great antagonist. Sure, his powers and attributes became incredible, but it's also (or even more?) because of the history that he shared with the different heroes that he evetually became one of the most beloved Marvel villains. The new movies' creators will have too few opportunities to establish him as a major, existential threat, and the heroes Marvel has on hand at the present time are not at the level needed to stop Doom at his peak (as shown in the comics). If they nerf Doom to make him beatable by Ms. Marvel... then we know it's going to be crap.
I do miss Greg's preachy stuff. He has a real knack for it. Self-improvement and being a better citizen of the world. That stuff is sooooo good! The ONLY way RDJ as Doom can work is if he never takes his mask off. If he takes his mask off then they have to throw in some unoriginal multiverse nonsense about evil Tony Stark.
I was mixed when the news was announced and I still am. On some level I think it could work. RDJ is a good actor and I think he could handle Doom well. Sad to say but this could be the best live action version of Doom…if they actually handle it well then it could work. But yeah, I’m also worried. Someone new as Doom would have been more ideal. I don’t love abusing the multiverse stuff since it hasn’t been a great element. Really does risk making everything so utterly pointless. It’s utterly desperate. Unbelievably so. Though that they are desperate at least shows that they might have noticed that this hasn’t been working. Might mean utter disaster. Though desperation might let them pull off a miracle.
I'm not a fan, but it also depends on whether he is Victor Von Doom or a Tony Stark variant. There is no one from this current group of "heroes" that I'm interested in. Another thing to consider is that only one of the writers is coming back as well. We'll see how it goes. hoping for the best, but not expecting anything much. 😅

hey hey, we just need to wait a few years for the true funny content:
"Somehow Thanos returned"
Disneys DowneyJr doctor doom
The poop jokes 🤣. Also the D monologue was duplicity delicious.
I also just realized the video title words also start with D
I thought it was a D Diatribe
It reels of desperation to me. I did hear a theory that there's a story line where Dr. Doom is Stark who was brought back to life. Maybe they are using that to justify his return. If they go that route, it completely diminishes Endgame.
If Lucasfilm can devalue Anakin's sacrifice, Marvel saw that and thinks, "hang on there, let us one up you!"
And also where tf did Thanos go lol and what was the point in the MCU…
A Greg video to start the day? That’s always a win.
A win for us both! I’m glad you’re here
6:40 That Aliteration Sillioquy has more THOUGHT and PASSION put into it than 90% of Disney's last 10 projects😭
Fr I literally clapped it was so good 😂
They'll probably make Dr. Doom an alternate, evil version of Tony Stark (which has happened in the comics). I think Disney is just desperate at this point. It's unfortunate because I really wanted an actual adaptation of Victor von Doom that doesn't suck.
I agree
growing up i saw writers take "okay" or even crap storylines and retcon them into passable fare.
@@bIametheniIe how could i slight the IMCOMPARABLE Chris Claremont whose stories proved to be a constant companion in my only childhoodedness?! Yes, I believe i saw a Claremont interview on a sci fi channel where he talked about the saga. Claremont's writing was an absolute gift.
Dude, that deluge of D-words definitely did dominate the discourse of the day. Fuck, that's hard to do 😆 great video!
Imagine adapting Doctor Doom in a way that will not only show his face, but will require it to be shown more than his mask to get your "Investment" back.
Not my fiancee and I sitting here during your mid-video rant, like: "LET'S GOOOO, ALLITERATION!!" She was literally clapping. Then going back and seeing the video caption! And then the thumbnail!! Now THAT is sticking to a theme. This is just another reminder that Mr. Owen is top tier.
6:34 Holy Alliteration, Batman!
@6:34 The most epic alliteration I've ever encountered. Well done sir.
RDJ is a actor and he can play whoever he wants to. He is not iron man he is RDJ an actor.
The infinity stones weren't introduced until Phase 2.
The tesseract had no hint that it held a stone.
Look forward to that long Acolyte video. Personally love long form content and would love to some from my favorite Dadtuber.
I will not hear a single word against Ow My Balls
Ballbusting actually can be fun!
I regret that I have but ONE like to give for that most amazing alliteration on the letter D and STILL delivering exactly the message you intended. All punctuated by a modest (but not-so-secretly self-satisfied) sip of tea. Well done, good sir. Well done!
12:18, Spider-Man (2002), Batman Begins the first X-Men movie and even the first Iron Man movie all worked as films even if you hadn’t previously seen another superhero movie at any point in your life. Their greatness spawned their sequels. I know they had plans for sequels but they didn’t rely upon major movie franchises.
I feel like my wife just cheated on me and we broke up. Now she is telling me what I want to hear so we get back together. I also see how she is treating her cousin ( The Acolyte). I don’t trust her. I might have relations( See the movies) but I’m not emotionally invested ( not giving them money). I hope this makes sense. It’s over Disney. I gave you money and I didn’t like what you did with it.
Yep, I think a lot of the audience wants a clean break and none of this constant getting back together for one night every now and again “for closure”
Dang. That’s exactly how it feels. Deadpool and wolverine can be considered one of those relations. It felt like we were back together again. Like those happy days. But listening to the online discourse and watching that announcement brought me back to reality.
@@LazyReaderKanon You just have to see it as a Fox entity not Disney at this point,And disregard any influence from Disney as it’s not their movie essentially…Whatever Disney does now is black listed personally.
Yep, they're just jangling keys. Stay strong, don't go back for that booty call. The line up of current Avengers they've been teeing up is a total dumpster fire that you couldn't pay me to watch.
@@jonw7937Well said!
I’ve wanted Doom for so long, and this truly has me worried.
I really hope Doom isn’t full of quippy one liners.
Agreed. He seems like such a great character to explore the morality of being a hero the way they did with Civil War. Fingers crossed he’s not a goofball
@@gregowen2022 Magneto is similar and the first X-Men film did it well -- he believed he was the hero and was dead serious about everything, leaving the quips to the X-Men.
I have no confidence in Disney to pull this off, especially with RDJ. He could've been a great Doom 20 years ago, but he was cast as Iron Man.
Bet $100 they're gonna have a gag with him standing in line at a sharawna shop
If they're going to use RDJ for this, they had better take full advantage of the fact that he actually has range as an actor.
Lmao hes gonna be ultron , a serious evil villain turned into a jokester
When the foundation is corrupt, there's literally no way to construct a solid building. MCU is currently built on sand and the storm is yet to arrive.

I’m morbidly curious about to see how Robert Downey Jr will do as Doctor Doom.
I'm not.
He's totally wrong for that role
it wouldn't matter who they brought in as an actor, disney is disney...
if they announced they were firing all their writers, directors, and CEO's, and were hiring people who actually represent the 90+% of society, I might be interested... they can keep the same actors, or not.
A lot of people seem to be making "I hate Disney" into their personality.

Greg Owen: Yes.
This only works if this is a variant of Tony Stark. How can they just think we’ll just look at RDJ and not think of Tony Stark after spending 10+ years with the character
It'll probably be a variant that lost the fight against Thanos.
here's big brain move. never show Dr.dooms face. or make it like deadpool where his face is really disfigured and you only get to see it occasionally.

Marvel had no intention of bringing back the Russo brothers. It was one of RDJ's conditions for coming back at all.

They’re going to do a mashup of Hickman’s Secret Wars and Bendis’ Infamous Iron Man, which had Dr. Doom become Iron Man. They’ll have a multiversal Stark become Doom. Or in the Fantastic Four’s universe, Doom just looks like Stark.
By casting RDJ as Doom, they have already messed up. Doom is a biggie that everyone has been waiting for, so now this reveal sucks all of the excitement away and fills the void with uncertainty and just plain head scratching. It reeks of the fact that they are going to ruin Doom by veering way off course from the beloved villain. I don't even care, honestly.
I appreciate how you preface your "like" jokes with the proper dad-joke grin (uh... no pun intended, I swear). It really adds +50% more dad-ness to each quip. It's a really good deal for my like-dollar.

People aren’t developing standards. The zeitgeist is shifting, and the “nerd stuff” fad is on its way out.

well after they destroyed it with agenda pushing. i would watch this stuff if it wasnt so f**king "if you dont watch it your homophobic, and you are a racist." it just dosnt make me wanna watch it, deadpool and wolverene I've been told is a great movie, and it dosnt have that focus on esg... so it just feels good to watch, and the people watching it reflect that, as its been the best thing disney has put out... and i think they know it, and its why they cant keep making these girl boss movies/ shows, cause thats not marketing to there fans... thats marketing towards themselves.
what ever the case may be, i hope this is a good sign, and not a bad one, a move in the right direction... hopefully, maybe... but its just a wait and see..
This is basically all the bad ideas rolled up into one massively bad idea.
The first Iron Man trailer gave me goosebumps. The Iron Maiden song playing while the tank exploded, he walking away without looking, all the build up showing him as a confident playboy full of himself... But, after YEARS of those people crapping over us and demanding fans to swallow whatever they've thrown at our faces, it just doesn't stick anymore.
I'm quite surprised you didn't include the word "doom" in that otherwise VERY impressive alliteration rant!
Hard core Dr Doom alliteration. Thumbs up.
I loved the Lego movie "sarcastic quotations" - genuinely made me laugh!
I don't doubt Robert's ability to play a villainous character, nor do I doubt his ability to play a convincing European man. What I'm almost sure we will get however, is a thinly veiled evil Tony Stark.
It already happened once with Ultron, I see no reason for this to be any different.
As a loyal Greg-ular (who also happens to be named "Greg"), I love your takes on almost everything you cover, but today I'm here to say that you don't get enough praise for your smash-cut game. Was not expecting that A7X bit. Great video as always
"Nonplussed" means extremely surprised, or if you want to get as literal as possible based on the etymology, "maximally surprised to such an extent that it would not be possible to be more surprised." In any case, nonplussed is not a synonym for "nonchalant" or "casual" or "disinterested"--quite the opposite.
INFORMAL•NORTH AMERICAN

@@gregowen2022I'm not a Star Wars fan. So I don't know what happened. But I'm guessing they unalived him and had their way with the body after, based on what I just saw.
Agreed. Also, and avengers movie on 2026, really? Even if I was happy about Robert Doomsy Jr. They hand't build a new avengers team that can replace the old avengers. It will have Thor, because why not, the new Captain America, who is ok, and maybe spiderman.... And who else? The old avengers was exciting because they took damn 5 years to build it. Will the new Avengers be a success? I don't know, but I know I won't go to watch it.
Who are we supposed to root for? It’s just a big mush. Frankly, they don’t have an Avengers team that’s worthy of Dr. Doom (no matter who plays him.) I just don’t see a path forward.
That is some seriously impressive alliteration, mate
"The opposite of love isn't hatred, it's indifference"
Tbh i feel like they probably should have just stopped after end game.
If they'd taken some time away, and only come back once they had a really good idea, then I might've kept watching. Instead they've just cemented the idea that they don't have any good ideas left. I feel like they'll carry that stain for a long time, even if they manage to turn things around.
To me, it ended with Infinity War. End Game is too poorly written. Ex: they could have healed Iron Man using the Time Stone, at the end.
My prediction is RDJ will make more than the actual movies he's in.
The way the like button lit up after he said to press it, was awesome!
12:04, if they just brought back stand-alone superhero movies then they could have a Fantastic Four movie with Lewis Strauss as Dr. Doom and have it be good. Thanks to the MCU connection they’re having their Dr. Doom be Iron Man
There's like a 10% chance sometime genuinely good comes out of this. I can get over a weird casting if it's done well, but the fish rots from the head, and the head still looks rotten. I hope they pleasantly surprise us though
Concise yet comprehensive, cogent, caustic, and cohesive criticism
I agree with everything you said Mr.D, please don't kill me...
I’m hopeful that RDJ is a misdirect and we meet the real Doom.
They genderbent Deadpool
Let me repeat this: they, after D&W did like $450M on its first weekend, decided that their next step was to kill wade and swapping him out with a "superior" female counterpart.
I appreciate the alliteration lol
It can be cringe if it's too forced, but you pulled it off.
Much appreciated! I do love a good alliterated bit
I predicted this would be divisive as soon as I saw that first image.
They will lose half the normies if RDJ doesn’t play Tony Stark. They will lose all the Diehards for making Doom a Tony Stark variant and not Victor Von Doom.

Good alliteration, sir. Jolly good alliteration.
I was wondering where the Acolyte video was. I'm so sorry you have to go through that...
Too bad the doggone algorithm punishes creators for videos that don't get huge traffic. Thankfully, his range of stuff is very satisfying and top drawer as well!

The ONLY way RDJ as Doom can work is if he never takes his mask off. If he takes his mask off then they have to throw in some unoriginal multiverse nonsense about evil Tony Stark.
Whatever the case, RDJ as Doom clearly shows that they are going to do our favorite villain completely wrong.
It's always entertaining to see all the fresh and new ideas Disney comes up with in order to fuck everything up. Wow!
For those who are curious: the "cargo cults" reference is from a sargon of akkad video with that name.
