I think that even if the film turns out to be lousy, its box office results will be worth watching.
Maybe it'll be a surprise hit like Barbie. (UPD: And Joker.)
That would send a clear signal that victim-mentality films can be successful so long as they focus on only one target audience, even without any connections to an existing brand name.
If that signal is sent and producers receive it, we can expect all sorts of divisive nastiness to crawl out of the woodwork.
Not just in Hollywood, but _everywhere._ Especially in countries where many members of the majority consider themselves to be victimized by minorities.
I would also recommend double toasted video on this, but I appreciate your balanced views on this 🤔.
This film seems less like it's really trying to commentate on trope and more like it's just using it as a gimmicky backdrop for this rom com.
I think that if they really wanted comment on this trope they should indeed had someone darker than Justice Smith and his love interest should be a white woman.
Doing all of that would also commentate on the trope of them not putting a darker-skined person in the main role let alone with a white woman as his love interest (look up the controversy with something like Hitch) 🤔.
In addition, I think that's often been one of the real problem with this trope, is that for a long time the magical negro role was one of the few roles a black man was expected to play. Therefore, if it still pops up today it can feel like we are still limiting the roles and images we give black actors.
Some last notes, 8:44 I imagine what they are trying to go for is less the feeling that you make everyone uncomfortable if you're the only black person in a room filled with white people, and more the feeling that you're uncomfortable being the only black person in the room, especially if people look at you funny and you don't know what they are thinking. I think perhaps something like Get Out did a better job of portraying this 🤔.

When I saw the Harry Potter style font, I thought this movie was a spinoff for the Fantastic Beasts franchise about the black American wizards creating an HBCU (historically black college/university) version of Hogwarts. 😂

This is why Blazing Saddles is and always will be the best satire about race relations, ever. In the end, they realize that there are morons(who just need patience) and there are actual evil people that are after everyone.

As an Asian migrant, honestly, I feel scared going near black people due to several bad experiences. I know there are good black people out there, but majority are just rude. I was once flexed off the side walk into oncoming traffic. And the group of black teenagers just laughed.
Professional setting, I avoid black people at work. I work in the hospital and the rudest coworkers I have were black women. I moved out of New York as soon as I could.
The Magical N3egr0e trope looks like a race swap of the common trope in martial arts of "the mystical/wise master" and it came from way before in the first Kung fun movies and we've been seeing it in movies like The Last Dragon, Kick Boxer, Karate Kid, Kill Bill and so... And it's just the modern interpretation of the wise figure that guides the hero in the first part or though out he's journey, like Virgil in Dante's Inferno in the Divine Comedy. Anyway, not a movie I would watch even for free in streaming.

Honestly, the irony is that many of these writers/directors cast black people in these roles to be more progressive and show that wisdom can come from anywhere. Then there's people who come around and find something racist about it, totally undoing what the original intent was. They are working against themselves.

Can we PLEEEEASE, get back to making movies for entertainment. I haven't spent money to go to the theater in about 3yrs, that includes movies that are suppose to be for kids. I just wait for all of the reviews and for the movie to come out on a streaming service somewhere.

A feel good movie with likeable characters who do admirable things and get along. Some humor from human interactions. With timeless themes and an interesting plot. Maybe a good character arc as the protagonist grows.
I’m ok with changing a fictional white character to a POC, but in the case of making a historical figure Anne Boleyn black when she was not, just seems so pointless and hollow. That was totally inserting into white culture and history when instead they could have just chosen to tell an African or black story instead. In an age where people need to see “themselves” onscreen, what was the point of that? So little girls of color could think “one day I can be queen of England”?
Let’s make a movie about black people crying over reparations for something that happened 150 years ago and has nothing to do with a majority of white people today.
A lot of the movies being put out by Hollywood these days are made bc it's the cheaper route.
That's why we're getting so many re-boots, comic book sequels and race swapped movies these days. It's cheaper to make those than to make something original and unique.
Even the last Indiana Jones movie didn't feel like an authentic Indiana Jones movie bc they leaned too heavily into the "washed up University Professor" trope. Didn't seem like an authentic personality trait in Mr. Jones.
And even that sequel was only made bc everyone was so infuriated by Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which I thought was way more unique and original than that last one.
I'm actually quite glad when people don't notice me/talk to me... I find most social things annoying, uncomfortable and I'd rather just do my thing and go home
I am convinced that they made this movie not as a farce or commentary or satire or anything along those lines, but with absolute sincerity. They *believe* this, 100%. They just thought it was "the right time". Not yet, it seems, but every day they're a little closer to being correct.

This reminds me so much of All In The Family where Michael, the liberal, is told he is racist by his black friend. When he says how he is always talking about the race issues with him. The Black guy says that is why. Michael says what do you want me to talk about, the weather. Black guy answers why not Black people have weather too.
if this was like a legitimate magical thrillier with a mildly irreverant/comedic spin I could honestly see it being a slam dunk, unfortunately, I doubt that. American Gods is sort of the bizarro version of what I'm talking about in that, it did take itself mostly seriously, but then had random bits of *_the message_* dropped in that, at least in my opinion, worked against it. A series that took an insane premise but played it mostly seriously with just a twinge of irreverancy could be quite good.
PS. I really hate how bastardized 'subversion' has become. I got sick and tired of it too until I watched MHA recently (what with the MCU being a trainwreck for the past few years) and it reminded me "oh right, subversion is actually like a thing that can be done well without just despising the original concept". It reminds me of the whole "90% of sci fi is crap" "90% of everything is crap" thing because we've (myself included) just got so used to crap writers using "it's being subversive" as an excuse for bad writing that we've sort of all just collectively forgotten it can be done well. Unlike "_blank_ fatigue" thing I can't even blame the people who legitimately just never want to hear another thing be subverted ever again because *_holy crap it is all just so bad now_*

I always use Madoka Magica as an example of how to do subversion well. Good subversion looks at a trope and asks 2 questions. "Why is it this way? And what would happen if we apply real world logic to this situation?" Hollywood writers just look at audience expectations and do the opposite so they can get a cheap surprise.
Appalling. Is this a deliberate dud--like Springtime for Hitler in The Producers? The only thing that could save this is some real comedy. Not a chance. I read someone's note that it would have all the blockbuster power of Bros. Makes me wish for Mel Brooks and Blazing Saddles.
8:32 I've seen LILLIES OF THE FIELD. It's not a "magical minority" movie. Like in HITCH, Sidney Poitier is the main character with a full arc and everything. The nuns in the film believe he was sent by God, and I suppose that's open to interpretation, but calling it a "magical minority" film is inaccurate.
Arguably Bagger Vance is the main character of The Legend of Bagger Vance. I know, it's completely breaking the mold to have the titular character also be the main character. But if you think about it the mystery surrounding him is the whole point of the movie. Matt Damon just serves as an anchor point because he's the connection between Bagger Vance and the rest of the characters.
Also, Chubbs had a story. He was a golfer whose career ended when an alligator bit off his hand.
This trope has gone through major concept creep. Like the first people to complain about it focused solely on magical/ mystical characters. It then expanded to black characters that help white people, to black characters that are sort of selfless.
A premise like this can actually work especially if there intent is to make a satire which has been done before. But you have to make it in a certain way that does not come out as offensive which I guess the people that made this are not that creative to do something like this. Blazing Saddles is a perfect example of this one of Mel Brooks funniest movie that has offensive material but man is it funny.

I’m from the UK, and of course through the medium of UA-cam, I have come across this trailer.
My initial reaction to the title made me put my head in my hands and laugh incredulously.
“Oh, come on!” I said to myself.
As I continued to watch, I said to myself: “With everybody and everything looking more and more on the edge, here’s this BS to set the effort, the genuine effort, of people slowly coming to the realisation that we as humans have more in common than not, and that there’s bad actor’s out there who make a living keeping us apart?… Well this s*** is going to set that back even further… F*** sake!”
Then from nowhere, as if by magic, (see what I did there? 😏) it’s now a Rom-Com????????!!!!!!!!

I think in the order of balance to your comical Vid here, to which you made valid points, I have to tell you that we’re not a monolithic set of people.

Anyway here is a summary of what I was referring to:
1. all the leaders of every faction (including deities) are female. Except the the ones that are white male villains of course.
2. the refugee story has (again only white males) complaining about the incredibly diverse refugees coming into the otherwise incredibly diverse city. On what grounds exactly? Dunno. It feels like a shoehorned commentary about refugees in Europe or the US.
Anyway, these are minor annoyances in an otherwise great game. The all female leaders thing was a bit eye rolling to me, but at least they felt like real individuals, not all acting the same and hating men for keeping them down or something.
You'll have to try a more 'good' run sometime :D

Yes indeed. Writers, Just write interesting stories with fun characters and then feel free to make them any color or sex you like.
It's just another classic example of racism being turned into big business. People may think racism is on the rise in America (despite it basically disappearing from mainstream culture for decades)...and that's simply due to money. There are too many people with a vested interest in racism continuing to exist in the mainstream narrative - entire companies, celebrities, politicians, etc. exist solely on the funds it generates.
On the movie side, this absolutely smacks of a self-insert with the body-armour of claimed "bigotry" (a hilarious term which is often used by bigots, weirdly).
There's a show on Netflix that covers several areas in the world where people live longer, to try and find out some common denominators. One of the factors was that many of these people are disconnected from all the drama in the world that we see every second on social media. So, mentally, they are much healthier because they primarily focus on their day to day living. I think this relates to race relations in that many of us, without the influence of media/social media, would get along just fine in person. As humans, we share a lot more in common than we think. It's only what we are fed on a daily basis that separates us by race and politics, and makes us more uncomfortable with each other. This film is just another form of media that focuses us on why we are different, vs. why we are the same.
I love the sigma male concept. Yes, guys, you don't have a girlfriend or any friends because you're too into your own stuff, and that intimidates others. It's definitely not because your social skills leave a lot to be desired.

I think that the more we put others in boxes like the redpill and the like. We create those things we see.
I lost my fiancé a few years back and have started trying to date again and it’s harder it seems and I think it’s bc so many people are taking on what these groups are saying about them which then makes other groups say that the first group is X.

I had some amazing conversations with friends of all races once i clued into what i think is a massive difference.
And like you said possible a privelage
I asked friends of all races about their upbringing and i couldnt find one white family who ever mentioned race while they grew up (i know its not all but this is my sample)
However when i asked friends of all other colors they definitely had race talk growing up. Asians must marry asians (specific to country) indians must marry indians, blacks must marry blacks etc. They spoke of other racial groups too. And not favorably. In that category though there were families who raised their kids to not have any racial bias.
Now we were all friend so no one was actually mean.
It was very eyeopening because helped me understand why i had such a hard time dealing with the race based talk.
We realized the same group of ppl who disliked race talk were the same ppl who didnt have any form of racism pushed on them as a kid. White black asian or indian. If your parents took the hippie ideals to heart and truely didnt raise you with racial animosity you had a hard time joining in on race hating stuff.
It also helped me reconcile how ppl could be so mean and angry and assume i (a white person) felt about them the same way they felt about me
it made sense that they would assume my family talked the same as all theirs did.

What I find interesting is how it changed. Christopher John Farley wrote about it in Time before Lee's more famous lecture. Both however focused on the magical aspect, and mentioned only movies with magical or mystical characters. Later the focus in scholarly analysis has focused on the selflessness of the character. I was on the Vegas Strip last week with the typical timeshare salesman pushing their product. Two of the Black guys had to let me know they were black. I'm sure glad they pointed that out. Here's my stance on The American Society of Magical Negroes:
The trailer is pretty bad. It ruins the potentially interesting premise that this movie could bring with stupid anti-white jokes and generic rom-com tropes. But at the same time, it's just the trailer. Trailers aren't always representative of the movie that they're for. They sometimes leave out crucial information, or give off a tone that the movie doesn't actually have. So it could be that this is just a bad trailer and that the movie itself will actually be good. Now, is that a guarantee? No. It could still be garbage. But at the same time, we should still wait to give it a chance. Look at The Critical Drinker. When Prey was first announced, he was very skeptical of the movie, and made a ton of videos criticizing it. But then when it came out, Drinker realized that it was actually not bad, leading to him making a video admitting he was wrong, which in turn lead to his haters going "Ha! See! He walked back his criticism! He's dishonest!" My overall point is that, when it comes to the trailer, criticize it all you want, it friggin blows. But as for the movie itself, I think we should hold on to a little bit of optimism. It could pull through. And if not, we'll always have the Magical Negro sketch from Key and Peele.
Definitely. Though my main fear for the movie is that it won’t actually be racist. I think they are just using that to get eyeballs and it’s hiding a boring rom-com. But we shall find out in March!

You should be an advocate for colorblindness.
The notion of colorblindness is that people are treated equally with regards to their skin color. Similar to how we don't really care about hair color, even tho we can see what color someone's hair is. It is feasibly possible to get society to that point of colorblindness. We were well on our way there, until wokeness reignited race-consciousness.
The idea that "colorblindness" is the goal of literally being blind to skin color is a strawman and a lie by woke sophists who want to discredit colorblind ideals held by people like MLK.
Don't give credence to the fake definition of philosophical colorblindness that critical theorists have invented.
I see what you’re saying, but it really depends on the definition, and colorblind got poisoned by both sides. For some advocates, it meant ignoring all differences between skin colors, but that sometimes results in the larger population (white people) being Normal. It’s important to recognize cultural differences that often accompany skin color, but making it your entire personality is going too far in that direction.
I think of it like having a basic understanding of world religion. I have a general idea of when Ramadan is, so I won’t invite a Muslim friend to lunch or go on about my incredible meal in their presence. It doesn’t have to define their entire person, but it is a portion of them and its good to have some kind of understanding

When I first read the title, I thought this was gonna be a historical urban fantasy about a society of black people in the 1920s keeping magical things and creatures hidden from normal society and maybe they fight racism too. Granted I've never heard of this "trope" until just now. Comparing this premise to the fake premise I created in my head, I am severely disappointed.
This movie feels like a test to see how many rascist are really out there.
Idk I think we should have more offensive comedies. This could/should have been a send up of racial attitudes on both sides. A new Blazing Sadles or Chappelle's Show. There's plenty to satirize in todays media especially the culture war. I just wish they had the balls and brains to pull it off instead of this kid gloves treatment. Thinking white people walk around uncomfortable with black people to the point of bottled up rage is as ridiculous as thinking black people's concerns are just in their heads (overblown maybe, but not completely made up). The problem is no side knows what it's like to be the other yet EVERYONE is an expert on race relations. This is what the movie should've lampooned, not whatever this trailer promises.
I agree, the issue is that so many folks in hollywood don’t seem to get the difference between making a purposely offensive comedy and making a comedy where you don’t care who you offend. The latter is funny because it’s all about the jokes and nothing is off limits. The former gets you something like Lady Ballers where you are trying so hard to be edgy and offensive, but forget the comedy.
I really liked that Yellowjackets show for having a cast or mostly women, black and gay characters, they were original, interesting characters and story wasn't woke.
It also shows that monstrous behavior knows no gender.
I have to say... it is nice to see a copy of the gilded Hitchhikers in a Tubers backdrop. :D
I used to always feel like I had to be something else to please people and it just stressed me out and I was never able to show the real me so I recently decided I just don't care anymore. I'll do and say what I want and if people don't like that then that's just someone I don't wanna talk to. I've been much happier since I stopped worrying about what other people think of me and started just being me.
Your conclusion made me think of the movie "I, Robot" where Will Smith, the police detective who is a black man, doesn't harp on and on about being black. Even the leader of the police force is black! But does it matter to the plot? Not at all.
I love that movie and coincidentally I am not represented in that movie at all as a white man. Why is it so good? It has a good story and Will Smith plays the part well.
Again, it comes down to the story. Heck, one of my favorite fiction novels is written by a Japanese woman and it's set in Japan. It's amazing. Not because it's 'foreign' but because it's a good story.
