I just happened upon this by chance, and am 54, and recognize the faces as they come into the movie. I met William Shatter as a youngster, about this time at my Cousin's. He was the Chiropractor for the National Ballet in Toronto, and had a large home in Cabbagetown where he let a floor of the house to prima ballerina Karen Kain who was dating William Shattner, who is Canadian. He was a very nice man, as I recall, who had his start in Shakespearean theater here, and that is where he met Christopher Plumber, and they have done much work together in theater, (Stratford) and remain friends to this day. Otherwise, I recognized the actor from MASH, the one from Bonanza, the Tom Bosley from Happy Days, and the older man who played a detective (I forget the show's name). Thank you for mentioning there is a sequel, The Rebel. I hope I can find it. This is a part of history I am unfamiliar with. Thank you for the upload, Jill, and for the poster's comment.

@@murieltainter5936 That's really good how you got your ancestry done. That mix sure shows going back to that time. I remember this it was on Kcop tv in Los Angeles back in the 1970s. I remember my folk watched it. Brings back good memories of an age long since past.
Love the story line. This acting is definitely 70s. Can't think of the actress playing his mother. Never recall her playing a damsel in distress. The accents - Lord help us all. Watched the complete sequel in 2 days. Thanks for gracing us. Never too many historical dramas. Refreshing.
Patricia Neal is the mother. She's fantastic in "Hud", and a less well-known movie she did with Gary Cooper called "Bright Leaf" about tobacco tycoons at the turn of the 20th century. Not as highly praised as she should be these days because a stroke derailed her later career, and her romantic life often overshadowed her work.
Phillippe's mom was played by Patricia Neal. She was great in some steamy movies back in the day with Paul Newman and John Wayne. 100% of the accents were terrible Still love the movies.

Given its time and budget, it is very well done including Patricia Neal playing the grieved and dying mother which she did for several movies/shows. I remember this. The commercials started weeks before it aired. They counted down the weeks then days to the premiere. It was so well hyped that at the age of 12 I actually watched this. It wasn't what I normally watched back then. I was mainly Sci fi and action movies. I didn't have patience for dramas. Or so I thought. I enjoyed this film immensely. After this I included dramas and period pieces.
@@bluecollarlit Carson I like the way in which you said that. I tend to have the habit of looking at the scenery, and the details on clothes: and chuckling when a character returns in the same storyline but they diligently have something different ie: a female character only has 1 earring on whereas before she had 2.
I remember watching this as a kid when it first aired, and it's even more fun to watch it now as an adult because now I see actors I didn't notice before like John de Lancie.
Showing the corner of the boat they were filming the other boat from was bad, but the Monet painting from the impressionist period, before it existed in this movie is hilarious!
There were a number of great mini-series in the 1970s but the genre has largely been forgotten. Roots, Holocaust, Salem's Lot, Rich Man, Poor Man, From Here to Eternity etc. Even Dallas started out as a mini-series. And there were some very memorable performances by the likes of Meryl Streep, James Woods, Louis Gossett Jr., Natalie Wood, David Soul and William Devane, among others.
So glad I stumbled upon this, I read the series and it was an amazing read. This film is the first one of the series and so far I’m loving it, there’s quite a list of very well known great actors. Thanks for sharing!
I so happy to found this mini series in You Tube, I love this since kid all the sequels. I been waiting for they gives mini on TV again, but not been. Thanks for sharing 😊
Me too the last time i watched The Bastard was in 1979 when it was a mini series it was great. Andrew Stevens is so sexy in this movie and what a kisser just you wait and see him and Olivia Hussey together they are hot.
I was a high school student when this aired, but for some unknown reason, I didn't see it, or I don't remember viewing it. I do remember reading the books, however. I'm so glad I came across the miniseries now, at the age of 54, having studied much history in college and graduate school. I have an M.A. in history, emphasizing American and Native American history.
Kent Family Chronicles are an excellent mini series, have aged very well, with the best actors of the time. I remember these from when they first were broadcast
Thanks so much for posting these videos. I've been looking for them a long time. Read all the books back in the day and always hoped they'd do the whole series.
Indeed. There is hardly any AV material of any note that one cannot find on UA-cam thanks to peeps such as Jill C. (Unless, of course, it garners a copyright strike!)
Thanks for posting these three miniseries! I think I last saw them in the 1990s. I am a big fan of John Jakes and I've read many of his novels, including all eight volumes of the Kent Family Chronicles. I've loved American history ever since I can remember and today I'm a Civil War historian and I have a career in public history. While it's great to watch these programs again (I remember hoping in vain for them to do The Furies miniseries), I am really struck by how much these shows whitewashed the American past. I know Lucas is featured but a lot more than his character could have easily been included. Boston, Massachusetts in the 1770s was still a place of legal slavery; though the institution was rapidly dying out there in those years. But what happened to the Blacks in that place who were born there, brought there and lived there during the American Revolution? They were still all over New England. I don't know how many or how few there were but they are truly invisible in these programs. And they are also little seen in Caroline County, Virginia. That's just bad history (in the book The Rebels, a slave revolt takes place). And I know these programs were used in middle school or high school classrooms. I taped "The Rebels" years ago and before the program, a message said it had been endorsed by the National Education Association (and that is surprising considering all of the sex in these films) Enslaved people and free Blacks were in every one of the 13 colonies in 1775. They were involved in the printing trade as well as many other forms of skilled and unskilled labor. They were present as body servants to Congressional delegates in Philadelphia. They served as soldiers and sailors in the American Revolution and the War of 1812 (and some fought for the British). By writing them out of these programs, it's no wonder many people still to this day cannot see African-American history beyond a cotton field in the South.
Your folly is expecting to apprehend history from a medium that is, and always has been, engaged in the pageantry and goal of entertainment. It is a product of its times and its targeted audience. Like the human beings who formed it, a nation grows up and matures. People today tend to try to judge the past through today's hindsight and sensibilities. And then, they tend to want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. The United States of America is still the greatest nation ever birthed on Earth. It continues to evolve and rise from mistakes of the past, to be a beacon of hope to all who yearn for its liberties. Hold it accountable, but honor and stand for its principles and those who forged it with courage and vision.
I loved Jakes' books. His mixture of fiction and history made me a lover of history. He did not cover up the warts of history but made them part of the story.
Me too I liked this kind of movie! Wishing more movie to come ! The old movie is better to wach than e today's movie !thank you and God bless you all!❤❤❤

I watched this back in 1978... when it was shown in tv... it is a great pleasure to watch it again... thank you for uploading it...
1979 movie
An excellent movie. Would watch again.
As a middle-school kid back then, the heaving bosoms made this "must-see TV!"
There's a journey of imagination and feeling, finding artistic works we respond to.
I have never come across this until now, thanks for the upload
Showing the corner of the boat they were filming the other boat from was bad, but the Monet painting from the impressionist period, before it existed in this movie is hilarious!
Thank you Jill. Means a lot that you did this!!!
My pleasure!
Holocaust was must see TV.
also Captains and Kings
I hate that I can't get Captains & the Kings! one of my very favorites-& Testimony of Two Men Taylor Caldwell was the bomb
The Thornbirds
This was a fantastic movie back in the day. In the late 70's and 80's they did a great job with TV miniseries. Would love to see ROOTS again too!
This movie came out in 1979.
You can see Roots 2 on Tubi, which isn't my favorite. I can't find Roots 1 I mean the 70s one-not that newer one. Why did they even make a remake?
@@cynthianolder3557 Idk, I only know I HATE REMAKES & SEQUELS!!!!!!
You don't know how long i've waited to see this series Jill... ( I guess 38 years lol ) Many thanks for the post :)
Me too the last time i watched The Bastard was in 1979 when it was a mini series it was great. Andrew Stevens is so sexy in this movie and what a kisser just you wait and see him and Olivia Hussey together they are hot.
I saw this on tv on channel 13 in the day 13 did all the mini seris ..I was 12 yrs old
I was a high school student when this aired, but for some unknown reason, I didn't see it, or I don't remember viewing it. I do remember reading the books, however. I'm so glad I came across the miniseries now, at the age of 54, having studied much history in college and graduate school. I have an M.A. in history, emphasizing American and Native American history.
I had the whole series of books for many years. I hope this covers all of the books.
@@imapatching09 They only went up to the end of "The Seekers"
Okay
Lafayette is played by the kid from "Escape from Witch Mountain"? Cool! I ❤️1970s TV!
awesome. this was definitely must-see-TV at my house. My brother and I started saying "Char-bon-eau" every 10 minutes for weeks.
Thank you for uploading. Great miniseries
This came out before I was born but I love the 18th century. I really can't get enough. Townsends is an amazing 18th century living history channel.
Kent Family Chronicles are an excellent mini series, have aged very well, with the best actors of the time. I remember these from when they first were broadcast
Thanks so much for posting these videos. I've been looking for them a long time. Read all the books back in the day and always hoped they'd do the whole series.
I'm so glad you found them! Please enjoy!
Indeed. There is hardly any AV material of any note that one cannot find on UA-cam thanks to peeps such as Jill C. (Unless, of course, it garners a copyright strike!)
Jill Czarnyszewicz I certainly enjoyed them. I thank you also.
me too, thank you****
Am I the only one who sees history repeating itself right now?
No ! You are not ! I believe the same , especially these latest days !
In what way?
Could you please repeat that?
Philippe is a true hero; every times he gets beaten or wounded he gets lucky with women. He has motivation to become a brigand!!
lots of fun! great sets and costumes!
I watched the movie as a kid and so did not understand anything but now it makes sense. Years are gone when movies like this are made.
I taped "The Rebels" years ago and before the program, a message said it had been endorsed by the National Education Association (and that is surprising considering all of the sex in these films)
Enslaved people and free Blacks were in every one of the 13 colonies in 1775.
May I recommend The Great Controversy by Ellen White
❤Thank you. Thank you. Very well said. God bless you and all fair-minded historians.✝️🛐 What real good is 'history' that's no history at all?
又一個過度政治正確人士,僞君子!
I love the history of our earth from the political and religious perspective in The Great Controversy by Ellen White.
Hold it accountable, but honor and stand for its principles and those who forged it with courage and vision.
him "its a long walk to the village" her "WALK!???" IM LOVING THIS FILM SO MANY FAMOUS VINTAGE ACTORS
Love these type of movies. Happened a lot back in "those days"
I read the John Jakes novels years ago, still remember the name.
Thank you for the upload...
Thank you from Australia!
Thank-you wonderful video, well done. ❤️☘️☘️❤️👍👍
Enjoyed this very much, thanks for sharing...
I loved Jakes' books. His mixture of fiction and history made me a lover of history. He did not cover up the warts of history but made them part of the story.
Thank you, Jill. I remember seeing this in NYC in 1979 on channel 11, WPIX.
i loved it !!! thank you soooooo much !!!!!
Thank you for uploading...👋👋👋👏👏👏👏 OMG Don Johnson and Andrew Stevens, both were my crush 😍😍😍😍 😊😊😊💞💞💘💘
Don Johnson is in "The Rebels".
Me too I liked this kind of movie! Wishing more movie to come ! The old movie is better to wach than e today's movie !thank you and God bless you all!❤❤❤
what a wonderful series. ! so glad I found thuis.. they should do more off these on tv. !! on to the rebels part 2.
I remember the kid who plays Lafayette was in Escape to Witch Mountain. .....both of them.
Olivia Hussey is the best part of this whole movie. She is truly amazing.
In the 60s and 70s she was all that. Havent seen her in much lately.
"Arise fair sun and kill the envious moon, who is already sick and pale with grief that thou her maid, is far more fair than she". Olivia is Juliet.
Thanks for sharing! Searched for this video after noticing it was broadcast on Boston's UHF channel WLVI-TV56 on Sunday June 29, 1980 at 8pm!
