      LaForge won.
      CV did not show its strengths, but since this test reflects the conditions many people fly under, it's still relevant. And the marketing from CV suggests it should win even under these conditions, so there is definitely a disconnect somewhere.
      Pro58 did fine especially at like 1/3 the cost of LaForge.
      Sky03 did okay but didn't hold as well as LaForge, but if you're looking at Skyzone, you're picking it for something other than the pure RF sensitivity.

    Laforge killed it. Honestly i like clearview in a racing setting the most though. I tried true d, laforge and clearview for racing and clearview was just awesome in a crowd but laforge holds its own to. I raced with clearview in a hh gregg store and my video was perfect. So for me it seems like clearview is better for a racer and laforge is a better module for all around. The other 2 in the video annoyed the crap out of me with the flickering between antennas. Thats what sucked about the V1 true D it took to long to switch.

    Very interesting. I actually found it most useful to watch at 2x so it is real time. When I watched it at 1x the blackouts seems like they lasted forever. But at 2x they all seems reasonably flyable. Scary but flyable. I think it would be helpful to show the satellite shot you posted on Facebook showing the path and the fact that there is a building between where you are standing and flying. In this environment it certainly appears difficult to justify cost of the Clearview, but I appreciate you addressing that at the end. The flights I have seen in warehouses and offices has been impressive. I liked you using the screens. A tarp to cut the glare would be nice for next time. It was a little hard to watch the Laforge. I also liked that you had the Skyzones in there. I’m surprised you have those still and didn’t have to return them for the retooling. They seems to do as well as the modules, but a different times. They would be clear when the others were not and vise versa. And looking at how long I have rambled I wonder if there is a comment length limit.

    Looks to me that the Achilles was a constant 2nd in every test. The LaForge clearly showed less breakups and is the clear winner in the "Absolute". But for most people with limited budget, the Achilles destroyed them all in the Rssi per bang category, I did not expect it to fair this well.
    Also, it's not critical for the test, but the glare on the LaForge monitor made me look more often at the other screens just because it's more confortable for the eye.
    Thank you for the testing Joshua !

    Josh, you've done a wonderful job setting up this comparison study.
    For me, who is a noob & living off a disability pension & being a single parent, I buy whatever I can get away with. While some maybe looking for a clear winner, all I want is something that won't cost my 1st born & FPV (RC & quads in general) is an expensive hobby. I know I should have taken up reading instead but I like gadgets.
    For me, the winner is Achillies. Something so cheap yet almost as good as the best, is a consollation that I can live with. Maybe one day when my son starts cleaning chimneys I will elevate my spendings but for now, your video's help me avoid so many money pits that you get a 3 out of 3 "Big Fat Hugs"!!

  • @piman3072

    My understanding is the Clearview repairs the sync pulses, so you'll end up with a consistent image, even if the sync data has been distorted by noise. Everything else is just a toss up as to what parts of the signal arrive, and what parts of the frame are decipherable - you probably won't see a consistent difference between the other modules. Ira has been on record as saying you still get 70% of the benefit from a single antenna, and the sync pulse would be fairly easy to recover, a few old analog chips do it. I guess the remaining 30% would be some sort of averaging of the frame data.

    Good job! Would be really awesome if you could test how hard the modules hold on to their assigned channel by powering up other transmitters on different channels close by. I understand that might be a challenging one, and that certain assumptions and simplification must be made, but it would still be a very interesting test.

  • @manuelpellizzari8540
    @manuelpellizzari8540 6 років тому

    Even if the range performance of the clearview is not proportional to the price, I can see a great picture stability the others don't have. Sometimes during a signal loss, a frame will leave the screen upwards or sidewards, giving you the impression you are turning : that's the worse kind of interference (worse than a blackout of the same duration). Clearview doesn't have anything like this, the elements in the picture remain consistently positionned on the screen throughout interferences, the image just becomes blurry but stable instead of flickering all over.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  6 років тому

      I 100% agree. If you value this type of image stability then ClearView is worth the price to you.

    • @marky678

    That was a cool test, I think recording the screens is better than the DVR footage, especially when the static/lines are going crazy - DVR often has a hard time with that. Next time it might be good to cover the camera/screens so that the reflections on the screens aren’t so visible. Maybe a black sheet would do it. It would be nice to see how the clear view compares if you’re flying in a metal/concrete environment!

    Given what I've seen here and in my own experience the receiver maters but not as much as the antennas being used. Which is odd I see a good amount of people sinking money into receiver modules then using whatever random antenna they can find.

    Perhaps You should try and work out a test for bleed over from other channels as a lot of people fly together. if a receiver is better at range I bet its not as good as one that has a shorter range for bleed over.. maybe put another VTX some were you can fly by it and see what happens.

    I'd say of the four Clearview actually has the lowest raw Rx sensitivity and Achilles the highest.
    The others all show a better picture when they're good, and worse when they're bad, while the Clearview is simply more consistent, because it never loses VSYNC (it generates its own). I've seen Clearview do incredible things before in a race environment, so I don't know if it just handles multipathing and other nearby channel interference that much better, or whether the other diversity solutions are just all catching up.

    Hi, firstly, thanks for all your videos and the hard work you put in. Secondly, your decision to leave it up to the viewer to decide.. just an utterly spot on decision. Kudos for that. And to the point... I am a cheap ass. And I happen to be in no position to spend hundreds on gear to feed my fpv addiction regardless, but let's just say, I'm a very frugal kinda guy. I have a set of fatshark predator v2s, they as you may be aware, are not modular. However, being a frugal nerd, I established that the module inside my pv2's has the same pinout as other modules. And took the plunge and bought the pro58 and Achilles fw, some serious desoldering to remove my module and insert some female headers, cut a hole in my casing to insert the module. And blow me down if I didn't nail it big time with that mod. This was quite a game changer. My video is just...its beautiful I can't lie. Would I recommend cutting a hole in your fatshark predator v2s....yes. but this is no amateur hour operation kids. So don't blame me if you balls it up and your mummy has to buy you a new set of fpv goggles. Ok. But I digress. The pro58 module should not be underestimated by any means. I fly quads yes, but I have developed a serious love for wings, I make my own from scratch (yes frugality at its best) but I have only been disappointed by ready made super expensive wings. My wing is....quite simply the balls and it cost....like 30bucks and that was vtx, ESC, PCB, cam, rx, servos. Yknow...that required elements. Thanks to my super bad ass pro58 (and Achilles is a must I cannot emphasize that enough) a pagoda2 on tx and rx. And a cheap patch. I fly miles. Clear as day video. So if your broke, cheap, or just not sure.... Pro58...blue pill.... Achilles....2x pagoda2's and a patch.....this is your eBay shopping list. And read the god damnit instructions. Please see my videos for proof of pudding. I have not the cash for a GoPro. Almost all my footage is DVR. All my videos as of September 2017 are with the pro58. Thanks. And goodbye.

    I do need you to interpret the results due to the shine and shadow on the right hand side screens (i.e. the ones I was interested in).
    TBH I've rarely maybe never been disappointed with your content JB, but this time I am a bit disappointed - especially when I think this would be considered by many to be quite an important test.
    It would be really interesting to see the test with the Clearview and the Laforge on the left hand side (i.e. with less reflection and shadow). I assume at 9:44 the clearview had an image but I could not see it - could see that the others did not seem to have a signal.

    great as always. answered my question on whether to invest in laforge or drop the 300 on clearview. laforge it is. i just didnt see enough of a wow factor in the clearview as they advertise. although i did notice it to be a bit easier to see at times when others were flickering or rolling a bit, and the clearview kind of kept a dark shadow outline of the environment (still scary but flyable). just not 300 dollars better. I guess ill use the unspent money on a nice new backback to tote around my quads haha. Thanks JB!

    is it the compression on youtube that is adding all the pixellated blocks to the screens? really makes it hard to tell what kind of quality the clearview has when it gets bad.. the whole thing with the clearview is that it's supposed to give you usable video even when it's bad, but the pixellation makes it hard to tell just how good/bad it is. any chance we can get a download of the uncompressed video to watch off youtube?

    Judging on this testing alone, and buying for purpose of reception only, the Fat Shark and SkyZone are my choices. On a budget the Eachine would be decent, but why would I buy a good pair of goggles (Fat Shark) and go cheap on the module? I know people do it all the time, many times you'll see someone buy a brand new expensive deer rifle and put the cheapest scope possible on.
    I will need to see other tests before I could be convinced to pay for ClearView.

    Whenever I've used a clearview ground station the static has always been crazy scrolling white lines not the fuzzy fade out like your module. Not always the same ground station

    Laforge still seems to hold up and be the best for the Money hands down.. question I have the later version that doesn’t have the usb is it held back in performance to the last east 4.0? This input would really help me on buying the latest one ???

    Thanks for running this test but I wish you ran a test with 2 patches on the clearview. Thats how i run mine and I get better signal behind objects than i ever did with my TrueD. The clearview is always "mixing" the two antennas, where as diversity can select the better option but clearview will always mix - even if the other antenna is crappy signal. So in your test when the clearview has the omnis, then the others have advantage of selecting the crosshair. (for this first test i feel the other rx units should have had 2 omnis as well) When you run crosshair and omni on the clearview it is mixing those signals while the diversity receivers are able to select one antenna at a time. Put 2 crosshairs on the clearview is where you will see the difference.

      In a word "no" your wrong each receiver should be setup in the best possible way for that receiver module.
      I find it hard to believe that people will fly the clearview with two patches unless they are strictly going to stick to a certain area and now move whilst they fly.
      For common every day flying you need at least 1 omnidirectional antenna.

    • @stewalcock8022
      @stewalcock8022 6 років тому

      exactly - So if the other receivers have a crosshair on them then the clearview should have a test with 2 of them, this would be the "best possible way for that receiver module". And im sorry but I disagree that you always need an omnidirectional antenna for common every day flying, maybe for your flying though. I fly with 2 Xair2 patches on my clearview goggle module.

      @JoshuaBardwell  6 років тому

      Stew isn't wrong that there are often cases where 2x patch will work. If you think of many, many flying scenarios, you have a flight line, and then you fly in front of yourself. For these scenarios a 2x patch on the ClearView is great. As long as your patch has a reasonably wide beam, you'll stay in it.

    Really cool test. I was quite impressed with the performance of the Pro58. Solid budget choice? It looked to me like LaForge held on to a "good" signal the longest. Had I bought a Clearview module while expecting a LaForge picture, I would've been disappointed. Different tool with a different purpose. AlwaysOKView?

    I think the problem I have with the clearview beyond the price. If you are looking at just pure video quality, While "clear" it is pixelated. I understand this is a necessity for this to do what it does, But if you are flying for the immersion of flying .. well. anything else will be better for that.

  • @longrangefpv

    Like you said, do the same test inside a metal parking garage flying with 6 pilots together... let's see who is going to best the best receiver... if you always fly alone and outside at 200 or 600 mW, the clearview is overkill but if you like flying together with friends or in competition, the Clearview is the way to go... hope the Immersion new module will be of the same quality as the Clearview at 1/2 the price
    Good test JB!

    Why does everybody call a directional antenna a patch antenna? patch is a specific type of antenna, whereas other directional antennas such as the x-hair/crosshair and their variants, helicals, patch, etc. Im noticing it more even though patch antennas are being less used compared to other antennas.

    It's strance how clearview has less blackouts but overall the image qualit is worse... it's like an averaged down image quality. I'm not sure it's much better than a few quick blackouts (they are indeed very scary when you're flying, but having such a grayed-out image would not be pleasant either)

    Would have been interesting to see Clearview with a pair of matching patch antenna's so that the 'magic' algorithm kicked in I would have thought...
    Was there not enough patches to go around or was there another reason???
    Not likely to buy one of the 5.8 F/S-type modules any time soon, but I have been considering the Clearview 1.3 reciever for use on long-range wing...

    I agree the Achilles definitely at times was at or better then the others. Would 2 patches not be a fair comparison on the clearview vs the others in patch direction? I mean in that test I doubt the non-clearviews ever came out of the patch side other then the first few meters of the test.
    Thanks again for the info you provide us.

    • @JoshuaBardwell

    I'd like to know what your distances are that you were flying. I have the Eachine Pro58 with Achilles Firmware v1.6 and my signal is a lot stronger than what it appears on the video. Antennas are VAS Crosshair and a generic pagoda. I've even accidentally had my vtx on 25mW and barely had breakups.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  6 років тому

      Distance is about 300 to 400 meters but there are obstructions and the ground isn't flat. So you can't really judge very well.

    • @JoshuaBardwell
      @JoshuaBardwell  6 років тому +2

      In the 2nd half of the video, they had identical antennas.
      Iftron recommends using ClearView with two identical antennas for the "magic algorithm" to do its thing. So the 1st half of the test is reflecting their recommended setup. The second half of the test is reflecting the concern you are expressing.
