One day, 14-year-old Yusuke Urameshi suddenly finds himself dead, having died pushing a child out of the way of oncoming traffic. Since he has such a bad personality, even the Spirit World was caught by surprise that he would sacrifice himself. Yusuke soon finds out he wasn't supposed to die and has a chance for resurrection and bringing his body back to life. After being resurrected, Yusuke becomes a Spirit Detective, along with his comrades, and one adventure after another happens, whether it be an investigation or a fighting tournament.

Both were animated great to be honest.
Certain shows do something so well that, in itself, it basically becomes the blueprint for “how to do this right” for everything else that comes thereafter.
The Dark Tournament is to tournament sagas what Zuko later became for redemption arcs.
Yu Yu Hakusho was and still is my favorite anime of all time I just love everything about the series, the animation is cool, the characters feel real, and the story is awesome for how the characters are portrayed with great action and emotional moments that was such a joy to watch. I cannot recommend it enough it just so damn fun and good show all around. 10/10 😎

During the last 20-15 episodes of the Dark Tournament I was like, “why does the animation look so much better now?” It’s seriously noticeable and everything looks so much smoother, especially the character’s movements.

Literally just watched that a couple hours ago. Second time watching the whole series from beginning to end. First time was back in 2011. Remember watching it here and there as a kid. Great anime!
Chapter Black is my favorite arc. I thought it had some of the best fight scenes of the whole series.

Yu Yu Hakusho has yet to be topped imo. And I am caught up on One Piece and have finished HxH (masterpieces in their own right). There is something insanely special about the characters in this show.

hiei vs bui is my favourite fight in this anime, i remember watching this in 4th grade, evening before sleep, it was fucking breathtaking, still rewatch it to this day.
I actually, really, legit love this episode's artstyle. It's just so different and surprising and just plain GOOD. I mean YYH has godlike animation but this was just *chefkiss*

It’s ridiculous how influential YYH actually is. Iconic beyond measure.
Watched the whole show in summer of 2017 I was going into my freshman year of college broke as hell but this show made my life easier at the time
One of the angriest times I've ever experienced was when they took this off the air in the final season and I had to scour video stores for the last of the episodes. This was before the on demand availability of the internet.

Yu yu hakusho is my absolute love and what is crazy is that almost every voice actor for the english dub of yu yu hakusho is in the dub of fruits basket. Even the narrator of yu yu hakusho. It's crazy. Kurama is best boy btw
there are other episodes in the show where the animator takes full control like this one, moments that come to mind are the episode where Toguro is in spirit world and that one part where Kuwabara uses his spirit sword in the forest when trying to save Yukina. There are couple more that I am sure I am missing, but this is not the only scene like this.
Yu Yu Hakusho is still one of my favorite anime’s in the Goddamn WORLD.

This was a really great video. I thought i was the only one that greatly enjoyed this fight. whenever people talk about the dark tournament, it's always the yusuke fights, but i think hiei's growth with the darkness flame in every fight was always phenomenal and every most times hiei stole the show with his fights, including the demon world tournament vs mukuro. bui was also one of my favorite antagonists in the series, just by his introduction. his concept of overwhelming power yet still being tamed by teguro was so amazingly well done. loved it.
Thank you so much for of all episodes choosing this one. It's probobly one of my favorites, if not my favorite episode for the animation and storytelling. The style was odd but it was experimental for the time, and that in itself is revolutionary.
I've grown up much since watching this episode for the first time. But now as an animator I'm glad to see people taking notice of the small intricacies of this episode in general.

This has always been such an underrated show. Glad to see more people make videos about it lately. I loved this show growing up in middle school and now it's progressed to being my 2nd favorite anime.
Hiei is a character that gets portrayed as a villain on numerous occasions in the show. I felt bad for Bui becusee he wasn't really a villain. He was forced to fight in the tournament as a result of being Toguros slave. All he was fighting for was to be strong enough to beat Toguro and win back his freedom. When he lost to Hiei a person he knows is much weaker than Toguro he gave up. Hiei humbled Bui and made him realize that HE WILL NEVER POSESS THE STRENGTH TO BEAT TOGURO becuse Toguro is always getting stronger and Bui is always playing catch up.
I wouldnt say that togoro has been the same for 50 years he wished to be that strong than stagnated.Bui was catching up and was a close match for hiei who was on togoros level at this point
@@matt-tq8bd toguro didn't wish to be that strong. He was already that strong and consistently finds ways to increase his power. What he wished for was for a more powerful and practical body. A body that wasn't limited by human conditions and does not age and can heal quickly. This way he can train and get stronger and not have to worry about losing his strength due to aging.

I don't think Hiei is that much weaker than Toguro, at least once he has the Dragon of the Darkness Flame down pat.

This was a great looking episode with the fighting related effects - but there is no way the changes in character appearance are the director trying to show how powerful the fight is. They only had a week to make it and had to cut corners, because of magnitude of the fight.
Exciting battle for sure, though.

This is my all time favorite series, maybe not the “best” but it’s my personal favorite and I always loved seeing well thought out videos about it. Great job!

This fight was a dynamic concept to showcase to us the audience to realize that the intensity of this fight was something you will never see anywhere else during this era of ANIME especially form dragon Ball z.
You can tell form Hiei's expression he was in an atmosphere of power that was so devastating that the artist was attempting to make it feel so real in the mind of us watching this to feel like we were in that arena as one of the audience and our lives could be at risk at this given chance with what Hiei had done to have connection to this dark power from another realm. And then to relinquish it so dangerously in this one place at this one time where everything could be lost forever. The art overall remind me of what they did in the DBS BROLY movie. I feel like during the GOGETA vs BROLY fight those artist were trying to mimic the symbolism that was done in this fight between BUI and Hiei during this moment to match that level of intensity. The problem was the audience in DBS is not enough. But in Hiei the audience watching gave us that sign to cue into that feeling of devastation and chaos that invoked us all to feel that level of anxiety. I can attest that during the CELL SAGA of the fight between GOKU and GOHAN vs CELL those moments felt like YU YU HAKUSHO. It was pure anxiety we could feel that level of uncertainty. And that is why DBS will never match that concept. And why YU YU HAKUSHO had this level of HIGH from the GET GO. No one can ever un-see these moments from the Dark Tournament and nothing can ever mimic this level of symbolism ever again. We the audience of today and the future will always remember this level of art and how powerful it rocked us in the feels all this time ago.
I'm down for the year of classics. Couldn't have picked a better show to kick things off :^)

Lelouch Hatake He never has ass pulls or ridiculous plot armor he gets fucked up and beaten to hell before he wins in a last ditch effort or dying trying literally against Sensui in there big fight for Kuwabara.
I love these kinds of retrospectives. Whenever me and my homies are discussing or rewatching our favorite anime fights, I always take us to Hiei vs Bui. I love this fight and the stylizations chosen whenever he’s using Kokuryuha.

I'm always torn when I watch this episode. I don't care for the overly exaggerated facial expressions and movements, but at the same time I love the kinetic energy and dark, bold shading choices that really sell you that something big and game changing is happening.

One of those series I constantly find myself rewatching time and time again.
I just finish Yu Yu Hakasuo yesterday and I loved the whole damn show I’m really going to miss it, and I really wanna see it come back I’d love if it did. Also I definitely got hooked when Hiei busted out his his dragon of the darkness flame for the first time, but I did really really enjoyed the sensui arc and definitely when they where fighting him with his sacred energy you really felt how overwhelming he was. Also Yu Yu Hakasuo being confusing hah watch Evangelion but I love the animation all old anime is time less, and screw anyone who says it’s bad let’s see them try to create a anime episode I bet they wouldn’t beable to.
Josh Shrum Did you see the two new OVA animations, “All or Nothing” and “Two Shots”? They are adaptations of two of the manga chapters that never made it into the original anime, and FUNimation is working on dubs for them at this time. I would also recommend watching Eizou Hakusho. If you enjoy the dub, I may even recommend watching FUNimation’s dub of the first Yu Yu Hakusho movie, the Golden Seal, if only to hear how great it was to see the cast back in action, heheh.

@@deshaunfortune912 YYH and Hunter X Hunter are timeless. I have seen YYH like 6x and have read it 2x. Very few manags can be good every time. One Piece and Berserk mite be the only others I can say are good every read/watch.

Shinbo's work on episode 66 (the Dark Tournament conclusion) is one of the most striking episodes I've ever seen. I still vividly remember watching it the Saturday night when it aired.

This isn't even the only episode or series of scenes that does this in YYH. One of my FAVORITE aspects of the anime is that while there is a general art and animation style the staff was clearly never pigeon holed into never being creative with the project at all. When they do get creative it is always noticeable but in a good way and generally has produced some of the best animation in the series. Another noticeable moment of this is when Yusuke fights Doctor in the Chapter Black Arc.

Well I had second thoughts on this scene and Yusuke vs doctor on 2nd season wich was also made by him.
I saw it when I was a kid and yes I loved it but it totally felt weird.
With the time I started to watch more animation of all types and eventuallt studied animation and then watched it again.
By then I was capable to know and recognize whe a character design is used, when the animation is keyframed when is not and all this made me realize who amazingly great this scene is, how much artistical freedom reigns in the whole secuence.
I could call it animation for animators, a perspective much closer to Redline or Kill la Kill than a standard tv shonen production.
A little technical tresaure hidden on a clasical tv series.

I could bet any amount of money that if the show only redid the animation for this genre with the exact same sound clips, it would take the world by storm. Not only does this show have more to offer a fight than a 2-3 big hit "combo"/"special" but there actually moments where you see our guys winning a fight and pause in cold sweats because they sense the enemy's intent. I wish this show would resurface just to get some respect

Yeah, I watched this fight when I was a kid, 10 years or so, and, judging from the most honest, inocent, and pure point of view (that of a child) this battle was incredible. Even though and never intended to racionalize it at the time, it was clear that the animation was different, dynamic, fluid... a master piece of art.
I watched this November 2019, Really loved the show, Chuck Huber voiced Hiei good and Laura Baily voiced Kekio good. I loved the dub it wouldnt have the same effect seeing it the first time in Manga or sub
