At my local authority, before i was made redundant, we were a team of 2. We had 4 managers, ALL on 40-60k. 4 managers for 2 people. THATS the issue with councils..
The trouble was the properties sold were not replaced. Well over a million homes were sold and they were the best ones mostly houses and ground floor maisonettes and flats in the best blocks in the best areas.
They are. They’ve simplified the planning to do that and have converted 21000 to homes so far with about 10000 in the pipeline now which will ramp up more going forward. Trouble is they’re all apartments and we don’t need more of them or at least that’s what I see around me. I’m on the outskirts of West London and all they keep building is 1000’s of flats everywhere. London including the residential outskirts has about 3.7 million homes and nearly 2 million of them are already apartments with many more planned. To be honest though there’s only 28k offices empty here as well and by the time you remove the dilapidated or non residentially suitable in that figure it’s much less.

It cost a lot of money to maintain council housing. If councils keep council housing, either rent has to be increased or taxes needeed to be increased to pay for it. I think maintenance cost is the real reason for selling social housing.

That was the problem 40 years ago. They all needed upgrading. New kitchens, bathrooms, heating and windows and doors. Councils did not have the money. That is why they were sold off. Get rid of the laibility at a time we were coming out of the 70's when the government was loaded up to the eyeballs with labours debt and the IMF bailout.
The big problem with right to buy was that it was badly managed from the start. No business man would simply have sold off a lot of their assets without reinvesting.

Councilors should have a set salary, equivalent to management in the private sector. Councils should not spend on frivolities or their own 'pet' projects that don't serve the community as a whole. Councils should only employ staff where absolutely necessary(to many 'jobs' have 3 people employed where 1 or 2 would suffice). Councils should be audited publicly every year with every penny earnt/spent accounted for(that would quickly show where money was wasted and where it could be better used). The biggest problem with Councils is that they spend money that isn't theirs!
My grandad has been a resident in his house since around 1972! He was denied the option to buy his house by the Council when he had the money, now he doesn't have the money he has the option. I need to get £50k in order to "Gift" him the money to buy his house, then I can build myself a DJ Studio etc in the garden to learn more about DJ'ing in my time outside of my caring for him and working a full time job. This is a typical policy from someone who doesn't have to worry about money or having a roof over head, typical out of touch MP!

Councils were given the money from the sales of their hosuing stock but not allowed to use it to build more homes. Which is rather a good idea, as the newly built homes would be eligible for sale under right to buy after a few years, no? And don't forget, when the houses were sold the all costs to the council for maintenance went too (when I was a kid the council used to decorate council houses, cut the hedges, replace roofs, windows etc. etc). The Town and Country planning act 1947 is the reason land is expensive and not enough homes have been built. Plus allowing millions of extra people into an already crowded country is mad (crowded in the areas where people want to live that is). The south east is full.

Not in the days when the houses went up for sale. On my estate in Essex the majority worked and bought their houses. Some of the original right to buyers are still alive and living in their homes.

I didn't realise that the money from the sale was deposited in Icelandic bank accounts that offered higher interest. When the banks in Iceland crashed councils lost their money. Thatcher forbade councils the right to use sale money to build new social housing. A great opportunity lost. One other point, council houses were built to a high standard, council planning offices keeping a close eye on the build. I don't think they care much these days.

We have got a very high homless people in the UK. I'm one of them. For me to live in a social housing is very slim. So I would stop buying social housing at this point x
My understanding of the right to buy scheme, which is a very good scheme, was that when anybody did purchase their property the money they paid usually via a mortgage went straight to Central government. So no cash available for local councils to build more replacement housing stock.

We have got a very high homless people in the UK. I'm one of them. For me to live in a social housing is very slim. So I would stop buying social housing at this point x

My understanding of the right to buy scheme, which is a very good scheme, was that when
anybody did purchase their property the money they paid usually via a mortgage went straight to Central government. So no cash available for local councils to build more replacement housing stock.
I agree with right to buy but not a a big discount, its because the renter has had years of repairs done by the council and if they were renting privately they would not get a discount
