Highs and Lows of Ocean Sailing - Transatlantic on a Catamaran Part 2

  • Our 3,000-mile transatlantic crossing continues aboard the Bluewater 50 catamaran, “Zao”. In Part 2, we set up the spinnaker off the Cabo Verde Islands to begin a downwind run to the Caribbean, climb the mast underway to do repairs, go for a swim mid-Atlantic and celebrate Thanksgiving at sea. This is our 8th crossing but the first one that we’ve ever done on a multi-hull and the first transatlantic passage ever for our crew of sailing bloggers and videographers. Follow this series to see what crossing an ocean aboard a catamaran is really like.

I had always dreamed of a ride across the US. Never thought of boating across the Atlantic. Now I couldn't do either one. Now I watch other people RV and Boat............. It's just how things turn out.

enjoyed watching you all so leisurely spending your time on a cat. Just another tip of flying a Mavic Pro with a moving base, switch off all object avoidance sensors. otherwise it'll just jerk back and forth up and down when the boat moves. Have fun. God bless.

When you bring the drone on board I suggest you bring it with back, so you have the left-right controls not reversed and it is easier to controle and after you catch it in your hand if it doesn't stop, grab it well and turn it up side down and it stop immediately, it is not a recommended maneuver because it creates effort in the engines but it's safe.

Very cool. I really liked the swimming portion, you guys were having some real fun there. It reminded me of a swim call we had off Bahama when I was serving on a submarine. I used some weights to sink down 20-30 meters and let go of the weights. I was deep enough I could see the entire ship -- I'll never forget that day. This passage video is making it easy to convince my wife to get into cruising! Cheers.

It just looked so effortless aboard that Cat. Great editing in this one! We're planning several cruises to the northern Channel Islands and to Baja, then across the Pacific in about 1.5 years.

Living on board a monohull 50 ft for 10 years, currently in Asia, planning to go around the world in the future but consider a catamaran for that. following distance shores as well as cruising off duty. Very interested in sailing. These videos give a good impression but difficult to catch the real pleasure of breathing the salty air. Keep up the good work!!

A little tip on stoping the MavicPro props when hand catching, just grab it then quickly turn it up side down, this will shut motors off. Much safer then sticking fingers near those spinning props.

Too true! We were VERY careful especially overnight and kept a close watch for squalls when the spinnaker was up. I had us all practice dousing the sail as well. We had 2 on watch at a time and a plan to call 2 others if squalls loomed.

    Sheryl and Paul and Team,
LOVELY trans Atlantic videos on the Bluewater-50. You all have been blessed with wonderful weather (alas a bit more wind might have helped) and this has added to the tranquility of the crossing and the resulting two videos.
Thank you for the "user tour" of the boat. So how do you like the in-mast mainsail furling? One person can reef this and NO stack-pack to ever deal with!
I look forward to the next (and last) of these transit videos. i also look forward to your assessment of the transit on a catamaran. Now back to your brand new mono-hull at the Düsseldorf Boat Show!

Great episode! I had been following your progress and was wondering why the crossing was taking you so long. Looks like light winds all the way. What a beautiful and comfortable boat. I just retired at the end of 2017 and plan to do more sailing in the future. We head to Grenada on January 18th for 8 days on a Bali 40 cat. I am a life long sailor and have chartered in the Caribbean many times over the last 25 years. I have not had a lot of passage making experience and would love to do a Pacific or Atlantic crossing. I have a small UA-cam Channel and record my sailing trips. We were in St Martin in March of 2017 before they got hammered by Irma. If you ever need crew for another crossing I would be available. Thanks for all the great videos, they help me get through the long cold winters here in South Dakota.

I saw no Lows! I was on a 50 footer monohull about 40 yrs ago. She had much higher stern dinghy davits than you have. At night (as always when it hits the fan) a wave came up under the dinghy and ripped the dinghy and davits right off the boat. It was all ruined and pounding into the boat, held on by a line which I had to quickly cut. Of course we had a spare dinghy on deck. From that day forth I would never hang a dinghy off my stern UNLESS the stern of the boat stuck out further than the dinghy. Swing the dinghy a bit inboard if need be but you do not want a chain of events at night in 20 foot seas etc... and the loss of any dinghy... I also always had at least 3 dinghies even on 30 ft sailboats (inflatable and 2 kayaks). If we had to abandon ship we could put extra food and gear etc in the kayaks and even use them as pontoons etc... IF the inflatable was torn then we would have the (hard is best) kayaks as backups. ALWAYS have 3 of anything your life depends on and ALWAYS have a sail kit on your dinghy/s and compass etc. You can save yourself if you need to.

I think the Gulf Stream is also a good place to test your skills before tackling an ocean crossing. I still can't decide if the next boat will be a cat or mono. Mono feels somehow closer to the elements and I'd rattert be in a mono in severe weather, but speed, comfort etc. is much better in a (performance) cat. Also the fam loves catamarans...

    Morning
Not sure if someone has mentioned this somewhere else along the time line of this video or some of your other videos
The DJi drones, including the mavic pro in this video, once you have cought it
Tilt it 90° to any side
That tilts the drone and the propellers switch off. Doing away with the need to get fingers so close to those propellers
    Those props cut
    Hope this helps

3:19 The "escape" hatch is required by CE regulations. It's not for getting out of the boat, but to get back in if the boat capsizes. Multihulls are very stable and safe, including when upside down, and an inverted hull is a safe place to stay while awaiting rescue.
Catamarans are generally safer and more stable than monohulls, and trimarans are generally safer and more stable than catamarans.
When catamarans were new in Western culture several decades ago, there was a false perception that that they were less safe and more likely to capsize than monohulls. This is a perceptual bias (survivorship bias) since most monohulls go straight to the bottom when capsized, while mutithulls float on the surface. The capsized monohulls were invisible and the capsized multihulls were visible.

I am interested in why folks do not fish those grasses. Tripletail fish love hanging around those clumps and many other fish. That is the time to have a smaller rod and reel combo, like a bass rod and reel to throw out lures that attract those fish.

We are living onboard our Jeanneau 45.2 in the Mediterranean, currently wintering in Tel-Aviv, Israel. However we are thinking of selling our boat and buying either an Amel Mango, or a Vagabond 52 to start a circumnavigation in 2019.
Like to watch you passage videos, great work.
