Makes me wonder why ancients wanted to ascend so much. Was it because of endless suffering from reincarnation? I don't think so, they were pretty advanced civilization, just look at iterators. Maybe religious? Probably, but that's stupid reason to abandon world they build, and all creatures they left, including iterators. Kinda egoistic, for someone who believed in karma and all that stuff.
@@jcdenton6427 yeah, that was the whole thing with the ancients. they were purposely portrayed as selfish and egotistical beings only concerned with themselves
@@fruit314 makes some sense. But were all of them like this? Everyone believed in karma and ascension? Would be cool to, at least, read a pearl about group of ancients that refused to ascend, so now they lost somewhere, still living and reincarnating.
@@jcdenton6427 that would be really cool. I almost expected something like that in Downpour, and I hope they do something like that in the future
This song is so sad man... This echo was basically forced to ascend during the final mass ascencion of the remaining ancients, unlike the other echoes who tried to ascend of their own will but were trapped by their egos, this one was perfectly content to go on living in this world. One of the only ancients to actually be happy with just... living. Not searching for enlightenment or some higher purpose, just appreciating the beauty of this moment, right here. And despite that, they were forced to ascend, just like everyone else.
Their attachments are why their ascensions actually failed, but this one's enjoying its stay.
i wonder how they 'forced' them and other ancient populus to ascend.

Probably my favorite track in Rain World. Has this melancholy feel to it, like it's a funeral march for the Ancients.
That's an amazing coincidence that you thought of that because while I was developing my custom area (after your comment) I tried to implement an Echo into it, but it didn't quite work out and then later while I was trying to decide on the theme to use in a special area of the level I realised that I could use Past Echoes as it was to me like there was an Echo there before but had sadly disappeared. Luckily Past Echoes was already on the top list of songs to use as it fit the area quite well so it doesn't take away from the ambience of the place. Anyway, development ramble over. I just thought that it was a cool coincidence that you had commented this as Echoes and Ancients are two themes that are in a way related to one another.

@@MK-Yogurt Funny you should say that, in Downpour (spoilers) Rhinestones Beneath Shattered Glass didn't want to ascend because they were already satisfied with the life they were given, and was sent back as an echo in Undergrowth.
I know this is an ancient comment, but it's fitting that I find solace in a comment seemingly dead and buried, yet with life no older than two weeks ago. My favorite track is the one immediately after this in my mind, Theme V Reclaiming Entropy, which sounds like the funeral bells immediately after this march.
I can't overstate how refreshing meeting this echo associated to this track was. it's like... Finally! Somebody who fucking gets it!

If you asked me what song would best describe Rain World, it's this. Quiet, somber, alien, unique.

The Song is now used by one of the Echoes in the Saint's campaign in Downpour.
i think its nice, that at least some of the ancients finally realised that maybe the thing they searched all their lives were wasn't quite as they'd hoped, but instead that the true beauty was right there all along
this song is now used in Saint’s campaign, for the Undergrowth echo! I had trouble reaching it, so I could listen to this for longer than the other echo themes. quite possibly my favorite echo theme, and my favorite echo

There’s something special about learning about spectacular ancient beings that once roamed the past… and all that’s left
This plays in Aerial Tramway, from the Aether Ridge mod!
Some possibly cut content was found of a thing called "distant ghost" that looked like a black ghostly sperm with a black glow around its head, which was apparently meant to be used in the city background. Imagine this song playing and seeing hundreds and hundreds of these ghosts everywhere. That would be so melancholic and amazing, though it seems they were aiming for a more mysterious feel than a sad and melancholy one.
Late note: I no longer believe this song would have gone with that setting, but rather the song called "Upperwall" instead.
That is really interesting. Do you have a place we can read up more on it?
Unfortunately, not much is known about the unused ghost model, as it's mostly just speculated what it could have been. We've had some discussions about it on the RW discord.
I think they were an older concept for the echoes. Hundreds of thousands of the Ancients must've lived in that city atop Five Pebbles. It would make sense to see so many of the black ghosts in the city area if they are semi-transcended Ancients.

Despite being the song of an echo in Downpour, this will always be the Aether Ridge song to me. The notes mournfully echoing over the windy, snowstruck ruins of the Aerial Tramway.

Always loved this track. I knew it was familiar when I found that echo in Undergrowth, can't believe I forgot about it. But at the same time, that made the experience of listening to that echo all the more special.
If you listen closely you can realize that it uses the same chords as the ost, pictures of the past and therefore also uses the same chords as the ost random gods.
I related it against one of the greatest pains, loneliness, Pictures of the Past refers to how Slugcat was left alone, Random Gods refers to how Five Pebbles wanted to isolate himself from everyone, therefore staying alone, and this Echo was one of the few ancients who wanted to live, therefore he also remained alone.
I heard about das really liking this one as his most fav, and while I don't have it as my own fav, I can see why he does like it
It's a haunting sort of sound, something that feels almost uncomfortable in a way, which is probably the intent. Unrest fits well for an echo's fate.
For me, I really have fallen in love with The Cycle, something about it gives off a despair feeling inside, which is an instant hook for me with ambient music as such. Funny to think it's essentially just the reverse of a song already made.
