honestly such a shame. i felt a little weary when i heard modus was going to be the publisher, but i had some hope that it was for the best. im so sad they betrayed our community
So what i'm taking from this and previous events regarding small dev teams is, don't make a deal of ownership with a publisher, they will ask for the impossible and will fuck up the team and the project.
It like we see this pattern happen time and time again and they still think it won't be done by them by this publisher. Never sold full ownership of your creation to the publisher, regardless if the benefit from it seem good short term.
Im really hurt to see this game is dying. I was wanting to see how the storyline played out, and see more new characters. It was a really fun game while it lasted.
Lauren Faust came here to save the fan-game only to be ended by a publisher. What an hard world to live in. I hope there will be a book on the finished story. Didn't Lauren wrote the Book of Lore? Wished they focused on Story mode. Backers were waiting for it.
I do hope at some point Mane6 can try and pull off something that Videocult (Rain World devs) has done. Try to fight for the legal rights to TFH. That or sue. Anything can be fixed with a good lawyer.
Plus, and I'm not sure how this works, but Maximum owns TFH now, not Mane6. It's kind of like how Hal Laboratory made Kirby, but they don't own it, Nintendo does.
I remember playing the demo for Fighting is Magic so much way back, and being excited for this one for ages, but I never ended up playing it. A shame what’s happening here though, it’s like killing it twice.
They don't even deserve this in my opinion! They don't deserve to get away with what they did! They don't deserve our money! And neither do Activision, EA, or ANY GREEDY PUBLISHERS!!
This makes me sad. I admire passion and creativity, especially for things I love, and when I recently discovered that this existed, I was down for it. But hearing a tragic act of greed hurting creativity once again fills me with disappointment to those who did this to a game that would've shined.
Of course the publisher that fires their developers before they finish QA testing is doing an ATLA game. Because the Netflix live-action show wasn’t enough of a slap in the face to that franchise’s fans.
I've been playing on and off for a couple of years now. I'm no pro at fighting games, especially for TFH, but I found this game fun to play. It was different from other fighting games I'd played before and that made me like it even more. I'm glad the remaining fans got new content before the game was completely abandoned (when the new characters aren't breaking the game), but not finishing Story Mode is completely unacceptable. I've cleared Arizona's chapter multiple times but will never get to see the perspective from the other ungulates. There's no other way to say it; that is sad. I'm sure my friends and I will still pick it up occasionally and just play for sh*ts and giggles, but it's so sad to see an indie game that was done so well now become a relic. R.I.P. TFH
Fighting is Magic holds a special spot in my heart, I remember binge watching so many videos about it and being completely hooked. I'm sad I never paid attention to TFH until recently because it's so charming to see the early days of this game's development and how the story almost instantly got me hooked again, only to learn that we'll never get anymore updates with this game.
As someone who's just gotten into the game last year this has been such a sad state of affairs. I've been mostly out of the community and news, just casually enjoying the game once a week and I've been loving almost every moment (except those where I get beaten up so bad it feels like I can't even play, but I'm not blaming the game for that) Just last year one of my favorite games Awesomenauts (a 2D MOBA) got shut down because the studio went bankrupt, and soon after TFH is also looking like it's going the way of the Dodo =/ I really like Nidra, she's the character I most jelled with after Shanty, just wish the patch in general got the level of polish the rest of the game had. It's so easy to see how they've cut corners to rush this update like how Baihe's level 3 isn't even cinematic, or the lipsynch on some of the animations being off. I'm still hoping they will somehow manage to fix these rough edges, but this video just paints such a bleak future :( Here's hoping that the devs or someone else manages to get the game back like what happened to Skullgirls (I know Skullgirls is a whole can of worms to unpack but I'm not talking about that, just about keeping the game alive) Also shoutout to the sound designers of the game who I think don't get enough recognition, not only the OST in this game is fire but the dynamic music is such a cool detail to have and so well done for such a humble game.
Damn, while I'm not really interested in the Story Mode, (I've been more into the characters and gameplay) I can say that it really sucks to see a passion-project indie game get screwed over by a company and cancel everything that they wanted all because their higher ups just wanted more money/a return on their investment. To be honest, I'm at least glad to know that Modus/Maximum are the main people to blame, because it shows that the main dev team, Mane6, probably didn't want to do this, but had to due to their situation...
Thanks for doing this. Found out this was going on because of this video. Had two perks and a little bonus added because i really wanted to see this game get released. I was so hyped for the game. I'm doing my best to keep this game alive as much as I can I been streaming almost everyday been doing fan art coming up with story ideas I will abandon my story to come up with story ideas for Them Fightin Herds and much more
I got this for my niece because it was the coolest game I could think of where you can play as a unicorn. I should have got myself a copy too. Super lame about the layoffs. :(
damn, i bought the game recently because i used to have it back in its early days. the stronghoof patch and dlc was honestly fantastic and up to that point things seemed find. incredibly crazy how such a good game could fall from grace with just the smallest act of greed.
I’m new to tfh and when I found out about this game I had hopes for it but now I’m sad because I love fighting games and indie games in general and it so sad to see this game be buried in the digital fighting game space so much potential wasted
It had love, it had passion, it had dream and desire by the players....and it when to hell...... EDIT: Ok I want to also add that, it is so sad because, as you mention it, the fan game, MLP fighting got cancel and then pick up by Lauren Faust HER SELF to support and build this game...let me say that again, it literally DIE and got revive by fans and Lauren Faust to make this possiable....This say a lot, and to just put down like this....it is honestly sad really.
Thank you for this information. I clicked here to hear about TFH before buying it. You just saved me from giving $40 to Modus. Yeah, I was willing to pay the full price because I had heard it was such a great game when it came out. No longer buying the Avatar game either.
I've never played this game before, but the following seems strong enough that a petition campaign can be started. Companies' goal is to make money. So if there is enough signatures from fans of the game (as well as the FGC in general) attesting that they will only consider buying the Avatar fighting game if TFH is at least balanced with a new patch - it might be a enough pressure for them to respond positively. Not only that, it might be a good PR move for Maximum.
So, so, let's uh, let's recap what Maximum have done. 1. They publish a game called God of Rock 2. They abandon it 3. They acquire the rights to TFH and become the publishers 4. They lay-off the entire dev team 5. They abandon TFH 6. They announce that they are still making fighting games Honestly, it's scary how these lay-offs happen out of greed. And it's even more scary when the bad guy gets away with it! It's gotten so bad, that as of me typing this, people have stopped buying new games and have now turned to games that are either old or indie. I am so mad right now, like is this really the fate of the gaming industry? Imagine if someone wanted to get into gaming and they ask you what being a gamer is like right now. "So, dude, what's it like being a gamer?" "Oh, it's nice. Nothing special. Just a bunch of lay-offs, buggy games, and greedy publishers trying to empty your wallets." WELCOME TO THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF GAMING!!! LAY-OFFS AND CORPORATE GREED GALORE!!!
Aw man they’re publishing Diesel Legacy? That’s a cool looking game too (even tho it has Mike Z on it but I recommend just researching his whole deal before further judgements).
Maximum/Modus might have had to stop the development, not because of greed but because TFH wasn't making enough money in present time for them to keep developing it.
Between this and Skullgirls' censorship, pretty much the only indie fighting game worth playing anymore is Idol Showdown (and I guess Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid, but I'm pretty sure they've finished DLC for that game).
So for the best experience we should just buy the physical edition and never update the game and have 4 less characters then only play locals? Haven't played the game on my switch since the 1st dlc character and don't have my switch set to automatic updates i geuss thats the one ill play
The best experience is using the stable version under the beta section on Steam, it is 5.1 which has Texas and Stronghoof, the last patch before Mane6 was laid off.
Publishers don't care about the game developers, nor the game itself, and even less about the players who play it and support them. They only care about profit, nothing else
The publishers laid off the staff and then pushed a half finished patch that makes the game incredibly unstable with frequent crashes basically making the console ports unplayable and the PC version requires down patching, I think it's safe to blame the publisher.

@@ashemabahumat4173 they probably accepted for the need of money, making games is super expensive..like...a lot, and a little team rarely can afford to pay everything, so there comes the publisher with the money they need to make the game and even most important to advertise it, and most of the time they take like.. 60% of the finnal selling (selling? Is that? Well said?? Xd idk) So is really a difficult decision to accept a publisher, it helps a lot but it can also kill the game or the team
@@ashemabahumat4173 Bouncing off of what Konyneko said, it's exceptionally rare for an indie team to have the funds to self-publish a game. It's even harder when a game is built for multiplayer and needs support to be successful. That said, it's also impossible for the TFH devs to legally work on the game anymore. They don't own it, the publisher does. Either they convince the publisher to free their game or steal the codebase from the publisher and publish a pirated build. (This would be insane lmao)
@@TribowWhat!!! I had no idea publishers owned the ip like that. Shows what I know. This is so sad. It’s hasbro all over again. Its gone, and even worse a patch left the console versions unplayable? When I first heard about the season pass my first thought was story mode part 2 should come first. When I heard about the switch port I was super stoked because. I don’t have a pc. I wanted to buy this game. But yikes, it’s so sad because those ports definitely also took away from story mode.
Publisher laid off the entire dev team, game is in a currently super broken state (lots of game breaking and crashing bugs) with no one left who knows the engine, so I don't see it getting better, tournaments will probably have to load up a previous patch most likely.
At this point I legit believe someone who just wants female fanfics or "yuri" put a gypsy curse on any "all female cast" fighting games or other such games after seeing this and also Skullgirls. Where any time devs ever add even one non-female character to the roster that is playable, nothing but bad luck, terrible things and inevitable heat/series death will happen to the game and its devs and even fans. And the only way to fix it is to remove any male characters and keep it female only to remove the curse. I mainly believe this to be the case since I swear Skullgirls got infinite bad luck (and even was the catalyst without realizing it to EVO imploding and its CEO leaving for good) once Big Band and Beowulf happened. And some Touhou fan cursed everything to try to have female only casts or bad things happen.
Are you serious? Do u know that Them's fightin herds really did not perform well before Max Ent bought them? Did you know that the owners of Mane6 did get a big pile of money for selling the company? Max Ent did try to release the game on more platforms to see if they could revive the game, but it did not become profitable. So yes they kicked the developers, but the owners of Mane6 got their money. So who is greedy? Mane6 wouldnt survive even if Max Ent didnt bought them, especially last 2 years when everyone geting fired. You dont have the full story...
Tbf, the multiple platforms and focus on the season pass was also a money sink and costing development time. And TFH prior to the acquisition was doing decent for indie standards. Sure M6 themselves were incompetent; although prior to the acquisition I'd say the only problem the devs had were communication with the community and being absurdly slow. They of course need money to work on the game more, but prior to the Season pass characters and going multiplatform, the only thing that was needed for funding would be on just Story mode and Backer awards. M6 could've still survived prior to the acquisition, especially if they sought out other ways to gain more funding like another crowdfund, increased merch prices, or even simple stuff like cosmetic bundles or "support the devs" bundles. What they weren't ready for, was being acquired by an actual company that is controlled by investors. The Modus acquisition boosted their funding for a while, but M6 themselves were still the same; and with info that Modus told the devs "here's a deadline, finish it by then with no exceptions", things now started to cut corners which led to stuff like Stronghoof being less polished than Texas and even not getting dynamic music for his stage and beyond. Hell, the "funding" they got from being acquired most likely have been put onto the season pass and maintenance of the versions in other platforms rather than the main focus of Story mode and backer rewards; it's essentially giving someone 50 dollars, telling them to spend 40 to get you something, while they keep the 10 dollars. Really both sides are at fault. M6 for not having proper management and Modus using the game to get a return on their investment via Season pass and branching to other platforms. There's also the thing where this is not the only game Modus/Maximum have left too; God of Rock was also a fighting game that they outright abandoned after 1 major update (said indie game also had a multiplatform release thanks to these guys).
@@jandamz1119 it was Mane6 founders decision to sell the company in the middle of the covid boost, and they most definitely were informed about the future with TFH about season pass and console release. Im 100 % sure it didnt work out, max ent did not get any good ROI out of it. The IP is not profitable no mather what u say and its a shame Max Ent get all the blame when its in fact Mane6 decision that went to this
If it's not profitable to continue onto season 2, that would be fair, but they still have an obligation to finish season 1 properly. They butchered the DLC we already bought and paid for, and they did so in a way that ensures nothing will ever be fixed. There is no excuse for that, none. Stop defending this broken patch that quite literally destroyed the game. "Oh but the game wasn't profitable enough!" Yeah, and neither will any of their future projects now that they've told consumers loud and clear never to trust this publisher again.
I get where you're coming from, but the crux of the issue is that Modus does not care about delivering a quality video game. If they had, they would have cared about the state of this game and every game they have published. They would care more about supporting the creative vision of the games they are publishing. Mane6's mistakes are not indicative of greed as they are naivete. If given full creative control I doubt we would see a repeat of Modus' actions.

Publisher laid off the entire dev team, game is in a currently super broken state (lots of game breaking and crashing bugs) with no one left who knows the engine, so I don't see it getting better, tournaments will probably have to load up a previous patch most likely.
@@KlineFGC Ah shame, was gonna try it out alongside Granblue when I got a new controller, the ones I have all drift slightly.
bloody hell there awful
womp womp
Awooooo 🐺
So what I'm getting from this is. It's everybody's fault!
We need to cancel modus for this.
