You can use a wooden spoon to stir your Roux as well. More & More states are adapting to making their own kind of Gumbos. This is How we do it here in South Louisiana. New Orleans makes their Gumbo more on the stew side with adding okra. I personally love the broth Gumbo style without the okra. But nobody here in Louisiana that I know of add corn or tomatoes to their Gumbo. That's a northern adaption. Hope you make you a homemade Roux because if you do you can make anything! You can stop at the lighter color Roux to make a rice & gravy ect.. here is where Gumbo originated!
Gumbo is believed to have originated in Louisiana in the early 18th century. The dish reflects a fusion of influences from West Africa, France, Spain, and Southeastern Native Americans.
Here are some key facts about the history of gumbo:
    Ingredients
The dish is made with a variety of ingredients, including okra, shellfish, meat, and a roux base. The roux is made by browning flour and oil.
    Filé
Filé powder, which is made from the cured and ground leaves of the sassafras tree, is used to thicken gumbo. Some scholars believe that Choctaw Indians were the first to use filé powder in cooking.
    Other influences
Gumbo is closely associated with Cajun cuisine, but similar okra-based stews and soups can be found in other areas where enslaved Africans and their descendants lived.
    Regional variations
There are many gumbo recipes, with each cook adding their own unique twist.
    Eaten with bread
Gumbo is often eaten with warm French bread.
