If you don’t want to take the back seat off, you can fish a wire down there just lift the seats up then tape the wire coming from the back seat vent to your wiring harness from the camera

@@TheSundaeDrive Best wire route in this vehicle is down the driver's kick panel to the floorboard, where the wire can be placed beside the parking brake cable. Slice the grommet from edge to the center, insert wire and reinstall the grommet in the floorboard. It's waterproof and without the unnecessary seat removal or new holes drilled. Continue attaching the wire to the underbody harness along the way to the camera.

Been using self-vulcanizing tape for years. But this is the 1st time I have ever seen posi taps. I had most all connectors like that but these look pretty solid. I will order instantly. I like your vent idea also. Like the idea of not drilling any more holes in the truck that I have to. I drilled 4 yesterday and I'm freaked out over it.

    INSTALLATION NOTE:
Remove the drivers side trim piece from the floor, lift the carpet up, and right to the left front of the drivers seat is a gromet that has some wires ran through it. That's the perfect place to bring your wire into the cab of your truck. Just make a small cut in the gromet, and push the video feed wire through the cut. When you're finished, cover the cut, and the wire with some RTV sealer, and put a small piece of plastic-like from an old grocery bag over the RTV and it won't stick to your carpet padding. I hope this helps.

@Gimme Head I did this exactly. Do you know what wire that is in the grommet? My sound damper was completely soaked wet from something. Is that power stearing? I'm really curious party concerned from something leaking under the floor board for some time/constantly

@@jaredawesomekelsay as late as this is, I doubt you still have this question. But if so, the "wire" running through that grommet is the shift cable that goes from the gear shift in the steering column to the transmission. It doesn't have any type or power or data going through it. It's just a twisted metal wire with a rubber sheath.

Appreciate your in-depth instructions on the camera install.I have the crew cab and had to obtain a three foot single RCA extension along with a female-to-female RCA adapter I purchased at Wal-Mart.
The hardest part of the whole install was getting down underneath the truck and running the video cable (which I ran through the rubber grommet located on the floor directly underneath the driver's feet.

in the 07.5-13 Silverados and sierras, there is a grommet in the driver's floorboard that I fished mine thru. a lot less work than pulling out the rear seats. you just have to pull up the carpet a little bit to get to it.

I know quite some time has gone by since you made this but if you’re still wondering where the rust came from I think I know where. It’s most likely from the cab vents you ran the wiring through. The rubber flaps on them dry out over time and are unable to create a good seal letting water in. Running wires through only makes the problem worse. This usually leads to the rockers rusting from the inside out. The parts are kind of expensive considering what they are, and are not easy to replace. Not only are they kinda hard to get to but I believe they can only be purchased through the dealer which is probably why so many trucks are driving around with this problem. I would advise replacing the vents and taking the wiring all the way under the truck to the engine bay then finding an access point to the dash through the firewall.

Nice work! I recently installed a Dual AV receiver in my 2001 Sierra, now I have good guidance for installing the backup camera. I used the Metra dash trim kit for the double din chassis, using a 3/4" hole saw, to remove the radio basket. No need to fight with rivets, no need to mess with the dash support.

Also, you might consider adding a link for a wire harness that comes with a data bus that retains door chime, etc. (example, Metra LC-GMRC-01). Also, when taking out the factory radio I’ve seen a note that the dash support needs to be cut out to allow larger radios to be installed. Guess I’ll find out soon enough.

I'm so pissed that I got so involved in my tailgate bezel install, then the rust on the rear frame, then painting under the truck, that I never even thought about removing the license plate to get to the trailer wiring plug. I took it out but it only hangs down enough to sit under the truck and work on it. Simple install turned into 20hrs worth of work, BUT it's work that should save my truck in the long run at least. Swear it didn't even surface rust till the last payment.

    • @ginakerry2588

      Not quite that simple.
His pink wire has to splice into the light green wire that he mentioned.
Then the red wire on the video cable in the front has to be attached to an accessory power feed. There is usually an accessory power feed going to your radio from the factory wiring harness. (On my 99 Chevy Crew Cab it was the red Factory harness wire).
Then you just twist the two red wires in the back together.

I know this video has been up for a good bit, guys please don’t run the wire thru the cab vent 4:14 , lol my 06 Silverado started collecting water for that reason at the vent, what a professional installer recommended was to drill a hole under the driver seat floor just big enough for the rca wire, install a rubber grommet on the steel part, and put high heat silicone on it, haven’t had a problem since. Just my 2¢

There's already a hole on the driver's side with wiring and a grommet. Just lift the kick plate and carpet a bit.

      Some say Rev cam.
      Some say backup.

Sounds as if your vehicle knows you are going into reverse, but it has NO VIDEO FEED to display for you.
May be a bad RCA cable or your cam is not getting power, or bad ground on camera.
If you have a cam that has its own infra red lighting , then you should be able to see these lights on, if you cover the cam, even during the day.
Otherwise, it's hard to tell if cam is actually getting power without using a probe.

Does it make it easy to steal since it's the license plate?

    • @TheSundaeDrive
      @TheSundaeDrive  5 років тому +2

You would have to unscrew the license play and cut the wires. You could use security screws to make it less easy to steal. The camera is inexpensive tho so doubt it would be stolen. Worse case it is cheap to replace

    • @blueovalfan23

run it on a toggle switch and use a diode.

    • @ginakerry2588
      @ginakerry2588 Рік тому

If your head unit supports camera viewing while driving (most aftermarket do), then you just have to wire it a different way.
If your head unit doesn't have this feature, I'd advise against trying to trick it into thinking you are in reverse. That is an advanced scenario.
So if you are asking how to do it, You probably should not do it.
I would advise hire someone to do that, or get a stereo that supports full time cam operation
If you did want to do that you could use a diode or a toggle switch.
Just make sure that you get the type of switch that
disables power feed from one source when it enables power feed from another power source so you are not double feeding power to the cam while in reverse and melting wires.
