    This is a good book. Does provide a step by step introduction to how to build things ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 , also does offer some steps. Includes pictures to give you ideas for layouts and such. If you are looking for a guide, this is not exactly what you want. But if you are trying to familiarize yourself with the way that pole barn building and other out buildings, are made, then this will work just as you need it to. A few things in this book are a barn (of course), detached garage, storage building, and coops.

    I really thought this was one of the best videos I've seen in awhile. I LOVE the fact that it was 3 good friends helping to build a log cabin that none of them knew how to build ! I really admire your work ethic and commitment to the project. I see many negative comments and people telling you that this or that was wrong, but ignore them. If I was helping you (and I have experience building things but not log cabins) I would certainly have helped you do several things differently. But I wouldn't dare mention what those things are because I wouldn't want to insult you or "take away" from something that you put 100% of your effort, attention, and pride into. And you made it a fun project, working with your friends and enjoying the process.You stated early on that you knew nothing about building things, yet you managed to put together a structurally sound cabin that will keep you dry and warm. It IS AMAZING that you guys worked so hard on this and didn't "cut corners" just because caulking, chinking, or stripping the logs was hard work. I would be proud to be friends with all 3 of you. Thanks for sharing this video with us !

    Awesome job. For all critics please realize these are young guys with admittedly little to no experience doing this kind of thing. Easy for someone in the know to point out faults but if I was to built a cabin and it turned out exactly like this one I'd be mighty proud

    Very nicely done. I run a large trapline in Northern British Columbia. I'm allowed a line cabin for every 100 square miles,so I have 5 cabins rather identical to yours. The guy who criticized you using power tools has his head in the clouds. I didn't build my cabins for fun, but to survive the frequent -30 cold in the winter. I run a rain gutter along one edge of the roof, and it drains into a 50 gallon barrel for my source of water. Good luck.

      Brisdad53 you are certainly entitled to you opinion. As am I. I do think that they did an amazing job considering that 99% of kids their age would never attempt what they did. Most of their generation is sitting behind a computer and not doing anything with their hands. I think what they have done is awesome and I wish there were more kids their age willing to get out there and work at something and build something with their own hands. Although you clearly are a log cabin building expert and have probably built more log cabins by hand than you can remember these kids havent. This was their first attempt and they acknowledge that it isnt perfect. But they did an outstanding job and that cabin will no doubt provide them with years of enjoyment. They no doubt learned a lot and it is evident that they worked very hard. It is amazing, whether or not you are willing to acknowledge their accomplishment. Stop being an asshole and support their efforts.

    With a 1000 plus comments and plenty of time since you posted this is use your cabin, I'm sure hindsight, being 20/20, has shown you what you should have and could have done differently. This was a massive project you guys took on and I think you did a great job for first timers. I find it so irritating that people can be so negative, especially when most can only dream of doing what you have done. You can stand back, look at your accomplishment and smile with satisfaction. In time, you might make a change here or there, when you're ready and able. It'll still be your creative and physical efforts that made it happen. I was inspired by this video. Thank you for sharing it.

    It makes me proud to be a guy when I see some young, inexperienced really put forth the effort, and make something of beauty like this: congratulations BIG TIME. That should last for many years of vacationing and fun,.... and, it's something that you all (and your friends and relatives) can be proud to stay and party in: that had to be tough! More people in the world should do what you have done, and venture from their comfort-zones, and get out a DO shit,... they'd be a LOT happier accomplishing anything besides a paycheck. Again,... a phenomenal job all around, and, WAY to STICK TO IT GUYS!! Outstanding.

      Actually, it's the best time ever for it. Solar panels are dirt cheap (compared to when they came). The internet is full of information for people to learn ANY skill.

    Congratulations on your build! It's truly a labor of love! When I was doing major reno's for my Salon some ten years ago. I needed a lot of help. Even though it was only 112.5ft. The main operating area, is a rectangle. But with a cute little alcove that duals as a color/storage-counter/till area. I did a mosaic tile countertop with about five different tiles. That I just put in a pillowcase and smashed. I had a lot of fun putting it all together, even better when I went to grout. I ran out so I just added flour to the remaining grout, and vola! I had myself DYI mosaic counter top! It really looks super sweet, the custom glass top really pulls it all together.
    That's beauty of doing reno's your self, you get really creative, and use your brain in a different way. I have to say how impressed I am with your cabin/carpenter skills. You truly are blessed with talent/vision/ and most all drive and motivation. Also your friends are amazing and wonderful to give so freely of their valuable time and energy. every time you guys are their, you can bask in the labor of love, you all created together. Brothers for life! Life really doesn't get much better than that, except well finding a wife and settling down, and having a family of your own.
    I think more young people, need to challenge them selfs, and take the initiative, and go get life. It's just waiting for you, to come and get it! I sewer it will meet you half way, and things just start to fall into your lap. And that's God, showing you, that your on the right path! Keep it up, stay blessed young man, and congratulations once again! God loves you, and he just loves to help people, who help others before helping them selves! I can't wait to see more builds from you in the future!

    • @officialsurvivordude
      @officialsurvivordude  10 років тому +3

      Haha nope it's the right way. I know it looks like it is upside down but that's an exterior paint on the up side of the pieces! And the groves in the pieces go on with the larger gaps underneath to provide adequate ventilation underneath!

      ***** I just installed a roof like that and you are correct, it is upside down. One thing though, my roofing instructions say to use screws with rubber washers on the flat next to the ribs, no through the ribs. I have seen it through the ribs on other brands of metal roofing. IMHO he should remove and re-install the roof correctly. It will be worth it in the long run...

    • @officialsurvivordude
      @officialsurvivordude  10 років тому +12

      Allright I think we can all agree that the roofing is on upside down. The thing is that I used metal siding from an industrial building for the roof. The I placed up for the roof was the side of the tin that was placed out on the building. That side was coated with an exterior finish, the underside or "correct side" was unfinished. So I understand that it may be wrong but I feel like it was the best way to use this particular siding for my roofing material :D

    Nice work especially being able to use fire killed round logs. It will keep the bugs out. When I built mine it was 22 x 32 and hand hewing logs sucks. All the building is round log say for a few parts. The furniture is all round log the kitchen dining set is all built by me form trees around the cottage as well as the stairs leading to the loft, railings etc. The whole thing from start to finish took 7 years. I must say I have lost my taste for building round log furniture for now. Mabe some day I will do some more.

      @RadioSnivins 9 років тому +15

      Krystin Morris It matters a little bit. He's channelled the water to run over the fasteners. That's the exact opposite of the roof sheeting design. But, as SurvivorDude said, he was learning on the run, and only a ratbag would begrudge a chap for run learning.

    • @spyke123able

      Your correct, that the sheet metal is upside down, but in actuality it offers ventilation between the roof and the sheet metal that tends to create condensation when the heat of the stove meets with the cold sheet metal!

    • @DaStig
      @DaStig 9 років тому

      Sparkymax L yes because that is what you want from a waterproof tin roof, ventilation...
      It doesn't matter anyway because the top chords don't even correlate with the design of the tin roof, Even if he laid the tin the correct way they still wouldn't line up. makes no difference either way without guttering anyway. Wish I could have a project to work on like this it looks wicked!

    Your metal roof sheets are upside down, the screws are meant to be on the narrow ridges up in the air, not flush with the plywood underneath, so water can't get in the screw holes.

    Lots of UA-cam experts commenting but I thought this was a really cool video. I've always wanted to try this (along with a lot of other people I'm sure) but you actually did it, learning as you want. That's awesome.

    Great job guys. I can appreciate how much sweat equity you put in to your project. I built a log cabin from scratch a few years ago. Just peeling all those logs will discourage most people. I particularly like your loft ladder and your front step stringer design. Enjoy it and thanks for sharing.

    You guys did a fine job. I have built many over the years starting at age 15 with no training and each one got better as I went along. So I am sure it will be the same for you. Congrats.

    I was thinking about furniture for your cabin. In a simple life, a recliner that lays flat for a bed is very versatile and comfortable. You have a work counter, having a stool will be good for longer projects. A bench that is wide enough to sleep on and folds up to give you more floor space is versatile; when it is a corner with a fold down table, then you have another eating/project place. The table in the corner you built can be converted to something like in a camp trailer...the height of the table can drop to bench height to form a wide bed. Some day, you may not be climbing up to the loft, or you may have company that is either not comfortable climbing up there, or you may want to sleep more people for a night. A top bunk can fold up and away and can serve as a large shelf to store items. Hope these ideas help.

    Great job. Yes the roofing was upside down . But as long as you used the rubber washered screws you it will be fine. I'm a builder for 25 years now and your cabin is better built than a lot of newly built homes that a lot of so called contractors build . Kudos!

    Great job. Suggestion though is to leave it unlocked for lost hikers to use if necessary. Only keep the bare essentials in the cabin unless you hide something in a secret compartment. Vandals could be an issue if they need to break in. But vandals are unpredictable and could destroy it whether or not they can access it. However, Lexan is preferred to glass for a cabin.

    That's awesome ! I just wanted to say you can use metal wood burning stove pipe to pipe can be from Home Depot or Lowes hardware Black metal weed pipe is good the only thing is you need to separate it when the pipe goes through the roof for the wall, Set a hot pipe doesn't heat up the wood wall. What you do is around that wood while you get a fatter pipe and wood pipe that goes in wood burning stove is skinnier and then you have a clearance of about 2 inches. Then cover the clearance between wal

    Don't mind the ones who criticize your work and lack of knowledge on your first job. You and your friends have done a great job and will have a lot of good memories of building this one. Look at it this way, next time you try this you'll have good experience under your belt. I've always dreamed about building one of these for years but as the years roll by and now that I'm in the Fall of life I will no longer be able to fulfill that dream. So live it for all of us who won't have the chance anymore.

    Well done... no electricity limits tool power and run time. No framing experience makes for more trouble shooting. I'm a bridge carpenter so here's my 2 cents... the beams are laid flat, laid on edge will support more weight and it's integrity much longer. The wood for door and window that opens will expand when wet. Easy fix. Other than that hands down GREAT JOB dude's. That cabin will be around for a long time to come.
