- Опубліковано 10 жов 2024
- Join me as I start building a new log cabin, for free, and talk about the time I lived off-grid and show my old log cabin that has been standing for 25 years now - 15 of those years completely unmaintained.
Stay tuned for the following videos as I complete the cabin using all natural materials and stockpile food and other supplies for a year of off-grid living.

My Self Reliance Read my post I’m a girl please
very nice
This is just superb, been searching for "montana off grid homes for sale" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Tiyariaa Imposing Takeover - (just google it )?
It is a great one off guide for discovering how to survive in a disaster with your own hidden survival garden minus the hard work. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my m8 got cool success with it.
Well, I'm excited!
JoeRobinetBushcraft awesome to see you supporting friends
I'm a huge fan joe!!!
lol
I love your vids joe!
i was ust watching ur vids love it keep it up
Building a log cabin is a dream for most people, youre living the dream. Thats awesome👍
You are a true inspiration. I am very excited to see the cabin come together, and most of all I am thankful for how much I am learning from you. You are a great teacher!
I appreciate that. Thanks!
You are living my dream! Since I was a kid I have wanted to build a cabin in the wilderness and live off the land for a while. I never thought is was possible for me to do that. I have learned over the past few years that it is, you just gotta go and make it happen. Maybe someday i'll be following in your footsteps. Great video. Keep being awesome and keep on adventuring!
JSP Outdoors Thanks man, the best of luck and hard work to you.
how did ur dream turn out?
Shawn, you are truly BLESSED. Why? Because you are living out your dream, and others are blessed by watching it.
I've wanted to build my own log cabin my whole life. Maybe this will inspire me to do so. Looking forward to seeing this journey Shawn, Cheers till the next one!
Good luck, I still have to wait about 10 years.
I wouldn't suggest it
I have the same dream, Shawn. I want to build a cabin in the woods, and live off grid. Still have the rest of my life to fulfill that dream!
Can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to this. Grew up reading Foxfire books, so it'll be interesting to watch someone build a cabin in as systematic a way as you seem to be planning. Look forward to watching your subscriber numbers grow as well.
man just the way you talk and express you're self and the explanation u gave, just made me subscribe to your chanel keep up the good work
David Medina thanks David!
That'll keep ya busy for a day or two😜
This... is what i like. This is gonna be good.
He's building a cabin, you're building a mansion. Lol!
Scrambled O loogadat. i love watching people building log cabins
Your very fortunate to be born in a country where there is an abundance of timber trees, on such lands which are your very own, we don't got that in our Polynesian countries. Yours skills are exceptional. You're blessed.
I have gone back through the vids and started at day 1, I enjoy watching.
Hi Shawn! I've been a member of you channel for a few years now. I've watch with fascination the build of your homestead and then your move to the new location and beginning of the new build. My, how time passes. I'm now going to revisit some of your earlier videos that I never watched as well as your continuing progress. It will be a fascinating journey. Cheers, Steve from Rhode Island, USA
Thanks so much for uploading this video. I have always wanted to live off grid in a log cabin and have some reasonable experience in house building but I still learn learn new things all the time. I have my own techniques which are similar to yours, As for the Clay, if you mix good quality organic barley straw with your clay and add some cement powder. It will last for ever. About 15 years ago I built a garden wall for some one just out of straw, cement and clay. When they wash the wall down with the hose. It looks like it has only just been built, It has not aged at all.
I think that log cabin you built 25 years ago is just totally awesome and I think I read it was not even maintained for 15 years, which makes it more impressive.
I really enjoy watching your awesome videos. Keep the good work up.
What are you ratios of barley straw , clay , cement powder ?? how much can each ingredient vary ??
Yea, This should be good. Who isn't interested in a little cabin in the woo...er, bush. Looking forward to the series.
Those interior pics of your old cabin had me dreaming. Thanks
Very cool man. Looks like a ton of hard work, but so fun and rewarding.
I live in Maine. If I had seen this five years ago and lived closer I would definitely have taken up your offer to help in exchange for hands on knowledge.
I’m enjoying the videos though, and learning a lot just from watching. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge.
You're an amazing guy.. You have great skills and the stamina to follow through with huge projects..
I have an ability to easily think around corners and I pick up knowledge the way a magnet draws steel filings.. (Often, I don't even know where I learned the information from.) But, I am totally lacking in the stamina department.
You have a true gift, and you Win the Internetz!!
Awesome news Shawn. Looking forward to this.
Be well,
You are awesome! You explained things throughly and I liked the picture of the tools you were talking about. Thank you for making this video!!!
That old cabin has held up to the test of time quite good. Obviously well constructed. Great video! I look forward to watching more.
The Ageing Adventurers thanks. I have some exciting stuff coming up
Rock On Shawn ! Love your videos. You inspire dreams. Keep the Faith Brother !
Super excited for the subject matter, and appreciate the extra camera work that you're trying out. It adds value, keep it up!
Bushcraft Beats thanks! It's lot more editing work, but I like it too.
The early years! Fascinating!
This is exactly what my Dad wanted to do, I sure wish he could have lived out his dream before he passed. He was a fisherman almost his whole life Anne fished in Alaska a lot wanted to build there but it just never happened for him. I love the fact that I can watch you build your dream and feel my Dad with me watching it too...I can't wait :0) Take care...
Lori Sanford Thanks Lori. That's a good reminder to all of us to bring our dreams to life as soon as possible or risk having regrets.
I had asked for a list of th tools you used in building the large cabin you built last winter 2022-2023, I'm not so familiar with this phone nor all its functions, nor all of those things I asked you for. Just recently, I went looking for a back to back video, and then found a video that put all of those tools on display, just as I had asked of you. Thanks Shawn. B- Strong, B n Christ.
Now that's a project. Looking forward to the series. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Take care, Al
I am SO EXCITED to follow this series! Looking forward to it. Take care.
One of the best sites on the entire internet.
i like this stuff, in Australia we call them bush shacks, when my friends go camping i go with nothing except a hatchet, a hand swore and some good warm clothing and some food in a backpack, once they set up their camp i go and build a shelter for the night. I usually have it set up with I fire inside and a bed, I must do ok because I have survived every time in very cold and wet situations. I hope to learn some things, maybe add a survival tip to each vid or something as an idea, it brings in followers and people will go back and watch all the vids.
Great work. You and Joe are making power moves in the world of bushcraft.
Really looking forward to seeing more videos on this. I'll definitely be watching.
SHAWN I do like what your doing there !!! You are great with the mind & fingers there !!!
This is definitely my favorite video you’ve put out yet it’s very informative! I think I’ve probably watched it 5 times now!
Great idea, looking forward to watch retrospective and new build up too.
Bez stopy thanks for watching my vids 😂
This is awesome. Super excited to watch this cabin come to life!
What a great project and great series Shawn. Looking forward to it!
Nate
Awesome man! You're taking it to a whole new level..
I Love this guy... Someday this will be me, building my first cabin. Thanks for sharing!!
This is going to be a fantastic series Shawn !! Looking forward to the next vid 👍👍
Living off grid is my dream. I am planning on flying up to Alaska within the next year or two. First to just learn as much as I can from the locals. Then I shall be looking to get some land there.
For now I'm doing what I can and practicing my skills here in Georgia.
Garrett Parson Awesome, keep us posted
Garrett Parson prepare yourself for adjusting to the cold here in alaska! That accomplished we have an abundance of land and natural resources! I'm born and raised here and its amazing
Maybe I missed it but any plans to refurbish the old cabin?
The Wooded Beardsman I sold the property 15 years ago to a retired couple who built a home next to the cabin. The cool thing is they haven't touched it (or my dog's grave marker) and they let me photograph it last August.
That's pretty cool!
Your old cabin and the surrounding woods are beautiful! I'm looking forward to watching your series! Thanks for your work!
Nice video, I am pretty new to your channel but I am already really enjoying them! I love these types of videos and have been watching a lot of them lately. This spring and summer I am going to be doing similar stuff with my brother over here in the West, B.C.'s interior, so adding your techniques and theory to my own will be a big help.
yeah this series sounds really exciting can't wait!
Good stuff. My dad and I built his log home. Large full scribed logs. The logs are 20" plus on the but ends. And 40 + feet long. So it was a real project. Not off the grid and not with hand tools. I tend to dream about living off grid or mostly off grid but somehow I doubt it will ever happen. (wife and kids probably wouldn't like it lol)
I'm subscribed ...I love stuff like this keep up the good videos
That's for "real" , our grandfathers did it much the same. There weren't as many distractions then.(just a lot of work, and not enough time). Enjoy!
I'm excited too. Probably past excited!!!
Hi Shawn: I'm really interested to see how this goes. In 1962 - 1966 I rebuilt a Tamarac long house re- engineering a lot of it along the way. so you can see my natural interest Brian 76
Brian Spencer that's cool. I was considering a second structure on another property, more like a longhouse
Hi Shawn, I want to build my own log cabin like this too. I don't want to let the logs sit and dry for a season. It looks like you didn't do that either. I have read, however, that not letting the logs dry for a year will really mess the project up. What are your thoughts?
+Casey Jones What does it do?
For 50 years it has provided an all season vacation home for 3 generations of my family. Brian 76
Brian, respect.
I cant wait to see how this turns out. Thank you.
my buddy lives in Gilpin County, Colorado and there's a LOT of Lodgepole Pines in the area. I've never seen such a straight pine before. wish I would've had longer time I could've made a cabin on their property.
GrizzlyHillbilly Fortunate!
I wish I lived closer. I'd love to be able to help and learn how to build my own. it's been my dream to live off grid completely. even though I'm no spring chicken anymore, if I had the chance I would jump at it. I'm totally at peace with living a very simple life. the only thing I would miss is playing electric guitar in bands but I've got my acoustic guitars to keep me happy.
My nearest neighbor is a musician and wildlife recorder. When I was working on the cabin last week, the wind carried the sound of him playing his harmonica around his campfire. I play a little guitar and banjo as well, and it's almost as natural a sound to hear acoustic music up here as it is to hear the birds sing. Peace.
Looking forward to this series !!!
So this is where it began, time to start anew!
inspired to do this myself, thank you. The only way is all the way.
Great stuff looking forward to the series. Thanks Paul.
paul was taken Thanks Paul
Story of my life wishing you all the best.
Great video. Hope this one goes viral for you man!
MT Fan thanks man, that would be cool
Very interesting with a lot of good and useful information, shared very understandably. I don't sense that many youth these days would have this degree of ambition & ingenuity. Also one needs the wilderness space to be able to do this ... which essentially means it has to be done on private land ... and with sprawling cities especially in Southern Ontario where you are, the available land opportunities to be able to do this are increasingly diminished unfortunately. You obviously had a passion for cabin building years ago, and your passion for this lifestyle and log cabin building (and related) is obviously still very much alive. Keep up the passion, the good work and your willingness to share your knowledge and experience with others!
I was reminded that up in my neck of the woods in northwestern Ontario, there is a famous, remote 3-story log house with a 41' high turret built on the shores of White Otter Lake, somehow built single handedly around the year 1900 . It is only accessible by a multi day canoe trip, or by float plane. Search it out. It is quite a fascinating story to consider.
I also enjoy Joe Robinet's channel. I could see Joe and one of his buddies doing a multi-day canoe trip to White Otter Castle some day.
Awesome I am looking forward to this series shawn
HI Shawn, I am also building a small cabin using the same half round notch, I started using a compass to mark the logs but i could not get a good fit with out going back an recuting the notch. so i made a tool that gave me the same radius on both sides of the log. I have a video of it on my channel. anyway i wish you good times with your new build. Geno
Very exciting ! What a fascinating story man ! Really looking forward to the series. Peace
Oh wow...thanks for making these. I love the way you explain stuff. I am excited to be a subscriber!!!
Thanks! I am happy to have you follow along :-)
Amazing! Very motivational! Looking forward to seeing it unfold.
awesome. looking forward to this entire series!
One day I’m just gonna live in the woods to not be seen again
Me three
Me 4
Me right now
3 years later, do you have a plan or are you getting close?
Same😂
Excellent project, I look forward to watching your progress and learning.
rob M thanks Rob
Super awesome project.
I want a crosscut saw but haven't found one, other then antiques. good job.
It DEFINITELY looks like an exciting thing to do
Great video! Really appreciated all the details and explanations. Well done! 👍🏽
Just found this, will start watching them in order. We have a timberland property we want to build on, not sure what we’ll build. Might be lumber, might be logs. A lot of our trees are bigger than yours. Thanks for sharing.
super cool man i hope to make a cabin like this! you should do a series about this!
great video as usual! can't wait for the next!
rockett outdoors thanks!
great video, looking foeward to the whole series. Your friend is a really nice person. Keep up the good work .
Watch (if you haven't), the documentary "Alone in the Wilderness."
The dude shows some of his cabin building methods and might be a bit easier for you than hatcheting.
hell yea dude, your doing great!!!
Can't wait
Your cabin is coming together pretty good mr. Duke
Very nice! I am just getting into the UA-cam/Bushcraft game myself. I have been theoretically contemplating how building a small cabin like this would work... I wasn't getting very far. Thanks for putting it into a visual! :D
very cool can't wait to see more
Looks like this will be a cool series. I just watched your 3 day canoe/camping trip with Joe and he suggested to check out your channel. Subbed and I'm looking forward to the build.
Looking forward to see your log cabin Shawn. I'm going to build a tilt. They used them in Quebec for trapping. I just bought some tools for it. I just have to find a site on my land for it.
Rain DeFreitas Cool. Make sure you get lots of evidence. :). Did you get the camera from me yet?
My Self Reliance not yet shawn. I just got back yesterday from being away. But I should be back in the bush tomorrow. I'll check again tomorrow. 🙂
great video and very informative...I could only imagine after all the hard work relaxing in the cabin with that cedar smell....I look forward to watching this come together...subscribed 👍
Jay Robertson thanks man. I should have a new video up in the next day or two.
My Self Reliance ....Thanks! I will be sure to watch and look forward to gaining some of your knowledge so I can get out there and build one myself
Wow amazing,
Could you please post a step by step video of building a 8x8 log cabin please,
Amazing cabin by the way!!
The projects I've seen it's all been done in a fashion which is very mathematical. So making sure the timber has 4 squared edges and isn't covered in bark is a start, and that would be more likely to fill all the gaps properly without having to use my insert.
There's no need to hew the logs square, you can get a tight fit in the round by making a saddle notch along the length of the logs
Great! I found the first video...Can't wait to follow along...rr
If I get the chance I'd love to make a cabin. Probably would be more of fishing/hunting lodge on a 2nd property for me. I hope you'd be able to build a cabin on weekends and take your time with it well working fulltime
I'd call it the "Lincoln Log" notch method. Looks great.
Really looking forward to this
Man this is going to be an awesome series!
I've been wondering about the best way to notch the logs. Thanks for the info.
i subscribed because of joe and you building super shelter amazing stuff
cool idea. I'm really looking forward to seeing this project. keep up the good work and stay safe.
Fantastic! Excited to watch this one for sure! Great video! How long is your friend ok with you living on his land? Is your plan to move the cabin at some point or just rebuild another one when you buy your own ground? 👍
Thank you sir.
Looking forward to more of your videos.
Your friend is awesome!
Like the way you think, well researched. Good team............... .
