I had to wait 53 years! After watching Neil Armstrong step out on the moon as a 5 year old, I became obsessed with my uncle's Speedmaster. I even entered a local radio station's "Wishing Well" competition. My name was called out and my father took me in to pick from the wishing well... and I won some soap. Throughout the years the Speedmaster appeared regularly on my Christmas list. 50 years after first wanting one, the mortgage was paid off, the kids had grown up and left home, and I was tired of studying for a PhD. I wanted to withdraw, but told myself if I got it done, I could buy myself one. And that is what I did! On the way in to pick up the Speedmaster, I realised the date was the 20th of July! A 3861 sapphir sandwich. I love the accuracy, I love the hacking, I love looking at the movement. But most of all I love looking at it and being reminded that a 5 year old boy was lucky enough to grow up to adulthood, get an education, raise a family, buy a home and eventually get the watch he wanted so much. How lucky am I!
I bought mine 3 days ago, used, no papers, no box. I paid around 4000 usd, in perfect condition. It is the watch that comes to my mind, when someone mentions the word watch. After a long time, I made the decision, and I do not regret it.
So glad you got one finally! Congratulations! It takes a true enthusiast to ignore the meta hate/hype nonsense and make your own mind up. And it is a great, no question. Casual, smart, tool, timeless, legibility personified... Re your discussion about yours vs the 3861, I can add a couple of things (I have both). You watch is more legible (blacker, whiter, flatter) and while the new one has a more beautiful dial, it looses some 'truth' and feels slightly like a resto-mod. Also, the lugs on your watch are longer and they look far more elegant and sculptural. The 3861 winds better and keeps better time. Into the future I can see a few points of interest 1) Speedy Pros are slowly disappearing from boutiques (artificial scarcity) 2) the white dial shows the direction of the sapphire sandwich - it will move more premium and gain applied markers and a lacquered dial 3) the price will rise 4) the hesalite will disappear from standard production. I recommend that anyone with a current Speedy keeps hold of it - the days of affordable Speedies are ending!
Congrats Andrei! I bought mine some 3 years ago. Like yours, mine was second hand but in amazing condition for a 20 year old Speedy Professional. It is my absolute favourite in my extensive collection. It’s an occasional wear but every single time I wear it, I fall in love with it all over again!🥰🤩🤣😎
I bought my Speedmaster Professional in 1992 and pay for it U$S 1500 (another world). I used it as a daily watch until 2004 when I bought an Omega Planet Ocean (the one hoy use Bond in Skyfall). Having my second Omega and taking advantage of a friend's favor, I had it fully serviced in Switzerland to give it a second life in 2008. It is now as good as new (or better yet, more accurate), I still use it despite the Hesalite crystal that scratches so easily and I can't help but say that I understand why it was chosen for the trip to the moon. It is extraordinary, of timeless beauty and despite not being the most accurate, an extraordinary travel and adventure companion. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
I paid $7000 for my 3861 sapphire sandwich last year from Omega Boutique, now its $8000 and way more in Europe, there its over $9000. I never regretted my purchase, i like it even more now than last year. Great classic timepiece👌
I appreciate your willingness to be honest and lack of ass-kissing -- which are not present with many watch reviewers. Thanks for never acting as a shill.
I got the Speedmaster from my dad. He bought it when I was born and gave it to me when I was 20. I'm 31 now and every time I check the time or hear them ticking, I think of my dad. I will never give them up because I will never get that one watch again.
A must purchase is the classic Flat Link bracelet from Forstner!!! Trust me its very much like original vintage speedy and with it’s female end links makes the watch much more wearable 😊😊😊😊
Still my favorite in my collection. 3861 Hesalite. It’s easy to pick up, wind, just set the time and go. I do agree they don’t support the current asking price. Bought mine grey market and saved a ton.
The Speedmaster case is one of the best designs in the watch industry ever. I think the current "sapphire sandwich" is the best variant as it elevates the watch and makes it feel modern. The new FOIS is an alternative version for folks who want more of a vintage feel, similar to Seamaster 300 v. 300 Professional. Price wise it's fair compared to competition. So overall, it's a strong watch regardless of the hype.
The Professional model has always been my pick especially on the bracelet but those leather straps really enhance the watch. They look amazing! The price you paid is reasonable. The full retail price is outrageous. The Fortis in the video looks interesting as well.
I bought my Speedy 3-4 years ago and was going to sell/exchange them many times, since I don't like hype watches, but in the end I realized that it is unique piece and it has to be in my collection forever and then I wll pass it to my son.
I bought mine in 1996 and paid 2750 DM (which is now about 1400€😱); and it was my first mechanical watch… I still own it and had it serviced twice since then. And of course I still wear it…😎 I never felt being part of a hype… Let the others think whatever they want and enjoy a beautiful timepiece!!!
Speedy was my grail. When I retired several years ago my wife helped me get one. I don't wear it that often (I have a lot of watches) but it absolutely could be a GADA for me. It just wears so well! Over a Thanksgiving multi-day road trip it was my only watch and it was perfect.
This and the sub are the most iconic watches ever. I love the moonwatch but I do hate the way it's been disrespected so much by Omega/Swatch. The new prices are ridiculous and yes it has many faults but it's a true icon and a must for every collection
For 5 years, I've been collecting lots of brand and what I want now is just watches with Original Design, Timeless and most important thing is No homage to other brand (I personally hate the feeling of wearing the watch that remind me to want another watch 😮💨). Surprising the Speedy ticks all of boxes. In the end, I been owning and wearing Speedmaster 1863 with box and paper (3600 Euro) almost half year now and I would never sell this watch out of my collection! 😄
Great photography 👍. I've never been a fan of chronographs, lots of complication/thickness/expense to add a complication I very rarely need, plus most don't even read to 1/10th second and most Casios read 1/100th. However, you are right the Speedmaster is an iconic design and so much better than the Daytona which let's face it was a very unpopular watch at the time Speedmasters were being used on the moon 🤔
Great video as always. Coincidentally I tried on the Speedmaster Professional Saphire Sandwich yesterday *6.5" wrist" and I have to say....I was extremely underwhelmed. It fit me better than I was expexting and definitely wearable however.. As per your comment, Its Definitely not an €8.5k watch...more like €6k...and I love Omega. I own the PO Summer Blue and that feels like an €8.4k watch..
@BraveBeaters wow....that makes it even worse LOL. REALLY Nice watch but definitely not worth nearly 10k. You could almost have 2 x Tag Heuer Glass Box Carreras (a new Skipper and Panda) for that price
The video is super nice as usual!! Such a beautiful watch! Still, I would never buy it due to its connection to space. At the end of the day, it is a racing chrono (it was born for that) and not a pilot/aviation watch. That's why I've bought a stanning Speedmaster Racing 40mm reverse panda. No hype around it, a fair price with no speculation, a tru racing tool, an incredible movement, and 100mt water resistance. The moonwatch remains a beautiful piece, though. Enjoy it 😉
Congrats brother 👏 I just picked up the Speedy as well. The ref# 310.30.42.50.01.002 To me the Speedmaster is one of the best looking watches in the world ❤ and it looks amazing on any strap/bracelet/outfit.
Although well appreciated the Speedy was an easy pick up with discount and full warranty until fairly recently. I bought the big box hesalite on bracelet, and the original reissue of the FOIS both under £3000.In retrospect two good buys, but hindsight is easy. It's foresight that makes the best watch deals.
I have a Speedy Pro and a Panda. I like them both, but the Speedy gets more wrist time. Probably because it is easy to swap out the Nato strap to give it a new look each time. It's an absolute classic.
As an owner and a fan of both Rolex and Omega, while I agree it may not be "worth" the current retail cost, however., in terms of quality, if A Daytona is worth its retail price so is the speedy. Both great and beautiful. Forgetting about resale.

"The Watch Hasn't Changed A Bit In Sixty Three Years" What! Don't you mean it just looks the same, because it sure isn't the watch it was in 1963, with its Lemania based, column wheel movement. May I suggest if you continue to produce content, do try to understand your subject, it really helps if you actually know what you are talking about.
no matter how many fancy worlds are used to describe it, the lume is a joke and was only fascinating when I was 5 and had glow in the pajamas, and the accuracy is better on a fake Chinese F91w, but hey its expensive and looks catchy lol. Now that was curajos for all the injuraturi o sa primesc!

Yeah, OK, but what about the cock and balls 12 o'clock symbol. If only they would change that to two lines symbolising a v-jay-jay. I want one, but I just can't wear such an obvious cock and balls on my wrist. xx
I don't find speedy being that much of a status watch, and certainly not boring to my eyes, albeit mine isn't the standard version. Bought new since early 2000s and stayed in the collection permanently. Got try it, might surprise you 😉
i may be the odd one out but I'm not a fan. It is just so boring. Its the one watch that I would not buy for the reason that its so predictable and simple. There are so many watches that have more personality and the different models show what a waste of time the whole speedy thing is !
High-end mechanicals make no sense if you're looking for actual performance. Compared to quartz, they have atrocious accuracy, they're too delicate and vulnerable to magentism, and they need $500+ services every 5-10 years. They make sense if they make you happy, sure. But don't deceive yourself that it's some kind of performance option. Today's military/adventure/life on the edge guys wear Garmins or G-Shocks. Let's be honest: mechanicals like the Speedy have devolved into jewelry or status symbols. They're not watches for adventurers any longer - that was generations ago. Steve McQueen & Paul Newman are yesteryear's news, and so are their watches.

It's speedy time apparently. the timing of my video was unfortunately.
Yeah, OK, but what about the cock and balls 12 o'clock symbol. If only they would change that to two lines symbolising a v-jay-jay. I want one, but I just can't wear such an obvious cock and balls on my wrist. xx
Or instead of two lines, they could make it an 'i' v-Jay-Jay with the dot on top of the i symbolising the girly G spot. I could work with that. ;-)
Dude what is wrong with you?
haha! You can''t unsee that on a speedy, I know :)))
Congrats but its one boring watch. Give it sometime when honeymoons over you will sell it 😊
Great watch but too big for my taste. Reduced to 39mm is ❤
Of all the grail, hyped, status watches, the Speedy is the one I would gladly pass on. Apart from the moon history, I find it bland and boring
I thought the same. Then I tried it. It has not left my wrist since then (145.022 from 1988 with the 1450 bracelet).
I don't find speedy being that much of a status watch, and certainly not boring to my eyes, albeit mine isn't the standard version. Bought new since early 2000s and stayed in the collection permanently.
Got try it, might surprise you 😉
Gee, I could buy a piece of jewellery,; or a new camera and lenses, return airfares to japan, and a month accommodation.
Whatever works for you.
En inglés por favor 🙏, no hagáis traducción
i may be the odd one out but I'm not a fan. It is just so boring. Its the one watch that I would not buy for the reason that its so predictable and simple. There are so many watches that have more personality and the different models show what a waste of time the whole speedy thing is !
Got put off by the hype may be?
