The Path of Neo had a really interesting mechanic where how well you did in the tutorial dictated your difficulty level without actually informing the player. You would fight progressively harder enemies in the Lobby Shootout from the first film. You had access to all of the moves in the game but you had to input them from memory without button prompts. So it was very difficult to unlock the hardest difficulty without already knowing how to play the game... but it wasn't impossible.

Huh. How did I not know about unlocking 1999 mode from the menu with the Konami code in BioShock Infinite? Cool!
If you enter Axe Lord as a name in symphony of the night you'll get Axe Lord armor in your inventory, there's another one too but I can't remember what it is
I beat Mad Chainsaw, and I killed Dr. Salvador. It would've been really cool if they brought back Mega Salvador and his Duel Chainsaw

First instance of the Konami Code wasn't in Contra it was in Gradius. Contra is the game that brought it to mainstream.

If you play yakuza 0 with the item from the beginning, it just the mode. I became super powerful.
