Things are worth what others value.
It's a buyers market. You get what a buyer wants to pay. In this case, the presenter alludes to the UNESCO treaty of 1970. Which doesn't necessarily exclude this, because they, I feel , should be returned to Peru. But that's not my decision. My thoughts on the value are linked to the said treaty. Why? Because of the fact that many in the market feel they should be and therefore the value is limited by that.
In pure gold ounces, is soft plurable gold in general. Weight is not high.
If i owned that sh*t I'd put them on thick fake gold chains and wear them like a black rapper... "bling, bling"
As it was (we believe) bought in good faith, before the "rules" - perhaps it could be offered back to Peru at a reasonable, agreed cost in the same way. Some stuff just needs to go home.

They should not even have these items on this show. Notice how first half spent on excusing themselves from any legal actions. And the piece from 'before Jesus Christ' - despicable.
People need to realize how complex history is. In the past, these items weren't very valuable. If you buy something today, it should be yours in the future even if it becomes valuable for reasons we can't foresee now.

The acquisition before the time period may be legal, but it most definitely is not ethical, its like Queen Victoria claiming the kohinoor diamond was a gift to her when everyone knows it was forcibly taken from the maharajah by his English "guardian". I hope she does the right thing and donates it to a museum.
Unesco protections were put in place because Europeans felt entitled to take items of cultural significance back as souvenirs, it is theft. The very definition of entitled privilege.

how many meals were put on the tables of locals by the presence of people collecting these artifacts. cultural significance means nothing when your kids are hungry.

Wrong. I visited the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City in 1986. Ten years later, 1/3 of what I saw had been pilfered by museum employee's and sold to the underground. Third world countries are NOT the best place for their own antiquities. They simply vanish and for very little money.

Were you sitting there recording them when they sold it? Museums do not always display everything. They take in and pull out objects.
Hmm even if these items came out before the ban in 1970, which is doubtful, they should be returned. There was a ban for a reason, the culture and history was being sold and traded away and it cannot be replicated, or in other words pillaging.
But money and greed always come first and she's apparently the "owner" of these items, even though she and her father who appropriated them, have no cultural identity or connection to them. 😒 Quite sad really that this sort of thing still goes on.
This also happened with Mayan artifacts.

Priceless. I wish she had it within herself to give it back to the Peruvian people so that it could be in a museum there. That would be ideal.
So that it can disappear forever ? I visited the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City in 1986. By 1992, 1/3 of the artifacts I saw had disappeared. Theft by museum staff and local politicians. Some things are safer in the hands of another country, especially when they are from 3rd world countries like Mexico and Peru.

Or was it possible that the artifcats were rotated and simply in storage or being preserved by someone behind the scenes, while a new exhibition of items was placed out? That is very common. I'd sell it to a museum for future generations to appreciate it. They would def take care longer than a personal collector who would eventually have to sell or pass it down to someone before they died.
Museums often don’t take care of items and have them in the wrong climate, destroying them. Sometimes private owners do a far better job of preserving items.
If we're discussing a public museum, like anyone else, they need funding to acquire items. Ultimately, it boils down to how your tax dollars should be allocated.
That is the most underestimated value of all time. 3 rhino horn cups were valued at 1.5 million and so many other million dollar valuations on roadshow. Only a king would have things like the golden god with emeralds and rubies 2 thousand years ago and it’s worth 50 grand. I don’t think so, a private collector or museum wants the collection and has corrupted someone to give a low valuation so they can get it. Even Rick at the pawnshop would’ve paid half a million. Anyway it’s been stolen from a graveyard. How do these people get away grave robbing when it’s highly illegal. Someone has been buried with their belongings for use in the afterlife. They had contact with the Gods and were sure it was real. Maybe when these tomb robbers die they’ll be confronted by Mayan Kings and Egyptian Pharaohs like Ramses the Great demanding to know why they stole their possessions. Now that would be scary

As historic objects they are of course priceless, but museums do not pay you for the items, or at least not as high as private collectors.
If it comes down to profit, items are worth what people are willing to pay for them.
The market for baseball cards and such is huge but how many people collect peruvian items? High prices are generated if a lot of people want something and start fighting over it, that's why sometimes auctions go crazy and go up to way higher prices than estimated.
Also you need to consider that in this price-range it is not only collecting, it is investing. And the potential profits and rise in prices are much higher for things like baseball cards, comics etc. than peruvian art and jewlery.

I was watching another episode of a ring from 1200-1300 ad get appraised for something like 10-25k$. To me, if I were a millionaire, Id have no problem paying obscene amounts for gold and jewels thousands of years old. Of course, I would absolutely loan it to a museum for public display, but just the ability to handle something as old as this and possess ownership of it.. Thats just nearly priceless.

First, these artifacts are made of gold and other materials that stand the test of time. Second, they were considered valuable at the time of their creation, and were treated as such. Third, there are literally thousands of these and similar artifacts, but most are in museums at this point, which makes personal collections very valuable. Finally, old baseball cards are made of cheap paper and people generally saw no value in them in the first place, and so treated them poorly.
Age is not the only factor when determining value., but yours is a good question as I am sure a lot of people wonder the same thing.

Keep in mind that the guy (her father) that bought it, bought this stuff from Peruvians, and paid them a lot more than any Peruvian would have. Of course if he's there more than a decade, raises his little girl there, then he is somewhat Peruvian himself. In any case, he obviously appreciated these things more than at least some Peruvians did at the time. The reason they are today safe, preserved, on TV, and in good hands for the moment, is because of that guy. Don't be too quick to demand it back right now. It's not going anywhere.

To the people here virtue signaling about theft of heritage and grave robbing,
If you were to separate yourself from the space time continuum and be able to view each 'culture' or civilization's 'artifacts' you would see that the entirety of humanity's culture and heritage is based upon the forced and voluntary relocation of both artifacts and people from one region to another. There would be very few cultures of any size, historical importance or duration that were not both victor and vanquished at some point in their history. Diaspora and conquest has been the hand that has shaped and formed humanity, it is often, far too often from a subjective perspective, a very horrible and ugly process, but it is the process that we went through. For every sin you count inflicted upon you or the last 5 generations of your 'people', there is at least one that just a little further back your 'people' inflicted upon another. Let us not forget that the people that created these items were themselves very war like and brutal in their culture. They were also architects and builders and the planners of great cities as well as creators of great artistic works and what went for literature at the time. They looked at the sky and divined a pretty accurate cosmological system that in some ways stands up to scrutiny even today. They also made unprovoked wars of resource and prestige upon weaker states, owned slaves and engaged in human trafficking and sacrifice to appease gods of their own creation while promulgating a cleric state that hoarded resources and used slaves as a labor force.
None are innocent if you look back far enough. And the perpetually impoverished are rarely conquered because they offer no spoils for the conquering. If your people are subjugated its because they had something worth taking, which they likely got in the same way it was taken from them. We have to reach pretty far back in history to find some people who were the first conquered people.

Very recently, through the advent of world wide spanning technology, these concepts are being challenged, as to their moral validity. Change through global awareness is now possible, and is not just a virtue signal, but a real effort to right previous wrongs.

I had a teacher in high school who lived in Peru and they had solid gold balls and artifacts from graves that were looted and then she smuggled them into the US it was unbelievable to hold that stuff in your hand!

The bodies of the ancestors of the Peruvians who looted the tombs were of no value to them, so the bones are destroyed or left where they were. The artifacts were sold to people who valued them in every way more than the Peruvians. They belong to them now.
They keep lowballing this stuff. Talk to museums, if authenticated, the honoraria will be way above the Antiques Roadshow estimates. It doesn't matter if you say it with conviction, that doesn't mean it's necessarily so.

A lot of comments about it being "stolen". We have no evidence of that. It could have been purchased from a native or excavated with native permission. Also, why is it better for the local peruvians to have it? It isn't theirs either, it belongs to the dead. Would you go dig up the grave of your neighbor and tell yourself it belongs to you because you live in the same country? Shame on you all for being so corrupt with hate.
