Extreme conditions at Scheveningen - tragic ending 11-05-2020 for five surfers

  • On May 11th 2020 I went sit-kiting at Scheveningen (The Netherlands). The sea was rough, the current was strong and there was lots of foam floating on the water. I decided to quit my session after getting slightly in trouble. When I came home I heard six other surfers got into trouble as well at the spot I was surfing, but with a terrible ending. Five of them didn't make it out alive.
    Never underestamate the power of nature. The sea gives so much, but she also takes. I'll keep on pusing the limits, but stay mindful about the risks.
    I send my condoleances to the loved ones of the surfers who past away.

    This was a devastating event to surfing internationally. My sympathies to the dead surfers and their families. Willem, you observed the conditions and got out because you assessed the situation in time. I myself have had to make that choice on several occasions and do not regret leaving the surf.
    The foam situation probably caused the problems for breathing at the surface for those boys who are now lost to us. The difficulty was not anyone's fault nor could it have been forecast or foreseen. This was nature at her worst. She took away some of the best and it's not fair.

    Tragic for sure! Been kiting since 1999 and this sport has the potential to make people think with everything but their brain....I have seen many times how the ego and the rush to tell the best story nearly caused serious accidents wherever I go. This kind of incident will cause local authorities to control where one kites in future which will be a shame...because part of the enjoyment is the freedom in many respects!

    Extremely important to spread the word that surfing in foam could be very dangerous. My self did not have a clue that this was something to respect. The more you think about it it is now obvius that once the kite or windsurfing sail goes down it could be impossible to relaunch out on the water. If the foam is thick you could also be trapped and have problems to get air and breathe. I am thinking about the families left in sorrow, RIP.

    This tragic event has been widely reported in the news as an accident happened to a bunch of surfers that got into difficulties in rough seas while the truth is they weren't surfers, but kite surfers wich makes a hell of a lot of difference in how prepared both physically and mentally one can be in dealing with the ocean, waves were clearly not big, but choppy mess that no experienced surfers would bother paddling out for... Before you face the ocean make sure you do your homework first...
    RIP.

    • @sunsuncoffee4945
      @sunsuncoffee4945 4 роки тому +1

      The group consisted of a mix of surfers, kite surfers and body surfers. Of the 5 that drowned, three were experienced life-guards who had had extensive training abroad (Australia, I believe). The group had extensive experience at this spot and were physically in good shape. This spot can be very hazardous when the winds and swell pick up. The North Sea is a shallow sea - along the coast sand bars are continuously shifting causing treachourous currents and rip-tides.
      The 5 victims were taken by surprise when the wind picked up and heavy foam started to drift in. The layer of foam they got stuck in was 2 metres plus causing them to become disoriented and making it very difficult to breath. Add to this the fact that they were being pounded by waves with very short intervals. Also, even with a wetsuit, the body loses warmth after about an hour in these conditions (cold water, gale force winds).

      The foam is initially formed by dead algae. Protein is released from the algae and the strong wind is whipping it up. That, plus a strong current and the way the spot is shaped with north winds (funnel), created this drama.

    This is a very tragic story and it kind of freaks me out that so many people lost their lives in this way. I haven't found much follow up on this and would like to know more, so that their tragic experience is not in vain. They were experienced in the water, so the conditions did not seem dangerous to them, and I'm sure they were not uncomfortable in large waves and difficult conditions. I feel that I would have felt the same in their situation. So what happened here? What happened that the conditions were so dangerous? Was it the foam? Or a combo of the conditions and the foam. I've seen large foam in large waves, but I'm not sure if I would recognize it as dangerous, as in these conditions. Conditions in the surf can look really rough, but it is rarely to the point of being tragic. Usually danger in the water is caused by rocks, or reef, or nightfall, not by big waves. What can surfers do to recognize the fatal conditions and is there a way to deal with it if you are in these types of conditions? I feel really bad about this happening and am having trouble getting a grasp of the details of the conditions and what really happened, and would like to hear the details of the conditions.
