I've read two books by Jon, and they are extremely in-depth. This 7 minute video, however, is a nice, succinct and to the point mind-opener. This is a great introduction to the concept of mindfulness!
I highly recommend Full Catastrophe living, a wonderfull book on meditation. Thx Dr Kabat Zin for introducing mindfulness into medicine. God bless you and greatings from Kuwait.
A perfect and natural description of how we live our lives, even in the background of the video you could see human beings doing and not being. At one point someone running across the road obviously late. Its so true that bing in the moment has to be a committed practice and it doesn't become habit. You need to create a habit to remind yourself to practice being in the moment. Give yourself 30minutes and you get more in return. Namaste
Luckily I get to employ mindfulness in a serious clinical setting in a forward thinking psych hospital and it truly changes lives, and develops a much needed meta-mind that can step back a bit from the domination of thoughts and emotions over oneself (they arise in the body like other sensory experiences). This is crucial for ameliorating many forms of emotional/behavioral problems. This man has a lot to do with how and why this stuff is taken seriously in the medical community and his explanations are excellently clinical & a little mystical! Thanks Dr. KZ!
Ty again Mr Zinn. I needed to hear this. Especially after reading how PTSD changes the brain's structure. Poor little hippocampus... Neuroplasticy is an amazing subject & one that I too often forget about.
I guess that's one way of looking at it. :-) Mindfulness helps me understand that what I perceive, is not necessarily 'the truth', it's just the way I experience it. Mindfulness as a way to connect with love, to connect with God.

+Marieke van Lingen I dislike religion for all its hypocrisy as well as the lack of logic that is required to have faith, but as you eloquently said, "some might relate to what I'm saying, others not". All I wanted to say was, I have met and spoken with only one person over very many years that is as comfortable with their faith and manner of living life as you are, with no apparent need to defend it so vigorously that it comes across as aggression or at least insecurity. We all die, we just differ in how we deal with it...(and that's when the fight started ;-) ). Whilst I don't share your views, I very much appreciate your approach and humanity.
Agreeing with brozley; I don't know how deliberate the backdrop of cars and people rushing around with their heads in their own lives was but it feels like a perfect counterpoint to his words. Sometime JKZ talks too much but this is my favourite clip and I watch it any time I need to reconnect with the essence of his teaching. A liberating, powerful and loving message. There's no reason to beat yourself up or struggle internally because you desire liberation. Desiring not to desire may seem like a paradox, but it's still an important first step along the way, to be discarded when the time comes. "The desire for truth is the highest of all desires, yet, it is still a desire. All desires must be given up for the real to be.....When all search ceases, it is the Supreme State."- Nisargadatta Maharaj

I agree. This is a very effective skill to share and teach and gradually bring about change around us. I would begin with children and families. I recently completed an 8-week mindfulness training and honestly feel like it will stay with me forever, as I practice every day. The changes are subtle but tangible. It's good to share this knowledge and encourage others to learn it. Let's hope it will lead to a more peaceful world.
I do agree, its like many people I know only live for the weekend, they moan so much at work, how they just cant wait for Friday, they get all stressed out, wishing the days away just for that weekend. And then if you get into a bad accident you're mentality would totally flip where you cherish every day you're alive.
ai ai ai the geminis... also a flattered tongue but unsure till the end whether what they say is true/the best truth they could found /something they are ok with .If he could know how right he is. My intuition knows exactly what s the best for it , i want to take this magic little lifesafer "key" and give it to all poeple in the world at the same time. Its really time to wake up!!!!
I believe that both JKZ and Tolle are pioneers in bringing mindfulness to the west. Jon , being a medical doctor has a more scientific approach while tolle is into metaphysics. My favorite books by JKZ is 'Full catastrophe living" and by Tolle "The power of now". These helped me tremendously when I was going through chemotherapy. Peace!

4:53 Finally the man in the down right corner had met his date after waiting almost an entire video for her. :) Back to the video: an interesting approach on mindfulness. I've always found the word to be quite complicated to comprehend its meaning.
Great video as I would have expected from him. However, I am puzzled by his remarks on minute 1:30: ‘To live your life as if it really mattered…’ I wonder what he meant by this. It feels almost out of context and not in line with what he and other masters say about meaning of life.
Letting go does not entail pushing away or grasping; they are two sides of the same coin, and as long as you are on the spiritual path a desire for peace and happiness for oneself and others is a good thing to have. It is good to have a good motivation, if you have no motivation how will you begin your practice? It will be very frustrating. You let go of more and more as you go on the path, but you hold on to what is helpful at this moment... eventually you will have to let it go as well :)
English subtitle: Life is right now - Jon Kabat-Zinn on Mindfulness
The latest research in mindfulness is showing that it is possible to actually practice paying attention and systematic ways that change the way the brain is wired, changes the way the brain functions, changes the very structure of the brain in ways that enhance well-being and clarity and multiple intelligences. So this is a very very exciting time where science and meditation are coming together because we are discovering that the human organism is really capable of profound, the technical word is called ‘plasticity‘, that the brain is an organ that changes in relationship to experience and actually the chromosomes are changing always in relationship to experience and so meditation even seems to be able to drive changes in which genes in our chromosomes are being upregulated and which genes are being downregulated which means we have a lot more freedom to transform our organism and our life experience and attain some degree of profound wellbeing and satisfaction than what we ever thought. That is scientifically amazing and it also seems to be the case. Mindfulness is a way to live your life as if it really mattered and that envolves being in the present moment with openhearted presence and kindness towards yourself. Well, all of us are very bussy so how do we bring mindfulness into our life? The way to do it is any way we can that feels right to us, so there is no one right way to do this, but certain ways in which we cultivate awareness can be very valuable. And one thing that we might bring our awareness to is the body. And just a sense of remembering to feel, us, our lives unfolding in the body as opposed to only in our head. So that can be done in many different ways. Essence of the body as a whole, walking, sitting, eating, moving, or just being in touch with the breath, ones own breath, and the feeling of the breath coming into the body, a feeling of the breathe leaving the body but it is important to remember it is not about the breathing it is not some breathing exercise or something special you are supposed to be doing it is recognizing that it is very special that you are breathing at all. If you are not breathing, you are dead. So could we be aware of breathing and how special this is and feel the energy of it as if in this moment this is my life and it is not waiting for the weekend to have my life or waiting when I finish some big project but every moment is my life than even in very stressful situations you can move in to the actuality of situations and find ways to move with it and regulate your own reactivity to it so that in some very very deep way you are not running away and you are not pushing through anything but allowing things to unfold as they do that is the heart of creativity and that way we get the most work done with the least distraction and the least effort. It is an art form and it takes a while to learn it is not something where you just hear me say this on the web and the next thing: oh yeahh i will be mine for the rest of my life. It is one of the most difficult things in the world if not the most difficult thing in the world for us human beings to do. It is to be present in our own lifes and to be kind and less judgemental of ourselves. That is why it is worth doing it, it is worth practicing but it is not a doing, really, when all is said and done, it is a way of being and actually a way of being awake and yourself. In the present moment, which is the only moment wherever we are actually alive and tends to get obliterated really squeezed to the point where we are not in the present moment anymore we are always in the past always in the future and that is a prescribtion for unhappiness. Happiness is not some of the time when you know at the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. It is right know in the midst of whatever is happening and this is an art form so it does take some time, it doesnt involve some discipline but i would through out well what else is there to do because if you are missing your entire life whatever moment you decide that it is time to reconnect with your life that moment guess when that will be it will be now. Again. You look at your watch, Oh God, It is now again. So we only have moments in the now so why not make the most use of them? What is the most important thing that i have learned over the years about mindfulness? I do not know. That it is a mystery? That it is a gift? That we are genuises? That we are miracolous beings? And that we ignore the most of our beauty and drive ourselves crazy over all these things that are really not important. So we are driven by the urgent, miss the important and then wind up a lot of time being unhappy and than look elsewhere for the solution. This is a prescription for disaster and when i see people coming to mindfulness our medical patients for instance by the hundreds by the thouthands by the tenth of thousands and turning their lifes around and having many of the medical symptoms fall away and coming to live their lifes more fully - it is an unbelievably gratifying work, so this work is moving into medicine it is moving into psychology it is moving into psychiatry it is moving into education into the law into the governement. And that itself is a very good sign for humanity. I`ll say one last thing I guess which is that we call our species homo sapien sapien and latin, the species that knows and knows that it knows, the species that is aware and is aware that it is aware. Well, so far I do not think we have really lived up to that name as a species. Now with the ecological crisis that we are in and with all the other crisis that the human mind is created for itself and for the planet maybe it is time for us to wake up to what that name is actually pointing to and fully embody yourself in that way as a species that understands our capacity for awareness and then balances thought-out in a way that has profound value and ultimately when all is set and done I call it love.
The Supermysterious aspects of Chronos. "one looks at ones watch' 'oh its NOW. One looks again later,,'oh! its Now!AGAIN!'" How amazing is The Everexpanding Noninherent Unmoment!
His last point reminds me of something Alan Watts said in 1970. (on UA-cam "Alan Watts breaks down what is wrong with the world" part 1.) There is a thread of Buddhism that I detect. Thanks for posting!!!!
Do you find sitting meditation difficult because your body gets restless or stiff? A little bit of mindful movement and stretching before meditation can help your body settle into stillness. That is one major reason why we believe yoga was created centuries ago! Yoga and meditation are intimately connected. They can be part of the same practice. Try some Mindful Chair Yoga, a gentle and accessible practice that integrates yoga and meditation.
Besides, the Buddhist criticism of "Attachment" or bondage means something more in the way of obsession or unexamined habit. In Alan Watt's words, "Attachment doesn't mean to enjoy your dinner. That is perfectly natural." Or to enjoy sleep, or have a desire for enlightenment. There is no one completely without desire. It's craving that is the problem. I totally know what you mean about how trying to eliminate desire seems like a paradox. But it's really just a conceptual problem.
@PCSKAKU I don't think it really matters though. It isn't a contest on who said what first. The message is the most important thing. Besides, I am sure he has namechecked ZEN before. Would be surprised if he hadn't.
I agree. It's also important to realize that Tolle and Zinn's approach are certainly similar but at the same time significantly different. I've listened to both Zinn and Tolle and I find that I gain insights and understandings from one that I do not gain from the other. Tolle will give methods and practices that Zinn does not that I find helpful and Tolle will explain the reason for certain experiences and phenomenon that Zinn does not. Zinn is nevertheless very helpful in ways Tolle is not.
No, this is not an opinion. It is very real but not easy to convince others. We are what our past experiences have made us and we are driven by that programming. Like riding a rogue elephant, we have to gain control or else we are taken where we prefer not to go. I have meditated for some time and I realize that one can only benefit if there is a desire to gain control of an ungoverned mind.
Living in the present means to cultivate complete conscious awareness with our thoughts and emotions as well as with our sensory experience. It is the lack of mindfulness that leads to emotional suffering. You can learn more about online Mindfulness Therapy and training at www.counselingtherapyonline.com.
Saying that Tolle ripped off Zinn is like saying Zinn ripped off Buddha. Ridiculous statement.. In my opinion, it's just great to be hearing this message from whatever source. the clinical psychological community are coming to a meeting point with 'ancient' eastern philisophical/spiritual teachings. That is good news as we in the West trust science more than anything approaching the 'spiritual'.
@PCSKAKU You find all these things in most ancient religions, it's not Zen speciaist per se. And I think that's the very thing he's trying to avoid by not mentioning Zen at all - because that's really not the point. It's correct out of the most known modern religions, zen buddism does offer the most direct contact with the water - or consciousness, however, the consciousness and the wonder of life existed long before zen and will also outlive zen if it ever have to.
Jon , you´re so necessary people to contemporary world. Thank you so much.

Its sooooo sweet i love his thoughts they inspire and proof me ive been doing right.
Peace!
It's funny. This video was very motivational to changing som stuff. I thought I got it over a year ago, hence the motivatio, and I've seen this many times. Now I understand it different. The same video, but there are different levels of understanding it. Try this thing he's talking about folks, it is no lie and there is so much depth and dimentionality to it - that is ever rewarding!
4:53 Finally the man in the down right corner had met his date after waiting almost an entire video for her. :)
Back to the video: an interesting approach on mindfulness. I've always found the word to be quite complicated to comprehend its meaning.
the way they disappeared though :)
great observation and comment!!
very true and good way of living life
This reminds me of Eckhart Tolle's teaching. It's fantastic, I will definitely get Jon's book(s). Simple and to the point.
Very good video ! Thank you for sharing .
Love this:) Its a mystery and a gift- this is how I think of my shamanic work. We are beautiful. WE are one.
10 years to a time of the pandemic and a vote on 2020 that requires a heart based awareness

Classic teachings
Great video as I would have expected from him. However, I am puzzled by his remarks on minute 1:30:
‘To live your life as if it really mattered…’
I wonder what he meant by this.
You let go of more and more as you go on the path, but you hold on to what is helpful at this moment... eventually you will have to let it go as well :)
the giving up, or renunciation, is of, and for, the overcoming of ignorance.
English subtitle:
Life is right now - Jon Kabat-Zinn on Mindfulness
Hier meine Deutsche Übersetzung:
Leben ist gerade jetzt - Jon Kabat-Zinn zu Achtsamkeit, Gewahrsamkeit
(Own Translation
I bow to both of you sirs' generosity!
What does he mean when he says "balances thought out" in the end.
I was watching the video and thinking about how appropriate the background to the video was and I scrolled down a bit and saw.....
The Supermysterious aspects of Chronos.
"one looks at ones watch' 'oh its NOW.
One looks again later,,'oh! its Now!AGAIN!'"
How amazing is The Everexpanding Noninherent Unmoment!
well said
His last point reminds me of something Alan Watts said in 1970. (on UA-cam "Alan Watts breaks down what is wrong with the world" part 1.) There is a thread of Buddhism that I detect. Thanks for posting!!!!
very interesting!
Very interesting and inspiring. Thanks for posting. I will add this in my favourites-list. :-)
Yep whoever said thinking is really important was nuts
Is this Vancouver Burrard St.? :) , You Mr. Zinn, rock by the way!
Yes animals are not as aware as humans and then enlightened humans are a step further.
The background of your video shows all these busy people who need to watch your video! Irony!
You can learn more about online Mindfulness Therapy and training at www.counselingtherapyonline.com.
u should be haqppy for finding it NOW.
This video to be in spanish?
I was a bit distracted by the people and traffic outside the window
Saying that Tolle ripped off Zinn is like saying Zinn ripped off Buddha. Ridiculous statement.. In my opinion, it's just great to be hearing this message from whatever source. the clinical psychological community are coming to a meeting point with 'ancient' eastern philisophical/spiritual teachings. That is good news as we in the West trust science more than anything approaching the 'spiritual'.
N
Good video. I have been reading a book called "The Power of Now" It says basically the same thing you are saying.
what did he say, the traffic distracted me
You made me laff!
wtf at people arguing. why can't you just let each other be? Tolle, or no Tolle, it doesn't matter.
@PCSKAKU You find all these things in most ancient religions, it's not Zen speciaist per se. And I think that's the very thing he's trying to avoid by not mentioning Zen at all - because that's really not the point. It's correct out of the most known modern religions, zen buddism does offer the most direct contact with the water - or consciousness, however, the consciousness and the wonder of life existed long before zen and will also outlive zen if it ever have to.
what about when you have a hamburger?
Same here! Lol
LOL that's funny
