Wagner, thank you very much for this. Had no idea appending a start time to the end of a UA-cam URL could make a recording begin wherever one wanted. Very neat way of organising long talks into segments. Namaste!
What is the point of this? So people can "skip" to exactly what they want to hear? There is something to be said for the "whole" which is made up of the parts. Do we really need a "Google" attitude to protect us from having to hear anything we haven't pre-decided we want to hear? I guess people who need to skip right to 5:04 are not going to bother reading the book Full Catastrophe Living which would change your life -- the teeny sound-bite is not going to change anything. People need to spend time with ideas, not rush to the point at 5:04 and move on at 9:00.
What helped me is to stop trying to control how i feel. And the only way you can do that, is by realizing that you cant control it anyway. If you understand the futility of something, thats when it stops. And if you stop fighting , you have the capacity to sense being again. It is not an emotion but feels very sweet and alive. Live feels fresh and meaningful again.
Agreed! these are the types of things I think should be in the curriculum of every child's school work, every year. it should be a focus. i think it would solve a lot of the worlds problems.
Since COVID last year I started to do yoga. After a year I have my calling to dig more about mindfulness and it brought me here. Thank you so much and so grateful to Dr. Kabat-Zinn
I owe Jon Kabat Zinn a huge debt and I am so grateful. I have been telling all my friends about mindfulness - it has been a huge help and has saved my life. Thank you, Dr Kabat Zinn.
3 years ago you made this video and I appreciate you. I feel deep in the hole and finding it hard to function because of debt and lack of opportunities for me atm. You’re right, depression lies. I will fight. Appreciate you
As far ad I am alive I am deeply grateful to Dr. Kabat-Zinn. In my seminars I am referring to the science of mindfulness which could not have been possible without Dr. Kabat-Zinn's courage and passion. God bless him:)
paying attention on purpose in the present moment non judgmentally …. SO MUCH IN THIS SHORT VIDEO. When I teach mindfulness I show this video to the people learning mindfulness. I love this man. Beautiful teacher.
This is so endearingly profounding that i have to watch it over and over over again to be able to process it!!!!!! May we all awake to this amazing spiritual world and realize what is the actual purpose of our existence
I accept emotional and physical pain so that I can look into it and see what is has to teach me, so that I can then let it go through treating the root causes instead of the symptoms. I am not like a monkey grasping a banana that traps my hand, I am like a quicksilver fish that twists easily free. I trust myself to know how to live. I am patient enough to sit with the moments along my path - to absorb the beauty everywhere, to be still and blissful in the midst of adventure. I think the biggest probelm with mindfulness is that people often believe that the acceptance or letting go part is the same like ignoring problems that are there.
🕊️ Or it means letting the problems “win”. Which is an Ego-based way of thinking, anyway, which always causes suffering. It just means accepting the problems/reality as it is, which makes it easier to work through them, instead of fighting against them. Peace to you, & to me, and to us all. 🕊️
It can be a little catchphrase “just be mindful” Like anything worth doing we have to find out more, investigate and be open enough to reach out to get help
This is the second video am watching for Jon Kabat- Zinn. I knew immediately that this is the person to follow. Thank you source for connecting me to this wise man.
I am fairly new to all this and JKZ makes it all so clear. I have listened to others talk about and teach mindfulness but it all sounded like they were contradicting themselves. I gave up because it was confusing. After hearing JKZ i am drawn back in with greater clarity. 😊
Yes... It's a strange thing, it's the first time I have to watch a guiding video many times... Why do I feel I am attracted to this teaching? I feel the need of listening to it more and more times..!
I am grateful for Jon! for Mindfulness in my life! and to be very lucky to have found the mindful teachers, and was Jon that started this! I love his videos! hes awesome! thanks always Kabat!
Such clarity in his words around each of these attitudes. Letting your "Doing come from your Being" and non-striving has always been the most challenging part of mindfulness for me.
Present moment non-judgement is a huge goal for me. Because it's through constant judgement of others and things that bring disappointment and anxiety. I'd like to let go of that.
You can, even at this point. You may not always feel that you're "non-judging", but like meditation practice taught us, we can always bring our attention back to where we want it to be. Doesn't matter where or how long it has gone to. It's three years already since you've commented and saw this video, and throughout those years, you might've completely forgotten about meditation practice altogether. That's fine, you can bring yourself back to it again. As many times as necessary.
This kind of discernment is like seeing through the emotional self, down one level deeper, and seeing how things really are. You are no longer dragged away by emotional judgements, but discerning and understanding rationally, you know why, you know the relationships between one thing one thought and another, in other words, you sort of understand yourself and things in way not possible when you are driven by your desires and preconceptions, and there is peace and clarity in that.
I discovered that i have perfectionism years ago, i always had big goals, lofty dreams even though i achieved some of them to some degree, i never felt so much peace until you mentioned about the non-striving attitude, which makes me happy even though i had just messed up big time.
My three favorite attitudes are Beginners mind, Non judging, and Acceptance. Being in a beginners mind leaves you with many opportunitys . In this day fall into a cycle, but with beginners mind you are not aware of aware of whats ahead. The second attitude is non judging. Everyone judges regardless of the degree in which we judge. Whats important is being aware of how judgmental we are. The third is Acceptance.Sometimes accepting things is the first step towards growing. Accepting things as they are can help calm your mind, so that you can focus on what you wanna do.
i guess Im randomly asking but does someone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account?? I was dumb lost the account password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me.
@Mohamed Ezequiel i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im trying it out now. I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
Damon, the 9 point summary misses the point. I went from a suicidal severely depressed chronic pain sufferer to a fairly normal person again through my mindfulness practice. JKZ caught the attention of this skeptic with hard science. I had nothing to lose so I tried it. I cannot say that I am in eternal bliss or enlightenment, but I don't want to kill myself anymore. That seems to be a fair reward for spending 30 min a day in meditation.
Was that another thinly veiled threat of hell from a religious person? Very ‘christian’. Which of the thousands of mythological ‘gods’ is the one you believe in? We’re all going the same way when we die whether atheist or not, the same place you were before you were born ie nowhere.
Catherine Correia if we/scientists can’t figure out something (yet), the answer isn’t mythological tales. Religions were created by man to control man, they only maintain their existence by adults indoctrinating children and making them fearful before they can form their own views. Have you ever thought how amazing it is that you happened to be born into a culture/country/family that believes in the god that’s the ‘right’ one, imagine if you were born into one of those religions that worships one of the gods that isn’t, what a fortunate coincidence for you.
Lol, before that watch mindfully your frustration of life. Notice that, knowledge the impermanence, accept it as part of human conditions. I hope you will find more ease when watching the video Have a super great day!!!
What he says about acceptance is so valid. Say to yourself, 'this is mine, it is here and with me in the present', because to deny it is that pink elephant in the room or the emperor's new clothes. Once it is truly embraced, it may be effectively released.
Deeply grateful to have discovered JKZ a few years ago and that was the beginning of my transformation. I continue to learn and share. May all beings everywhere be happy and free from suffering.
When I start to get anxious I try to remember to Trust myself and my body, my experience, my mind, my knowledge....and trust that things are going to work out...as they usually do. Thanks.
I got the *10% Happier Program * which was a good introduction to the practice. When the trial ended. I got the *Sam Harris Waking Program* free trial. Such a difference between the two. 10% was a good introduction to the practice, but I feel Waking Up (WU) goes deeper. 10% seems to skim the surface of meditation where, IMO, it seems that WU’s aim is meditation as a way to fundamentally transform your life by changing the way it’s processed/experienced it on every level. Anybody else compared the two?
Jen D. My reason for wanting meditation in my life is specifically because *I can’t trust myself, my experience, my mind and I certainly CANNOT trust my body and everything will not be ok.* I lost a little of my sight in one eye only to have it return. That led to a was diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. Before that diagnosis I was a regular 22 year old pretty girl about to graduate from college. After diagnosis I gave up on life and threw it all away because I was terrified of the next attack which came when I was about 27. After that I’d have an attack, then get better until I turned 38 and had trouble walking and it’s only gone down from there. On top of that, my future is guaranteed to get progressively worse and it’s really hard just dealing with the present. I saw meditation as the only way to accept this reality. I started/stopped a meditation program for six months, but now I’m committed. So I have meditated for forty days straight. Hopefully this will help me deal with how hard my disability has made doing normal daily activities. Plus dealing with all the regrets I have in the way I’ve dealt with things that permanently made things so much harder on me. At this point, I’ve resigned myself to how hard life is now and how much harder it will become, but at a cost. I miserable, resentful, and so jealous of how my friends/family lives have turned out. And this is the worst thing about me, I wish bad things would happen to other people! And I hate hearing about good news about other people. I do not want to be this person, but I can’t stop thinking these thoughts. I don’t want to think like this, but it just comes out. So I’ll try meditation, it can’t hurt.
