This almost brand new mower wouldn't after storage and the reason was very unexpected. The carb needed some cleaning but unfortunately this engine will never be the same after this. Thanks for watching.

I'd definitely not sink any cash into it,use it as a scrap/parts unit as Alan Marshell said get a decent Briggs motor and sale it. Awesome vid as always. I just recently subbed your channel because one of your videos got my mower and weed eater back to new condition. Now I've been binge watching all your videos. Thank you for all your very informative information on small engine repairs. Keep up the AWESOME work good sir

That really shows the quality control of China. I had to fix up a brand new Yardmax snowblower with an oil leak. As it turns out, the Chinese factory never sealed the engine block correctly. We had to swap out the engine just to fix it

INSIDE HOUSE GARAGE so i opened up the carburetor and it was pretty dirty. the brass tube was almost completely full of build up that you couldn’t see through it. i cleaned it up with the help of carb cleaner and it’s working just fine. so i scored myself a free mower

IMO performing a compression test using the recoil starter is pretty much useless since all 4 cycle engines of this type have a built in compression release. The low psi reading is going to vary from one engine to another when the release is activated making the numbers meaningless. To get an accurate comp test you’d have to spin the crank over with a drill to throw the centrifugal weight out on the cam and bypass the comp release. I kind of doubt that the cylinder walls are scored up but it’s possible (usually it’s the crank bearings that get wiped out first with gas in the oil). I say start it and let it run, see how it reacts. Interesting video, kind of a weird mower!

I know right, and you're right, for a accurate compression test, I needed to use a drill on it.

That low on compression it's never going to run right even with a new carb. I'd slap a good used Briggs on it or a new preditor engine. Great video 👍

I'd buy a new set of piston rings and perhaps a needle & seat kit for it if not a new carburettor.
I mentioned that my 3 horsepower Briggs and Stratton powered push mower was at about 75 PSI before I replaced the piston rings in it,the gap for the compression rings was 1.15mm which was over their 0.80mm reject gap.
It didn't seem to blow very much smoke once warmed up but it was evident on the oil dipstick after 1 hours use & I had to keep adding 200 mLs of oil every time I used it until I replaced the piston rings,it has much more power now but my main concern was oil consumption.
A lot of people keep using them until they can't keep oil up to them !

I'd change the oil and run it to see how it would do. Give it a chance to get hot and limber up. I got into a deal with one of the kids mowers and it got filled up with kerosene. Refilled with gas it did fine and I use a set of cutting torch tip cleaners for carb work. Thanks and GBWYou!

I don’t think that’s low compression I checked my mower I sold and it made 40 psi and ran like a champ. Had another mower engine that made 30 psi and ran good as well. Also another person checked his and it was 40. It ran great. I think the 100 psi ore more is ideal rule applies to 2 cycle engines.

Its usually a needle and seat issue. If not then it's a float problem. Yes you should do something about it. Either replace the carb or install a fuel valve.

Just as for the heck of it
    1). Change oil 16 oz of SAE30.
4oz of engine Restore adding the restore first
    2) for the carburetor try taking it apart and make take the spring loaded needle out and stretch out the spring some. And clean out the seat This might help with the gas leak. It did work in the past on a Kohler for me.
I would be really interested how much more compression you have after the restore is added with sae30. You will not find restore. For small engine in the store, try the 6 cylinder bottle. But only use 4oz of it and 16 oz of oil
But when it comes down to it
This is a Chinese Honda clone.

    • @INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE

  • @johnaldrich2074
    @johnaldrich2074 3 роки тому +1

When looking for a new lawnmower, get one with a Briggs, Kohler, Honda (genuine) , or Kawasaki. Any engine brand that is reliable. Don't settle for a cheap clone/knockoff engine, they're hit and miss. The most common knockoff is PowerMore, it's a Chinese engine brand often found on, MTD mowers. Troy-Bilt, Weed Eater, Craftsman, Yard Machines, YardMan, Bolens, and Huskee, along with some other brands of mower fall victim to these inferior engines. I'm not so sure about Harbor Freight's Predator engines, they are clones too apparently. And beware of an engine that has no brand name on it.
A tip to avoid the lemons.

Ashurii I've used weedeaters since I was a kid and they've always been cheap junk that my mom would buy over and over again (in the late nineties). Then went to buying craftsman trimmers and got similar results (I'm older and can work on the junk but there's a limit to what can be fixed) so me now we have a Stihl and no problems. Still have one, too expensive, 4-stroke craftsman trimmer that works (it has a funny carb that chokes itself and doesn't really like running at anything other than idle or full throttle and you have to wait a second and a half for it to react to a throttle change) but the pull start doesn't engage correctly. It still works so far but I don't have high hopes for it lasting due to previous experiences.

Change the oil, start the engine and run for awhile, then recheck the compression again. Apparently the trashed up needle valve and float couldn't stop the gas from flowing into the oil crankcase. I think the mower should run with at least 65 psig of compression. Maybe tighten down on the cylinder head some. Try stuff, it's a new mower.
