Fasting and Weight Loss - Solving the Two-Compartment problem

  • Why intermittent Fasting is a simple solution for weight loss. Body fat is simply a method of storing food energy. When we eat, our body wants to store those calories. When we don't eat (intermittent fasting), our body uses those calories. So, if we want to lose body fat, increase the duration of time that we are not eating. Check out my blog at / drjasonfung

Especially Avoid the processed seed oils, such as canola, peanut, sunflower, soy, ..the list goes on and on. The few good heart- healthy oils include olive, avocado, and coconut oils. The thing I love most about fasting is that it frees up SO MUCH TIME during my day. When I fast, I am not spending any time shopping or cooking food. I can do other things to get out of the house or distract myself from thoughts about food. Unlike calorie counting, which essentially makes me obsessed with thoughts about food, meal planning, and looking up everything I eat on some app to figure out calories. Fasting is definitely the way to go!

    • @joannathesinger770
      @joannathesinger770 2 роки тому +25

      @@violetwade6528 Apparently you're behind the information curve regarding Intermittent Fasting. You aren't "saving up calories to eat later"...you are not eating for a specific period of time, then eating within a specific window in order to keep your insulin as low as possible during your fasting window. It's ONLY when insulin is low that your body can access its fat stores and utilize them for energy. You can have whatever you'd like to eat within your eating window...but the hormones ghrelin and leptin prevent you from binging during your eating window.
      When you Intermittent Fast, you engage all sorts of healthy behaviors AND can reverse Type 2 diabetes which is epidemic in our society today.

    The biggest obstacle to fasting is that it requires discipline and willpower. Stopping eating is the same as stopping drinking alcohol or stopping smoking. Denying yourself of pleasure is hard. Overeating is a form of addiction.

    crazy story. my dad lost his drivers license 10 Or so years ago because of the diabetes and it wasn't safe for him to drive. he basically pulled a cartman. about 2 years ago at the age of 88 he had quit eating and his alzheimers was reaching a terrible point. we thought he was getting ready to die.
    this spring his doctor declared him cured of diabetes. he is 90 now
    so this week I discovered this lecture series and it answered some things we didn't understand.
    1. 10 years ago he weighed 230lb, he now weighs under 180lb but he has zero sagging skin.
    2. he cured his diabetes
    3. his alzheimers is A typical. he still recognizes us all. he seems to remember the past the best but he can still carry on a conversation, and other things,
    4. the last check on his heart disease found an unusually healthy heart.
    thanks for sharing this, I'm looking forward to greatly increasing his fat intake to see if we can bring him back a bit.
    I myself have started intermittent fast with a keto diet to fix my own diabetes.

    The one thing I've learned about fasting is ...the more you eat, the more you eat. One meal a day is best for me. You make it to dinnr and you r full. Couple hours later u r asleep. Its over. Fill up on decaf hot tea during the day and before you know it's time to leave work

      Your on the right track forward now! Every now and then if I start feeling particularly hungry I will eat two times per day. But that doesn't happen very often. It always best to stay attuned to what our bodies are telling us. Most times it's very easy to keep eating down to OMAD. Here's hoping you're still making great progress!😊

I moved into IF in late June, I’m losing 1-2 pounds a week. Two weeks ago I added walking. I’m up to 1-1/2 miles per day. I have really bad knees and will be getting both knees replaced, but I wanted to get healthy and lose weight prior to surgery. I’m eating 2 meals a day for 3 days, then 1 meal a day for 4 days. I did 1 long fast for 55 hours and just started another long fast today. I’m eating eggs, very large salads of fresh greens, vinaigrette dressing, salmon, tuna, chicken, avocado, kale, nuts. I agree with those calling for Dr. Fung to receive a Nobel Prize. Rarely in today's healthcare do you have a doctor advise you with cutting-edge (thousands of years old) diet modifications that actually work. Not only that but it's balanced. You can still enjoy an occasional this or that, which is what makes dietary changes so hard long term. Dr. Fung, thank you for putting your patients first and spreading the message that we can and will impact our own health. You are saving me from a life of diabetes and I couldn't be more grateful!

Although Dr, Fung speaks in a casual manager, but there is a lot of information in it, especially when he talks about lowering insulin.

    Dear Dr. Fung. I've studied your work for about a year and a half before I self-experimented on water fasting. I started with a few short; 3, 5, and 7 day water fast, before going for my ultimate goal, of a 40 day water fast. I thought it would be interesting, to check my blood glucose, twice per day and my blood keytones once per day. I was shocked by my results. My blood glucose never went higher than 96 and no lower than 64 on my blood glucose meter. My blood ketone went as high as 7.4 and simply went back and forth, not going lower than 4.0. Sadly, I only was able to make it to the 36th day of my water fast, due to the most extreme nausea I've ever had in my 51 years of my life, due to contracting COVID-19 from a family member. I broke my water fast with some chicken bone broth. I ended up being hospitalized from COVID-19
    Not once was I hungry after the 7th day without food. I lost 48 pounds in the 36 day water fast, and I know, with 100% certainty, I would have gone the remaining 4 days, to fulfill my water fast goal of 40 days, had I not gotten extremely ill. I know water fasting works! Thank you Dr. Fung!

As a doctor who also struggled with weight and metabolic syndrome, I would usually tell my patients that you can’t cure hypertension or diabetes easily or even at all; but after reading his book, I realized a lot of the teachings were based on convenience, commerce and a culture that sustains pharmaceutical companies, not the actual science. I reversed high blood pressure and worsening obesity without any drugs and achieved a high HDL (good) cholesterol for the first time in a decade. I started IF back in 2012 and do it daily between 16-20 hours. This technique has probably had one of the most profound effect on my health. Combine it was exercise and it is extremely potent. Lost around 20kg, feeling great and have never looked back.

      TheNovelty8theory nice to hear . I did IF for 4 months and lost 10 kg and was hitting the weights on a fasted state and felt great , heaps energy . I ate between 4 pm to 10 pm but recently I started getting stomach aches and as it's turned out mr doctor says I have an ulcer so I'm disappointed that he told me to eat more regularly to absorb the stomach acids and now I've gone off my IF and I feel terrible so why do u think this happened , I'm wondering if there is a correlation between fasting and ulcers . Also I'm trying to find out if I can keep fasting even with an ulcer . Any suggestions would b appreciated thx

      @TheNovelty8theory 7 років тому +3

      intermittentmaniac strange that, would have thought fasting was a way to reduce stomach acid and actually allow the ulcer to heal more effectively, like a rest period for the digestive system. What was your diet like while doing IF? Could this have been a cause?

    • @faismasterx
      @faismasterx 7 років тому

      Might be your diet that's causing the stomach ulcers. What kinds of food do you eat?

      May be related to the late hours you were eating? Did you eat up till 10 pm then go to sleep? That will give you acid reflux. It might promote acid production.

    After trying IF cut sugar and carbs
    I lost 16kg in 2 months... Now I sleep all night, I have more energy, I don't crave sugar (I was a sugar and chips addict all my life), when I eat I don't feel hungry anymore...
    God Bless you Dr. Fung 🙏🏽

    God bless Dr. Fung. I have had Type 2 diabetes for about 10 years. Was up to 3 different oral meds and my blood sugar kept going up over time. I've been fasting and eliminating sugar/carbs for a little over a month and i've lost weight and my blood sugar has gone way down. I have stopped taking glipizide and Januvia and am now only on Metformin. My morning blood sugar is consistently under 100. Simply amazing My sugars are better than anytime in the last 10 years.

      Keep consistently doing intermittent fasting and keeping your carbs low and very soon you can say 'bye-bye' to metformin as well!! Drugs should only be used as a last ditch effort, when Nothing else will work. Or for a very short period, until your own health-building nutritional lifestyle has a chance to heal your body on its own!😉

    It could be the most important video on UA-cam.
    I fasted all Monday and even did a 30 mile cycle ride. Today I'll eat normally. Thursday I'll fast again.
    It's taken a week but my body is now happy to burn fat without feeling any hunger-craving.
    You just need to get over that first week or two, when your body is screaming for carbs. It will stop, trust me (& Jason).
    If I just reduce calories slightly then my body never stops screaming for carbs.

      Bodybuilders are the leanest specimens on the planet and they get that way by reducing calories and increasing exercise, even the natural ones follow this protocol. Fung is wrong on this one big time, both methods are efficient tho fasting definitely yields far more health benefit.
