Hello all. This is the original complete recording of the Sonata the way it was meant to be. Back in those days there was a 10 minutes file limit and therefore I had to split performance in 5 parts. Playlist does not work in the opposite way and there are hundreds of channels that stole my recording and rebroadcast it in full. So I should post it the way it was meant originally. Enjoy! I think when performed complete the concept of the performance is different.
Hello from Poland... The tempo is blindingly fast. The touch is delicate, but fierce. She hammers at the keys, but never too hard. The utter balance of her playing style lends itself to Beethoven’s works so very well. They demand so many different emotions, and she is able to bring them all out when she needs to, and then in the next breath is able to delicately play the lightest of musics...but where she truly excels is when she has free reign to play as fast and as powerfully as she can get away with, and then the true zest for the music comes out. I am so glad I live in an age where I can just watch a world class pianist perform a legendary piece of music instantly...as many times as I like...at any time I like...truly we should all take a moment to be grateful for the lives we live.

Somehow it does make the rental for the internet time seem trivial. My piano studies would have been greatly stimulated were this glorious wonder been available in the 1950's.
It’s weird to think that Beethoven and Liszt were the first 2 people to ever play this piece, but now we have dozens of recordings we can listen to at our leisure
Beethoven never played this. Publicly at least. Also, he was very deaf by the time he wrote this so I doubt Beethoven would be able to play it at all. Most likely in his head though
Back in those days I imagine you would have been very lucky or very rich to hear it played
@@lolsup9817 he could probably play it part, definitely not in full, and probably not with technical ease like modern pianists. Even still I wish I could hear Beethoven play even 1 measure of this!
@@ryanguerra2024 of course. The only problem with Beethovens music is that he himself requires a very sophisticated sense of touch. Even Beethoven himself admitted he stopped performing because he couldn’t tell how his musicality was and found that he played way too forte. This is probably why Beethoven embraced using percussion much more in his mid to late years. Wonderfully enough giving his unique style. Also his use of the highest and lowest registers of the piano probably being due to his deafness and range of hearing as well. I did a project on his deafness recently so this is how I know this
@@lolsup9817 Of course Beethoven could play it. He wrote it. I don't see a reason why he wouldn't be able to play his own composition or any other composition for that matter. Maybe not publicly though.

You can feel the desperation for making every note louder. You can feel the sadness, depression and the anger.
Beethoven hammering on the piano so he could listen to his own work, in a depressive period of his life where he thought he needed to listen to the notes.

yes it's just heartwrenching! your comment made me burst into tears. but i love that he also threw in a few hilarious sort of f-yous, like the fugue theme in the 4th movement which would make monty python and lenny bruce both fall to their knees in admiration, and my favorite--i don't even know what to call that part at 12:10? 'wait, i have to untangle my fingers'? 'whoa, where was i, i was getting carried away, arrgghh, have to clear my mind and get back to the themes'? 'I've had it with you piano fortes who can't produce a big enough sound, i'm just going to pound for a couple of seconds before I get back to the piece!'? 'grrrrrr, i need to hear SOMETHING'?
You Know that this is not the reason that this sonata is called Hammerklavier, don't you?
@Konstantin Ridaya exactly. You are completely right. Even because this piece has more pianissimo than fortissimo.
This sonata (Opus 106) along with the preceding sonata (Opus 101) were both titled for the "Grosse HAMMERKLAVIER" indicating that they were not to played on harpsichord, but on the pianoforte, or hammerklavier in German.

I have collected the Beethoven's sonatas since late 90s and by now I might have these for over 400 performers, bigger part of them playing the complete cycle. The 'Hammerklavier' is my personal favourite for many reasons. I can say for sure that the first time I heard Lisitsa's playing the Hammerklavier, I listened to that many times in a row and I found that steadiness, bravery and expression I've never heard before. I'm pretty sure that this one of the best performances of Hammerklavier I've ever heard.
I’m in complete agreement, and I’m loving that I’m seeing other comments like this confirming that they too believe this to be the greatest performance of this piece ever. It’s astonishing when played at this level of clarity and tempo and dynamics. I’m amazed by her talent.

the great tragedy of any artist is to never know what your art means for people of the future. I'm sure with all the recognition Beethoven got, he'd never imagine he'd be considered one of the top composers of all time and probably the most Famous (maybe Mozart). and yet, he had died, his body has turned to nothing and the worms have eaten his flesh, and yet he lives on, i can feel him now, and its glorious. what a mind. what an artist.

If my piano teacher had lived to witness the Internet and UA-cam, she probably would have told me to turn the sound off and just watch her hands for at least one rendition. They are just spectacular, and overall Valentina is a joy to just watch her perform, let alone hear. This was awesome.

Yes, Valentina has photographic memory: about 6k she knows by heart!!!!
This is one of the most common pianist problems. I need like 2 months to memorize large pieces while grand pianists learn them in a week...

I can’t get over how loose your hands look! I want my hand to be that relaxed. I can’t only imagine how it feels to play with such fluidity and liberty.

Her voicing and fluidity is incredible. The effortless, relaxed demeanor is how it should look if one has mastered whatever piece is being performed. If one looks strained, it is a sign they did not take adequate time to really know how each note sounds and feels. I struggle with this in my own playing. I have only come close to such a demeanor in a few pieces, none of which were nearly as difficult as Beethoven's 29.

One of the many things I can't forgive this pandemic for is delaying my opportunity to listen to this sonata played by you a second time. You have displayed such spectacular improvement in all the sonatas you had already played before, which leads me to believe your Hammerklavier will be even greater yet. Words cannot describe how much I long to hear it!
Valentina Lisitsa is the greatest pianist I have ever heard in all my 71 years. And in addition, she is a beautiful woman. And I have heard most of the great pianists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Even including Rubinstein, Horowitz, and so many others. I have never ever heard anyone who plays Beethoven like she does!!

It's meant to last for only about 30 minutes. But that tempo is ridiculously hard, especially for the 1st and 4th movement, so hard in fact that I don't think it's even possible to play the piece at that tempo.
It's taken me 72 years more or less but I've finally fallen in love with Opus 106. And what a performance! The scales have fallen from my eyes. (And the trills they rattle my brain.)

Fantastic performance, but what I can't get over is the technical side of this, especially for the 1st and 4th movements, its just unbelievable how consistent and how accurate each note is

The first time I watched this video long ago, I was only familiar with the first movement. I instantly loved the third movement; it is so beautiful. But the fourth movement made no sense. ‘What on earth are you doing, Beethoven? This is terrible!’ I thought. But since I loved the rest of the sonata, I also listened to the fourth movement several times, and then suddenly I understood it: It’s Bach, Extended Version! Now I actually listen to the fourth movement over and over. It’s like it opened up a new place in my brain. Wonderful performance, too!

Your mighty fingers, like you said in an interview, mighty black stallion - left hand - and mighty white horse, right hand... are amazing. Timing, tempo, from soft pauses to great cadences to full out runs... you are using His gifts - you are definitely not competing for a medal, as you said in an interview, but you're using your beautiful imagination connected with inspired music... to display God's love for you!

Valentina, your interpretation of this masterpiece has a deep poetic brilliance to it. The 1st movement’s massive landscape, you play with nuance and passion; the 2nd movement lilting lightness, yet still poignancy, and the 3rd, I found myself moved to tears, heartbreaking beauty and tragedy of the Adagio. The final prodigious intensity of the fugue, it is as if you were guided by Beethoven himself. You are truly the best of our times. ❤️
This isn't easy music -even for the listener (and understatement for sure) but having listened now to a number of great interpretations -Ashkenazy, Schiff, even the ponderous half-speed interpretations of Gould -and slower, I think this may just be the best. Valentina really seems to get to the heart of this often inaccessible masterwork. Beethoven truly poured his heart and soul and supreme musical intelect into this music, but never intended to give his audience an easy ride!!!
If there was room just for a single piano work, it should be the Hammerklavier.
Beethoven actually talks with God.
And Valentina plays out of this world... thank you!

This is good indeed. After hearing this wonderful sonata many times by various pianists this remains fresh and clear. All surely would like to hear Franz Liszt's performance of the sonata about eighteen years after it was written and nine years after Beethovens death. There were not many pianists who would play it.

Wow! Beautiful hands that are strong and supple. This is real quality. Superb opening sets the bar high and strong line right through the piece to the epic finish -so helpful for listeners like me. The connoisseurs rate Solomon Cutner's 1956 recording of this piece very highly, and I think Valentina Lisitsa is at those heights of achievement. Thank you so much for sharing this recording which I hope to watch for years to come.

wow the introduction to the last movement for once really does sound like an improvisation. i have never heard the passage after the trills in the bass played that way before. such an impressive performance as usual Ms Lisitsa.

Desde el minuto 19:50 empieza mi parte favorita de toda la pieza, al escucharla me sorprendo a mi mismo ahogado, me transmite no solo delicadeza y belleza, sino tambien melancolia y un profundo sentido de perdida.
Tambien te agradezco mucho haber subido toda la pieza en un solo video, ya he visto tus videos fragmentados de esta pieza al menos 300 veces desde hace varios años jeje
pienso igual, cada vez que la escucho siento que es la única música muestra la humanidad en todo su esplendor, sin ninguna intención, sino solo expresión. Pero más me gusta la versión de richter o de baremboim ya que el es bueno para las secciones lentas y richter es bueno en todo. Al fin el vídeo completo, ya van años que lo esperaba XD

I collect old 78rpm records, and among my favourites are the old Cortot, Rubinstein, the two Schnabels, Paderewski, etc... To me you seem to enclose inside your blond head and your big and warm heart just the best of all them.
