'Travellers' are Irish people who once travelled around Ireland. Recent DNA studies report they are no different to the 'settled population' of Irish people and they are NOT related to Romanian gypsy's etc. It was just once a way of life for Irish people who preferred to travel around Ireland looking for work etc. However they soon became a clan of people with their own quirks and in which the settled population took a dislike too, because of their apparent lose morals in regards to stealing and drunk-ness and parking up on private land etc. All the same what the settled population often forgot and still forget is that amongst them they've their own fair share of robbers and drunks by a country mile in comparison !!!! Irish 'travellers' are wholly Irish and should be embraced as such.

I dont tell people I'm a traveller straightaway when I meet them. This is out of a fear of discrimination. If there were more people (especially in Ireland) who were willing to at least hear travellers out and give them a chance, we would all feel better. There are good travellers out there. I do recognise that there are groups of travellers who commit crime for a living though. These travellers give the rest of us a bad name. All I would ask is that people recognise that there is a majority of good travellers out there. Those who commit crime for a living should be put where they belong-prison. It's because to the settled population the Travellers that they most often come into contact with are the ones who are robbing and thieving and who see scamming old people out of their savings as a way of life. I know some lovely Travellers who live on sites but they go out and work hard and don't let people know they're Travellers for the reasons you've just stated so all people see is the bad. I once tried to challenge my prejudice and bought a car from a traveller run 2nd hand car place. The car was broken within a week no refund available. I can’t believe how brave travellers are when 3 of them that where camped on the local football field/ kids play area with multiple other travellers and decided to tear up the field in a van and when my 73 year old farther asked them to stop they threatened him and told him to mind his own business. Well it was his business he and many other people pay taxes for parks and other nice places for them to camp and crap up the place. Before this I didn’t mind travellers but now I see them for what they are. Three men against one 73 year old wow you are really brave o and it cost the tax payer 45k to clean up after you all and the council workers had to clean up human crap from the tree line because you won’t use a toilet.

I’m sure there do exist some travelers that go to college, but every traveler I’ve ever known has been kinda dumb, dropped out of school, no job, stole something from me, extremely rude and very uncaring about the well-being of others. Every single one. I have met intelligent respectable black/white/brown people but not a single traveler. I went to primary school with travelers. The only traveler that wasn’t in the special class was someone I tried to be friends with. I found her funny and she was below average in school but not as bad as an average traveler. Anyways, long story short, she kept stealing from me. Even the most respectable traveler I knew stole from me and lied about it when questioned by a teacher with proof. I do judge people by their personality and if there was a traveler who made it to uni I’d 100% like to be friends with them. However, I’d never respect anyone who was that rude or that uneducated no matter what race they are.

Travellers are not a race, they’re just some people who don’t settle and have no permanent house. When they have sons and daughters they never settle either.
I obviously understand your point and broadly agree but it's important to consider that no people are a "race". The idea of race is a fiction, one that could be argued (but still not correct) in an era before sea faring boats were invented. In the animal kingdom if a population of animals is isolated for long enough an evolves enough unique characteristics, eventually they have problems interbreeding. At that point they are considered distinct species. Every human in the world can interbreed with another from any part of the world no matter the colour of their skin, height or size of their nose. Meaning we are the same species. Our ancestors apparently even ocassionally sucessfully interbred with Neanderthals which were a separate species. In the animal kingdom we never ever apply the term "race" to animals, not to subdivide a species. And species is the very smallest subdivision, of eight. A black, ginger and white cat are all the same species. There really really isn't any such thing as race and that isn't an idealistic platitude. What differentiates people is ethnicity. And ethnicity is a composite where physical traits / "genes" form only a portion. Ethnicity is also made up of cultural identity, regional customs, diet, clothing, religion, language, and even nationality and political affiliations. The travellers of the British/Irish isles can be correctly labelled as an ethnic group. They have no physical traits to distinguish them from rest of the population but they have a long established and strict lineage of behaviour, customs and group identity. Things which radically differ from the rest of the population. There is more similarity culturally between British Muslims with a South Asian heritage or British Christians with a Nigerian heritage and the broad white native population than there is between travellers and the broad population. Tell me who fits in more as a "normal" and accepted British person out of Anthony Joshua or one of the 12 year old traveller driveway/generator/sofa salesmen who left school at 10 and will be married in a couple years? As an ethnic group they definitely can and do face discrimination. In Nazi Germany half a million Romani Gypsies were exterminated. Even in the UK racism against the Irish was as extreme as racism against black people up until 1980s. And travellers fall "below" Irish in the eyes of the broad population still, because they keep separate and mostly only known for negative reasons.

It's not for me to say if this joke is offensive but I do find it slightly funny. Travellers are a distinct ethnic group and as such experience huge levels of prejudice and discrimination. There is criminality in all ethnic groups but people should be seen as individuals and not judged on the behavior of other members of their ethnic group. To judge people by virtue of their ethnicity is racial prejudice. I don't think Tommy Tiernan is a person who is prejudiced. He takes risks with his humour and is indiscriminate about who he offends. He seems to be in favour of equal opportunities offensivess! I love his humour and his humanity. I don't appreciate entire groups being characteristised by the behaviour of some of their members. I was reading tarot cards in London and was approached by two different traveller women at different times and they looked white but they were also pretty intimadating. Wanted me to read their cards. I knew I better be on my toes. Then a man who told me If you can see them, they can see you. Meaning spirits. Then a boy who wanted to run away from the travellers and asked me to read his cards and he had no.money. I did because he had a kind attitude. But they just looked Irish to me.

Recent DNA studies report they are no different to the 'settled population' of Irish people and they are NOT related to Romanian gypsy's etc. It was just once a way of life for Irish people who preferred to travel around Ireland looking for work etc. However they soon became a clan of people with their own quirks and in which the settled population took a dislike too, because of their apparent lose morals in regards to stealing and drunk-ness and parking up on private land etc.
All the same what the settled population often forgot and still forget is that amongst them they've their own fair share of robbers and drunks by a country mile in comparison !!!!

I can’t believe how brave travellers are when 3 of them that where camped on the local football field/ kids play area with multiple other travellers and decided to tear up the field in a van and when my 73 year old farther asked them to stop they threatened him and told him to mind his own business. Well it was his business he and many other people pay taxes for parks and other nice places for them to camp and crap up the place. Before this I didn’t mind travellers but now I see them for what they are. I’m sure there do exist some travelers that go to college, but every traveler I’ve ever known has been kinda dumb, dropped out of school, no job, stole something from me, extremely rude and very uncaring about the well-being of others. The only traveler that wasn’t in the special class was someone I tried to be friends with. I found her funny and she was below average in school but not as bad as an average traveler. Travellers are not a race, they’re just some people who don’t settle and have no permanent house. When they have sons and daughters they never settle either.
I obviously understand your point and broadly agree but it's important to consider that no people are a "race". The idea of race is a fiction, one that could be argued (but still not correct) in an era before sea faring boats were invented.
In the animal kingdom if a population of animals is isolated for long enough an evolves enough unique characteristics, eventually they have problems interbreeding. At that point they are considered distinct species.
Every human in the world can interbreed with another from any part of the world no matter the colour of their skin, height or size of their nose. Meaning we are the same species. Our ancestors apparently even ocassionally sucessfully interbred with Neanderthals which were a separate species.
In the animal kingdom we never ever apply the term "race" to animals, not to subdivide a species. And species is the very smallest subdivision, of eight. A black, ginger and white cat are all the same species.
There really really isn't any such thing as race and that isn't an idealistic platitude.
What differentiates people is ethnicity. And ethnicity is a composite where physical traits / "genes" form only a portion. Ethnicity is also made up of cultural identity, regional customs, diet, clothing, religion, language, and even nationality and political affiliations.
The travellers of the British/Irish isles can be correctly labelled as an ethnic group. They have no physical traits to distinguish them from rest of the population but they have a long established and strict lineage of behaviour, customs and group identity.
Things which radically differ from the rest of the population.
There is more similarity culturally between British Muslims with a South Asian heritage or British Christians with a Nigerian heritage and the broad white native population than there is between travellers and the broad population. Tell me who fits in more as a "normal" and accepted British person out of Anthony Joshua or one of the 12 year old traveller driveway/generator/sofa salesmen who left school at 10 and will be married in a couple years?
As an ethnic group they definitely can and do face discrimination.

Travellers are a distinct ethnic group and as such experience huge levels of prejudice and discrimination. There is criminality in all ethnic groups but people should be seen as individuals and not judged on the behavior of other members of their ethnic group. To judge people by virtue of their ethnicity is racial prejudice.

I was reading tarot cards in London and was approached by two different traveller women at different times and they looked white but they were also pretty intimadating. Wanted me to read their cards. I knew I better be on my toes. Then a man who told me If you can see them, they can see you. Meaning spirits.
