Just to make sure....the "flesh" side that you are applying glue to is the side that (if it was a belt) faces your pants, as opposed to the hair side that faces out? I've seen some strop-making videos where some use either side of the leather interchangeably. So, in a bit confused as to which side faces out and which side gets glued. I have a lot of leather belt material laying around that I never got around to tooling and carving.
Yes, the flesh side is on the inside. Sometimes it's referred to as the suede side. The outside is often referred to as the grain side, or the face side. The inner flesh side is easy to apply polishing compound to, however it is softer and therefore tends to round the edge of the blade faster. This is why I tend to roughen the firmer grain side and use that as a base for the polishing compound.
Thank you. It's a Joseph Dixon saddlers hammer. One of the last to leave the factory before it closed. You can find them from time to time on eBay. The turned edge wrap was my own addition.
I think they make nice strops for straight razors that don't use added polishing compound, but I doubt your craft knife will appreciate the difference. Once you add compound, the medium underneath matters less.
The jacket will be chrome tanned leather, which is a little too soft and can cause accelerated rounding of the blade's edge. I recommend veg-tan leather, or at worst thick card.
OLD Leather Smith here, very good, excellent 4 beginners, I go 2 the paint store or big box or hardware and ask 4 paint steur stick, drill a hole in the handle so U can hang it on the side of your bench works great 4 stropping. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃
Before I watch- 60min project? I’d love to know why randomly picking up a scrap of wood from your immediate surroundings and contact cementing it to some sacrificial leather, then cutting it out and rouging it takes 60 minutes
Similar to when you tell the Mrs you're going to 'make love all night' Michael. Sometimes we overestimate the time it takes to get the job done ;) Realistically, 60 minutes should suffice for people of all abilities, not everybody finishes early :D
I’m guessing- vain customizations or this is for the exceedingly small population that can’t find a piece of 2x4 or any hand sized piece of lumber….- play
Excellent video! For anyone who doesnt have the rubber laying around, some of that rug padding works in a pinch
Great tip!
Every time I watch one of these videos I'm impressed. I'm making one of these tomorrow thank you
Thank you Daniel. Enjoy the project, it's a fun one! 👍
Yes. Very video!👍👍👍
Thank you very much!

Where is your hammer from? It's such a nice looking hammer

Hi Philip
What are your thoughts on shell cordovan strops?
I'm about 10 minutes into the video so apologies if you cover this.

I truly love your work, please tell me what is the name of the "green thing" you using to charge up the leather side with?
That's polishing compound. Mine is 'Vert De Paris', it's sold worldwide.
Thank you this was very helpful. How do you sharpen your edge bevelers?
Good stuff cheers
Thanks Alan! Enjoy the project 👍
The only leather I’ve got available is from a leather jacket I’ve deconstructed..will it be thick enough or can I double it up by glueing together etc
The jacket will be chrome tanned leather, which is a little too soft and can cause accelerated rounding of the blade's edge. I recommend veg-tan leather, or at worst thick card.
Is that Delrin Sheet... The black table top?
Similar, Acetal.

Thank you for sharing that James!
What kind of rubber 2 ask 4 @ hardware store?
Flooring
Hi Phil, thanks for the lesson. Would you suggest using Tung oil for hardening the leather ?
Probably not for this, no. I'd recommend that for a larger strop used for skiving knives.
Maybe I missed it, but what's the paper grit? 1200?
That's correct, 1200 grit
Greetings! Who made your rougher?

Indeed, I eventually managed to find this one under my pillow! The lumber fairy exchanged it for a matchstick :D
Good to hear she was gentle with you, the lumber fairy just dropped an oak shed door on my head and left
Greetings from Dagestan. It's a pity I don't know much English. But I teach. And I will communicate with good masters not from Russia.
Thanks for watching Murtazov! 👍
