Pt 1 was 2013 (RM & Jhope were 19, Suga 20) Pt 2 was 2014 Pt 3 was later 2014 Pt 4 was 2016 You can definitely hear their growth with each one!! It’s crazy how hard they work to grow and get better.
@@mintermelon they probably had some of their lines in their arsenal for some time, i don't think they've ever disclosed when exactly each cypher was written tho
@@afreepotatochip8765 arsenal ㅋㅋㅋㅋ anyway yeah, i dont remember any mentions of when the cyphers (even at least the earlier ones) were written, and when he raised the question suddenly i got curious too.. for all we know pt1 could be written pre-debut or what so just by thinking abt how he (gameboyy) highlighted the thing abt their growth is putting me in a proud bestie stance
I think you might have missed it but my favourite line in Cypher Pt 2 is RM’s “This is a kingdom, I’m king, you’re dumb” like KING-DOM. KING-DUMB. Genius.
I LOVE THIS ONE bc u gotta be bilingual to get it. like u gotta be able to translate wangguk to kingdom in ur head for the second part to click his mind is too big
Hong Gil-dong is a hero of a famous classic Korean novel who could not call his father as "father" bc he was an illegitimate child. thats why RM mentioned Hong Gil-dong when he said "they see good thing but they can't call it good" + for rm's verse in Cypher pt2 (if your not Korean, this will be kinda hard to understand) Just do the "chun" because you have no "shil" ㄴfor this verse "chun" has two meaning. 1."chun" means "cloth" 2. "do chun"(천해) means you have a low status "shil" also has two meanings. 1. "shil" means "thread" 2. "no shil"(실없어) means your pointless I'll push you out because I really don't like you ㄴ in Korean these words ryme with "chun" and "shil" !! I'm good at sewing, putting it into practice ㄴhe's talking about sewing bc of the "thread" and "cloth" putting into practice in Korean is "shil-chun"(실천) Just do the "yeon," like I said, you have no "shil" ㄴ "yeon" means kite Rise and rise to the sky but get ripped, bucket, I've forgotten you ㄴ a kite without "shil"(thread) gets up in the sky and ends up ripped in pieces sorry for my poor English...if you want any more parts to be translated, just leave it in the comments! it was a shame that there wasn't any videos that explained all this to foreigners
The "chun" - " shil" and "yeon" - "shil" bits rarely get translated at all, though I think doolset has notes on them? Thank you for this comment to explain things!
I'll stop commenting after this last observation: J-Hope started learning how to rap alongside RM and Suga, years later than them. I think it shows in those early cyphers, he hadn't found his style 100% just yet. Which makes his present skills all the more amazing, he worked hard to get to where he is. It's not an easy feat to come in as a dancer and manage to get on an even level with rappers like RM and Suga you know? And yet it's undeniable now that he is up there. I'm just really proud of him haha.
I'm really proud of him too, but let's be honest here, J-Hope never worked up to RM and Suga. He had the same progression as everyone else in the group. This was something that just came naturally to him. JK gets way more respect as the golden maknae than Hobi does as the golden hyung and, as far as I'm concerned, Hobi is a better singer than JK is a rapper. Hobi isn't my bias but come on, this dude is a trump card. There is a reactor that I watch who has said "if I never know who it is, I know it's Hobi". We need to love on our sunshine more.
J-hope himself said that Suga worked with him directly to teach him rap skills. Many rappers trained at the same time, but Suga saw something in J-hope worth nurturing. I'm proud of them all since each had to humble himself to not dominate and allow the others space to grow. That's the secret to BTS success, the stronger members never attempt to ball hog. I hope they can survive the solo career wars, when fans unleash foolishness to elevate their favs. Time will tell.
So many reactors stop the video before Yoongi's laugh at the end and I get so sad. His laugh is the perfect ending to the song. Thank you for not skipping it 😭💜
@@Yunkikihihi I was also going to suggest Busan until I realized that they were mostly fancams with terrible sound, or films people made of the theater release.
I have mad respect for anyone who can work the word "hegemony" into normal conversation, much less into his flow. And the way that man just breezes back and forth between English and Korean and gives us DUAL-LANGUAGE wordplay is just... daaaaaamn.
For the cyphers I suggest you still consult doolset since they explain all the references you wouldn't be able to get otherwise. The first cypher was apart from their second album "O!RUL8,2?" that came out in the latter half of 2013, just a few months after their debut that happened in June. Second cypher pt 2 is from their 3 album that came right after the previous one. It's a mini album "Skool Luv Affair" and it came out early 2014. I'll tell you about the rest in their respective videos. Through the cyphers specifically you can REALLY see their growth and what they went through, what they struggled with at the time. FYI J-Hope performed his cypher pt 1 verse at his Lollapalooza stage last year so this is another reason you should check it out, I promise you it is legendary. P.S. You have missed a lot of stuff, which I don't blame you, but please check out the doolset lyrics. You can thank me later.
yess I second this!! no matter how well translated videos are, context is important to understand the whole thing (especially for diss-tracks, where they talk about specific instances)
like after discovering dollset my admiration for them only grew... look at what doolset wrote about ONE verse in cypher pt2: 너넨 그냥 긴수염, 한 마디로 메기여 You guys are just long beards, catfish in one word (1) Rhyme: 흰 수염 (heuin sooyeom; white beard) - 긴 수염 (gin sooyeom; long beard) (2) Metaphor: 메기 (megi; catfish), known for its flattened head prominent barbels that resemble a cat’s whiskers, is often used as a metaphor for an ugly person. (3) Wordplay: 한 마디로 메기여 (han madiro megiyeo) means “it’s catfish, to put it in one word.” But it also sounds similar to “한 마디로 멕여 (han madiro megyeo)” where 멕여 is a misspell (slang) of 먹여, which in the context means to strike a blow, to trick someone, or to screw someone over. So it also can be “I’m Whitebeard, you guys are just long beards. I screw you over with one word.” link: doolsetbangtan.wordpress.com/2019/05/14/bts-cypher-pt-2-triptych/
The biggest thing that happened between the first 2 cyphers was B Free opening his dumb mouth and mocking SUGA and RM at an event meant to celebrate them. They were very angry when they wrote Cypher pt 2 and their verses are directed at him (he’s from Hawaii, thus the reference in SUGA’s verse).
Fun facts this Cypher was totally about BFree (one of the main and worst instigators) who heckled RM and Suga and harassed them for sampling a Kanye song, asked who they thought they were, proceeded to call Suga, sugar (implying he was sweet) and called them girls for wearing makeup on stage, as if performers don’t🙄. Anyhoo the rest of the panelists apologized but he refused to apologize and dissed Chairman Bang when he reached out to him. He also dissed ARMY but came back crying years later after a period was put on his career’s artery lol. Yoongi enunciation of Hawaii is funny because he was telling BFree to go home to Hawaii where he is from. BFree also had a superiority complex about that fact but BTS was like nahh we local boys will show you. You can Watch about BFree’s adventures. The last time we heard from him, he was coming out of prison after serving time for harming another rapper. He was really out there having an east coast - West coast feud by himself. In a nutshell he was told go go home to Hawaii 💀.
Cypher 2 is what got me back into rap. I will be 70 this year and I am up jamming and grooving to this reaction in the early 6am. I've listened to all the cyphers over 10 times and I never get tired either. The Rap Line got me dead up into P. Cole. All the Rap OGS, BTS, and J. Cole got me traveling down the rabbit hole. 💜×7
"Pride" was a Korean subcompact Korean car, The Kia Pride. RM said if you're a Kia Pride, then he's a Chrysler which is a bigger better car. He goes on to say he's priceless.
I think it's worth mentioning that Suga and RM were underground rappers before they became idols. People were AFRAID to go against RM, and he was like, 13
RM: (poet rap) explains why you're shit Suga: (fast rap) tells you, you are shit JHope: (flow rap) will tell you it's okay to be shit how ARMY differentiates rap line be like XD💜
Part 2: best bars. Part 4: best vibes (and beat). Also there's a clear progression. After part 4 and Ddaeng they stop addressing their haters and instead put the fork in hate itself with UGH. This makes sense because they got so big that it's not nice punching down on losers.
There's a specific person who they really targeted on Cypher 2 which is why I love it so much. His name is B-Free and there is a video of him where he constantly attacked the members for being an idol calling them fake rappers right in front of their faces. And that person is from Hawaii that's why Suga put that in their. Crazy. 😂 You can google the english translation of this and some would have explanations on each lines what the reasons behind it. Keep it coming!! I always wait for your videos! ❤
There's a live version of Pt.2 Pt.3 & Pt.4 They performed Cypher Pt.3 most recently (last year) and jhope completely switched up his verse! So check out the original first! Enjoy!
Cpyher 1: 2013 with their 2nd mini album O!RUL8,2? Cypher 2: 2014 (Skool Luv Affair 3rd Minialbum) Cypher 3: 2014 (Dark & Wild 1st full album) Cypher 4: 2016 (WINGS 2nd full album) I love the cyphers because, as you stated, you can see their progress more and more.
There’s a back story to all the anger. Rm and Suga were underground rappers before coming into BTS- rm had a reputation to proceed him bc his lyrics were unreal. Once they left the underground scene to become “kpop rappers” the other rappers in the underground scene would throw shade basically stating that they sold out. And because big hit was on the verge of bankruptcy when BTS debuted all 7 members of BTS had to prove themselves. Even now, they’re on the top. When people think kpop they think BTS. BTS still act like they need to prove themselves. It’s their humbleness. You can tell from indigo & D-2(which I don’t think you’ve listened to yet) that they’ve gone from the angst and anger they’ve had. D-day drops in 2 days and this will be the last installment for the Agust D moniker - suga found healing through that. I’m excited for you to listen to more. Because all 7 of them are amazing. Once you get a chance there is the MTV unplugged where they did a cover of fix you by Coldplay. Absolutely beautiful, shows a different side of them as a group. I think you’d enjoy it
I'm not joking when I say I literally dropped everything to watch this. Nearly tripped trying to get to this as fast as possible 😂 Wow the Cyphers....you're in for a treat! (+) Oh ps, enjoy your trip out of town. Return safely, thanks for the reaction! 💜
You’re literally the the most realest reactioner ever. You don’t beat around the bush and you’re not afraid to say your opinion. There are some UA-camrs “fake” reacting BTS and its so sad because our boys work really hard to do their music and videos so I really enjoy your insights of the group. Thanks!
'We on' is also a song they made for haters... it's such melodious diss track lol Sept. 2013 (debut year) - Cypher pt 1 Feb 2014 - Cypher pt 2 Aug 2014 - Cypher pt 3 (most famous one) Oct. 2016 - Cypher pt 4 Also u usually upload every 4 days so i wasn't expecting. I'm really getting excited to see ur reaction to bts
Cypher pt. 3 was done live in 2022 Busan Concert where some of the lyrics from the Jhope verse & hook was changed. You should check that one out, coz that's the most recent live version and they went crazy on it coz they said they'll never perform Cypher 3 again instead they'll make Cypher pt. 5 after this.
Told you Cypher 1 was short :D I think it was a subunit experiment, since the vocal line also got their own song as the Outro on that album. As others have stated, there's five months between Cyphers 1 and 2, and then another five months between 2 and 3; after that, it was two more years until Cypher 4. According to Suga, Cypher 2 was barely finished in time for mastering the Skool Luv Affair EP, 'cause they really worked on those lyrics. It's probably their angriest Cypher, and it is very much rm and Suga's song - j-hope gets his verse but is otherwise mostly acting as a hype man - because it's them responding to some hip-hop artists who essentially called them idol shit to their faces. I'm kinda surprised a name starting with "B" hasn't shown up in the comments yet. :) I'm super stoked at how much you enjoyed rm's verse, because he put the effort in and it _shows_; someone on reddit once did a chart of his flow switches and it's a bonkers number. It's a verse that feels like it gets overlooked because of how much Suga goes off, but really, they both tear this song to pieces, and sadly the only live of it I know has not great audio. The poetry term for that repetition of consonant sounds, incidentally, is "consonance"; when it's full syllables across lines, it's considered "rhyme" or "internal rhyme," and the point you were making was not stupid, it was excellent! Your knack for pointing out these things really makes your reactions stand out. Also you're one of few people to comment on Suga's demented laugh at the end; most people seem to stop before that bit, even though it's a perfect end note for his verse. Glad you're checking out the next Cyphers live; rap line performing is on a whole 'nother level. Unfortunately the best Cypher pt. 3 and 4 live vids - Brilliant's Stage Mix videos - don't have English subs on them. The Summer Sonic performance is excellent, but the audio's not the best; still, it's fun to see all seven up of them up there for the song. The recent Busan performance is also really, really good, though j-hope changed his verses (it's cool, one never gets translated right anyways), and I think it's mostly only available in fan cams now. Have fun in the ATL, and I look forward to your next vid!
I look forward to RM's verse in cypher 2 more than Suga 's and vice versa in pt3. So i get what u mean, tho ppl always hype their verses in the other way around 😀
Yep yep yep. BTS are always showing growth and that's what makes them special to us. They're showing that there's a process to everything, you just have to keep on going
RM's flow between English and Korean in the same sentence and then back again, amazes me. He's also a math genius who connects his math relationship to his musical notes. Love that man! 💜 I get it... you explaining pronouncing syllables. Google: Doolset BTS Cypher
I've watched a LOT of these reactions over the years and I have to say you're one of the very few if not the only one I've ever seen really go deep on the growth if they even mention it at all. Love how much you're digging the journey and how much you appreciate the artistry.
Cypher 2: Yoongi part is his recorded fastest rap, he said that he can rap faster than that but what’s the point of quick rap //mic drop BOOM!! I Love Him
Cyphers 3 & 4 are my favorite. You are so spot on about being able to hear their growth, as rappers, with each Cypher. I would highly recommend you watch their Cyphers 3 & 4 in live performances. Also the Cyphers Medley live is AWESOME! 💜
RM, J-hope and Suga are so in sync with each other, they flow in and out with their individual styles and their lyrics hit home each time. We are so lucky to have 3 Master Rappers in one group.
I love this so much! And yeah the "emperor" and "parachute" lines where RM manipulates the words into a rhyme, can't get enough of that. Other favorite part: "It's a workaholic cause I'm shopping for pens... but at the same time I'm shopping. For PENS tho!"
Finally! Please react to their song RUN BTS next! It is one of their last releases as a full roup. I feel you will like it! It has choreo too, so you may check their rap, voices, lyrics and dancing at the same time.
That's the beauty of BTS' music. They always level up and grow so much between releases. Army always has such high expectations from their new songs and they always go above and beyond those expectations.✨
Just note that when it comes to captions there may not be a direct English translation for certain Korean phrases or slang which is why it can sometimes look a bit odd. An you have to remember you are watching content spanning 10 years so what they think and wrote about then has obviously changed as they have matured. Unike many artsts BTS never make the same song twice so don't expect to hear 5 songs like Joke, or 5 cyphers the same. Which I LOVE!💜
Skip to 05:06 for your mandatory phone call interruption - it’s becoming a meme at this point 😂 thanks for leaving those in the edit, man. Also, thanks for reacting to these! It don’t matter how many times I go back to the Cyphers - their raw energy gets me every time.
I love all of the Cyphers but 2 is my favorite. The rising effect they put behind Suga’s section just automatically adds to the hype feeling you get from him and this song and personally I think it has one of the most overlooked lines from Rm. Him calling them “old caterpillars” to me is just amazing. Caterpillars don’t grow old, they build themselves a cocoon and evolve, becoming something beautiful that can fly to new heights and new places. So he’s saying they are stuck, never learning, never showing any growth, without ever evolving. And I love it so much!
I do look forward to your reactions. There are so many fake reactors just trying to hop in the BTS bandwagon (although BTS just makes $$ off their views and you KNOW over time they will fall in love with their music) but I love how you break down each line. What I love even more than that is you genuine love and appreciation of their skill and lyrical craft. Keep up the great work 💜🤗💜❤️💜
Yes, this is just the beginning. Can't wait for you to see more. Cypher 2 is my favourite and I think, it's them at their angriest. 😂 Enjoy BTS More channel has all the cypher with lyrics from doolset and it'll be easier to read. 💜💜💜
I'm french (and 46 yrs old lady) so I'll try my best in english. Total respect for your musical sensitivity, smart brain and analyses. In Cypher part 2, you noticed the "so where ma EMPERORS at" with the following " I PARACHUTE on my Neverland" and you commented "This is art, I can't explain". I can. This is what I teach to my students in french poetry - but it exists in any language - when poets non only play on words, but on letters. When you repeat a consonant : EMPERORS / PARACHUTE : you have 2 P and 2 R... it's called an "alliteration". When you do it with vowels like when RM raps "'on a CD, on a TV, you can SEE ME, enVY ME, it's a pItY, gEE gEE", it's called an "assonance" : these are the basics of Malherbe, a french poet who noticed the phonetic power of sounds in words and fixed these rules in the 16th century (at the time, French was a worldwide - a smaller world then, lol - spoken language). RM is very literate and smart : he plays with these poetic rules in any language - korean, english, japanese - in many many songs... He masters it + his flow + the deep meaning of his words >> the best ever today ! That's it.
Hearing bts discography in order is crazy because the first few releases are like " wow this is really good" then the next couple albums be like " oh my god this is amazing! There is no way they're going to top this" but then you hear the newest stuff and it's like " 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯"
This is why I love listening to the cyphers in order. You can really hear the growth. Especially with Jhope. When he recorded Cypher 1, he had only been rapping for about a year. But Suga has always been savage. I love it!
I absolutely love the laugh at the end of 2! Suga is a savage when he wants to be. You are correct that there was growth from 1 to 2. Our guys worked and still work tirelessly to continuously improve and grow. They are so inspiring as artist and people. Thanks for your reaction. I always really enjoy and appreciate your thoughts.
his tag is “hey suga” in a whisper usually right before he raps or sings. he’s coming out with a new album. if you liked daechwita you’ll love his new album. i’m pretty sure it comes out tomorrow.
you’re right!! you hear growth with each cypher. but the thing about cyphers is that they have many references, doolset really is a savior when looking into the cyphers 🫶
Might be too early to place my bets, but I think we are witnessing the birth of a Joonie bias! 😂😂😂 Genuinely though, thank you for taking the time to listen to and recognise our boys! And never worry about the length of your reactions. We'll be here for it! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Balanced and fair reaction as always. Appreciate you viewing it from the lens of growth. Here are some live performances with good translations, at least for me: Part 3: ua-cam.com/video/yE-4gjtKjyY/v-deo.html The Busan performance of pt. 3 was my fave but I figured you'd want to see/hear a performance closer to the time it was released. Part 4: ua-cam.com/video/WhXokbbS1Ac/v-deo.html Looking forward to the next installment!
Although part 1 was already good, more of an old school vibe and I loved J-Hope's "introduction" so to say as he learnt to rap only after joining Big Hit, part 2 is worlds apart. I'm not saying that the faster the rap, the better, because that's simply untrue, but in part 2, then 3, and 4 they learnt even more irt cadence, various tricks, even better lyricism. Part 3 and 4 have awesome live performances with good subtitles, i.e. "BTS - Cypher pt.3 Killer live from On Stage [...]" from "Enjoy BTS more" channel, or "BTS Cypher 4 live" on Queen channel. Best Cypher 3 live performance tho imo is the most recent one from concert in Busan but it doesn't have subtitlesm RM went crazy on it tho!
I don't know if armys already explained this but they were definitely proving a point to all the underground rappers who criticized them for "selling out" and joining an idol group (because of the stereotype that all idols are just pretty faces with no substance, that they are "feminine" because they use makeup and all that crap). There was one in particular called BFree that had beef with them and suga's verse in Cypher 2 is mostly directed at him! 😅 Also you were right about the cyphers being recorded and released in different years. Cypher 1 (2013 - when bts debuted as a group) Cypher 2 (2014) Cypher 3 (2014) Cypher 4 (2016) And the fourth is the last one in the series because they finally let go of the anger and pain caused by the criticism!
But remember that Namjoon said that since Busan was the last time they sing the Cyphers, they would have to do a new one for the next concerts, so Cypher pt 5 not ruled out at all
also I really appreciate that you didn't act like cypher 1 was the greatest most lifechanging thing you've heard, but you also gave a thoughtful opinion about it, I keep saying this but thank you for the genuineness
I really love your reactions. As a hiphop head myself it’s so amazing to see, that you just get it. ;) You really have to watch a live performance of the cyphers, especially pt.2. Not only do they sound amazing on the record, but they also are one of the best performers. I saw a lot of hip hop artists in my life on stage who are only sounding good in the studio and work with backing tracks. The rapline owns the stage!
When it comes to BTS, there's always growth & maturity in what they do. They're constantly working on themselves so they can become a better version of themselves which resonate with so many around the globe. This is our precious rap line: RM, Suga & JHope...the holy Trinity of BTS. Definitely check out their individual mix tapes and official solo albums to fully understand and appreciate the growth & maturity as Artists and individuals. They've done so many collaborations as well. BTS bless us with so much amazing contents because there's still our precious Vocal line: Jin, Jimin, V & Jungkook and all 7 members making BTS as a whole. If you're just tuning in, you got a decade worth of awesome contents from BTS. I've been ARMY since February 2014 and I'm STILL trying to catch up. 😂💜🎶
What I got out of the Cypher genres at those times were that on the Earlier days, old school hip-hop &Rap, and later on Sunday 2 neo style raps each a GeM 💎 for/of its time.
i can clearly see how youre not vibing to cypher pt 1 AND THATS OKAY!! Like i know they can do more when i have listened to there works now but i love that you see their growth. It’s different when you listened to pt 1 and see how they improved EVERY SINGLE TIME throughout the pt 2. I just also want to say that they adopt to the time or trend soooo thats why it sounds like very different. Pt 1 and 2 is really different from the rap songs nowadays and it is really indeed very old school-it just shows how western hiphop or the original hiphop influenced them A LOT. Thank you for this real reaction!!!
Here are the live performance with english subs. I hope you watch both of them, both are epic! Cypher pt3 - ua-cam.com/video/pxW3r_txgzs/v-deo.html Cypher pt4 - ua-cam.com/video/OoZT52SUCMw/v-deo.html
Here is an updated link for Cypher pt3 (it's the same video, but i think the link was missing a letter so it didn't open): ua-cam.com/video/pxW3r_txgzs/v-deo.html
also the line by RM in p2 ‘yeah that’s me beat, a guy badder than rain’ is a reference to the like super famous korean singer Rain who had a song called bad guy that blew up
I agree with you, you can see the growth. Pt.1 came out like 3 months after their debut which is crazy and the other one in 2014. I love the lyrics of Cypher pt.2 a lot. These 2 feel definitely like cyphers, the other ones too but have more of a song structure idk
I didn’t expect that you’d do both songs in one video 😂😂😂, it reminded me of the UGH-Outro:Tear video. I loved it !! To comment on some of your reactions to Cypher pt 2, you were actually correct. This song is a response to B Free (an underground Korean rapper). It is a direct response to an interview where he was one of the interviewers with RM and SUGA back in 2013 when they were 19 and 20 years old respectively to celebrate BTS’ upcoming one-year anniversary. [Note: B Free was 28 years old at this time, almost a decade senior to RM and SUGA]. They went to the interview expecting an open-minded conversation about their music, but what they experienced was one-sided aggression. B Free condemned RM + SUGA saying they “sold out” to the K-Pop industry and that they’re not “real rappers” anymore because they left the underground scene and they joined a K-Pop group. [Note: BTS were originally a hip-hop rapper group when they joined, but it changed over time] He said that they were just chasing money, they wore make-up and feminine clothing so they’re not actual rappers. It got so bad that Bang Si-Hyuk (BTS’ company CEO at the time, producer, composer) went to B Free’s agency to personally talk to him because of this. B Free didn’t apologize til 6 years later when BTS garnered national and international prestige, and it was a pretty thinly veiled apology. He’s just an overall “bad senior” since instead of talking and collaborating with rookie BTS, he just cursed them and opened them up to undeserved scrutiny on both the underground rapper + k-pop sides. [Note: It was an especially harsh hit on RM and SUGA because THEY WERE ACTUAL underground rappers before joining BTS. But, their community turned their backs on them.] This was longer than I thought, so I’ll put the performance links in a different comment :) I hope this gave you some insight on the history of the cyphers 💜
This is one of my faves. I think it's because of what they had to say and Suga with that laugh...man, they slapping back at those rappers that came after them. You have got to watch the Live where they do parts of all 4 of the Cyphers together. The energy is unreal. They exude swag all over that doggone stage.
I JUST LITERALLY COMMENTED LAST NIGHT HOPING YOU WOULD REACT TO CYPHERSSS. OMGGGG THANK YOUUU!!! YOU'RE LITERALLY MY FAVORITE BTS REACTOR ON THE PLANET!!! 🙏🏻❤
When I think of the 4 Cyphers in the whole context, I see a bell curve. Cypher 1 starts at a place where like you said you know there growth is coming and it progresses up at a peak in the style and content with Cyphers 2 and 3 at the top of the curve with it coming down on Cypher 4 (not because it's lesser in quality) but because they have grown so much and at a place they can truly disregard the haters they directed the Cyphers to in the first place. Their growth, anger and maturity it is seen in the "bell curve." That's just the way I see the progression. My favourites are Cypers 2 and 4 btw! Great reaction!
I always get nervous when reactors get to cypher 3 because of /that one/ Yoongi line. So many times I've gotten into watching reactors only for them to have... troubling... reactions to that line. GameBoyy 310 I won't spoil it for you, but when you see it yes, it does mean exactly what you think it means. You've been so chill and thoughtful and kind about things so far, please keep being that way 🙏
Also, in the lyric video when Suga is saying 'your raps are all recycled' he's actually saying 'your raps are all ABABA' he's making fun of their basic rap form 😂 No one will disagree with you that you can hear their growth. Only 5 months between 1 & 2 though! This is why rapline are my biases! I especially love the poet and the shit talker 😂
I finally remembered: it’s alliteration(in writing). That’s what you we’re talking about in Cypher Pt. 2 about there being similar sounds that are closer together. I knew what you were talking about, but I was struggling with you cause I couldn’t remember either. Thank you for being real! The whole cypher series is a staircase of their growth as artist and people.
The time of release for each cypher: Cypher 1: September 2013 Cypher 2: February 2014 Cypher 3: August 2014 Cypher 4: October 2016 Also, recently RM said that the last time they’ll perform Cypher 3 live was in their Busan concert in 2022. He said that they’ll just write a new one 😂. So, I hope you stick around and welcome Cypher pt 5 with us sometime in 2026. 💜
i'm a big rapline & cypher enthusiast so finally seeing you react to them & dissect each lyrics made me appreciate them more esp coming from a rapper/hiphop person! CAN'T WAIT FOR CYPER 3&4 YOU'LL FUCKING LOVE IT !!!!!
I don’t think I saw anyone mention it yet but the reason there’s such an improvement from 1-2 is because they TRULY had something to prove. That “Hawaii” line was a DIRECT shot at somebody lol Suga has never been afraid to talk shit 💀💀 I think RM and Suga really went in and let Hobi take a backseat on 2 because they were personally attacked and humiliated in an interview with these so-called “rappers” who wanted to criticize them and call them sell-outs and a bunch of stuff other than their names because they were “just idol rappers”. They were quite literally a bunch of nobodies who thought they could tell people what is and isn’t hip-hop (in Korea of all places mind you ) Meanwhile, BTS was already washing all them at ages 19 & 20 😂. Also, if I remember correctly, the time gap between 1&2 is somewhere around 5ish or 6 months which is actually crazy lol, they wasn’t playing no games. But yeah, like you said, BTS have always been one to do their homework and study to get better at their craft and it’s very clear where their influences come from and they’ll be the first to tell you so I’ve always really respected them for that~ Doolset Translations are gonna be your best bet to really get into the punchlines and wordplay and I really recommend it! Cypher 3 is my personal favorite so I can’t wait for your reaction. I usually don’t leave comments and I haven’t watched reaction videos in a longgggg time but I’ve had so much fun keeping up with yours. Love and peace~💜✌🏾
loved the reaction, your insight is always very interesting! Looking forward to the parts 3 and 4! Also, Agust D just released his album, and we have two more mvs - Haegeum and Amygdala (this one will be released soon), hopefully you'll get a chance to react to them as well!
The cyphers are based on different types of rap vibes. Cypher 1 is more old school, 2 is more underground, 3 is mixed underground flows with mainstream rap, 4 is mainstream with suga cadence and flow.
I think what you were talking about at 20:45 was assonance, aka similar vowel sounds! Emperors/parachute/Peter Pan have mostly different consonants (although the p's do alliterate across the lines), but all three words have three vowels sounds, and all of the vowel sounds are similar, especially the way RM pronounces them
The main reason I like people to listen/ read the Cyphers is exactly what you said "seeing the growth" and I love that about you cause you do get it. lol, It's nor, ally hard for e to say I have a favorite BTS anything because I love it/ them all, but I do favor Cypher part 2. To me, it was BTS defending themselves from that no-name a-hole who called them girls. That's who Suga tells to go back to Hawaii and he did lol.
The way you get swept away with RM and SUGA's rap in Pt. 2, the way I could see on your face how much you were into it brings me a lot of joy!!!! I appreciate it so much, great reaction as always, and the commentary on growth and cadence was everythinggggg.
Okay since you're asking for it, cypher pt 3 and 4 and fan favorites and my personal favorite is pt. 3 because there is no THAT part in it, every single part is isonic and every verse to me is equally good, incomparable. Though, I suggest you first do the studio versions of them before the live versions for you to have a better idea of what they are. you could do the live version separately and there's also a cypher medley where they performed all 4 of them. Cypher pt 3 came out also in 2014 with their first studio album and 4th overall release "Dark & Wild" where "Hip Hop Phile" is also from. pt 4 is from WINGS which came out in 2016 so while the first 3 cyphers were a few months apart the last one came out about 2 years later.
I don't know what to say that you nor the comments have already said - but I REALLY APPRECIATE the part where you point out to listen to 1 & then 2 and just... take note. Keep it up and upgrade oneself and just - yes. The first is good in it's own way, but some songs just hit better/harder to some ears and just. Pt 2 just - the constant changes and the way it hits for each of the three of them... and they NEVER cease to impress. Even if it's just Pt 1 showing "this is only the beginning" and what they're capable of. That and, as other commenters stated, the reason behind that one. And that LAUGH. Yoongi/Suga knows what's up.
Pt 1 was 2013 (RM & Jhope were 19, Suga 20)
Pt 2 was 2014
Pt 3 was later 2014
Pt 4 was 2016
You can definitely hear their growth with each one!! It’s crazy how hard they work to grow and get better.
Thank you Army Bri for that info, because l always wonder the timeline between the Cyphers myself.
were they written in the same year they were released? /gen
Thank you! 💜
I think you might have missed it but my favourite line in Cypher Pt 2 is RM’s “This is a kingdom, I’m king, you’re dumb” like KING-DOM. KING-DUMB. Genius.
Same. The burn is unreal 😂🔥
I LOVE THIS ONE bc u gotta be bilingual to get it. like u gotta be able to translate wangguk to kingdom in ur head for the second part to click
his mind is too big
I never caught that! Ahhh i love that man’s mind
I fucking love that line- it gets me every time 🔥
genius RM❤
Hong Gil-dong is a hero of a famous classic Korean novel who could not call his father as "father" bc he was an illegitimate child. thats why RM mentioned Hong Gil-dong when he said "they see good thing but they can't call it good"
+ for rm's verse in Cypher pt2 (if your not Korean, this will be kinda hard to understand)
Just do the "chun" because you have no "shil"
ㄴfor this verse "chun" has two meaning. 1."chun" means "cloth" 2. "do chun"(천해) means you have a low status
"shil" also has two meanings. 1. "shil" means "thread" 2. "no shil"(실없어) means your pointless
I'll push you out because I really don't like you
ㄴ in Korean these words ryme with "chun" and "shil" !!
I'm good at sewing, putting it into practice
ㄴhe's talking about sewing bc of the "thread" and "cloth"
putting into practice in Korean is "shil-chun"(실천)
Just do the "yeon," like I said, you have no "shil"
ㄴ "yeon" means kite
Rise and rise to the sky but get ripped, bucket, I've forgotten you
ㄴ a kite without "shil"(thread) gets up in the sky and ends up ripped in pieces
sorry for my poor English...if you want any more parts to be translated, just leave it in the comments!
it was a shame that there wasn't any videos that explained all this to foreigners
This is fantastic - we miss so much as non Korean speakers 😢
The "chun" - " shil" and "yeon" - "shil" bits rarely get translated at all, though I think doolset has notes on them? Thank you for this comment to explain things!
Thanks so much for this explanation! So many things we miss out on. Thank goodness for Apago! 😊
thank you so much for explaining the lyrics more!!
감사합니다~~ 💜
I'll stop commenting after this last observation: J-Hope started learning how to rap alongside RM and Suga, years later than them. I think it shows in those early cyphers, he hadn't found his style 100% just yet. Which makes his present skills all the more amazing, he worked hard to get to where he is. It's not an easy feat to come in as a dancer and manage to get on an even level with rappers like RM and Suga you know? And yet it's undeniable now that he is up there. I'm just really proud of him haha.
Preach!
SO proud of Hoseok 🥺💜
I'm really proud of him too, but let's be honest here, J-Hope never worked up to RM and Suga. He had the same progression as everyone else in the group. This was something that just came naturally to him. JK gets way more respect as the golden maknae than Hobi does as the golden hyung and, as far as I'm concerned, Hobi is a better singer than JK is a rapper. Hobi isn't my bias but come on, this dude is a trump card. There is a reactor that I watch who has said "if I never know who it is, I know it's Hobi". We need to love on our sunshine more.
I agree, hobi grew so much and is such a versatile force
J-hope himself said that Suga worked with him directly to teach him rap skills. Many rappers trained at the same time, but Suga saw something in J-hope worth nurturing. I'm proud of them all since each had to humble himself to not dominate and allow the others space to grow. That's the secret to BTS success, the stronger members never attempt to ball hog. I hope they can survive the solo career wars, when fans unleash foolishness to elevate their favs. Time will tell.
So many reactors stop the video before Yoongi's laugh at the end and I get so sad. His laugh is the perfect ending to the song. Thank you for not skipping it 😭💜
those are usually fake reactors who can’t wait to get the song over with 😭😭
Lmao, the "birth of Agust D" laugh is classic

And RM does what he does in 2 languages. He really uses his voice like an instrument. Just outstanding!
He is a Poet, he twists language and everything has more than one meaning and he really has a unique and powerful way to get his point across.
You’re gonna love pt 3. I recommend their most recent performance at their concert Yet to Come in Busan 2022. It’s incredible. RM goes crazy
But the Busan one is hard to find on UA-cam.
@@Yunkikihihi I was also going to suggest Busan until I realized that they were mostly fancams with terrible sound, or films people made of the theater release.
This is the most decent one I found the others have a horrible sound...
ua-cam.com/video/ecABEiRuUf4/v-deo.html
Yes Killer was amazing, especially when Yoongi said " this is my heart" before they started. Gave me chills
They also changed the lyrics in Busan, iirc
"he sounds like he's about to fuck shit up" lmaooo top 10 sentences before disaster
23:17 LMFAOOO I lost it when Yoongi was talking his shit and you caught it immediately, “The shit talker!” 😭😭 he just known for talking shit atp
+1
This! Love your reactions!
yess I second this!! no matter how well translated videos are, context is important to understand the whole thing (especially for diss-tracks, where they talk about specific instances)
like after discovering dollset my admiration for them only grew... look at what doolset wrote about ONE verse in cypher pt2:
너넨 그냥 긴수염, 한 마디로 메기여
You guys are just long beards, catfish in one word
(1) Rhyme: 흰 수염 (heuin sooyeom; white beard) - 긴 수염 (gin sooyeom; long beard)
(2) Metaphor: 메기 (megi; catfish), known for its flattened head prominent barbels that resemble a cat’s whiskers, is often used as a metaphor for an ugly person.
I screw you over with one word.”

Agree!!
In a nutshell he was told go go home to Hawaii 💀.
yoongi getting the nickname ''the shit talker'' is so fitting for him lmaooo
Cypher 2 is what got me back into rap. I will be 70 this year and I am up jamming and grooving to this reaction in the early 6am. I've listened to all the cyphers over 10 times and I never get tired either. The Rap Line got me dead up into P. Cole. All the Rap OGS, BTS, and J. Cole got me traveling down the rabbit hole. 💜×7
That’s fantastic!
Eid Mubarak sis 💜🙏🏼
"Pride" was a Korean subcompact Korean car, The Kia Pride. RM said if you're a Kia Pride, then he's a Chrysler which is a bigger better car. He goes on to say he's priceless.
I think it's worth mentioning that Suga and RM were underground rappers before they became idols. People were AFRAID to go against RM, and he was like, 13
RM: (poet rap) explains why you're shit
Suga: (fast rap) tells you, you are shit
JHope: (flow rap) will tell you it's okay to be shit
how ARMY differentiates rap line be like XD💜
Hobi lessens the blow. He makes it pleasant 😂
this is also a great way of putting it:
JHope visualizes the world
RM analyses the world
Suga criticizes the world
Slayed it 💯😂
plsss😭😭😭
Lmfao 🤣
Part 2: best bars. Part 4: best vibes (and beat). Also there's a clear progression. After part 4 and Ddaeng they stop addressing their haters and instead put the fork in hate itself with UGH. This makes sense because they got so big that it's not nice punching down on losers.
There's a specific person who they really targeted on Cypher 2 which is why I love it so much. His name is B-Free and there is a video of him where he constantly attacked the members for being an idol calling them fake rappers right in front of their faces. And that person is from Hawaii that's why Suga put that in their. Crazy. 😂
You can google the english translation of this and some would have explanations on each lines what the reasons behind it.
Keep it coming!! I always wait for your videos! ❤
👍🏻
Man if i was b free i would never show my face in the industry ever again after being DRAGGED through the mud like this 😂😂
i would like to thank the dude! look at all the bars of shut the eff up we got out of it
There's a live version of Pt.2 Pt.3 & Pt.4
They performed Cypher Pt.3 most recently (last year) and jhope completely switched up his verse! So check out the original first! Enjoy!
That cypher medley was dope!!!!
I really wish he reacts to the live performances i wish he can find some that have lyrics on. The performances are insane
I loved the Busan performance.
Cpyher 1: 2013 with their 2nd mini album O!RUL8,2?
Cypher 2: 2014 (Skool Luv Affair 3rd Minialbum)
Cypher 3: 2014 (Dark & Wild 1st full album)
Cypher 4: 2016 (WINGS 2nd full album)
I love the cyphers because, as you stated, you can see their progress more and more.
Nearly tripped trying to get to this as fast as possible 😂
Wow the Cyphers....you're in for a treat!
(+) Oh ps, enjoy your trip out of town. Return safely, thanks for the reaction! 💜
I was at work when i received his notif i rushed home so i can watch yoongi's teaser then his reaction
G DRAGON KING ,
You’re literally the the most realest reactioner ever. You don’t beat around the bush and you’re not afraid to say your opinion. There are some UA-camrs “fake” reacting BTS and its so sad because our boys work really hard to do their music and videos so I really enjoy your insights of the group. Thanks!
'We on' is also a song they made for haters... it's such melodious diss track lol
Sept. 2013 (debut year) - Cypher pt 1
Feb 2014 - Cypher pt 2
Aug 2014 - Cypher pt 3 (most famous one)
Oct. 2016 - Cypher pt 4
Also u usually upload every 4 days so i wasn't expecting. I'm really getting excited to see ur reaction to bts
We On is slept on for real.
Bless you for mentioning "We On," which doesn't get brought up a lot but is just as vicious as Cypher 1 and comes in from the whole of BTS.
You're a real one!
I recommend We On all the timeeee T_T I love vocal line part so much xDDDDD
Oooh you've finally come to the Cyphers! Please make sure to watch the Cypher Medley Live after seeing all 4 😊
yesssss
Yes cypher medley live is a must
Yes please!!! Where they are wearing white clothes! I don’t know what concert that was
Yes, please watch the live Cypher medley! It is hella lit with the audience on 1000%.
I’m adding another comment to please watch the Cypher Medley Live where they have on white clothes.
I'm super stoked at how much you enjoyed rm's verse, because he put the effort in and it _shows_; someone on reddit once did a chart of his flow switches and it's a bonkers number.
So i get what u mean, tho ppl always hype their verses in the other way around 😀
this was such a good comment!
Yep yep yep. BTS are always showing growth and that's what makes them special to us. They're showing that there's a process to everything, you just have to keep on going
j-hope also has cadence and a lot of truth in everything he writes. Hobi was born evolved, he is giant! He has personality and a lot of swag.
Love how much you're digging the journey and how much you appreciate the artistry.
when you whining "RM slow down" I feel you. He's too fast I can't catch up so I just enjoy and jam 😂😂
they’re always calling you during the best parts of the song 😭😭😭
I also love how they’re constantly hyping each other during performances, not just waiting for their verse but they are all in for the full song!
@@jenwinsim Yes! They are so energetic and fun to watch.
You get it. 👍 That's exactly why the Cyphers 1-4 should be heard in order. The growth is so very evident, both in quality and attitude. 💜
Army always has such high expectations from their new songs and they always go above and beyond those expectations.✨
laughter and whispering are the personal etiquette of SUGA
Yes, it's like that they know that he's doing BTS =)
Keep up the great work 💜🤗💜❤️💜
THIS!!!!
I LOVE the badder than Rain verse, it refers to a OG artist Rain whos Debut song was 'Bad Guy'. I love it 😂✊🏾
Yes, this is just the beginning.
I love it!
The "go to Hawaii" is actually a famous dialogue from a famous Korean gangster movie, Yoongi actually imitates the way the actor says it in the movie
Here are some live performances with good translations, at least for me:

Looking forward to the next installment!
Best Cypher 3 live performance tho imo is the most recent one from concert in Busan but it doesn't have subtitlesm RM went crazy on it tho!
suga’s new song will drop this friday… the teaser sounds a bop already i cant wait for everyone to hear it!
Also you were right about the cyphers being recorded and released in different years.
Cypher 1 (2013 - when bts debuted as a group)
Cypher 2 (2014)
Cypher 3 (2014)
Cypher 4 (2016)
And the fourth is the last one in the series because they finally let go of the anger and pain caused by the criticism!
Cypher pt. 2 is my fav FOR A REASON! And Yoongi's part is just I C O N I C
He is into rap more ,he said but he will look into vocals
What I got out of the Cypher genres at those times were that on the Earlier days, old school hip-hop &Rap, and later on Sunday 2 neo style raps each a GeM 💎 for/of its time.
finally the Cyphers!! so excited for this
i can clearly see how youre not vibing to cypher pt 1 AND THATS OKAY!!

Here is an updated link for Cypher pt3 (it's the same video, but i think the link was missing a letter so it didn't open): ua-cam.com/video/pxW3r_txgzs/v-deo.html
@@melon7205 Thanks! I've updated the link...
giving this comment attention so he can check the vids out.
@@kcg.7 yeah of course:)))
Yep this one uses doolset's lyrics!
LOL that you had to do the 2nd. I had to laugh harder when you told RM to slow down on Cypher 2 when Suga hasn't had his turn
Yessss!!! Cyphers! Another great reaction! Thanks for sharing! Desperately waiting for Cyphers 3 & 4! And then Cypher Medley live!💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
also the line by RM in p2 ‘yeah that’s me beat, a guy badder than rain’ is a reference to the like super famous korean singer Rain who had a song called bad guy that blew up
And B-Free was never heard from again😂
I agree with you, you can see the growth. Pt.1 came out like 3 months after their debut which is crazy and the other one in 2014. I love the lyrics of Cypher pt.2 a lot. These 2 feel definitely like cyphers, the other ones too but have more of a song structure idk
I want Suga's evil laugh as my ring tone! xD
It’s taken me a couple of years of listening to realize he really does laugh in a lot of the songs! I love it!
[Note: BTS were originally a hip-hop rapper group when they joined, but it changed over time]
He said that they were just chasing money, they wore make-up and feminine clothing so they’re not actual rappers.
But, their community turned their backs on them.]
This was longer than I thought, so I’ll put the performance links in a different comment :) I hope this gave you some insight on the history of the cyphers 💜
AAAAAAHHHH I’VE NEVER BEEN SO EARLY BEFORE 😭
Cypher Pt 2 is my favorite of the four, excited for your always thoughtful and always REAL reactions~ 💜
😂 you yelling wait at RM in the second one and i was thinking you haven't even hit Yoongi's part
You've been so chill and thoughtful and kind about things so far, please keep being that way 🙏
I will wait patiently here for you to check RMs INDIGO... A MASTERPIECE!
Aside from Outro:Tear, i love all the Cyphers. They play loud in the car lol 😆 ☺️
Also, in the lyric video when Suga is saying 'your raps are all recycled' he's actually saying 'your raps are all ABABA' he's making fun of their basic rap form 😂
No one will disagree with you that you can hear their growth.
The time of release for each cypher:
Cypher 1: September 2013
Cypher 2: February 2014
Cypher 3: August 2014
Cypher 4: October 2016
Also, recently RM said that the last time they’ll perform Cypher 3 live was in their Busan concert in 2022.
That “Hawaii” line was a DIRECT shot at somebody lol Suga has never been afraid to talk shit 💀💀
I think RM and Suga really went in and let Hobi take a backseat on 2 because they were personally attacked and humiliated in an interview with these so-called “rappers” who wanted to criticize them and call them sell-outs and a bunch of stuff other than their names because they were “just idol rappers”. But yeah, like you said, BTS have always been one to do their homework and study to get better at their craft and it’s very clear where their influences come from and they’ll be the first to tell you so I’ve always really respected them for that~
Doolset Translations are gonna be your best bet to really get into the punchlines and wordplay and I really recommend it! Cypher 3 is my personal favorite so I can’t wait for your reaction. I usually don’t leave comments and I haven’t watched reaction videos in a longgggg time but I’ve had so much fun keeping up with yours. Love and peace~💜✌🏾
YOU'RE ONE OF THE BEST REACTORS OUT THERE. PERIOD. Keeping it real since day one.
loved the reaction, your insight is always very interesting!
Love your reactions. Suga is my fav rapper. He's the shit talker hahahaha yahhh
Suga is referencing that character named "Free" in this Cypher. Called him "Sugar" and called him a girl lol
Cypher 3 from the Busan Yet to Come concert in 2022!!!!! Amazing
