  • In this video we cover the compatible mold materials for casting Platinum silicone. We use resin, silicone, plaster, and alginate molds to pour 5100 soft silicone positives. We also give a quick overview of vacuum degassing.

Hi, greetings from Venezuela, congratulations for all that work explaining and helping everyone in these videos, excellent work... I have a suggestion for a video in the future: different methods or ways to create molds and castings for silicone prosthetic appliances, with encapsulators... and again thanks for your videos!

what about urethane or poliurethane rubber as mould cast for silicone pieces? are more than a decade that i do silicone moulds for my urethane- polyurethane rubber masks creations... i was wondering if the reverse could work since you mentioned the poyurethane resin that i already use in silicone moulds... Hard shore of course as strongness. Thanks for your amazing videos!

The problem with polyurethane rubber is that only a few formulas work. The shortages have led to some formula’s getting changed and that means even the ones that used to work, may not work now. 🙁

Are you aware of any 3D Print resins compatible with platinum? Would love to pour into a 2 piece 3d printed mold (sla)

There are so many new 3D print materials I can't keep up with them all! I have had some SLA resins mold with no issues and others that inhibit. In a future video I will see what I can do to figure out which ones work best and which ones to avoid.

You can use whatever resin you want, you just need to really, REALLY clean your print before pouring + a really thin coating of something that doesn't inhibit the curing process. Google "Preventing Platinum-cure Silicone Cure Inhibition in Resin-printed Molds" to find a fantastic breakdown of Jan Mrázek's exhaustive testing and resulting protocol for this issue.

Brick In The Yard Mold Supply You said several times about the temperature of at least 70 degrees. But they did not specify, are these Fahrenheites or Celsius? It seems to me that 70 degrees Celsius is a lot for the room =) So you are talking about Fahrenheit?)
    p.s. cool video, thanks!)

Possibly weird question… When casting silicone in silicone, can you spray mold release in a silicone mold and then dust the inside with matting powder to matte the result? Or will that ruin both the mold and the cast? (…actually, would it even work in a polyurethane mold? I still don’t know if my setup is well ventilated enough for it, so I got a small amount of mold silicone/release to do a test. Also because I couldn’t find any local plaster at reasonable prices to make a mold for the silicone I bought from you.)

I have not tried that but I think it warrants a test! If I figure anything out I’ll post the results on our Instagram page

@@bitymoldsupply I feel ya! Our heater broke yesterday morning, and it’s under 50F in our house by now. I can’t experiment with silicone right now, either. I hope it doesn’t permanently damage my silicone or anything…

When you touch it, you can tell if it is silicone or palpable
