Both the Godox (Cube and Magic XT1) are the best, both clean and have a nice depth to them ...... fab video and im planning on buying on buying both soon
the rode sounds really good but i purchased the dji mic 2 because i dont need to use a computer to change the setting. in addition the sound quality of the mic 2 is acceptable and i am very happy with them.
I had my doubts about these mini DJI thingies. Compared to the old school Tescam they are a treat. Thanks also for your studio insights 🙏👍 I’m a Profoto guy but I like your setup a lot 😄
Thanks Alexander. Yep - all the mini mics benefit hugely from a bit of manual EQ/NC in post, but straight out of the gate I've been really impressed by them. Annoyed that I didn't get my hands on the DJI Mini mic ahead of making this!
@ yeah, what can I say… guilty as charged I suppose. There’s so much stuff sitting around and what makes your videos really pop is charisma. You got a ton, you’re on to something and I’m glad to have discovered your channel at the right moment. Thanks Mark 🙏
I'm wondering why the sound is better/clearer in those public settings vs. the empty room? Personally, I'm looking for the best mic to record singer-songwriter clips in my house/room. Any perspective on that? I'm wondering if it's mainly because the mics are closer to your mouth when you're outside, on your collar...
Yes, there’s that. And also the empty room has a lot of hard surfaces in for the sound to bounce off. Difficult to isolate sound in there without using extra help from software. In that market I was surrounded by people which, whilst busy, helped isolate the sound a little more. Singer/songwriter wise I’d go with either of the Røde mics. They pick up little nuances that I couldn’t hear in the others.
Just ordered the rode wireless micro,I was looking at the rode wireless pro but film 95% on my iPhone so for ease of use I thought I would go with the micro
I wish you ended with an actual recommendation. Generally saying they are all great makes the whole thing feel disingenuous, and all around not very helpful for people trying to narrow down their choice.
@ThatMarkGilroy I need something that can double for doing solo youtube content (opposed to a larger mic because I will be moving a lot), as well as be suitable for casual 1 on 1 video interviews, all shot from smartphone. These all seem like they'd work, but what's best? What are their pro's and con's?
@@TheLukelondon The big thing that I noticed (you can hear it if you listen with headphones on) is that the Røde's sound significantly better with my own EQ/noise cancelling applied. Almost no compression or loss of quality at all. If you just need a plug and play option for audio that's going to be recorded straight to camera and uploaded without any tweaks, the Lark and Godox options are all good...but both the Røde's sound the best to my ear. Given your use case of smartphone only my top recommendation would be the Røde Wireless Pros.
@@TheLukelondon No worries. FYI - I edit in Final Cut Pro and just applied the flat EQ to these, and then dialed up the voice isolation to about 70-80% to get the effect you hear in the third version of each of the sound tests. Other EQs are available!
I think the interesting thing about the Wireless Pro is how good it sounds with extra EQ/noise cancelling added in software. Almost no loss of clarity or compression.
After seeing many reviews - especially yours. I’m glad to have made a decision! The usability, form factor and sound quality was most important for me. I’m going with the Rode Wireless Micro. For me, this is best being my ecosystem includes the Rode Wireless PRO and the Rode PodMic USB. I now have a few options for on the go mic systems. 👍🏾
Timecodes if anyone wants to compare sound tests:

5:37 Hollyland Lark M2

9:44 DJI Mic 2

Rode Wireless Micro all i wanted to know was if it works on PC and you answered that first thank you.
@@AllTerrainActionEV No problem my friend!
Nice work, Mark. Your own audio setup is the best I've heard on UA-cam; the labour involved is well worth it.
Wow, thanks!
This video is so helpful, I'm now thinking of getting a DJI Mic 2 for Christmas to upgrade the audio quality of my videos.
@@Patrick-Lee Glad it was helpful mate 👍🏻

You may already follow him but my pal Fabian Holland has a great channel for singer/songwriters and especially focusing on audio tips.
@@ThatMarkGilroy ah, gotcha! thank you for the explanation, and recommendation!

Yep, sounds really solid, especially outdoors.

@@parkviewphotography7529 Thanks mate. Watch out for that receiver- slippery! 😂
I'm surprised that Godox are able to produce some very decent mics at a very reasonably price. With some pot processing, they sound great!
I was really surprised how great these sounded too!
