    It is a good drive. I input over 3500 music CDs into my iMac into Itunes. I burned about 250 music CDs, 25 DVDs of photos, and maybe 15 CDs of text before it finally stopped working. Of course, that count doesn't include the dozens of DVD movies I watched. I tried using a less expensive disc drive as a replacement, but it didn't write track information on the music CDs. I bit the bullet and bought another Apple Super Drive. The reviews said it is the best on the market. I believe it. It works great for burning videos as well.

    Hi as mentioned below, they really should update the Superdrive to provide Blu ray (BD). As to DVD's disappearing that's true to an extent, however to give you an example, I'm a Film Student, from 2014-2015 I did a Bachelor of Film at SAE QANTM Creative Media Institute (SAE originally stood for School of Audio Engineering). They had iMac's in all the classrooms, these included the older iMac's with an Optical Drive plus the newer ones as per your clip (they had both Mac OS X and Windows 7 set up on the iMac's). Now we had to submit our Film assignments by Burning them to a DVD and submitting them at Reception / Student Services, so therefore, how do you Burn your Film to a DVD? Some of the classrooms had the new iMac's with no Optical Drive, but the ones with the older iMac's weren't always available. Likewise in our Library some were old (with an Optical Drive) and some were new (without). So it wasn't always easy to find the right iMac. Even one of our Lecturer's who was showing us Documentary Films (for us to analyse) had to bring in his own Superdrive because the classroom we had didn't have the older iMac's (not even the Lecturer's iMac up the front had one). And when using Windows 7 (on their iMac's) it would also come up with BD (Blu ray) Drive on the older iMac's (with Optical Drives), but not when in Mac OS X! Lastly, I know and understand what you mean ref DVD's "going out", but now that Blu ray DVD's are becoming more commonplace in DVD Rental and purchase, in a way I think the iMac's and Macbook's/Macbook Pro's (at least the 15 inch models) should have a Blu ray Optical Drive (read & burn) so you can watch Blu ray's and/or Burn to them, especially with the Mac's Retina display, perfect for Blu ray! As this couldn't be done with purely online/iTunes "movies" as their quality would be equivalent to standard DVD; it's a lost opportunity for Apple. I really would like to get a "Mac" of some sort one day but the lack of an Blu ray capable Optical Drive, even in the Superdrive is a shame.

    Just out of curiosity, does the USB Superdrive work on a 2016 Touch bar MacBook Pro and newer models? The reason I'm asking is because I viewed a recent video where someone was having issues getting the Superdrive to work, and had to add more USBs to his Mac. I also plan on buying this Superdrive and don't want to run into the same issue.

    I've had the USB SuperDrive in the box for almost a year--I like to make CD's, and this is my first Mac--just like yours in the video. HOWEVER, on my El Capitan, I've plugged the Drive into the back, like you did, and No Noises, No pop-up box that something was being opened and no new device is recognized......shouldn't I be getting some indication the iMac has a new device? Next, I don't want to be feeding it CD's if nothing is recognized, and no indication of how to Eject it..........OR, does popping in a CD "trigger" the iMac to inform me a new device is being introduced? On "Finder" there is no device shown pertaining to the USB SuperDrive, so, my basic question is, HOW to get it recognized, then up and running, then how to eject a CD? I can do nothing at this point--wonder if you could do a video on situations like mine---I have the same iMac you do, but no matter if I re-boot, or whatever, NO DEVICE shows up, on Finder, or on a pop-up! What is up, please! Thanks in advance.

      Make sure you're plugging it directly in and not using a hub or usb extension cable. If it still doesn't work, try rebooting with it connected. If it still doesn't work, it may be broken and you would have to buy a new one.

      The Apple DVD Superdrive can be made to work on a linux PC by changing a variable in the linux software. The same can be done on 2008 to 2012 Macbooks that have an internal DVD drive. Apple has deliberately crippled the DVD Superdrive so that by default it only works with some Apple computers, however this problem can be fixed in the case of OSX and Linux. Not sure about Windows.

    If Apple reduced the price of their computers since they don't have the drive, that would be nice. But they got rid of the drive and kept the price the same. That's kind of lame.

    • @phototristan
      @phototristan  3 роки тому +1

      Has nothing to do with price. An optical drive cannot fit in such thin laptops like their offerings ever since the Macbook Air up until any Macbook today.

    • @tglenn3121
      @tglenn3121 3 роки тому +1

      @@phototristan Yeah, I get that they can't fit in a thin computer. But Apple pulls this double-whammy of removing the drive from the computers but continuing to charge the same price for the computer, and then turning around and saying "well, if you want an optical drive, you have pay extra for an external drive." To me, that's total b.s.

      @@phototristan On the contrary. I have quite a few Apple products. iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac Mini, iMac, Apple laptop. iPad, iPod, etc. Ok, then, I don't like any company that is forcing customers to keep paying the same price for their products even when those products offer less feature, and then turn around and force them to pay extra to get those features again. So, not specifically Apple. Just any company that does this kind of strategy.

    • @phototristan
      @phototristan  6 років тому +3

      The current Mabooks and iMacs are like paper thin. No room for a optical drive in them that makes no sense to make them thicker just to include one built-in given that most users don't need it constantly and those that do, only need it on occasion.

    • @charlietaylor4373
      @charlietaylor4373 6 років тому +2

      I'd rather have it thicker so I don't have to lug around extra hardware. Besides, optical drives way barely 1/4 of a pound. This is why I'll never buy a new MacBook. Maybe it's just me, but paying more and getting less, just doesn't make sense to me.

    • @phototristan
      @phototristan  6 років тому +3

      If it's thicker to include an optical drive, then you are lugging around extra hardware, all the time, and not by choice either.

    • @charlietaylor4373
      @charlietaylor4373 6 років тому +1

      That's like saying it's better to carry around a phone without a built-in camera, and a camera as well, instead of carrying around a phone with a built -in camera. Sure, it's a bit bigger, but it's damn easier than carrying around both things seperately, but sure, whatever.

    • @phototristan

      Flawed logic there since the camera in a phone does not increase the size of the phone. Nor is it something that is seldomly used.
