Can we take a moment to appreciate that amazing break off shot to gift Steve the start he needed
Spencer broke the jaw of the ball boy on Wimbledon centre court , with that right arm
Agreed. But, you’ve still got to pot them ! Fabulous break.
When we look back at old snooker frames/matches we are looking with our 2024 eyes - This at the time was an amazing acheivement - the quality of snooker since has just rocketed in line with the prize money !!!!!
When you saw Ronnie ask about the prize for a 147 when his break was on 8 before clearing with the maximum is COMPLETELY astonishing :)
This was a very exciting time for snooker - Steve was an amazing breakbuilder and great all round player - what a treat this first 147 actually was, you can see it in his eyes at the end - only shame is that it was on iTV
If Alex or jimmy did this, we’d still be hearing about it. That pink was outrageous.
We are still hearing about it though to be fair.
Steve Davis won a lada car for this 147 break, but at that time he had a Porsche car :)
In the classified ads the next day:
For Sale:
New, never driven, Lada.
Make me an offer.
But it was a classic...sorry I'll get my coat..
I would have stopped after potting the pink. The thought of being stuck with a Lada!
I saw him doing a Q&A and he said the insurance on his Porsche was more than the cost of the Lada!
He gave it to Alex Higgins, who was extremely angry because he thought Steve was giving him a Large Vodka. 👍
Beautiful, even 40 years later it still looks good; as they say form is temporary but CLASS is PERMANENT.
This 147 was included on the PC game Virtual Snooker back in 1996. Steve Davies also did some instructional videos that actually did really help teach you the game. I remember recently upgrading from an Amiga and absolutely loving the mind-blowing ability of CD-ROM!
"Sucessful Snooker" was a book and then a video - brilliant !!!!
2:35 that double was outrageous
When you look at some of the pots he took on in this break you'd never think he was trying to make the first ever one on TV especially the long red he porpusly left himself at the end goes to show under pressure when he was confident he backed himself every time. What a player Davis was in his prime,to know how good he was just listen to Ronnie o Sullivan who rates Steve in the top 4/5 to ever do it and Ronnie should know because he played Davis in a master's final in the 90s which Steve came back from 8-4 down to win 6 in a row playing possible his best snooker of 90 to win the masters final 10-8 and then in 04/05 they played each other in the Welsh open final and led Ronnie 8-5 only for Ronnie to play live Davis did against him in the masters final basically no miss snooker and Ronnie won 9-8 in another amazing final and then in 06/07 not sure exactly what year but he reached the Uk final 17 years out of his prime and lost to an in form ding 10-6.Also i was pleasantly surprised when I looked at his head to head vs Hendry by the amount of times he beat hendry in the 90s despite not having the confidence and belief he has in himself in the 80s and he walloped Hendry quite a few times mostly in the 80s but also 4/5 times in the 90s also and in his final year at the crusible he defeated John Higgins in the second round 13-11 and i watched a fair bit of that match and Davis played some great snooker during that match. All in all Davis deserves his place amongst the best ever and he will stay there for however long snooker is played.Iconic snooker player with a great personality.Theres only one steve davis.
6 time world Champion, guy is in top 3 ever, for most people number one
@@perun4649 i agree with davis in the top 5 but by far most say O'Sullivan is the greatest and they would be right but it takes nothing away from Davis.
@@MrGloryglorymanutd18yeah man ronnie probbably but there is guy called hendry who won 7 world titles, and for me its hard to choose
@@perun4649 the only thing that detracts from Hendry's world titles is that he won most if them against Jimmy White who couldn't hold the cue, even when he was a couple of balls away, arse our the trousers, but Hendry was genius.
Couldn’t agree more
The flowers are a nice touch! Beats having to look at the word cazoo for two hours!
He got out of position quite a few times and still managed to make the MAX
That last pink was massive considering the pressure !!!
This was the equivalent of Rogister Bannister running the the 1st mile under 5 min. Steve Davis paved the way for a new generation of players. A truly iconic moment in sport!
I can run it in 5! ...you mean 4.
Wasn't it Rogister Banner?
The first and the best snooker maximum to be honest.. Apart from ronnie's 5min max wich is out of the world
So, you've literally agreed with yourself that half your statement is wrong. 😂
Despite being only 7 at the time, I liked watching the snooker on ABC in Australia with my Father, I'll always remember my father explaining to me how despite doing the break John has not been back to the table since and Steve had not missed, Though the 147 aspect at the time, I probably hadn't quite grasped the significance of that!
John had actually made one before this but the TV folk were on a tea break so it wasn't recorded sadly
I watched it then, but even watching it now I hope he doesn't miss.
Amazing how rapid he was in his younger days.
What a player.
Hadn't watched that in many years. Steve certainly worked extremely hard to accomplish it with some big pressure shots.
A great clearance. People tend to forget that Terry Griffiths won the tournament because this break overshadows it a bit.
The look on his face,,,,he couldn’t believe it!! What have I just done? What the fuck do I want a Lada for? 🙈🙈🤣🤣🤣🤣
That last pink was a great shot under the circumstances .
Judd Trump missed a slightly easier one when he agonisingly lost the UK 2020 Final at the death.
I’ve got The Lada in my garage. It’s now worth £147.000👍 What Shots! What A Break! What A Champion Davis was.👍
That was quite brilliant
The nugget was awesome
Steve still cruises the streets of Romford with Barry Hearn in the Lada car he won for that break.
Usually with his windows down and snooker loopy by Chaz n Dave blaring from the sound system.
Well done, Lad
Great break
The Romford Robot. Pure class.
I'd just turned 17 when Davis did this and to be honest I couldn't have cared less cos me,all my friends and my parents were massive Alex Higgins fans and disliked Davis with a passion but when you see this now it makes me realise just how good a player he was.
If you take into consideration inflation etc. that Lada today would be worth nearly a whole five pounds.
we should take a moment to break down this first 147 ?
1st. old type of table with the old style cloth and pockets
2nd. old style of balls very heavy and many kicks
3rd . the tips and chalks.
4th. the pressure of being the first person to do it live on tv.
funny thing was i heard that john spencer did it a week before in the Holsten Lager International but the tv crew was on a tea break and did not film it hahahahah
plus using the rests
Yes that break was at the old Fulcrum centre in Slough.
Suprizingly clear video. Maybe it wuz on film orijinally?
Great break to watch, knowing that he’s going to pot the tricky ones..!
My memory of him playing back then was he was a steadier slower player than this. I was only 8 at the time tho and Higgins was my hero so comparing to him I guess he was slow. Watching this shows how fast he actually played!
Was it live?
Looking back, amazing as it was, it was probably the most out of position 147 ever.
Positional play wasn’t as thought out as it is now and tables were slower.
And for all the effort he put into that break, he won a Lada - the automotive equivalent of a verruca.
Sturdy verruca though! 😂
They gave him a Lada for getting a 147? Did Spencer get two Ladas for not getting a 147?
First comment and first davis fan.
Like the first 4 minute mile Steve showed it was possible. More players and more TV coverage made the next 171, more likely.
I'm watching 40 year old snooker.
Mind in the game of snooker then standard has gotten higher also the commentary has improved tremendously those commentators could send you to sleep
And some used to call Steve Davis boring, those commentators, now that's boring.
Dave Steveis
Gery vood
Wow what a pink, to think he was considered boring back in the day, today he'd be the entertainer!
That pink though!
Brilliant then, brilliant now, Steve was and still is a hero of mine. The Nugget.
When was the last time we saw a pro use the half butt? Things have moved on!
whats a half butt? is it a que that tappers off at the butt end? dont they use them anymore are they round like a pool que now ?
or do you mean the long reach table que he used ? looks like he had a good look at the tip and chaulked it well
the shot on the last pink is just ridiculous
Funny how one announcer was "Oh, he's got an angle and is on to the next ball" and the other one was "Oh...that's the end of the break, I'm afraid..." wishing everything negative on him..."the pocket is closing up and closing up..."
Such bad luck to land where he did on the last pink. Fantastic shot to save it.
Under the circumstance, quite possibly the best pot and position on the black in snooker's history!
@@johnny_pilot it's certainly up there
Is this the only maximum to include a double? I think it might be!
plus, using the long rest, and the rest maybe twice was it?.. class
awesome! whys he called the nugget? is it because he digs deep? after that pink i'd call him the golden nugget
Shame it was sponsored by Lada, what a car to win! If only it had been sponsored by mercedes!
Ted Lowe showing the Dunkirk spirit
Its John Pullman and David Taylor commentating
This was on ITV, Ted Lowe was a BBC commentator.
Two long sticks appear and I am thinking why has he been handed two rests and suddenly he starts chalking one of the sticks and I am like whoaah😂
Anybody know who the commentators were!!
John Pullman and David Taylor (The Silver Fox)
@@UnionAlley ah very good,thank you.
This was the only 147 Steve Davis did!
If you were to only have one, it doesn't get better than that for its status in the sport.
I'm an American and I've only been watching snooker for about six years. By no means am I a serious fan, but it was important for me to gain an understanding of the sport's history. When I came across Steve Davis, my appreciation for snooker multiplied - as did my interest.
Does anyone think that the crucible curse will ever be broken?
He told them to keep the lada and got a nice bottle of 12 year old Jameson
Big pockets 😳
Even today, the best controlled maximum I've ever seen was the one made by James Wattana on ITV. Not a single loss of position, unless it's considered so to have to pot a black with ones bridge hand on the wood of the cushion and a very long bridge. All others, without exception, contained an element of luck but that does generate more excitement.
His father was murdered that day. I remember it as James being told durimg the interval that his father had been murdered, then he went back out and did a 147 (4th ever on TV?). When I look up the news now, it doesn't say whether he knew about his father's death yet... so not sure.
Good old James Acaster
Class Player and Classy, so hard to beat, White was brilliant and should have won a WC, Hendry came along and just raised the bar. The new generation have no respect for these guys at all, especially Hendry. Top Class 80s dominated by Davis, 90s Dominated by Hendry, 2000s very difficult decade, so many top class players all going the Hendry way. 2010 not as gd as 2000s and no hmmm a bit boring especially break off. I'd quite happily watch 1980-2008 👍
And not a phone camera in sight. Just folks in the moment, enjoying it. Great memories.
Amazing all but the lacklustre commentary lol
This Davis dude was pretty good, wonder what happened to him?......... 😀
Lol. Winning a lada.
Who is the commentators
John Pulman and David Taylor
Lada shouldn't really have been sponsors at the time. It was associated with the USSR, the country was involved with the controversial invasion of Afghanistan.
Back in the day when snooker players had personality and it was entertaining to watch. Why has it declinedcso much that it's now like darts with ludicrous nicknames for every single player and they have to enter the arena to some crappy music that the player happens to like?
perhaps we're getting old mate.. fantastic break
@@Bringidon Indeed fantastic break. And yes, I agree I'm getting old, mate!
That pink !!@@!!
Always taught kirk stevens got the first one
Stevens knocked in the third on TV.
Iv played on that table and i no were it is it's in poor state I might add
Be great to see a split screen of this and Ronnie's unbroken record 147 in 5.20mins. You could make and drink a cup of tea waiting for Steve to catch up. No disrespect to the legend.
I can't remember seeing too many worse break off shots than that
It was okay.
Lada means shit in Russian.
A 147 break and all he wins is a flippin' Lada, a Soviet knockoff of a boxy old Fiat?! They were viewed by many as clown cars, ready to fall apart at a moment's notice even back then! I'm sure Steve Davis had a much nicer car of his own through other prize money at the time!!!
