Dude, ours this year was AMAZING, our theme was like Africa and our drum major tuxedos had leopard print like capes and cuffs and vests. They break danced... not sure what I will do next year.
@HeEm1215 I think that some of them are too long but several aren't. You generally want to keep your salute 10 seconds or less. You don't want to give them your visual dissertation. A few were too long, but I know for a fact that the second one was 10 seconds or less and that one was fine. You want to keep it short and sweet but that doesn't mean it has to be simple.
You're correct. Judges don't care about something fancy. These salutes are too long, and those who want long salutes will find out sooner or later, the "good" drum majors who receive captions are the ones who don't need flashy salutes.
Very cool:) I just made a combination of Ashton's and Keaton's. I did make sure to forward your video to the band and give you full credit though:) Thanks a bunch!
@richyg1299 Noo...that's what our judges told us. And our band director.. he's a "short-and-to-the-point" guy. I like making mine about 8 counts. 8 for the "strut," 8 for the salute. (:
@molecular360 I think you'd be surprised if you heard my drum major's tapes, mine and my students, of nearly a decade of what is accepted. Some of these salutes would score well in a competition.
I don't think you would recognize a good salute if it came up and introduced itself to you. I have been a dm for four years, and I'm coming from 3 years of being all superior and best drum major in many competitions in high school, with one year of being the allstate drum major, and a year of being a well known college drum major. The salutes from this video are far from perfect, but they are not terrible.
The first person to go is definitely the best one. I didn't like salute 3, 5, 6, and 7 because from a judges view, you wouldn't be able to see those weird angles. The rest were great though. May I add to this, no it is not all about dm's, but a dm's score shouldn't have to suffer because it is too short. Because there is on every scoring sheet "showmanship", and it mostly comes from your salute.
Well we have two salutes the one for getting award which is short and the extremely long and extravvegent one where I actually use years of Tae Kwon Do and run up two other drum majors and flip off them... ya its pretty awesome and a bitch except we didnt think this through cause we were tuxs and figured we would rip them so toned it down. :(
If it makes any difference at all, I think the salutes were great! :D And I was told that the salutes could only last for 12 counts, so you dummies are getting worked up over nothing! Great job you three! :P
Creativity involves creating your own thing. You can get ideas and tweak things that you've seen to your liking, but copying someone else knowingly isn't something that should be done.
@HeEm1215 also what does it matter if they're in band they have good salutes plus it says they're drum major salutes and you kinda have to be in band to be a drum major. I don't think they were making them just or fun.
I assume you don't live in the South, where they have primary black marching bands with 400+ members. Those bands are some of the most entertaining in all of marching band
Meh, I think you all need to lighten up. My schools Drum Majors do both the traditional simple, and more "fun" salutes, it just depends on what we are doing at the time. For example, On halloween, we do a fun salute, as well as on Senior Night. In play off games, we do a more serious, traditional salute. Each has its merits, depending on the situation.
my question to you is what is the meaning in the salute you have done? is there any? is this just for show?? find meaning in your salute and have it represent you as a drum major. it just makes it so much more appropriate. and...you can slow down too. it should be at the same speed as the commands you give the band or the audience will be taken aback by the speed. speed is not always good. tight, controlled movements are impressive.
i agree with most of the comments already in saying that these salutes are too long!! although a few were really cool and entertaining you really need to keep them short and sweet!!!
@Gimpet14976 These types of salutes are highly preferred for drum majors in the North Mississippi area. I do not know where they are from, but you should learn about different styles and what is acceptable for that region before you give advice.
ehhr the idea is to be quick, show them your ready and that your band is gonna knock them off their feets. and thats done with sharp and fast ones with a serious look on. and sure smiling is good after taking the shako off. but like 0archwas says, they're too long. creative and good though.
interesting stuff! but pleasssseeee..... fix the salute hand. we shouldnt be able to see the underside of your hand. ever. also, keep the thumb tucked so it doesnt stick out anywhere. though long, they are cool.
cool stuff, except for one thing. Don't show the whole palm of you hand forward like that. Your hand show be predominantly straight, with preferably a little bit turned down, to show the back of the hand.
@DCInternationalfan Actually, they are not awful. These types of salutes are highly preferred for drum majors in North Mississippi. You should learn about different styles and what is "good" for that region before you label good or bad.
@CrazeKillen I think you need to learn how to type. These types of salutes are highly preferred for drum majors in the North Mississippi area. I do not know where they are from, but you should learn about different styles and what is acceptable for that region before you give advice.
When he popped out and said this is how u do a salute he scared the shit out of me 😂😂😂
there's a fine line doing drum major salutes and looking like a power ranger
do u think they would actually allow these salutes at a competition??? lol
The Second Dude was da best
Dude, ours this year was AMAZING, our theme was like Africa and our drum major tuxedos had leopard print like capes and cuffs and vests. They break danced... not sure what I will do next year.
Ahh, was not expecting that kid to jump out of no where in the beginning and make me shit my pantss.
@HeEm1215 I think that some of them are too long but several aren't. You generally want to keep your salute 10 seconds or less. You don't want to give them your visual dissertation. love the second one!
You're correct. Judges don't care about something fancy. These salutes are too long, and those who want long salutes will find out sooner or later, the "good" drum majors who receive captions are the ones who don't need flashy salutes.
The last one = goose dance
you boys are sick with it! good work with beginner's salutes! i'm trying to make up eight bars of my own so thx for the help :)
those happen to be pretty amazing, all of them
thanks, i've been looking for some ideas for my senior salute, this is a great reference
Can you make an instant replay of that in slow-motion so I can copy down every single one of your salutes?
to be honest, im suprised seeing a homie doing a MARCHING BAND SALUTE XD
yikes this is hard, but i think i may have narrowed it down three that i like, so we shall see, tryouts are this week :) i'm readdy
just make sure that during your salute, your hands don't go back to attention. that means your done.
0:28
this is a personal time stamp...don’t worry about it
I was told my my director that they are supposed to be about counts. Sometimes judges will take points off for a salute too long.
Those look really cool
@0mansoon0 last time I checked, all the judges in our area want is flashy. so yeah maybe it's starting to be that way.
Great job guys. Want to come teach my drum majors?
Very cool:) I just made a combination of Ashton's and Keaton's. I did make sure to forward your video to the band and give you full credit though:) Thanks a bunch!

i'm using one of these as well. if you don't mind. ha. thanks for the ideas guys.
kierstin- west shamokin drum major
@molecular360 I think you'd be surprised if you heard my drum major's tapes, mine and my students, of nearly a decade of what is accepted. Some of these salutes would score well in a competition.
Nice length! It depends on the theme of the show for a more dance-ish one. And watch that your palm isn't showing so much, but good over all :)
God I wish we did competition band
ah its all so superfluous! holy crap.
very nice if it were a DM only show. except i can see the palms on your right hands.
I don't give a shit what these people say! Those salutes were awesome! Nice work!
I always heard that the salutes should be between 4 and 8 counts.
I like the angles you make but they last a little long
sick salutes
I don't think you would recognize a good salute if it came up and introduced itself to you. I have been a dm for four years, and I'm coming from 3 years of being all superior and best drum major in many competitions in high school, with one year of being the allstate drum major, and a year of being a well known college drum major. The salutes from this video are far from perfect, but they are not terrible.
I like the second salute! :)
The black guy scared the shit out of me at the beginning.
12 years ago??? tf
To much movement...simple yet effective! I am starting my 2nd year as drum major for my high school
The first person to go is definitely the best one. I didn't like salute 3, 5, 6, and 7 because from a judges view, you wouldn't be able to see those weird angles. The rest were great though. thats wats up yall seem like yall got it on lock...great
Freaking sweet!!
I love this :)
i like the 3rd guys the best
Well we have two salutes the one for getting award which is short and the extremely long and extravvegent one where I actually use years of Tae Kwon Do and run up two other drum majors and flip off them... ya its pretty awesome and a bitch except we didnt think this through cause we were tuxs and figured we would rip them so toned it down. :(
If it makes any difference at all, I think the salutes were great! :D And I was told that the salutes could only last for 12 counts, so you dummies are getting worked up over nothing! Great job you three! :P
bahaha... the last one was epic
Creativity involves creating your own thing. You can get ideas and tweak things that you've seen to your liking, but copying someone else knowingly isn't something that should be done.
the 2nd is the best:P
some people like long salutes... like me :)
I love you.
@HeEm1215 also what does it matter if they're in band they have good salutes plus it says they're drum major salutes and you kinda have to be in band to be a drum major. I don't think they were making them just or fun.
I thought this was :] pretty cool. and last time i checked they don't deduct anything. -_-
Am I the only one or did the kid in the beginning scare you?
I assume you don't live in the South, where they have primary black marching bands with 400+ members. Those bands are some of the most entertaining in all of marching band

The black guy is hoss. Way to go man
Meagan what are you doing watching drum major videos?!
coool
i agree with most of the comments already in saying that these salutes are too long!! although a few were really cool and entertaining you really need to keep them short and sweet!!!
i liked the 4th one best. it was short sweet and simple. the rest were really repetitive and weird
@Gimpet14976 amen
very good but try doing this step by step plz
@Gimpet14976 These types of salutes are highly preferred for drum majors in the North Mississippi area. I do not know where they are from, but you should learn about different styles and what is acceptable for that region before you give advice.
and Dsnowh7 is right--palm up means your country has surrendered in a war. we haven't.
ehhr the idea is to be quick, show them your ready and that your band is gonna knock them off their feets. and thats done with sharp and fast ones with a serious look on. and sure smiling is good after taking the shako off. but like
0archwas says, they're too long.
creative and good though.
why they wanna salute with these patterns
1st guy looks like a cheerleader.....
You all need to waste your free time playing video games like normal kids...your friends will thank you...but maybe those are the only ones left.
They were good, but a little long in my opinion.
Those are sweet....but don't you think it's a little excessive? =P
Boiiiii
how about you watch a U.S. Marine salute.
now thats how its done.
and i did march drum corps too. now in the military.
Whats up with your arms in attention. its so high...
does anybody else power rangers in this or is it just me.
interesting stuff! but pleasssseeee..... fix the salute hand. we shouldnt be able to see the underside of your hand. ever. also, keep the thumb tucked so it doesnt stick out anywhere.
though long, they are cool.
ya.. its like 10 counts... its great and wonderful but to much, and the arm thing is over done. and try to end on a marching number. (4 8 12 or 16)
did you go to SASI camp?
Ghey
they're good. the sort of salute you do signifies what kind of band you're apart of. short and sweet salute isn't always a cool band.
@sexy19red are you guys all drum majors??
i so agree, the only drum majors are the one in the pipe bands, their cool, not like these with their gay salutes
@CrazeKillen :P
what about them?
cool stuff, except for one thing.
Don't show the whole palm of you hand forward like that. Your hand show be predominantly straight, with preferably a little bit turned down, to show the back of the hand.
what does Keaton's key chain say?
Rolled up jeans... Seriously?
Legend has it that the black dudes chain is still ringing
Are you a corps of power rangers?
these are way to Flashy!
There cool though
datruking8 your grammar though....
@DCInternationalfan Actually, they are not awful. These types of salutes are highly preferred for drum majors in North Mississippi. You should learn about different styles and what is "good" for that region before you label good or bad.
isn't this.. tutting?xD
k.
naruto much?
Power Rangers!!!!!!!!!
@CrazeKillen I think you need to learn how to type. These types of salutes are highly preferred for drum majors in the North Mississippi area. I do not know where they are from, but you should learn about different styles and what is acceptable for that region before you give advice.
@TxRaider13 why would you say somthing like that. thats just horrible
gawd i hate these kinds of salutes
Group salute? These are ok but IMO they are all too long.
too much!!! and why are your arms flared out at attention??? good creativity though.
wow. fail.
