I got to see VH at their homecoming show for the “Fair Warning” Tour at The LA Coliseum! The opening song was “Mean Street”!

It should also be noted there were two guitarists on Michael Jackson's "Beat It". Eddie Van Halen did the amazing guitar solo in the song, but the guitar playing you hear thru the majority of the song and killer riffs were played by none other than Steve Lukather, lead guitarist for the band "Toto". The drums in the song were played by the amazing Jeff Porcaro, also of Toto.
TOTO was a super band ...
Can you imagine if Lukather and Van Halen did a double guitar album together !!?

@@davidbuswa9425 Most excellent question. The bass player on "Beat it" was actually also Steve Lukather of Toto too. Steve played all the lead guitar and bass guitar parts on the song. In fact, there was even a third guitarist on "Beat it" as well. That would be Mr. Paul Jackson Jr. (No relation to Michael) who himself has a very impressive resume and uber talented on other songs and albums of Michael he did as well. For Beat it though, it was mainly Steve Lukather and Eddie Van Halen the solo. All Paul Jackson Jr did on the song was overdub Steve Lukather on the main riff using rhythm guitar. "Beat It" was quite the collaboration. As I mentioned Jeff Porcaro did drums. Even Steve Porcaro did synthesizer and synth programming along with Greg Phillinganes, yet another two musical geniuses from Toto making the count of four Toto members now who contributed to this song, among other credited parts of Beat it I have not even mentioned yet here. For example, even Michael himself played on the song. He actually made a beat sound on a drum case in the studio during recording.

Rush NEVER opened for Van Halen in Las Vegas; they both played back-to-back headlining shows at the same venue (Aladdin hotel): Rush on June 14, 1981 & Van Halen the following night.
Makes me.wonder what else ya got wrong here.
Van Halen's first album is one of the all time best rock albums ever, also on the list is AC/DC's Back in black!

I like Van Halen II much more than the first album now. I remember buying such classic albums like "Moving Pictures" "Back In Black" "and remember the incredible comeback of Aerosmith. Dio's "Holy Diver" and "The Last In Line" were awesome too.

I met Ed backstage after a show back in '91. He was very chill and than I envisioned him to be. I thought him to be on the introverted side at least to strangers, but very nice and no attitude. Sammy was still on a high after the show and was turned to 10. Alex was tired and wanted to get back to the hotel. Mike kind of went with the flow but seemed like a regular guy that you could talk to. Anyway I had a brief interaction with the four of them before they got whisked to their limo. This was 12/13/1991 in Miami. I was in their company again in Atlanta at the Lakewood Amphitheater for sound check when I infiltrated security there with a fake backstage pass around my neck. It wasn't too hard because the wood gate was open so I let myself in and no one kicked me out. There was a young kid that did the same thing and we hung out all afternoon enjoying every minute of it. I miss this guy a lot and over the past 40 years of going to Van Halen shows leaves me sad that it's over.
I remember the wooden gate. Also the one behind the side of the stage where beside the concession stand and western wall of the amphitheater. (I think western....the Stewart avenues/freedom pkwy side). They sometime had a tiny stage for bands to play before the show. To the side of this was the opening to the floor seats. I was a the Rush R30 tour around 2004.....and it was also 96 rocks anniversary...I was at that particular wooden gate and Dave Grohl talked to me for like 30 minutes or more. I didn't realize who he was. He had a smile like the the movie "Grinch"...the same guy who was in rocky horror picture show. Forgot that name. Anyway...he mad this long tooth grin and it annoyed me...as I was never a Fan of alternative and nirvana. Dave just talked my head off...asked me about drumming...asked where I was from (the mountains above atlanta near Helen)...he said he has been there....and I kept looking past him hoping to get a glimpse of Rush or someone I knew from the atlanta music biz....and the security guard kept laughing at us (cause he realized I didn't know I was talking to dave grohl) ...and I was enjoyed by dave. Finally I said..."hey man...I gotta go get a beer and and get to my seat or I'll miss the show"...(I also told him i hated alternative and bands like nirvana...and he was laughing). Later...during break in the show..I go back to the same gate and the security guy told me who I was taking to earlier. Anyways...I'm a Van Halen fanatic. Been to Cabo. Been to driveway of Eddie's 5150 home. The Malibu home (not inside it but sort of) and beach. I jammed at Cabo on Alex's Ludwig set with a band in 1995. Met Eddie, Alex, and michael at several soundchecks...met up with Sammy's son a few times backstage after messaging on social media. On and on...I even play in rock bands since I was a kid and I'm 49 now. I've been all in to rock, hard rock, prog rock and pop since I was a kid. I've got a few stories and I enjoyed yours.
By the way...I looked at your UA-cam channel page. Saw Porsches and Florida. I saw palm beach... I used to play in bands down there. We would play "Clematas By Night" in downtown West Palm Beach. Renegades. Jupiter. Wellington. Green Acres. Airboat Halftrack show out in the Loxahatchee Boy Scout camp. I played Captain Hiram's in Sebastian. The Mud Jam in Port Saint Luci. The saint Luci mud jam. Etc... ate at Duffys regularly. Guinobanas (bad spell). Partied at Spearmint Rhino/Monroes as the weekend band (with all the perks). Eat at Dennys late night next to the Porsche dealer. On and on and on..gigs all over down there.

Eddie Van Halen changed the musical landscape in the late seventies and early eighties, which is why some older era musicians did not like him. They ceased getting as much radio play as hard tock and metal styles dominated. RIP to EVH.
Rubbish. They were a pop rock band that fostered the nauseating hair metal genre. AC/DC and Motorhead set the landscape for hard rock, and Black Sabbath did the same for Heavy Metal. Van Halen had radio success with pop music like California Girls and Jump.
@@mauharley Actually, "California Girls" was from David Lee Roth's solo EP. I am basically talking about all the albums Van Halen recorded before the cover dominated "Diver Down." It was Eddie Van Halen's guitar playing persona. Every upcoming guitar player wanted to play like EVH. Of course, VH were not part of the hair metal genre, but whatever. I lived through the era. AC/DC were mainstream hard rock with "Back In Black" being such a killer album but compared to other bands, Motorhead barely got any attention. The music back then coexisted together. From VH to Rush to Journey to AC/DC to Judas Priest to Iron Maiden to Ozzy to Ratt to Dokken to Cinderella to Great White and more....

Preach it , brother ! 😊 I have , become aware , of my addictions, 6-27-87 , and went to A.A. my cousin , insisted, on 90 + meetings , in 90 days , and I did , and was able to stay clean and sober , but once , I knew , GOD , was in the room , I didn’t like all these people , who didn’t , or couldn’t , find that it wasn’t anything , they did ! But was the Lord , working through them , and my cousin , was one of them , he had his story , when he came into the rooms , he weighed just 95 lbs. and I could out drink , drug him , any day of the week , long story short , he still goes , and he’s now one of those people , who stayed in AA and he acts like he’s royalty , and has recently , professed his , being saved ….but it’s all horse sh.. , and I haven’t talked to him in 8 months ! I didn’t lose anything … friends , like brothers for over 60+ yrs. , just cut me off like a bad habit

His son Wolfgang has his own band now, Mammoth WVH but his music sounds too modern. And he refuses to play VH songs but he did play Panama, Hot for Teacher at the Taylor Hawkins tribute in Sept 2022. This year, Sammy Hagar and Mike Anthony are doing a tour in July and August and playing VH hits. Dave Lee Roth might make a few appearances.

True, but more so when you're an A-hole at the top of your game. I absolutely adore VH, and there is no doubt that EVH was the greatest, or one of the greatest (depending on your ranking metrics) guitarists in history. But by a preponderance of the evidence, he (and his brother) were A-holes, at least for certain periods of their careers/life. Doesn't change or diminish the accomplishments or import to music history. Just don't meet your heroes.

I agree that they had a damn good run from 78-84 and had better commercial success with Sammy but as far as guitar playing goes he dominated for 3 or 4 years before better rock players started came along. I’m not talking about influencing people or popularity I’m talking about how guitarist evolve decade after decade. People love Hendrix but you can’t that he was a better guitar player than someone like Joe Satriani.

Saw VH twice, once with David once with Sammy. Both concerts were a clash of egos on stage. Eddie fought with both singers.. it was seriously uncomfortable to watch. The music was good but the shows sucked because of it.

Being old enough to have been fans of both Jerry and Ed, I can understand Garcia's gripe on EVH's flurry of notes. But Eddie often showed an emotional depth that one typically wouldn't hear in his radio hits. The deep cuts were where his mind & heart were given a brief respite from the duties of a rock god. Jerry's soloing always struck a deep chord within me, and his unmistakable technique was a huge influence on my jamming style. Their "beef" is a fabrication, I believe.

For a guy who claimed to have never listened to Van Halen's albums, Jerry Garcia sure had a lot to say about Eddie's music.
When you're a groundbreaking legend, you will either be loved or hated by others, and that just comes with the territory. I'm sure EVH didn't lose any sleep over his detractors.

Finger tapping. Harmonic tapping. Volume swells with the dotted eighth note. He play hard rock with a swing feel much of the time. He embraced the Steinberger trans trem. Played with the guitar on his lap occasionally. He was athletic as hell on stage. He painted his guitars iconic patterns. The intro to Meanstreet speaks for itself. Detuning for heaviness like on Unchained.
Other than being a decent guitarist, I have no clue why you would put Garcia and VH in some kind of comparison. VH also wrote beautiful music. He jammed. There is little to compare.

EVH had one speed fast all the time. He chained smoked. He seemed like he had a chip on his shoulder. Almost like his music was an Attention Deficit Disorder therapy. Obviously talented yet flawed. He looked like he could never relax. Maybe cigarettes and alcohol helped. Still he is legendary guitar player.

I have not investigated Van Halen's body of work, but I heard all their popular songs on the radio and MTV and I never felt that Eddie's solos were expressive of anything or arose form the motifs in the surrounding songs. They all seemed to be out-of-context flurries of notes and noise. He was a virtuoso guitarist whose work was--to me--sterile and boring. (The same is true of Buckethead, an equal to Van Halen in sheer virtuosity.)

Ed shat the bed in that interview saying Randy had learned everything from him, which is absolutely nonsense. They sounded nothing alike, Randy was more educated than Ed on guitar.
But the problem is 30 years later Ed had a chance to take the high road and walk back those comments in the Randy Rhoads doc, the original effort with Margolis and Klein, but he refused to do an interview essentially making too many demands.
He had some hang up with Randy, probably because Randy beat him out in a reader's poll for best guitar player in a U.K sounds magazine..

Roth is an egomaniac and great showman. Ed was an alcoholic for most of his long career. Ed was a gifted composer and arranger, he created a style of guitar playing that shaped a generation of guitarists.

When I think of influential guitarist Jerry Garcia does not enter my mind. I've read countless interviews with rock guitar players and I can't think of one that cited Garcia as an influence. Maybe that guy in Phish might think he's great. The greatest thing I can think of that Jerry Garcia influenced was Cherry Garcia ice cream and I think that is way better than any Greatful Dead album.

I used to think Eddie was somewhat overrated until I heard 'Beat It ' and then when I saw the live videos and how tight he was and rhythm lead both way up there improv ..I realized how great he was .
He even sat in with the Letterman Band and fit right in but he was great ...gifted Guitarist - who worked really hard...
It definitely sounded good in that song but it’s one of his easier solo’s to play.🍻

I always liked Jerry Garcia. But his words and comments come across that he was more jealous of EVH than just be nonchalant. I do think Eddie had some demons….like we all do.
