I'm from SE Asia. My mom loves to fry this fish, but she prepped it before frying by boiling it first with salt and another local ingredient that can neutralise the fishiness, and at the same time enhance the fish's natural flavour. I have no English name for the ingredient but it is called asam keping/gelugur. It is sour-ish.

Had mackerel for the first time last Christmas. My aunt and uncle are sponsoring a Ukranian family that immigrated to the US to get them on the path to citizenship. The Ukranian family made them some smoked mackerel to try. None of them ore my cousins liked it, so they brought it to family Christmas. I tried it and loved it. They ended up giving me the rest of it. Absolutely delicious fish.

@Drownedinblood depends on how you look at it, the people themselves make higher than avrage but the country itself has the gdp of a poor African nation.
we also didn't get that many imagrants that weren't us solders stationed here deciding to stay until after the financial frenzy that lead to the 2008 financial crisis. The government decided to bail out the people instead of the big companies so we ended up with a stable but inflated currency and an economy proped up by tourism after the old sports rotted away. Polish people are the largest Immigrant population here so they got hit with all the standard immigrant hating stigmas that exist in almost every country, the boomers were the last to grow up poor enough to actually need to get free fish but they did so by going to the harbour when fishing boats came back and asking for food on the table and they usually got a bag full of fish that the fishermen couldn't sell for any number of reasons but notably they had a selection of fish to like and dislike, nowadays you can't really just go to the harbour ask for a bag of fish you might get something but not frequently enough to support yourself, however if you go fishing on the harbour you're practically guaranteed to get a shit ton of mackerel and all the first generation polish imagrants with little money to their names knew how to cook it so it tastes good so while everyone's growing up with enough money to be picky eaters you have polish people fishing for food in plain view catching the only thing there is to catch something Icelandic parents didn't know how to make taste good at a time when a lot of older people were making xenophobic coments and jokes so it stuck as a stereotype and because there was truth to it people perpetuated the stereotype even when they had no negative intent partially because thats just what dad or granpa says.
A lot of polish people who don't need to fish to survive nowadays still fish for food because its what they grew up with or they just want some delicious fresh fish so I doubt the stereotype will go away any time soon.
