To have a pro give this kind of a lesson is an absolute godsend. Don't take this video for granted, folks! This is gold. And she's giving it to you for FREE! :)
A little tip for anyone doing a video, film your intro and outro BEFORE you do your dancing, you don’t want to be out of breath , flushed, sweaty or look tired when you are up close to the camera. Good luck to everyone!!! 😊👍🏻
If anyone is looking for free editing software with precise color grading and curves adjustments, you can look up DaVinci Resolve. There are tutorials on how to do everything available on youtube. There is also a very precise exporting tool that allows you to use the exact format the audition wants.
I got waitlisted for uncsa!!! I wish I had this when I was recording that video but ahhh i’m so happy even though it’s not an full acceptance there’s still the chance of getting in!
Wow, I'm not even a ballerina. Just a ballet enthusiast who is a frustrated ballerina... and I'm loving your videos. I appreciate how you coach dancers and I love how you also told them not to take it personally if they're not hired. You have a really good heart and all these tips are gold. OMG. You're a generous and beautiful person Katie. 😊
That colour looks so beautiful on you, and you're looking so healthy in your hair and eyes and skin, it's so lovely to see! Edit: for sound, it's not ideal but to try and smooth out any choppiness in sound between clips you can fade the sound out of the first clip and fade it back in for the second, it's not great but if you're in a real bind with choppy sound it might help it sound a little smoother.
Thank you so much! This is so helpful! You are such an inspiration to me! Thanks Katie for all you do for us! (Also, your hair looks beautiful. Would you do a hair video for us?
This was fascinating, Katie! Thank you! Mind you, at 56 and my rather rotund shape, I don’t think the Royal Ballet will be calling me any day soon! xxxxxxxxxxx
I love how active you are on YT with all of us! I really missed seeing you on camera frequently and having you in my daily life again brightens up my mood every time.
so sweet of you to offer all your combinations from classes here!! I'm sure that will be super helpful for lots of students, and I know this video in itself will be helpful to a lot of people during this time. To all those auditioning: Good Luck!!
My family can't afford ballet zoom classes cause we already have online normal classes so I just use UA-cam to search the ballet but I don't have an actual ballet lesson but am in a competition ,and Kathryn, your hair is amazing and you look lovely
Here I am never going to audition or anything like that for ballet, but I just love this so much 😍 When I was 18 I got told that I had psoriasis arthritis, and many in my family have different kinds of arthritis, so my first thought was: this is the time go dance ballet 😍 I dance 1,5 years with kids, around 10-11 I believe, and it was so fun. I got a osteomyelitis in my thigh the last year before moving away, so I had to stop, and I also have a hip condition that also made it more difficult. I have now got a new hip, at 34, but I still do some small ballet steps just for fun 😍 Thank you for sharing and giving this gift both for the ballet dancers that are doing zoom and video auditions, and for all of the rest of us, and giving people the opportunity to use your stuff is such a blessing for both dancers and teachers, so that says so much about your sweet personality 💕😊 Love from Johanne, Norway 😊
I was was so anxious about getting a job until summer with this hole pandamic thing. You just took me to a place where I can be at ease with myself and not worrying all night and day! I'll show this my parents so they understand the situation better. You are priceless and kind! Thank you!
I have not been in a ballet studio for many years and I am sitting here watching this attentively haha. Just found your videos and so excited to follow
Thank you! Well it's slightly darker! So that has made it look FAR healthier. But I try to only wash it every 2/3 days. And I always use a heat protectant.
Thank you Katie for all of the information, for your care and the resources. I literally have no use for the knowledge at the moment, since I am not planning to audition for anything, but I still watched this video because I simply love listening to you. You're such a honest, beautiful person. And I know that lots of other dancers have utterly needed such a video and were given a huge advantage due to this video. Thank youuuu!😘❤
I am so excited to be auditioning for SAB!!! This video will be so helpful when I am recording. I am currently a student at PNB so I hope that helps as SAB seems to like PNB kids 😬🤞🤞🤞🤞
Your kindness and generosity is exceptional! Many years past auditioning but watched this in its entirety, great tips. Love that you encourage the use of your combinations.
Yesss Kathryn this was so helpful. BTW love the new updated version of the schedule. Would love it if you kept it that but if not no problem. 😍You Kathryn!
What if your body shows harsh angular angles and your personality is very soft? How do you choose a part then? Should you emphasize the body shape or the personality?
Choosing a good variation is a really good skill and its sooooo important thank you so much!! Do you think you could do a full video on variations and which to choose?! It would be so great thanks!!!
This is priceless, excellent job, Katie! You do look super happy and in your own skin so much more now! Thank you for all you do for all of us dancers :)
So you talked about the cut for your legs and the color, but what about the neckline cut for each body type? What makes you look smaller or makes your shoulders wider, etc?
This is such a blessing , I plan on auditioning for an Arts University in Philadelphia .I am so confused and intimidated . with everything having to do with auditioning from set up editing to choreo. Your a Godsend .Thank you.
I would love to hear your thoughts about basic zoom ballet class. Is it true wearing light colors is better for teachers to see? What about angles and anything else that would be helpful for students to know as we head into more lockdown. Thank you!
Love the earrings and your hair is beautiful! I am not auditioning but I enjoyed this video anyway and loved the editing tips. Your editing is so good!
Hi Kathryn! Could you please make a quarantine ballet program to stay active? In my country (Greece) everything is closed and i can't go to ballet classes so i must keep exercising at home. :(
I know the chances you see this are minimal- but Ben Platt has a song called ‘In Case you don’t Live Forever’ when you do Katie & Friends I think this song would be beautiful to dance to. Please listen to it it’s a beautiful song and I think it lends itself to ballet very well.
Thank you for this very useful video!! I would love it if can do a video on improving our upper body? I'm always told that I lack upper body presentations and I would really want some tips on improving it. Thanks!!
what would’ve you recommend for music? i dont have a recording camera so i record on my phone, but i can’t play music at the same time. do you have any tips for that?
Thank you so much for this video! It was very helpful especially for this year. I just had a question about zoom. What would you say is the best camera angle to set up my computer at? Is it better to have it from the front or from the side? Love you so much 💜
Thank you so much for posting this! I’ve been so stressed about filming my audition videos for companies this year and this was so helpful!💕 you’re a huge inspiration Katie!
Hey Kathryn! Just wondering if you have any ideas for someone who has a really hard time finding pointe shoes that work for them. It's not just that I can't find a perfect pair, I can't even find a pair I liked enough to buy again. I have tried many, many different shoes and I've spent multiple hours at a time being fitted before. I feel like I have tried every shoe at this point and I'm getting kind of discouraged.
If the school offers a choice for a summer intensive audition - submit a video or audition via zoom, which would you do to increase likelihood of acceptance into program?
Hi ! I'm a beginer dancer from France, thank you so much for your beginer videos wich are in the same time really easy to understand and really hard to do. Could you please do, if you have the time, a video to learn how to jump correctly and to give us some exercices to improve ourselves. Again, thank you very much for this UA-cam Chanel (and sorry for my mistakes in english)
Thank you so much for doing this video! For pointe combinations, should I just concentrate on center combinations and which should I focus on if the company doesn't specify? Thank you very much especially if you see my question!
I am sending videos audition for companies/studio companies, but do you recommend filming the barre and centre on pointe, even though the company doesn’t specify? Thank you so much for your wonderful tips!
Hi Katie ! Thank you so much ! I do have one question, for filming a ballet barre , should the camera be a side or front view? maybe an in the middle angle? So thankful for these tips
I would say side or front - middle angle can distort lines and make your leg look uncrossed even if it is! I would say it's easiest to see technique from the side, but it's really what you're most comfortable with.
I bought the Harlequin mat, like you recommended, and wanted to use it for online ballet class, but it's sticky, esp. during tendus. Are they supposed to be sticky? Anything you can suggest to make movement easier?
To have a pro give this kind of a lesson is an absolute godsend. Don't take this video for granted, folks! This is gold. And she's giving it to you for FREE! :)
When she said we could use her ballet combinations I was FLOORED!!!! SUCH A GEM!
Aww thank you. It's truly my pleasure!

I was about to buy a €70 course online about ballet auditions (too expensive for me) and you just came with this video for FREE OMG THANKS SO MUCH!!

Good luck to anyone auditioning!!!
Yeah same here, I just love Katie and I found this interesting 😅
Same here! 😁

I love you Katie your hair looks so healthy and long I am so happy for you and Chris hope you are doing great 😊

What about the men? What do they wear for the audition? Do they wear a clean white shirt with black tights or any other color shirt with tights?
Yes- I would do clean white shirt and either black or gray tights!

do you think there would be any pro or con to wearing tights over or under a leotard? and also, what angle would you recommend filming barre?
If you're auditioning for a school you should wear tights under your leotard but if you're auditioning for a company it probably doesn't matter
