BMW bring money withya
Hey Scotty, is the Mazda CX50 a good buy? I don't want the turbo because I hear it might cost more to maintain or it might burn out. Otherwise, I'd be interested in the CX50 turbo. I like as big of tires as I can get on the CX50. The goofy front of the CX5 is not my cup of tea. It sticks out too far and the CX50 resembles it unless it has 19 or 20 inch wheels. Then the curves are better in the front to my eye.

When I was a young driver back in the 1960’s the epitome of reliability was German cars, especially Mercedes and BMW. How far the mighty have fallen.
BMWs are reliable again. Just very recently. Idk if I’d trust them to go over 300k like an older Toyota but they should run trouble free for the first 100k or so nowadays. Ever since the B55 they’ve really stepped up reliability
@@themightiness
Like everything else it depends on what you want as a result and how much you enjoy what you get. I have always loved cars but honestly $50,000 for a car that falls apart at 100,000 miles and then costs a fortune to keep running is not what I want. If that makes you happy so be it.
Imagine if the same fate happens to Toyota 🤯
@@MaanHabibi42 Horror!!!
@@themightinessAnd after 100k then what ???? I'm sorry, but in today's world if a car falls apart after 100k miles I consider it a piece of crap.... A well maintained vehicle today should last AT LEAST 250-300k miles without major issues.
Llived in Germany in the 80s,. had 3 Mercedes , never ever a BMW.. the Mercs of the 80s were bullet proof,
Those 80s diesel Mercs will outlive every single one of us.
My 450SEL had over 425,000 on it and it still drive on rails. Though the engine was starting to get tired and would probably only last another 200,000.
@8MunchenBayern8 my neighbor had one of those back in the early 90s, thing was a tank
@@8MunchenBayern8theres a lot of japanese diesel engines in asia that are bulletproof but the government always gets in the way. Lobbyist
They don't build them like they used to that's why not too many people buy them.
In New Zealand we really owe Scotty a lot of thanks. Really nice looking BMW cars are sitting in car sale yards in NZ for really cheap prices. Some people here still get scammed into buying one.,.... most of us dodge BMWs like an Amway Representative 😂
My siter and I have owned BMWs for 20 years and almost never a problem. All of thwm were wonderful cars. Drive like no other.
Same here. They covered the problems they had.
I have been driving BMW for just about a year now and I have to say that they just have the driving feel about them that no other car has. If you do the work yourself, know where to buy parts, I buy mine from FCP euro with the lifetime replacement warranty, then you will save a lot of money. Do you maintenance and you will have a very reliable and fun car.
that may be true, but maintenance in general is going to be very expensive no matter what on bmw's .. its just the way its built and as you would probabyl would guess.. most people dont have the tools and proper experience to do our own maintenance on our own cars lol
@@cesarpdc My answer to that is if your going to own a BMW, you need to either have a good income or know how to do the work yourself. I had no mechanical experience and I learned to work on my BMW just by watching youtube videos and some help from friends. Parts are a little more expensive though like you said.
I am in Australia and do much the same as you. As a BMW owner of over 7 years (2007 X3 3.0d - 6 cyl diesel - not available in the US). I love my BMW and it is a great car to drive. The only mechanical failure I have had in all that time has been the harmonic balance wheel. All my plastic crap is still in good condition.
Haha I just bought my dad one for Father’s Day. Life is about smiles per gallon Scotty. I want him to enjoy driving while he still can.
$10k in repairs? Must have been at a BMW stealership. $2k if he takes it anywhere else.
Actually the 10k was my father and you're correct- he took it to the dealer. On visit it needed a throttle actuator and an abs module. 5.5k for that repair. I've done all the rest but rod bearings, vanos line and motor mounts because a lift was needed. Went to an indy that does it all day long and was $5k for that visit. Most of the parts that have failed have been oem parts by outside manufactures.
I know an ex BMW owner who would collect his near-new 5-series from a service (nothing wrong with it) and BMW would hand him a bill for $1200-$1500 dollars.
Naturally he would ask why the service bill was so high, any the BMW staff would always have some excuse ready for the $1200-1500 service bill.
I wouldn't drive BMW even if the car cost $0:00.
My friend who had the beautiful 5-series, now drives a Toyota instead.
People throwing away money on stuff they don't need is the foundation of the American economy.
No truer words have ever been typed.
American economy is as follows
1. Retail
2. Financial gimmicks
3. A tiny amount of actual production
You can thank democrats for the fall of this one productive nation
@@austintomkewitz3981And then they take it all in taxes so our military can take care of the rest of NATO countries
@@austintomkewitz3981 retail is 6% of the economy. The US is a service economy and a very unequal one at that. So the average man doesn’t have a very good experiential understanding of what the big whales are since they don’t use most services like rich people do
All these car brands are coasting on their reputation of the past, imo. For $170,000, shouldn't this BMW come with wings, and fuselage? xD
Or at least a rear rotor :)
Considering a Cessna starts at 250k, no
This was a flagship high performance car with a screaming 9000 rpm V10 that competed against Ferraris, Maseratis, AMG Mercedes, etc. and planes are significantly more expensive than the msrp of this car.
Maybe a lifetime warranty
We have a BMW with the B58 engine. It's been the most dependable engine I've ever owned. Granted, I would not buy a V8 or V10 BMW.
The B58 is one hell of an engine
I drove a 1989 320i back in 1991 and it was an awesome car to drive - fun, peppy and handled well too
My sister had one of those. It was excellent. Now she has a hybrid X5. It’s brand new and had a couple recalls, the windshield randomly cracked, and the check engine light came on several times for the electrical system. Yeah she shouldn’t have bought a new BMW. Id’ve kept the old one and modernized it.
I took the interior components from a wrecked BMW X5 and put it in a project 4Runner to give it a nicer interior. It came out very nice and it hasn’t had any recalls or random check engine lights. Best of both worlds? Without the new BMW hassle…
That V10 is notoriously bad for the rod bearings and the VANOS pump crapping the bed. It was rushed to market.
When cars have horrible engines, can you replace the engine for say this car with a reliable Toyota engine?
@@michaelwalker8250 The entire point of this car is the feel and sound of a racing derived V10 that scream to almost 9000 rpm. A boring Toyota engine will stop the entire fun.

It's sad to see what has become of German made cars. I was stationed in West Germany from 1979-1981 and I owned and drove a 1973 2002Tii. It was orange in color, a four door, with a two liter engine that produced 135 HP with a manual four speed transmission. It was considered a hot rod by German standards and it was, of all the cars I ever owned, the most fun to drive!
2002 Tii was the best BMW ever and lots of fun, I had a 1974, not Tii, and it made my best driving memories, its not that much powerful, but I don’t know how they made this vehicle so much fun to drive!!
Who installed the extra doors?
150k miles for an f1 derived engine and transmission is quite impressive.
Scotty Kilmer reminds me of Joe Cocker at Woodstock.
I have a 2007 BMW X3 3.0d (6 cyl turbo diesel - not available in the US). It only has 153,000km on the clock. It had 101,000km on the clock when I purchased 7 years ago. Because of its age I have carried out a lot of preventative maintenance myself. The parts aren't prohibitively expensive with many good quality (non-Chinese) mechanical parts available. My car drives beautifully and like the owner of the M3 there I have upgraded to a very good Android system. I have even upgraded the sound system with improved speakers and an amplifier. If you really look after these cars you will be rewarded with a great car to drive. I am in Australia.
I'm 80 and I have never spent 10k on all of my cars, either. Of course, the newest I own is a 2014 C7. I'm afraid to buy anything newer, especially with 2 liter engines & those too loose rings. Not to mention all the crazy electronics that seems to be a gremlin in all.
BTW: Maybe the Germans are trying to get back us over WW2🤪
Theye working on ww3 ,soon.
Look at this way. The Germans got back at Great Britain by scooping up Bentley, Rolls Royce, and MiniCooper. And BMW, Audi, and Mercedes sell expensive to fix cars in the USA. Fugg 'em, make mine a Chevy.
Lots of humor and laugh Scotty, I really enjoyed it, beside it was useful. To me, I keep my trusted old Chevy Malibu, since I am a retiree, and it's perfectly all right and fully paid too. 🚗
I like the video and WOW amazing TY so much ,,Keep up the great work
In my 2008 Z4 I had to replace the hydraulic pump for the convertible top. It was a pain to get to. I moved it into the trunk because the lines started to leak after the pump was replaced. So I could refill it easier when it lost some of its fluid. Fun to drive but expensive to repair.
why the hell did they use hydraulics when an electric motor would work much like my 2007 solara which still works great no fuss no mess
@@user-zh9ow3jz1t Unknown. Not to mention it was like $30 for a pint of it from BMW.
@@jonathanabramson thanks for the reply
I've had a few BMW's over the years, older ones from the 80s & early 90s are genuinely good cars in comparison to what else was available at the time. Once you get into the 2000s though, build quality goes out the window & reliability is appalling. I'd never own another one.
Japan is missing this market, they should do a cabrio with 4 seats
been a mechanic for 20 years, its funny when people say how much they love this bmw or that mercedez i just say yeaaaa... no thanks. dont care what it is. not worth it
What people didn't know is that this engine was specified to run 10W60 oil from BMW and because this oil was so thick and the clearances in the rod bearings were so tight, there was improper lubrication.
To prevent this issue a 5W40 oil viscosity was the solution.
It was such a simple fix but BMW had their heads stuck up their backsides in that era.
I love your information and content because it's free 🆓.
That guy’s possibly the most dedicated BMW fan on earth & also most competent home-spun Beemer mechanic as well
I bought a brand new BMW 3 series in 2016 and done some tours around Europe ever-since and just spent on oil and filter and brake pads. Great cars from BMW.
Lexus are always the best luxury premium car brand to go with
M5s are not luxury cars they are high performance saloon cars. Lexus has nothing that compares. The RC F has inferior performance for its price tag. If you're old and don't care about performance a Lexus is ideal.

I had the 650i in rare manual format. We didn't get the M6 in manual in the UK. The 650i was a GREAT car and brilliant value, very reliable. The M6 was a VERY different prospect with that unreliable V10!
If one has money...money pit is not an issue.
That's what's kept me off BMW motorcycles all these years.

I had a few BMWs in my lifetime, never had any problems with them other than the regular maintenance needed for them, great cars, go buy one.
I have two 15 yr old Toyota’s and love them.
Bought a 2012 X5 E70 in 2020. About 5K in repairs for the water pump and all oil gaskets. Since then, 60K miles and really nothing other than normal maintenance. Trick was to find 😂a one owner one that was well maintained.
Find yourself a good local independent mechanic who knows BMW well and use them. Don't go to dealerships.
I had a 2008 Z4. I had the same issue with my headlights in 2018. I had to rebuild the wires for it.
Scotty glad you verified my research I drive a 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan and possibly next year I might trade it in for another new SUV. I know you mentioned Acura MDX are great cars to drive and they are very safe cars to drive. I have seen a lot people mentioning on them not a lot of issues as well. Still keeping in mind with Volkswagen Tiguan and I will also test drive a Subarura Accent as well. I was looking at a Toyota 4Runner as well
Classic Scotty!
Wife owns 2021 X3 m40i, only 30K miles into ownership, perfect car except run flat ties (now discarded for conventional tires). Car could not be any more fun to drive(sport & sport+ modes). The B58 is an amazing inline 6. Horror stories like Scotty’s current seem to be mostly with their V8’s/V10 models? BMW’s 3 & 5 models with the inline 6 seem much more reliable.

Any high performance car is going to cost you absurd amounts of money to maintain. Porsche, Corvette, Ferrari, Audi, etc. Heck, I had a Lexus that if taken to the dealer would eat you alive. You can save a lot of money if you can find a good shadetree mechanic or learn to do it yourself. I do most of the work on my cars myself. Not just to save money, but because I don't trust anyone else to do as good a job as I'd do.

Sad to see such a beautiful car be such a bad deal. I've always liked BMWs, though I've never driven any of them, I always assumed them to be a step up from the Mercedes and Audi I have driven... Of course, being a lover of Tesla's now, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that in trying to control the cost of the complicated mess that every ICE vehicle, especially every performance ICE vehicle, is, some companies will cut the wrong corners.

Got a 2010 135i e82 manual 200 000km. The biggest issue I've had is oil pan and oil filter housing gaskets. Bought it for 40k in 2013 could get about 18-20k (Canadian) now just because its not DCT. 90% highway miles and have never tracked/dragged or crashed it.
