At 40yo I have discovered my true passion for learning all from a YT video. Now I’m contemplating my whole career path and probably going to start engineering school soon.

Work done doesn't depend on the path, so it'd be Wg = mgy, gravity is a conservative force so it doesn't really depend on the path taken, say if it were friction it'd be different as friction is a non - conservative force.
The reason the work done in the first problem (1B) is zero, us because there was no displacement or change in (delta)X. Therefore there is no work done.

sign error for Normal force but the magnitude of friction force, and work are correct. Sorry for the confusion.
