    Yeah, a pikey is a slang term (somewhat offensive/derogatory) mostly used in the UK to refer to people who are of the Traveller community. They're generally not well liked. They travel around and put their caravans wherever they want, don't pay taxes, don't care about the laws/police, and generally cause a niusance (make a mess of where they stay, steal, and lots of fighting since bare knuckle fighting is part of their culture and they learn to fight from a young age. Tyson Fury is from the travelling community btw). Pitt actually does an impressive job of the 'irish'/pikey accent

  • @mararundell2500
    @mararundell2500 Рік тому +19

    Great choice guys! You can't go wrong with a Guy Richie film. In old English a pike was a road. A "pikey" or "piker" is a person who travels on a road or pike (think turnpike) so gypsys, or in this case the traveling Irishmen, were known as pikers or pikeys.

    • @catfrab
      @catfrab Рік тому +3

      As I understand it, the "pike" is the turnpike or tollgate on a road where you need to pay a fee to enter a town or use a road. In days of old the gypsies would be prevented from entering a town at the turnpike so would set up camp there until moved on and so became referred to as "pikies".

    "Pikey" is a derogatory term for the Travellers of UK who are a mix of Irish and Roma-people. A more recent media with them in a major role is Peaky Blinders.
    Roma-people are also derogatorily and erroneously called Gypsies. They originally came to Europe from Northern India during the Middle Ages, but the Bible had almost no mention of those lands (only one mention in Kings), so people though they came from Egypt.
    Because Egyptians were the villains in Bible, this gave a good excuse to discriminate the Roma.

    The scene in which Bullet Tooth Tony beats a guy with car door, picks up the phone and says: "Bon Jour" is actually a scene from Guy Ritchie's previous movie “Lock Stock and Two smoking barrels”. Boris was trying to steal the diamond, the American guy with the gray hair and mustache (cousin Avi) was supposed to be the original recipient. There's a lot going on, it's rapid-fire, and some of those different accents are difficult to follow. It's a lot easier on second viewing.
    Man I love this movie, there's just so much style. I feel bad for anyone trying to edit this down for UA-cam, because basically every line of dialogue is witty and hilarious.

    Guy Ritchie is a very famous UK director, and this is one of his best-known works. He's known for his clever humor and ultra-stylish directing style. He's also married to Madonna (or was). Guy Ritchie discovered Jason Statham and gave him his first film role in the movie "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels", another Guy Ritchie classic. "Snatch" is probably my favorite of Ritchie's works, and I still quote it to this day.
    Ritchie is known for his crime/caper/comedy films, and his star-studded casting. I highly recommend "Lock, Stock", Statham's first film, and Ritchie's more recent film starring Gerard Butler and Idris Elba called "Rock'n'Rolla". He also directed/wrote a popular and well-received film adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. All of those films are excellent, and there is a third on the way. I highly recommend checking those movies out. Should have a great time with them. Really, anything directed by Guy Ritchie I would recommend. He's considered one of the best for a reason. Always really fun, and/or really trippy/twisty. Speaking of twisty, he did a lesser known, and more recent flick with Statham and Andre 3000 called "Revolver", that'll mess with your head. Even if you don't react to that one, definitely worth a watch. The man knows how to write a twist, that's for sure. If you guys do more Guy Ritchie, I'll tune in every time.

    I’m sure someone has already commented on this but Boris is not the one that came from America
    Boris the Blade or Boris the Bullet Dodger is Russian and is the guy who couldn’t die
    Avi is the guy who came from America
    The first time I saw this movie- I didn’t understand why Boris would defy death but after multiple viewings- it came to me that his name is the Bullet Dodger and that’s why he seems unkillable!!
    It’s pretty funny actually
    And yes- the accent is hard to understand but after awhile it is why the movie is hilarious!
    I love this movie and it absolutely does get better after you’ve seen it at least once

    A pikey is a slur used in the UK, referring to people who travel around the country in a community. So when you said gypsy you were right, however that is the slur term we use in the states to describe the same community. The term that has been approved by the people in that culture is Romani. I honestly just learned that the term gypsy was considered offensive myself a couple years ago, so not passing judgement, just passing on the information. Love the reactions, you are both fantastic and I can not wait to see what is next.

    I haven't seen anyone mention this yet; notice how Tommy - who's kind of portrayed as a wimp and maybe a little naive - ends up being the most heroic character in the movie. He shows up at the arcade with his fake gun and bluffs the henchmen just long enough to rescue Turkish. Tommy knows full well that gun doesn't work by that point, but he goes in for his friend regardless. He's pretty ineffectual for all the other parts of the movie, but that one scene is where he shines.

    Great choice guys, and as you are going down this rabbit hole you have to check out Lock, Stock and 2 smoking barrels, wicked film, this was the follow up movie by the same director although they aren’t linked in any way. Enjoy guys 👍
    Had to come on and add to my comment guys, Boris wasn’t the guy from America, that was Avi, Boris died in the corridor after being repeatedly shot by Tony (Vinnie Jones). Pikey is a derogatory term that refers to the traveling community (those who live in caravans), they aren’t thought of very well in the UK as they park their caravans in areas that aren’t theirs, they leave a huge mess, they usually find ways to scam the residents of the areas they stay in whether it’s laying driveways or something like that, the work is never done properly and as soon as they have outstripped everything they can from an area they move on somewhere else. The police can never find them, they band together snd basically do as they please hence people dislike them.

    Franky 4 fingers is dressed as an Orthodox Jewish elder. The diamond trade in Amsterdam is mega huge and there's a lot of Jewish dealers.
    Franky is going to bring it to Doug the Head, a jewelry shop owner, to sell. In turn, he's going to sell it to cousin Avi in New York.
    One of the guys in Franky's crew tips off Boris the Russian dude who plans to steal it from Franky so he can sell it.
    Anyway, it goes from there but I wanted to give the basic start of it. You will notice more things when you rewatch it. Excellent flick.

    What I respect about Brad Pitt is that people in the US know nothing about the Irish Travellor community in the UK, and trust me, they are not people to be messed with and they live off the grid and move around a lot. Bradd Pitt chose to spend two weeks in a campsite to understand the culture. That's dedication coming from the UK I wouldn't have done that

But also a bit strange for me, since I was around in the 1970s and listened to the original BBC radio series of The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy - in which Alan Ford (Brick Top) plays a character called Roosta. When I watch Snatch, I still keep hearing that character as well in Brick Top's voice :D

    Pikey is not derogatory it's just another name for gypsy. If you have the DVD of this movie you can watch it with Pikey subtitles so you can understand what Brad Pitts character Mikey is saying.
    This is one of my favorite movies however, my first time watching it there was definitely the language barrier. After watching it a few time you start to understand the slang words more. Like "blagged" means robbed, they kind of explain that in the move. Or the word "bloke", means guy/dude essentially.
