I miraculously found this video today! I have been watercoloring for 6 years. The anxiety it gives me is not fun, or good for my spirit. I've become totally blocked. I bought myself a beautiful 120 set of Sennelier pastels and have been doing literallly ANYTHING to keep myself from the easel. You said exactly what I needed to start healing. I am SO afraid, so NERVOUS, so ANXIOUS about even preparing to paint. Today is the day, baby. I'm cutting down some paper and getting busy. I am setting a goal of three small paintings for today. Thank you for being a balm to my soul, and being such a help to all. You've got me inspired! Stay well, Nia.
This is timely for me. Been very sick, out of the hospital but not out of the woods. Much improved but very weak. Haven't drawn or painted in... maybe...six months. Trying to build back my enthusiasm because, face it, there's no going on without it. I suppose that is a sort of block right now.
I have been painting for 75 years, I am now 83, when I feel 'blocked' I PAINT, and the soon I am having so much fun that I paint for hours and hours. I feel that God blessed me with this talent and I know he knows what he's doing, so why should I doubt Him and myself. It never ceases to amaze me the incredible number of paintings that live inside tubes of paint. I am happy to say I have a following of clients, and sell my work regularly. Thank you, Malcomb, for your time and heartfelt encouragement to artists.
Thank you Malcolm for the encouragement, you really help us with your friendly smart advice. I must say that your Courses and Demonstrations help me a lot too.Watching your relaxed painting is infectious. And when you say : "you can do it",I imagine that I really can😀 I remember the words of the great architect Jože Plečnik, who was born in our small Slovenia, but was admired all over the world. His advice was : "if you are blocked in creativity, keep drawing! THE HAND WILL FIND IT."
Thank you,Malcolm! I have never had a creative rut before, and couldn't understand when the others talked about it. This month I was really busy, and trying to paint became difficult.... For the first time... Now I know what to do: just plan painting for even half an hour, and do it! I Even 10 minutes sketch keeps you in a creative flow! I fully agree with you on the perfectionism as well. It is the biggest obstacle ever for any development and growth!!😍
When I'm stuck or insecure how to proceed I watch movies like these to get me inspired again. To hear again why I'm doing it although deep down inside I know it. I'm going through some pictures that are possible candidates for a little painting or I'm looking at other painters work. Thanks again for the inspiration Malcolm. Keep up the good work.
Its been a funny old year and I haven't done as much painting as usual. I sat down today and scratched off 3 attempts before I left something on the board. Its still not a great painting but at least I felt like I had done something. I feel like I need to change gears and its probably as good a time as any to learn something new. Good advice here.❤
I found sort of by accident the catalyst in unfinished or failed plein air landscapes. I figure I have nothing to lose so I am free to play around, try out nutty ideas, etc… before I know it I’ve completed a few small pieces that, to me, are “fresh and exciting” (as you would say). Thank you, Malcom, for your contributions.
This came on the right Moment… Thank you. Two years ago my husband said: I see so much paintings… it piles up.. That was the start of an unhappy period until now. I struggle with his words. I felt not being Seen…its like a eraser doing his job.I saw it as a attaque against me as a person. How must I Go on? Smaller art? On paper perhaps? More collages on paper, so I can store them easier? I even gave away some smaller artwork when we were on vacation . I just left them somewhere behind in several countries as a Gift. It blocked me. Your words helped me to continue. How: I do Not know yet, but your words hit me and Made me feel Alice again. So, thank you….
I'm happy to hear that. We all have paintings piled up, but painting is not about producing consumer goods. It is a spiritual and creative process. Those who oppose this are blocked. Those who create freely live in freedom. Sell, give, keep - its irrelevant in this context. Keep painting.
Join some outdoor shows or market place events. You could make greeting cards from your paintings and sell to family and friends. Be brave Alice, don't be pulled into someone's storm, pull them into your peace.
All very good points, and also timely for me. I appreciate the extra dose of encouragement!! The reward of getting back into painting after a long absence, is when I surprise even myself with something I create. The wins make going forward exciting. The work that’s not so good is an opportunity to figure out what went wrong and try again. So happy to WANT to paint again! Thank you for sharing.😊
Healing and try that to imply & combine with creativity is were I am now. I make small sketches again. Thank you for your understanding and infinte encouragement to never give up. 💟
I’ve been in a funk and had stalled as far as painting. This video has inspired me to break through! Thank you so much! I really need to see this video. It was a good boost for me. Love your videos.
Thank you Malcolm, the perfectionism malady is what I really struggle with, it’s soooo annoying! Judging by the comments, which may I say are very helpful as well, to see that others are going through these difficult moments too, makes me feel I’m not alone😘 a timely video indeed. Your calm and kind words are good advice that comes from one who knows what it is to go through all the ups and downs of an artist 😅 I love listening to what you have to say while watching you paint. A beautiful little painting as always! Can’t wait to get back to my studio now😘
Hi Malcolm- I have been following you for awhile now, and I always get a kick out of your demonstrations. At first I wasn't sure, because you have a very unemotional presentation, but it is the content which keeps me coming back. I feel as if I have gotten to know you now, and look forward to each video. By the way, what are those city scenes behind your shoulder? They are quite different than your usual style. What was the inspiration?
@@MalcolmDewey Well, Malcolm, I don't know how it is in South Africa out there, but let me explain you here in Europe: I always fall in doing compulsive shopping i.e. I buy art materials that I'm not sure if I really need or will use, just because they are on discount. The result is depression, lack of inspiration and finally stop of the activity!
@@My1chnnel2 Buying things is so easy today so it becomes away of avoiding the work that needs to be done. Remove the sources of temptation, give yourself a goal and start right away. Ask your family to hold you accountable. No excuses ♥️
