I've cracked the entire housing before just using a heavy chisel and heavy hammer (much easier with the Alloy ones) and it only took a few hits . . . and I didn't have to break out my grinder.
I dont cut all the way through the housing i like too get a good score on both sides i figured it would lesson the chance of big flying chunks of cast. Thanks for watching!
You tackled that well. You almost have to cut the casing in half to get the stator out. The vice grips on your punch bar was impressive to get back out, simple and effective, loved it. Couldn't help notice those shiny bricks on the work bench, very nice. Look forward to more of your videos. Cheers from Australia.
Those size of generator motors are hard to come by for free, and getting it on a truck to hull it home and removing it off the truck without damaging your truck or cement floor needs further equipment. I wonder what something that size would cost from the scrap yard and then compare that to what you sell it back to them for would be.
New sub.wow that's a huge copper moter bro. like your method how you get that copper out the cast armature. love the grinding action bro. Keep them videos rollen 👍

How much $ worth of copper for how much of your time, including collection of motor and disposal of scrap? How would that compare to a work shift labouring?
I enjoyed doing that. The motors are becoming hard to get these days with the price of everything people arent throwing them away there having them rebuilt. But i still have 20 or so laying in front of my garage.
Wow that's huge. What cutting disk are you using mate? I have the opportunity to get a 387lb electric motor for free but I don't have the ways or means to collect it unfortunately. I searched for a video on what the potential payout would be for something this size and maybe now after seeing your video and what you can get out of it it's definitely worth it and it's free. I might just have pay somebody with a truck and hiab to collect it for me. I'm from Western Australia and we are going through another heat wave 3 days of 41 degrees celcius. If i get this motor i will wait till its a lot cooler before i proceed with it. Thanks for showing us how to do it you sure made it look easy 👍
Scott thanks for watching! I will give u some advice.....if u have some basic tools and a car go too where the motor is and take it apart as far as u can it will make the pieces manageable. And i use dewalt cutting disks or i go to amazon and use go yonder disks. If u have any other questions or comments please do.
Damn. Decided to take 2 old motors home from a HVAC unit change out one is 360 lbs and the other is over 700. Getting the copper out is going to be a project. Thanks for showing how to do it.
Oh yeah most definitely!! I know the video was 20 minutes long but how long did it actually take you !? I just started my UA-cam channel and will be working on more stuff this weekend .
You forgot to deduct the insulation and varnish on and around the copper. Your method of removing the wire is much simpler if you just burned the whole stator over a fire for a short period of time. When you post a video, make sure you have your facts right.
Just recently commented on another similar you tube motor scrapping and nearly got my head bitten off for suggesting to burn it to clean it (it was an armature) , that’s the only way to clean one without spending fifty grand on a granulator( his suggestion, ) which are fine for household cable, no good for an armature. I could have got into the good and bad arguments regarding burning, but I decided it was better not to argue with someone who had clearly not spent a life time in the recycling business.
Burning the varnish and plastic off a stater is a great idea if you want cancer, fines, and terrible smells. You also don't need to deduct anything if you're selling it by weight, as most people who do this are.
The price paid is for copper wire with varnish- it is it's own price category. Burning it only makes the wire a bit easier to pull out but takes longer and you get much dirtier. You'd need to live on a farm to not annoy the neighbours with the burning lacquer smoke too. Once it's burned you have to wait for it to cool. Just too time consuming and dirty- it's a last resort.
No
I sell my motors whole, maybe i should start breaking them down. Great video and new sub .
Hahaha!!
Its a ton of work but definitely worth it. Thanks for watching and thank you for the sub!
Thanks for watching. Its alot of work but i enjoy it.

It was definitely a chore too load and unload by myself. I figured the price difference was about 15% for me.

What is the percentage of copper in DC electric motor?
Thats a great question! However I have no idea ive never taken apart a dc motor

Have you thought about wearing gloves
I really hate gloves. Thank you for commenting i hope you enjoy the videos
New friend here great video
Thanks big country scrapper welcome too the channel!
What is the tool your using to punch them out?
Okay this is going too sound dumb but its just the bar out of a squeeze clamp
I guessed at the beginning 36 lbs. I usually get around a 10% copper return on the larger motors.
Thanks for watching the videos I hope you enjoy them.
Or about 1 pound per horse power !
We will have to look more into to see if it hp/pound changes with larger vs smaller
@@midwestsmelters190 It is good to know if you have to buy the motor off of someone. That way you know what you will get out of it up front.
