I'm glad you make these videos Birdman.
Yeah. I agree. Cinemawins is a lot better at critique and pointing things out. I have actually improved at movie watching and observation just because of that.
Putting it as a "kidnapping situation" is actually putting it lightly. In addition to drugging her and tying her up (which is definitely kidnapping), he cursed her to be stalked by a murderous supernatural entity. That's definitely beyond kidnapping.

fun fact: On the Channel Deadmeat. On that video for It Follows, james says this is Detroit and that his girlfriend lived down the street from the house Jay lived in.
In the scene where they're drinking on the porch, they specifically say that the mother is sleeping because she has to get up at 5. Jeremy must have heard that but chose to make that sin anyway. Jay and Kelly's father is obviously either dead or has left the family, so the mother must be the breadwinner and work at inhumane hours. Most single moms do. Also, there are actually two scenes where the mother is shown. The first time, she can be seen huddled at the kitchen table in the background when Jay comes out of the pool. She just doesn't interact with anyone. In another scene, the mother is talking to another lady about Jay's date. While they're talking, the camera pans away from them onto the family portrait on the wall, so it's easy to miss.
It really is an unsettling movie. The imagery, the cinematography, the random people walking towards the screen that aren't in focus... everything about this movie is top fucking notch, and shows how well done horror can be done when the filmmakers take their time and actually care about their art.
I was hoping, if not expecting, to hear the Minor Threat song "It Follows," which pops into my head every time I think of this film: "The young ladies and their secrets In the soap that never ends. You know, I thought I'd outrun it When I crossed the tracks I thought I had gotten away But it tapped me on the back"
There's a scene where the entity appears as Jay's friend Yara. The real Yara is also there, running away with Jay. This is the scene where Jay tries to shoot the demon, a scene Jeremy saw and sinned for the shooting. I would argue that the scene is more powerful because Jay has to try and shoot a doppelgänger of her best friend. Imagine shooting your best friend in the head.
Watching movies through Birdman does help with actually knowing if the movie is good or not because you can see what is actually a sin of the movie and what isn't or is taken out of context.
@Thor Odinson They aren't tho. Jeremy breaks his own "rules" all the time for the sake of a 10+ minute video and says random shit that he then adds a sin to the movie for. If you wanna defend his shit then fine but at least get the rest of the fanboys together and get him to rename the channel "SatireSins", because its not the Cinema he sins anymore.
This film is greatness, one of my favorite from 2014. Nostalgia everywhere. Sin #26 is facts. CinemaSins young viewers think this is how you judge films/movies. Thanks for adding “The part CinemaSins cut out.” Sin #97 is too true. It’s worth showing twice, superb scare! Good content Th3birdman.
I think people take cinemasins too seriously, the whole joke is that he seeks out tiny inconsequential things in movies and tears them apart. It’s not meant to be taken as legitimate criticism, it’s just half-serious jokes.
BTW this movie does take place in the Detroit area as it shows Redford theatre which is a very famous location in the area as well as taking place in Sterling Heights and them saying that one of the characters works in an ice cream shop in Berkley. The reason that someone who is a WASP wouldn't want to go south of 8 Mile is because that denotes the border of Macomb County (where Sterling heights is) and Eastern Oakland County sharing a border with Detroit. There are quite a few people who have lived in the northern suburbs who haven't been to Detroit nor want to ever (particularly people who were young during the '67 riots).
I think it just hit me why the same two girls are in the theater twice: it's a nightmare, isn't it? Then just like the hipstery stuff, the person who is dreaming this may have seen the person once in real life, then the dream attaches significance to them by doing it again.
