It's of marginal quality, has terrible quality control problems, and there are much better alternatives on the market. By all accounts the Seiko SKX009 is a flawed watch - and yet I still love it. The SKX009 is definitely one of the worst watches I own but it's one of the watches I enjoy the most.

because in a world full of diver watches the SKX remains classical yet unique. it's not a direct homage, it has it's own style. amazing watch.
Very true.
I have the SKX007J and 009J. They will never leave the collection and mine includes Rolex, Omega and Tudor. They are iconic and every collector should have at least one.
Agreed
In my opinion, the lack of applied 'shiny' markers on the SKX is one of my favorite features. On most older dive watches, a printed dial was a fairly standard thing, and legibility was the most important aspect of their design, not flash. While possibly antiquated today, this gives the dial an older, more understated appearance compared to its contemporaries and makes it stand out from the crowd in a different way. In many ways, it's like an old sports car from the 1970's that never went out of production; it's features don't hold up to what many modern consumers demand, but there is a certain charm about it that is a reflection of it's era. And hey, if it ain't broke don't fix it! Haha
Sometimes I think I’d like to see them update the watch and create a more modern dial, and other times I think that this simple dial is part of the charm.
@@smuckerst8355 Which model? Most I've seen have applied markers, but I'd like to see one that didn't.
Edit: I just saw the new release of the Seiko 5 line, they look pretty dang cool!
Dude, my entire collection is now down to only my Speedie Pro and SKX009j. And I love it.
That’s a good spot to be. Good choices.
A great one two punch watch collection! 😉
Yep that is pretty much a fantastic two piece collection
Minimalism. Not a bad idea. Maybe I can work on that. And you chose wisely.
I’ve purchased a Seiko SKX 009 two weeks ago ...I love its looks, and felt I should own one 😊
Everyone should own one at some point!
I just bought one also.
Can't wait until I get it shipped to me!
Didn't want to wait for any price gouging or knock off 's to start since the news of them being discontinued.
I bought my first Seiko Divers watch in 1986 ,I was in Gitmo Cuba in the US Navy. and several people were wearing the seiko divers, they are a great tool watch and they did the job. this was my first automatic watch. if this watch had hand winding, and hacking it would be the perfect watch. no matter what I own the seiko is my first love. Outstanding video
There is a huge modding community and market out there, you can easily buy an NH36 movement and upgrade it to have the hacking and handwinding if you miss that much.
My 009 is the second most accurate watch in my 15-watch collection at-1.6 seconds a day. Only my Rolex Explorer II is more accurate.
I’m a simple man. I see JustBlueFish has uploaded a new vid, I click, sit back, and enjoy!
Thanks buddy I appreciate it! Hope you enjoyed the video.
Citizen is underrated a treat to affficionads
I recently reviewed a citizen dive watch. I loved it.
No question, but even Citizen has the NY0040, which shares a lot of the craptastic charm of the SKX line.
@@randynovick7972 As an owner of both SKX009 and Citizen NY0040 i think that Citizen is higher quality.
Design on the other side... Citizen is great, and I love its design, but SKX is just better looking.
SKX will never leave my collection, I bought it from my first pay check NY0040 might go, not any time soon though.
Awesome complete review looking for more
Thanks.
Thank you for another excellent review!
Yes, definitely a keeper in my book as well. Thank you for another excellent review!
Very nice video, Guy! Good shots and commentary 👍
Thanks buddy.
Thanks for the video. I have a SKX009 one a rubber strap and I love it. Flaws and all!
Wearing mine right now!
I recently purchased a Hamilton Khaki King about 2 weeks ago and I love it, that being said I still find myself coming back to my skx009. I bought my skx a little over a year ago and I find that the original bracelet is really comfortable. That being said I am wearing it on an Uncle Seiko oyster bracelet as I love the look and heft/quality of it more. My wrists being 7.5 inches the skx is the perfect size for me. I'd say the only negative is the movement, but it's not a huge deal for me.
Anyways, Another great video!
Thanks man. Good choice in the Khaki King by the way. Great watch.
@@JustBlueFish thanks! Yeah the khaki king is my first swiss watch in my collection, really digging it!
After watching your review, (and a few others) I bought a "J" reference just the other day ... I LOVE this thing! Own 4 Rolex and a Panerai, but I can see this one getting a lot of wrist time. Great review Guy.
enjoyed your revisit. I also have the 009, got to agree. After 2 years and a calibration to timing and a new strapcode strap, It is now a firm fav of mine. even though i hate it not having handwinding like my srp21a. And I use bot when diving as well as dive computer. Great watch, great review
I think it's been ten years since I picked up my SKX007, new. I knew exactly what I was getting into -- all the craptastic parts and all the admirable parts. I have enough watches that it takes awhile for it to get back into rotation, but every time it get hauled out of the safe and back on the wrist, it's great. I resist (a little) switching it out, and I'll even slap it on for a couple hours after work (even when I have worn something else that day) just to keep it wound up while I'm wearing something else. They're great, and worth the money, I think.
10 years and you still have it, ow that’s a testimonial. Enjoy it forever, and thanks for watching.
Great review 👍
Great video Guy...from a former 009K1 and current 013 owner. 👍⌚🇯🇵
Thanks David!
Good job Guy! Another great video
Thanks Jeff!
Great review, I own the SKXOO9 & I love it.the 7s26 is a workhorse. I also own the the Turtle PADI Pepsi with the 4r36 movement. It hacks and winds as you know, but the 009 holds a special place in my heart.
The case shape of the turtle just doesn’t work for me. At first I thought it was ok but over time I grew less attached to it. The SKX still works for me even after several years.
Just managed to get one for £255. Only 6 months old. Probably the best buy I've made. Great vid.
Great video. Love the SKX. Thanks for posting it.
I just bought my first SKX, the black 007 sister of the 009. It is from Sept 1996, so one of the very earliest produced. It's lume has patina-d and it just has a lovely, distinguished vintage look to it. As you all know, it is so smooth and comfortable and I just love having it on my wrist. I have other divers, but this one feels the best. Great review. Cheers!
Great job! I love my SKX175 (Pepsi American retailers), and will never get rid of it. I have some more expensive watches, but none that are any more appreciated than my SKX.
Thanks buddy!
Counterpoint: the SRP Turtle is not only more distinctly Seiko in looks, it also has a better movement, better QC, and better finishing.
All true, but it doesn’t resonate with me like the SKX.
I think the Turtle is considered the successor to the SKX, but the case isn't for some. The SKX is more traditional.
The turtle is too large in my opinion, and I have a 19.5 cm wrist..
JustBlueFish Watch Reviews ya that turtle case is just fugly
Yes but the SKX looks better.
Wow! Beautiful video, thank you.
Thanks!
i like my malaysian model of the 007. The red line "Diver's 200m" stands alone and there is nothing that distracts from that single line. I had it on holiday (including swimming in the sea and in the pool) one weekcontinuously on my wrist and it kept time perfectly.
Thanks for watching!
One of the first automatic watches I purchased. Fell out of love with mine and sold it but it's cool that a relatively cheap, not so great quality watch is liked and appreciated by so many people. Seiko should do a high end version of the SKX007 and 009 with a 8L35 level movement, ceramic matt bezel, Grand Seiko level bracelet, handset, finishing etc and raised indices and applied Seiko logo.. Size it at 41mm instead of 42.5 and price it around the same as a Black Bay and they couldn't keep them in stock.
I had an epiphany of sorts when you said the bezel action was "spongy". I've been trying to find the right word to describe the bezel action on my srp777 for years - "spongy" is it, lol. Awesome channel guy
Seiko SKX009 ! Darling of many a watch connoisseur ! Funny how none of it's many shorcomings affect our feelings towards it !
Elaborate and affectionate review ! Thank you for sharing !
Thanks for watching.
I have the skx009 and skx007. My first 2 divers watches. Have had them since 2015. No issues at all both are between +5-10seconds a day.
What is your wrist circumference?
Thank you for the video, got one and I was disappointed to begin with especially compared to a seiko monster for example. But the magic happens when you start wearing an skx..
Well put, thanks for sharing.
It's purposeful, is built like a tank, is a TRUE dive watch, and looks great on every strap imaginable. If you were to ever drive vintage sports cars, they (can) have as many issues, foibles, and rough edges, as what a junker would be considered today. Some are temperamental, some require a deft touch to drive, but they are indeed classics, stand the test of time, and are purposeful - just like the SKX009/007
Is the dial on the 009 blue or is it charcoal like on the 007 ? Nice review, I enjoyed it !!
twstrchasr Blue
William Sligh thanks !!
Is it big for 6.5 wrist?
Can you help me. I am looking for a subtle Seiko that can take water. I don't need a divewatch I have a Seamaster but I want a casio. I don't like the red on the SKX. So any waterresistant Casio that isn't red.
Seiko or Casio? You said both.
@@JustBlueFish Sorry my mistake no Seiko is to one brand I wanna dip into but know not a lot about
As much as i like other Seikos, the SKX just is a true Classic. That’s why it stands up against so many, even much higher priced competitors.
Great video for a great watch, enjoyed this one 👍🏻🙏🏻
Thanks Mister B.
I love the look of this watch, its history and horological value. But here in Italy the price has spiked up so much that is practically almost the same as the newest Sumo... So I picked up the Orient Mako Ray II new at half the price
The Ray II is an excellent watch. I reviewed it in the past and was impressed.
After owning many watches over the years I came down to the conclusion that it is not worth it having a watch collection. So I sold most of my watches and I only kept two, as these fulfill all my needs in terms of functionality and aesthetics. I kept my SKX009, for which I purchased a high quality jubilee bracelet and I just love wearing it. The other one I kept is a Casio G-Shock GW-B5600BC-1ER Bluetooth Tough Solar MultiBand 6. Honestly, with these two admirable and affordable time-pieces I am really happy, as I do not have to take care of them (both are tough enough) and are most comfortable to wear.
you can upgrade the 7s26 to NH36, it will be a near perfect watch.
Hi can you do a video on your watches collection it would be fun
did u add in the bracelet? thought the J model only comes with strap. thanks. hope 2 hear from u soon. solid content on your channel for the watch lover
Yes I had a Non-J version I took the bracelet from then sold the watch head.
@@JustBlueFish i see. okay nice idea
Hi Guy, you made a good point about other brands offering more for the same money and the skx has been out since 96 and in many way's been left behind but still has a cult following which is remarkable. But just think is seiko was to sympathectlly bring this model into line of today's offerings, what a watch that would be.
I picked up my first SKX about a month ago. I got a great deal on eBay. The one I got is like brand new plus it came on a super oyster from strapcode with the ratcheting clasp. I am still in love with this watch and last Saturday I picked up my first Rolex from the AD that I had to be put on a list to get and it was brand new too. I’ve been wearing the Rolex all week but today I am wearing the SKX I still love this thing too. The watch is literally a third of what I paid in just taxes on the Rolex and I still love it. I own lots of other watches too that cost thousands more than what I paid for the SKX. It does not matter what it costs or what people say it’s what you as the consumer and owner think of it at the end of the day.
Thanks for watching I appreciate it. Enjoy the Skx.
Very well said, sir.
Thanks!
My only complaint with mine cosmetically is that the dial is too dark. It looks flat black in anything but the brightest light.
It always kind of looks grey to me.
I have the SKX011 Orange. I don’t wear it often but it’s not going anywhere. Its a keeper
I have 3 Rolex’s in my collection and the seiko skx009 is still my fave, better looking, comfortable and keeps superb time!
The SKX is one of those things that shouldn't work, but just does. It's much, much better in the metal than in pictures. I don't really understand why...
My SKX009 has the world-famous chapter ring misalignment. At first I considered returning it for that, but in the end I decided that this flaw was really just a part of the character (and probably the next one would have the same again).
So now I just wear it. And it's my most-worn watch. I love the crappy bracelet (which actually looks fine on-wrist and is so, so comfy), and I never worry about it getting bashed about, because it already arrived imperfect. Summer? 009. Working on a car? 009. Going for a swim? 009. Camping? 009 (lume is very useful then).
There's just something about it... I'll never get rid of it.
i love that it is well respected by collectors. as someone who is in college and considers himself a watch enthusiast, it helps to have something so affordable and so well respected by people who are watch collectors .b
Thanks for watching!
Love my SKX009 and 007. Put a StrapCode on the 009 and a Crafter Blue rubber strap on the 007, and they get a lot of wrist time, more then my other Seiko divers. I actually want to get 2 more, so I can have one of each ref. on rubber and steel. I don't mind the nonhacking and non handwinding, as a matter of fact I don't feel the need to set it to the second when I put it on, I just set it and go about my day.
Hey why not they are affordable enough that you could have one of each if you wanted without breaking the bank.
Put them side by side, and I'm sorry but the SKX looks better than the Rolex. I am sure the Rolex beats it in every way, and yet bam, there we go. You have my vote.
I bet a lot of people agree with this. Thanks for watching buddy..
Many people put it on another type of strap but I think the stock bracelet matches the SKX's character perfectly.
Being someone with hair on my arms i heard the stock jubilee rips gair and is painful. Is this true? Maybe a.super jubilee would be best?
This watch us just like the 94 civic. It won’t die, affordable, and just works.
I did own one a few years ago .. but I cannot get over all the flaws you mentioned and my ocd went riot on some . So I sold
For the price I can overlook all the flaws, but on a more expensive watch it would drive me crazy. It’s kind of like guitars. I have a $200 acoustic that is less than perfect but I still play it. If it were a $2000 instrument I couldn’t deal with it.
Been collecting since the 90s and never understood the following for the skx.
Never owned one? Give it a try if not. Maybe your mind will change.
It has character. Inexpensive but not cheap. I avoided it for years because of the hype but sometimes the hype is real.
My theory: it was the first proper watch for many, myself included.
That's not to say it doesn't have advantages over it's peers. The size is fairly modest compared to the other divers.
Sold my SARB035 & the Alpinist.
Still keep my SKX.
I know, I know... 🙄
I miss my SARB033 sometimes.
Mas Kris me too add the 033 a SRP 775
and SRP309 monster but kept the 007 &009 just like them better🤷♂️
@@robertspinks835 you sold the Orange Monster? 🙁
Mas Kris yeah liked it but someone offered 850 Australian dollars only paid 295 so sold it doesn’t really bother me.
SKX FOREVER
Thanks for watching!
Easily one of the top 10 most iconic watches..just like u said even with the flaws given it's cost there's no reason not to have it in a collectors collection.
I hate hate the bracelet but I haven't replaced it cause it's so comfortable I forget I have the watch on.
The bracelet is a weak point, but I kind of like it. It's very comfortable to wear.
Ive probably bought and sold 6 SKX over the last few years every time i sell one i end up buying it again. So my current 2 are staples now. SKX 009 and 007 both on strapcode jubilees. The SLA017/62mas is probably the best Seiko model in their entire collection past and present ive ever laid eyes on.
Ya I would agree, the SLA017 is awesome. If it weren't LE and priced ridiculously I'd have one.
I have 3 SKXs (007,009,011). I thought about selling the 009, but after looking at it again I decided to keep it. They are cool watches.
Mine came in the rubber straps which are not good, very stiff. I have mine on Strapcode Super Oysters.
The 7s26 is the worse thing about the watch. No hand winding or hacking. It also has a huge tolerance of -25 to +40 a day. However, I have heard of them running for years.
I hate the rubber strap. Mine came on one as well, but I got the Jubilee bracelet for it.
It is more than the sum of its parts and with a nato strap it looks $1,000.
Thanks for watching!
Well said !
I enjoyed my time with my SKX 009J however the lack of hacking and hand winding drove me absolutely crazy so I sold it. It is a great looking watch, but its flaws were to much for me.
Hack and hand wind would be nice but it’s not the biggest deal for me. When I wear a watch I tend to wear it every day for a week or two. So once it’s set and running I don’t need to worry about it again.
Upgrade the movement to a NH35 and that problem is solved
It IS a good watch. I surf every day and this watch gets slammed by massive water pressures and handles it no problems.
It looks better than any other dive watch. I like what I see and it’s rubber strap for me. A bracelet is for namby pambys that don’t get the f*&ker wet.
The soft plastic movement ring, the printed dial, the lack of hacking and hand winding and even the loose tolerances movement, while not to everyone liking, they do contribute to the ruggedness of the watch. And it’s good to have choices, what would be the point for it to be exactly the same as other watches.
Thanks for watching.
I’ve got a 009 too. Its got a special place it my heart even though it’s not the best. It will never leave my collection and I’ll never mod it, I want it to stay original.
You are correct! SKX jubilee bracelet is extremely comfortable.
There will always exist two camps - those who love the skx and those who don't see the appeal. It has historical and cultural (and thus obviously horological) significance, which appears to often to be the overriding claim in its support. Other supporters claim its design or ISO rating as justification for its price. But if any other brand brought out today a non-hacking/non-hand winding diver, with a mineral crystal, hollow end links, non-applied markers and proceeded to price it at 200 dollars grey market, would we say its worth it? No. Absolutely not. So in an objective sense, we would never say its worth the price. This leads me to believe that the value of the skx is the horological/cultural significance it contains, not the actual piece. For some, that is all they need - to own a piece of significance. I think that's where people get this supposed aura from (the often brought up quote "there's just something about it") - the history of the watch is what gives most justification. And that's perfectly fine - watch collecting is a hobby and emotive in nature, not necessarily logical. For others, however, such as myself, I think it's time to move on.
I’m mostly in the camp that favors the watch for its aesthetic appeal and design. The history is cool, but wouldn’t drive me to purchase it. But once it’s on the wrist I forget about the shortcomings and just enjoy the style.
@@JustBlueFish Thanks for the reply Guy. That's a fair point. In the end, it's just about buying what you like. I just find the SKX to be one of the most routinely defended watches, yet it appears that if the same shortcomings were in any watch at this point, the degree of defense wouldn't be as such. I like the design too, so I won't fault you there.
This is my next watch. I've just bought a black waffle strap for my Sea Urchin and this needs to be added to my collection.
Better get ASAP.Prices going up as stock drying up pretty fast.Skx013 and 007 jubilee version is almost gone.
Got both versions summed it up pretty well
Only real bugbear is not being able to wind
Still appreciate it for its aesthetics
Thanks for watching.
They do have a certain charm, that is undeniable. I'd still go for the Orient equivalent though..
Thanks for watching Peter.
Mako and Ray are better watches on paper. They check more boxes. But in real life, the SKX easily surpasses them. A real robust diver.
The orient branding, logo and watches themselves look cheap to me. Seiko has that cool factor- the skx particularly. Orient looks like it comes from a vending machine.
SKX007 and 009 owner, whilst I appreciate your opinion and like the channel it’s a fucking CLASSIC dood, mine cost me about $170 from New York and I love it... SKX013 next?
Totally agree!
Thanks for watching.
The SKX007 , -009 are now discontinued. Both are getting a little more expensive as stocks run out.
I always tell people that view the skx with skepticism to get one and wear it every day for at least 2 weeks straight. They'll most likely change their opinion. I got my first one in the late 90's and I've had a few of them over the years. They're just cool watches. I agree that "better" watches can be had for less money (my orient mako 2 that I got for $145 comes to mind) but I'm not sure you'll ever find a "cooler", more comfortable or tougher watch for 200 bucks.
I can’t explain it, but it’s my favorite watch that I own. It’s just so charming.
Btw why is Grand Seiko making those ugly (IMO of course) dive watches with cathedral hands when Seiko have such a strong design identity with their dive watches? I don’t get it.
I'm guessing GS wants to distance and differentiate itself from Seiko core. They really want to be out of the budget watch business.
@@JustBlueFish I agree, but as beautifully finished as their sport watches are, they lack identity because of it. I wish they'd apply those high standards to their iconic designs. With that said, part of the charm of the SKX is that it's so easy to wear because it's affordable.
The title accurately describes the tension surrounding Seiko SKX between its objective evaluation and subjective appreciation.
Brother , the SKX is an icon … you just don't judge icons . That simple .
Thanks for watching
Still looks damn cool on the wrist... Good design is just that... Good design - largely due to the case shape and the jubilee!
It’s like a vintage car. Of course, a vintage car does not match modern performances or comforts. Just being vintage has its own attributes. I have the skx009j1 with the rubber-type strap, and I wouldn’t change (mod) anything about the watch. It runs about 4 or 5 seconds slow a day. I just set it about a minute fast and it lasts about a couple of weeks before I have to set it a minute fast again. Bottom line, it’s a great looking, very affordable piece of iconic watch history.
Thanks for watching
Please do SOTC video
It’s on my todo list!
i had skx007 and now i have a citizen AY5000 that i prefer!!!
It has a certain charm to it and it’s flaws add to that charm.
At the price I’m not bothered by the flaws, and I agree it’s part of the whole package.
I have an skx, and a new seiko5. The lume and power reserve on the skx is far better
The title of the film is a perfectly state of my mind about Skx :)
I agree with this video 100%...Unfortunately, Seiko has quit making the SKX007 and SKX009 as I write this on September 1st, 2019... Good luck, everyone!
I just bought mine from the Philippines earlier this month. I love it. I have Tag, Tissot, Movado, Bulova. This one is now my favorite. It just looks right. Very simple.
The Seiko SKX is like your flakey, embarrassing, and frankly unsophisticated friend whose been there for you after all those other, technically “better” friendships came and went. I’ve owned a Samurai, Turtle, Padi Solar Tuna and Sumo, yet I still wear my SKX009K the most. Heck, I’m wearing it right now.
Great analogy I like that.
I love the watch. Doesn’t mean it’s the best.
It’s an old watch design that people keep being drawn to and buying. Seiko has moved on. So many new and better watches. Yet we keep coming back to the SKX. Not letting go. We are the reason the SKX is still relevant.
Thanks for watching Dale.
the fucking transition is killing what is left of my soul. great insights but fuck was it hard to watch.
all skxes should upgrade to the NH36 movement.
Nothing is perfect in this world, but SKX deserve more love than others because it "get on" so well with people, it may sounds weird but it's a watch that gets more score than other and easy become a first list when you need a dive watches with all the function in good looking form and.. Of course: the reasonable price.
(200m water resistant, day and date display and Pepsi bezel is win most of people loves). 😊
I wear my Skx009 on a far better jubilee bracelet and also with a sapphire crystal.
I was terribly offended on a past occasion when a friend and “not a watch guy,” asked if my 007J was a Rolex haha. I proceeded on a 5 minute polite rant explaining why I own this Seiko and not a Rolex. I wear a variety of watches and love my 007 for many reasons. And while this video is not about Rolex, i will add, I’ll never wear one... and no, it has nothing to do with cost or quality.
the skx is a watch you buy with the heart
Thanks for watching.
Mine broke after 2 years, just sold it on eBay broken for £90, I only paid £120 for it new. Must admit though I miss it . But my 051 is superior in every way, so I won't be going back.
Martin Harrison how did it break? I’ve been wanting to switch mine to my every day watch for work and everything but I’m afraid it won’t stand up to my line of work
@@Mr1Alex91 , it just started running incredibly fast, and then stopped working. If your looking for a tough accurate watch , the the 200m kinetic diver is a great everyday watch. Otherwise known as the BFK. I've got one and it's a great watch, really solid and has never let me down.
Oh, and that ISO cert is overrated. There are plenty of watches that do what the SKX can do both more and less expensive and don’t have ISO. I worked at an ISO institution once. It’s just a money making scam.
Thanks for watching.
