Chemist here ... all the elements in a material, in this case maxamet steel, will add up to 100%. So when you see "balance," it's referring to the difference between 100% and the sum of all of the other alloying elements.
The additions of the alloying elements are never exact -- it's usually nominal values you'll see -- and there's always trace amounts of impurities, so instead of saying the iron content is 70% or whatever, it's just referred to as the balance.
In a steel (or any other iron alloy), iron is the balance element. In a titanium alloy, titanium is the balance element. In a nickel alloy, nickel is the balance element. Et cetera.

    • @racquetman75
      @racquetman75 5 років тому +5

In addition to what I wrote above, it's the alloying elements that give metal alloys their unique characteristics, so it's important to know what percentage of each of those elements is going into the alloy and the percentage of the base metal is of little interest comparatively, hence it just being referred to as balance.

I have both the native 5 and the manix 2 in maxamet, they are both amazing. I basically switch between both depending on the size of knife I feel like carrying. And now that I've had them about a year and sharpened them a couple times. It's far easier than what I once thought. I highly recommend the steel and the knives. 3v, maxamet, m390 and cpm 154 are probably my favorites. And as for budget steels either aus 8, 154 cm, 5160 or 01.

Love the manix 2 platform. Have an all black with g10 and s30v, and a satin cruwear with carbon fiber. Also own a manix 2 xl. I went and ordered the manix 2 lightweight version and had to return it. The lock tabs were unbelievably stiff, to the point where it was painful to close the knife. Don't know if I just got a bad one or if all the lightweights are like that. My other manixes are all drop shut smooth with easy to operate lock tabs. I prefer the manix 2 over the pm 2 all day. And I rate the Shaman even higher than the manix. Shaman is my favorite spyderco I own and one of my all time favorite knives.

Hello Chris my name is Tom I've been watching your videos for a very long time. several years ago when your channel was knew I was in having surgery and I've always loved the outdoors and I found your channel. You and syntax 77 and a bunch of others I feel like you saved my life. I had part of my colon removed and I'm going to be 57 years old but I try and get out in the woods as often as possible generally for day hikes and bicycling and the rest of the adventurer strictly in my mind. I purchased about four knives that you recommended up until this day but I'm not interested in Titus anymore I'm interested in gear I bought almost everything that you highly recommended and have one hell of a storage locker of survival gear camping gear car camping gear you know what I mean. I know you want to go from preparedmind101 just by the name to Chris Tanner knives and knives and knives that are cool and olio lights but I hope you change your mind because your channel has changed my life a little bit and I want to thank you for that that's all I want to say by the way I bought the Wolfpack knife hatchet and I think that knife is absolutely awesome even though you gave it a bad grade just a matter of opinion keep on making channels brother keep on making channels

Yeah I dont know why people get so weird about prices of things especially when its something that is going to be used for a long time and want quality. If it's not quality and its overpriced then I can see the problem but if it's made super high quality then just buy it or wait till it's on sale or find coupon codes or something and be patient

G'day Chris, For the longest time I stayed away from Spyderco. Just didn't like the look of them. All that changed when I got to hold a Manix 2. Outstanding knife! I've now got two in S30V steel; one a lock back, one a ball joint folder plus another lightweight Manix 2. I much prefer carrying small LTWK fixed blades, however, there is nearly always a Manix 2 on me somewhere. Love that knife. Sadly, the Maxamet's price tag, which is over AUD$260, is way out of my budget. Thanks for letting me know about this steel. Cheers, BH

    From knife steel compositions app
Maker: Carpenter - United States (US)
    Technology: MM
    Notes:
Carpenter Technologies high sped tool steel. Uses their trademark Micro-Melt® technology. From production knives manufacturers, Kershaw did try to make a folder out of it, ZT888, but it proved too difficult to grind at 60+ HRC, and it had warping issues if heat treated after grinding. Still, there's hope for Maxamet - custom makers. High on Cobalt and Vanadium. 10% Tungsten(W) may seem a lot, but in reality it isn't because Tungsten is so heavy, in other words, too much fewer atoms to form carbides. High wear resistance, high working hardness and lots of carbides. Will perform better with coarse edge if you get your hands on a knife made out of it.

This knife amazing. The steel is crazy, just need to watch out in humid environments.
The action is awesome as well.
If they make one without rivets, I would grab one as well. Yes, you can slide the blade out but I prefer a full disassemble knife.
One caveat. Make sure you have diamond plates for sharpening and it’s a piece of cake to sharpen. You may need to sharpen if you get a microchip in it.

The whole thing about maxamet not having much lateral toughness or toughness in general is stupid think if you have a knife that’s softer and bends in half when lateral force is applied to it its still ruined you can’t just bend it back same as a snap this applies to rolls vs chips to with both your edge is fucked with a roll it is actually worse you now have a completely blunted edge vs a chip a small chunk out of it that will onley snag a little and I guarantee that it will take more force for the harder steel to get to the point where it chips or snaps in half anyway that’s my little rant lol
