I live like 200km away from Nairobi and I make monthly trips to the city for business. I always leave my car at a friend's house and navigate around using Uber. It's more affordable and a lot less stressful. Don't be quick to buy a car. Nairobi traffic can be challenging.
I like that you're embracing our way of life, just to add there's a shop at the village market mall called Nobri they sell American products but they don't come cheap because of shipping costs....just incase you're interested
Convenient & safe‼️ Rent, multiple uber rides, food, phone bill , insurance, eating out daily &buy gifts & clothes for under $3,500. This is the life I want‼️ Never going to live like that here in the USA @ that price.
Listen….I’m dreading coming back to the USA for the holidays from a financial perspective. Just looking at just the Airbnb prices starting at $2500+ per month with none of the perks we have here. If it wasn’t for my kids and grandkids I wouldn’t be making the trip. One gotta make a whole lotta money to live like this in the US. - Saidah @TravelCheckIns
Totally understand your predicament about moving houses. For now it makes sense to stay put if the inconveniences are worth it. Hopefully, your visa situation works in your favour and you can figure out how to move from there.
Currently ,living 6 months in Kenya and 6 months in USA . That rent is little high but not crazy , I don’t mind paying high rent if it comes with lots of convenience.
Yes it is convenient. Not the fanciest but it meets all of our needs right now. Being furnished, it’s also not as expensive as some other places that we like such as Skynest.
$2200 a month for rent in Kenya, you must have a lot of money. Personally, I would live like a local Kenyan. I’ve seen nice apartments in Kenya 🇰🇪 for $200 USD a month and that’s a two bedroom.
True. The real estate in Nairobi is very competitive. I have a 3-bedroom 2-bathroom apartment I bought and rented it out for 250 USD since I live and work upcountry. $2200 should be more than enough for a 4br maisonette with parking for 3 and an expansive yard. But with time and enough research, they will definitely discover more better options.
I’m going to be honest. I haven’t met any (or seen any on UA-cam) Americans that are paying $200 a month. You have to take in consideration the accommodations we are used to. I know Kenyans that pay more than $200, so local is relative to who you are around.
I think you should try to buy groceries from local not supermarkets and eat from local restaurants, not brand restaurants. That way, you will see the difference
We have done all the above. I do see the difference in price especially with groceries. Usually convenience is our biggest factor but thanks for the feedback.
If y'all stuck in the housimg situation because of your visa situation then I can understand. Otherwise, I think while you all are enjoying that place it might do you well to venture out and look at some other places. $2,000 should get you a huge six burner stove with a huge oven and a chef. Btw, get yourself a pressure cooker. I think they have the nice Bosch brand . As long as y'all are happy you are doing good😊
Once we have completed the long term Visa process we will have some more flexibility with housing. We are looking forward to that yet enjoying our current situation. We are happy and appreciate you watching. Have a blessed day.
From the US. Y’all are gonna kick youreselves when you realize that you really are being had BIG TIME paying that much for rent. As they say in the South, bless your 💜🤦🏽♀️
cut down on your expenses, there are a lot of ways you could do that. You still spending way too much for a month. $3000 a month in ten months can buy an apartment in Nairobi
@@Jp_johazi buying an apartment in a country where we have no citizenship is not a good investment for us. What’s way too much for you, is not way too much for us. We appreciate your feedback though.
I agree, Germaine don't buy milk or juices that will stay in the fridge one or two weeks because that's not a natural food only buy 3 or five day's limited time
Yall tracking it down to the penny - good job! Now I know you all are sick and tired of all the opinions on the house costs...lol (you know being a fellow utuber I get it). I'll say just keep an open mind because it could be the way to reduce your expenses - I was checking out airbnb by the month...not sure if that's an option.
We stayed here first, then went to an Airbnb. There was no comparison. The Airbnb had a used/lived in feel and that is not something we want to compromise on. The apartment we live in opened earlier this year, is brand new, great location and many amenities including gym, sauna, personal trainer, steam room and MORE! We looked at other apartments and Airbnb’s and the price we pay justifies the comforts we get here. We will look for something with a similar aesthetic at a lower price point, but if we don’t find it, that would be okay with us too. Thanks for taking time to watch and share feedback.
@@TravelCheckIns I get it - because the amount of money I spend traveling, another person would never...but its what's important to me - and where you stay and the quality of life you want is super important.
If that rent isnt an Airbnb rate with fast wifi, washer and dryer with a gym included in a decent area then you most definitely getting robbed and taken advantage of.
It is, however between work, the mission field and daily life, the apartment is a good fit for us. We will start apartment hunting again after the holidays.
Holy Cow! You’re spending Ksh. 283,000 for rent in Kenya? That’s a palatial mansion I must say. What kind of amenities do you get for that amount? Are you living in Karen ? Being Kenyan & having lived in America, I know that’s too much for kenya. If you plan to live in Kenya permanently it’s better to buy a home or a luxury apartment
@@Jp_johazi We’re not interested in a furnished mansion. We wanted a furnished apartment in a luxurious Westlands high-rise with 5-star amenities and that’s what we have. We are in the heart of the city and close proximity to everything that is important to us. Robbed? Not at all. God won’t allow that. Be blessed friend.
There are a lot of factors that come in when it comes to choosing a house. It could be cheaper but will the neighbourhood provide the same comfort and amenities they are used to? I don’t think so

Kenyans need to stop this nonsense of telling people where they need to be staying, it's not their first time there they know how things work they are just sharing their experiences with their fellow country men that are interested in making the move to the continent.
We hope we never need it, but we’d hate to not have it of we do. Medivac isn’t cheap. Nor is shipping a body back to the US. God forbid. We like to stay ready so we don’t have to get ready. Thanks for the feedback and for watching.
@@TravelCheckIns trust me, you don’t. Don’t fear. I’ve used healthcare services across East Africa with no insurance. The quality and price are way cheaper than what your premium is. I’d be happy to explain it to you in details when I’m in Nairobi next.

Food here in kenya doesn’t have alot of additives, therefore got short shelf life.
Absolutely! Thanks.
After the Great Depression , USA started adding additives to the food to ensure long shelf life so another food tragedy won’t happen again
