  • "Fearful that her ailing father will be drafted into the Chinese military, Mulan (Ming-Na Wen) takes his spot -- though, as a girl living under a patriarchal regime, she is technically unqualified to serve. She cleverly impersonates a man and goes off to train with fellow recruits. Accompanied by her dragon, Mushu (Eddie Murphy), she uses her smarts to help ward off a Hun invasion, falling in love with a dashing captain along the way."

She didn't want to become a warrior, she just did it to save her father's life, that's why it's so good, it's a great set up

There's many things you really don't get. First, you really thought she went to the army for just being a warrior. She does that to SAVE her Dad! She knew he was gonna die if he goes. I mean nobody goes to the army by choice.
Yeah, there's sexist lines, but that makes the story believable, during that time, women were treated like this. It was still the case not that many years ago... (Like the 50's).
Also, don't compare Mulan to The Lord of the Rings, it is not comparable and for the same audience. And she is not a freaking princess!!!

The character of Mulan is shown from the beginning to be intuitive and creative when faced with problems (Eg chicken feed) but she really doesn't fit in to the traditional role expected of her by society which makes her feel that she is dishonouring her family. She joins the army to save her father while also retaining the family's honour by answering the call to arms.
In terms of her being better than the rest of her company, these are intentionally raw recruits. The veterans and elite soldiers left with the General early on in the film and were subsequently slaughtered. The recruits then have a training montage which is assumed to take place over several weeks if not months where we see Mulan and the whole company progress. In the montage, Mulan solves the arrow problem through a mixture of ingenuity and determination rather than brute strength. Every subsequent victory she wins also utilises quick thinking and problem solving ahead of physical attributes (cause avalanche, sneak into palace, fighting with the fan, use the fireworks to defeat Shan Yu). She does show some cool fight moves but, rather than physically overpowering her opponents, she relies heavily on evasion and landing careful blows. I think a lot of those fight scenes were inspired by Hong Kong action (particularly Jackie Chan who always made excellent use of props in his choreography).
She's a really well constructed character with clear motivations, agency in the story and progression. Lion King is my favourite Disney but I do love this film.

Mulan didn’t have the desire to be a warrior or not be a princess though. She’s just a regular village girl in the Northern Wei Dynasty (here it appears to be Han) living life how girls are expected to live.
Then she, as all good Asian children do with filial piety - a heavy thing in our cultures - takes her father’s place to save him.
That’s the set up. It’s meant to be abrupt and sudden with no build up. A regular ancient Chinese village girl, at the spur of a moment, makes a huge decision to save her father’s life.

Okay but the main thing that ruined the love action mulan for me was that it didn’t have the same message. What I love about this one is that it tells you girls can do just as much as men. However in the new one the only reason mulan is able to fight and stuff is because she is Magic?? Like what?

I think it's a good think they didn't make Mulan wanting to become a solder, because the whole point of the movie, is for her to take her father's place. The fact that she didn't want to go, and potentially making a decision that could end hers life, makes it much more impactful. Who really wants to be a solder in a midst of war anyway? I'd say that would be more unnatural, especially if her father was left disabled BECAUSE he was a solder hurt in a war. I'd say that would make Mulan more scared of doing that herself if anything. I think that was a good choice by the writer. She is supposed to be just a regular girl, leading a regular life. War brakes out suddenly, and she needs to act upon it, if she doesn't want to lose her father. Because that problem needs to feel like it's out of sudden, it makes it more meaningful and impactful because there's no buildup.

Mulan is a poetry/folk song from Norther dynasty which written by an unknown author. The basic settings are roughly the same beside the fantasy elements, and everyone didn’t know that Mulan was a girl until after returning home for twelve years.

Mulan has always been a top favorite. The live action was a disappointment. As for Halloween movies you should check out Coraline, Host, Scream, Skeleton Key, Haunting in Connecticut, and Hills Has Eyes (remake).

Some live-action movie adaptations are really good. Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella are great examples of how you can improve the plot, add more character development, remove plotholes and add more depth to the story as a whole. The Mulan live-action remake is a whole different story. Different antagonist, no Mushu, no love-interest and there are no songs. Disney made that story closer to the original legend, but didn't take into account what people loved about the animated movie, it lacks depth and comedy and the pacing is really off too. It would be just for the best if you'd watch other live-action movies that are so much better than Mulan.

@@DanielWatches it definitely does have the eerie factor to it. I would recommend watching it. There's these Facebook (I think) posts that have some clues for after the movie for insight. It's kinda like a mystery game they have dedicated to the movie. The movie itself is fine if not pretty good. It also depends on how you look at it tbh. At least that's my opinion.

@@DanielWatches apparently depending on which language version you watch, the script changes. I would recommend watching it in the original first (English) if you're interested.

Oh yeah Disney live action movies have gotten much worse since 1998. I think the most recent ones that I have been pretty damn amazing in my opinion are Maleficent and Cinderella.
Any older live action movies are pure gold, but the 90s were Poppin yo!
I watched a video essay for beauty and the beast live action, and it went into some detail about the new live action movies and how the guy behind them is basically rewriting the stories in a very non-Disney kind of way, like explaining everything or making it worse mysterious and fun, or even sucking the fun straight out of every scene

You should watch bugs life from Pixar. Classic and hilarious! Or the new movie the Mitchell's versus the Machines. That movie was great. Like surprisingly good. As a grown man I actually enjoyed the film more than the kids I was watching with 😂 Also for the scary movie you should watch the thing. It's more so a psychological thriller but it's a classic staple film.

I remember it being one of my all-time favorite childhood films, and rewatching it as a teenager really changed things up for me. Some of the "undertones" that were meant to be obvious, I didn't understand as a kid - and now that I completely get the storyline and the little jokes scattered throughout the movie, it's become my favorite pixar film with my favorite villain. It's so much deeper than I made it out to be when I was in kindergarten, and having one of the only villains out there who didn't undermine his enemies really inspired me after all these years🦗🐜

i actually loved aladdin live action, i liked some of live action beauty and the beast. i will say, if you approach the live action mulan as a different movie altogether, it's enjoyable as an action adventure movie mushu isnt in it though... cinderella live action was a delight. :)
also mulan went to the newbie training camp. so they all were not soldiers... shang was the only soldier
also I agree the lion king live action was bad.

Your thinking too much my man… this is a kids animation. My goodness.
And by the way… the live action version sucks! All the live versions suck…. Disney was a juggernaut at creating stories. Now they have nothing and are relying on “the nostalgia phase” everyone has been getting into. Disney suck ass now. And you can see with that with the “remake trend”I personally call them “ripoffs of themselves”

imo, the only live-action remake so far to add something worthwhile to the original piece is "Beauty and the Beast".
All the others (with the possible exception of Will's rap bits as the genie) were just unnecessary.

Im personally not into live action, because it's mostly the same as the original with less heart and magic and more "woke", unless you're into that. I would instead recommend the original Beauty and the Beast 1991, and Aladdin 1992 :)
